Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 273: Chapter 273: Please Give Your Daughter to Me

An Shuchao got up from the kang stove in the morning, his legs and feet not very nimble. With Bai Xue gone and no one to take care of him, he knew that An Hao was about to take her college entrance exams and didn’t want to trouble her, so he used his crutches to go to the kitchen and prepare something to eat.

He had just finished eating and hadn’t yet cleared away the pots and pans when he heard someone calling for him in the courtyard.

He walked to the door, lifted the curtain, and saw Widow Zhang standing in the courtyard, ”Father of An Hao, you’d better get ready, Qin Jian has come to your house to propose marriage. They’re almost at your doorstep!”

”What? Propose marriage?” An Shuchao was taken aback.

”Oh my, you don’t know? Your daughter An Hao and the Qin Family’s young man Qing Jian?” Widow Zhang looked at An Shuchao’s clueless face and pursed her lips, ”What kind of father are you! Such a big matter and you don’t know the slightest bit about it.”

An Shuchao had heard others mention that his girl and Qin Jian had gotten close, but when he heard about it, his attitude was indifferent. Regarding this matter, his attitude was that if it worked out, that would be fantastic, since the man was an engineer with such a high salary, marrying him would be marrying above her class.

If it didn’t work out, that was fine too. After all, An Hao was still young and hadn’t even taken her college entrance exams yet.

If she didn’t get accepted, she could simply come back and at the time, he could just ask someone to find a match for her.

As An Shuchao was lost in thought, a commotion arose outside the house. Just as he was about to hobble out with his crutches, Qin Jian had already entered the courtyard.

Qin Jian took a step forward and introduced himself, ”Uncle An, my name is Qin Jian, thirty years old this year. Currently, I work at the provincial research institute, we have met before. I have taken a liking to your daughter, An Hao, and have specially come today to ask for her hand in marriage.”

Listening to these formulaic words, devoid of any emotion, Tian Niu hiding among the crowd felt like going crazy.

Although he had never proposed before, he had witnessed his mother doing so on his behalf, and at the very least, shouldn’t there be some small talk first? Shouldn’t he have praised their daughter at least?

Don’t just get straight to the point, right?

Oh, this is what happens when someone is a leader for too long, their proposal speech is so concise.

”Alright, alright. Let’s go inside and discuss this,” An Shuchao said, slightly excited, facing this stern-faced, serious son-in-law, he truly felt at a loss.

Qin Jian followed him inside the house, and upon entering, he saw a table with leftover food and pots and pans that had not been washed yet.

An Shuchao explained somewhat embarrassedly, ”Sorry about this, I have some trouble with my legs and feet, I just ate and haven’t cleaned the dishes yet.”

After that, he quickly gestured to his family to hastily tidy up before sitting down to have a quiet talk with Qin Jian.

An Shuchao lit a dry tobacco pipe and took a deep drag to ease his emotions before speaking, ”Qin Jian, I must admit that I haven’t been the most responsible father, and I’m not very familiar with the matter between you and An Hao.”

”I met An Hao last winter, and after getting to know her, I feel she is the ideal choice for a wife. I like her and will take good care of her, and I will take on the responsibility of caring for both our families! Please rest assured and entrust your daughter to me! I guarantee it with my integrity!” Qin Jian said with utmost seriousness and sincerity.

But the more serious and solemn he was, the more An Shuchao worried.

Having such a stern son-in-law at home, he didn’t know if he’d be considerate of his daughter in the future, not to mention the considerable age difference.

However, Qin Jian was a good match in terms of status, and he had left a strong impression on An Shuchao the last time he helped An Hao move.

Watching An Shuchao continually smoking without saying anything further, Qin Jian’s brow furrowed slightly, for the first time feeling uncertain.

Just as he was worrying, he heard An Shuchao say, ”How about this, let’s send someone to call An Hao over. If she agrees, then it’s settled!”

Qin Jian breathed a quiet sigh of relief, ”Okay.”

He stood up, pushed aside the curtain, and just as he did, he saw Tian Niu among the gathered crowd, so he called out to him, ”Make a trip to where An Hao is staying, call her over, and tell her I’ve come to propose.”

”Roger that, I’m on it!”
