Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 258: Chapter 256: A Tricky Matter

”Whether he likes me or not doesn’t matter,” Bai Xue confidently said. ”I have a way to make Qin Jian dislike you but still have no choice but to marry you.”

Bai Yanjiao looked at her mother in surprise: ”Mom, you have such a skill? He can still marry me even if he doesn’t fancy me? Do you think this is the old society? Am I a landowner’s precious daughter, and he’s just a laborer carrying heavy loads? He’ll have no choice but to marry me, tell me, where does your confidence come from?”

Bai Xue, upon hearing her daughter’s reply, suddenly realized she might have spoken too confidently: ”Okay, perhaps I did brag too much. But the intentions behind my thoughts are good, and I have come up with a plan that I think could really work.”

”What kind of plan?” Bai Yanjiao asked eagerly.

”Do you know why Qin Jian has been delaying getting married?”

”Why?”

”Qin Jian is cursed with a wife-killing fate!” Bai Xue whispered.

”What? A wife-killing fate?” Bai Yanjiao was terrified: ”Mom, you know he has a wife-killing fate and you still want me to marry him?”

”That’s what you don’t understand,” Bai Xue said with a mysterious smile. ”It’s probably just a rumor. Back then, they even said your father had a wife-killing fate, didn’t they? And what happened? That old rascal of your father left us sooner than anyone!”

Thinking about the matter of the wife-killing fate, Bai Yanjiao suddenly recalled: ”Right, Mom, why did you marry dad despite the rumors that he had a wife-killing fate?”

”Of course. Your deadbeat dad was quite well-off back then, and handsome too; girls’ families were practically wearing out his threshold with their proposals. You see, my family wasn’t well-off at the time, but I was pretty. Your dad was so smitten with me, and since your grandma didn’t approve, he came up with this tale in a fit of pique.”

Thus, Bai Xue believed the same was true for Qin Jian.

As for him having a wife-killing fate, was it really true?

Besides, they would have to consult a fortune teller to check his birth chart to know for sure if he truly had a wife-killing fate.

The idea that Bai Xue planted started to take root in Bai Yanjiao’s heart, imagining if she married Qin Jian, she could have an income of over two hundred a month and live in the provincial city. If she were to encounter An Hao later, she would be able to hold her head high.

”Okay,” Bai Yanjiao nodded. ”Mom, let’s go with that. Please help me work it out. Whether it works or not, it’s still an opportunity.”

Seeing her daughter agree, Bai Xue nodded with satisfaction, having already thought through her plan.

The day after returning from the reporting meeting, Bai Xue went out. She went to the next village to find Liu Shenpo, who had treated Zhang Juyun before.

Liu Shenpo hadn’t had customers for a while. With fewer issues to handle, she had less money to spend and was pondering how to make some money when she heard someone calling at her door: ”Is Liu Shenpo here?”

Hearing someone calling her, Liu Shenpo’s spirits instantly lifted.

She hurriedly hopped down from the Kang, shuffled her small feet out the door, and saw a reasonably decent-looking middle-aged woman seeking her out.

”You’re looking for me...” Liu Shenpo eyed Bai Xue with a sidelong glance, noting she was well-dressed and had softer skin than the average rural woman. She seemed like someone with money.

”Liu Shenpo, I’m from the neighboring village. I’ve long heard of your great reputation and made a special trip to see you.” Bai Xue smiled as she uncovered her basket, revealing half a basket of eggs, ”This is a little token of my appreciation.”

The fortune-teller’s eyes swept over the offering, and her eyes gleamed with excitement: ”Very well. Are you here to have your fortune told? Or to catch ghosts? Or is it for a medical consultation?”

”None of the above.” Bai Xue shook her head and said with a smile, ”I’ve come to invite a ghost.”
