Destined Entwining: Capturing My Devoted Beau

Chapter 280: Chapter 155: Too Much Money on Their Hands (First Update)

Ever since the old Daoist predicted Kenneth Osborne’s future through his birth chart, he hasn’t been particularly fond of him.

But Kenneth really knows how to sweet-talk.

Calling him ”Old Immortal” made his heart swell with joy, especially when he saw Kenneth’s admiration for his cooking skills, even asking him to teach him how to cook!

It’s noteworthy that while Nick Zeller, the rebellious student, has eaten so much of his cooking, he has never asked to learn how to cook from him!

And as for Lawrence Winters, it’s even more out of the question; this grand-disciple can only eat, and lacks any cooking talent.

The old Daoist glanced at Kenneth Osborne and said, ”It’s not impossible for me to teach you how to cook, but my cooking skills require talent. If you lack talent, diligence won’t help.”

Kenneth quickly replied, ”Even learning a bit would be better than going to a professional culinary school. If Old Immortal doesn’t mind, teach me some basics at first, let me try? If it doesn’t work out, I’ll give up this idea.”

”Hmm, you seem sincere enough,” the old Daoist nodded seriously, ”I’ll be here for a week. During this week, I’ll teach you how to make an egg fried rice. If you can make this egg fried rice to my satisfaction, I’ll take you as my student!”

Kenneth: ”...”

After a moment of silence, he said, ”...Just teach me how to cook, I can pay tuition. As for becoming a disciple...it’s not necessary...”

”Hah! You don’t know how many people cried and begged me to take them as students, and I’ve never agreed! Today I’m offering...” the old Daoist glared at Kenneth, about to scold him for not knowing what’s good for him, then suddenly understood, chuckling slyly: ”Hahaha! You’re worried that if you become my disciple, you won’t be able to pursue my little grand-disciple, aren’t you?! Then you would be her uncle in the sect hierarchy! —And I’ll tell you that our Celestial Master Sect doesn’t allow romances between master and disciple!”

Kenneth: ”...”

He actually didn’t know how to refute this old Daoist’s words.

”Hehe, speechless now, huh? Actually, don’t waste your time, you won’t win over my little grand-disciple,” the old Daoist smiled cunningly, ”Even if you can cook very well, it’s no use. She will eat but won’t appreciate it.”

Kenneth had a flash of inspiration, squinting his eyes, he smiled and said: ”Is that so? Old Immortal, how about we have a bet?”

”A bet?! Sure, I like that!” The old Daoist scooped up the just-stir-fried matsutake mushrooms and vegetables, asking while he worked, ”What are the terms? How do we bet?”

Kenneth said, ”Just bet on me and Nora. You teach me how to cook, and see if I can win Nora over, how about that?”

The old Daoist blinked, feeling Kenneth’s words were a bit convoluted, but the logic seemed alright.

He wiped his hands with a napkin and pondered, ”You mean you want to learn to cook, and then use your culinary skills to win over my little grand-disciple?”

”Yes.” Kenneth nodded, ”If I succeed, you lose. If I fail, I lose.”

”Deal!” The old Daoist slapped the marble countertop, laughing, ”What’s the stake?”

”If I lose, I’ll become your disciple and join the Celestial Path Sect.”

”If you lose, you act as the witness for my and Nora’s wedding, how about that?”

The old Daoist: ”...Uh, that’s it?”

”...Then let’s raise the stakes to a hundred thousand! If I lose, I’ll not only become your disciple but also pay a hundred thousand as a disciple fee!”

The old Daoist decided: ”...One million! If you lose, you pay me one million as a disciple fee! I’ll take that bet!”

Kenneth initially intended for the stake to be one million, but if he proposed one million himself, the old Daoist would certainly think it too easy and increase the stakes further.

So only by letting the counterpart propose one million and then making a reluctant face does the stake seem ”precious.”

Indeed, he showed a troubled expression, gritted his teeth, and firmly stated: ”One million it is!”

His voice was a bit loud, and Lawrence happened to overhear. She rushed in and asked: ”What’s this million about? What are you talking about?!”

The old Daoist chuckled and said: ”I made a bet with your brother Kenneth, the wager is one million.”

”Ah?! A million bet?! Are you two crazy with money?” Lawrence’s small face crumpled in distress, ”If you’re crazy with money, let me safeguard it, I’m not!”

Kenneth, hands in his pockets, leaned against the kitchen’s marble counter with a smile: ”It’s a bit much, but it’s worth it...”

The corners of Lawrence’s mouth twitched, waving her hand: ”Whatever, just don’t bring it up in front of me.”

Yet, even though she said not to mention it, it remained on her mind.

They all enjoyed dinner thoroughly, and she was so stuffed she was nearly immobilized.

Kenneth said he’d take her out to walk off the food, and she readily agreed.

Watching Kenneth lead Lawrence out the door, the old Daoist smiled gleefully.

Nick Zeller, however, was a bit worried. Only when Gabrielle Winters went to the kitchen to clear away dishes did he quietly ask the old Daoist: ”Master, are you just going to watch...”

”It’s fine, it’s fine...Just consider it an experiment...I told you already, this is unprecedented for humanity, no experience to reference, no precedent to follow, so we just go with the flow.” He squinted his eyes with a smile, muttering: ”...If I can make a tidy profit along with taking in a good disciple, that’s a surefire deal!”

”What good disciple?” Nick Zeller didn’t catch the latter part of the old Daoist’s words, as he spoke too indistinctly.

The old Daoist had no intention to explain, got up and said: ”I’m stuffed too, going to practice the Five Animal Play to work it off, care to join?”

”No, no, I’ll go help Sis wash dishes.” Nick said as he ran to the kitchen, leaving the old Daoist to practice the Five Animal Play alone in his room.

Meanwhile, Lawrence Winters and Kenneth Osborne were strolling around in the garden of the apartment complex downstairs.

She was persistently asking Kenneth to tell her what the bet was about.

Kenneth purposely kept silent, only teasing her appetite until finally saying, somewhat downcast: ”...I bet with your great-grandmaster that I’d pursue you. If I succeed, he’ll witness our marriage. If I fail, I lose him a million.”

”Just for that you bet a million?!” Lawrence was both astonished and angry, ”Are you crazy with money?!”
