Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 256: Chapter 254 Reporting

”Old Qin!” Li Junping glared at Qin Ru Hai with a cold face, ”If you don’t understand, don’t talk nonsense.”

Qin Ru Hai glanced at An Hao and saw that the girl was biting her lower lip and seemed quite unhappy, so he said, ”An Hao, you don’t need to take your aunt’s words to heart. As long as you and Jianzi are happy, that’s enough.”

With that, he tugged at Li Junping’s sleeve and headed straight for home.

When they reached the doorway, he stopped, turned around, and said to Li Junping, ”What’s the matter with you? Can’t you see that our son is in love? He’s already thirty years old; can’t he have a sense of what’s important in this matter? He finally meets someone he likes, and you just can’t stop causing trouble for our son?”

”I just want our son to have a better future!” Li Junping retorted with her mouth twisted, ”I don’t think highly of An Hao’s family background either. If she marries Qin Jian, do you think our son will have a peaceful life afterward?”

”Would marrying a commander’s daughter bring peace?” Qin Ru Hai glared at Li Junping, ”Do you think being a commander’s daughter-in-law is an easy role? Have you forgotten how your parents tried to stop you from marrying me? If opposition had been effective, would you have had to threaten to end your own life back then?”

Qin Ru Hai was usually silent, but when he spoke, he made an impact.

He didn’t usually interfere with household matters, but he made the major decisions for the family.

Seeing that the head of the household was displeased, Li Junping, realizing the conversation had gone this far, couldn’t say much more, ”Alright, alright! I won’t interfere, okay? Since our son likes her, let him be with An Hao. After the girl finishes her college entrance exam, I will bring gifts and propose on our behalf!”

”That’s more like it!” Qin Ru Hai was satisfied now.

A week later, Qin Jian received instructions from his superiors to make a circuit reporting tour at similar work units across the province with Jian Ying.

Qin Jian was not a good speaker, so he spoke to the leaders and suggested Jian Ying go in his place.

Since both Qin Jian and Jian Ying couldn’t be away, given that someone needed to be responsible for their current work, the organization approved his request considering the practical circumstances.

Jian Ying went to give the circuit reports, and Qin Jian, leading his team, continued working. With summer approaching, they strived to complete their tasks before the oppressive heat of the fiery sun arrived.

That day, Qin Jian had just returned from the field with his staff when he saw the village Party secretary and several village cadres waiting for him at their base.

The moment they saw him, the Party secretary approached, ”Mr. Qin, today I came to ask you to make a report to all the villagers. It will also let everyone learn from your heroic spirit.”

”This...” Qin Jian hesitated, ”You know I’m not eloquent. Besides, Jian Ying will be reporting here on the second stop of his tour, which I guess is only a few days away. Let him do it then.”

”Don’t say that. The cadres and Party members from our village and neighboring villages are all looking forward to hearing from you. Although we are just a village branch, we also respond to the Party’s call to learn from heroic comrades. Please, you must not refuse!” the Party secretary pleaded.

Seeing the Party secretary’s eager attitude, Qin Jian finally agreed, ”Alright, I have time this Saturday evening. I think the space under our village’s stage is quite suitable. I will do the report there then.”

”Agreed! That’s settled then! I’ll go and announce it on the loudspeaker right away, so everyone will come to listen to your report. You’ve got to talk about how you courageously faced the fire and persisted!”
