The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 1320: Chapter 1320: Visitors from the Palace

After leaving the workshop, they got into the carriage; Ren Huai and Steward Xu both appeared utterly exhausted.

Even though the weather wasn’t hot, both men had sweat beading on their foreheads.

Steward Xu whispered, “Young Master Ren, it seems we can’t lower the price.”

Ren Huai gritted his teeth, “I truly misjudged her. Monarch Lu Xiang is not someone who is easily deceived. Look at the things she says, every time she hits the mark in our plans.”

Steward Xu asked, “What do we do now? Do we proceed with the business deal?”

“Proceed!” Ren Huai said through gritted teeth, “But let’s let her cool off a bit. I see she doesn’t want to lose our partnership either. If we don’t make a move, she’ll be the one who gets anxious.”

Ren Huai instructed, “In the next few days, we should make rounds in Jiangyuan County. If people from Monarch Lu Xiang’s side come, tell them we’re still waiting for the response from the capital, and the family head is still considering it. As long as they approach us, the initiative is ours.”

“Yes.”

Ren Huai thought this was a good plan, and indeed, Shu Yu’s people came calling the next day.

Just as Ren Huai breathed a sigh of relief, the other party said, “Young Master Ren, I am Ying Dong, the butler of the Lu family. The Village Chief instructed that since Young Master Ren is new to Jiangyuan County and might not be familiar with it, as hosts, it’s only right to extend some hospitality. Therefore, she instructed me to provide a guide for Young Master Ren. Wherever you wish to go or whatever you want to learn, just ask him.”

Ren Huai’s face twisted for a moment, and Steward Xu whispered in his ear, “Young Master Ren, perhaps Monarch Lu Xiang wants to use this method to keep an eye on us, fearing we might leave and the business will fail.”

While Ren Huai thought this unlikely, Steward Xu’s words brought him some comfort.

He thanked Ying Dong, who left someone behind and then returned.

Shu Yu arranged someone to entertain Ren Huai, feeling she had been sufficiently courteous; she didn’t need to disturb them frequently. She figured once he had made a decision, he would come to her.

So she continued with her own affairs, completely ignoring Ren Huai and his companion.

At this time, the people from the palace in the capital arrived in Jiangyuan County.

The purchasers from the palace came along with the official who announced the decree.

Compared to Ren Huai’s discreet arrival with only two carriages, their entourage was much grander.

They had three carriages and over a dozen guards, and when they arrived grandly at the city gate, Wei Nan was already outside the city to greet them.

They marched into the city, heading towards the county office along the main street.

The citizens on both sides of the road watched the spectacle, each speculating what event had garnered such a grand welcome from the county magistrate.

Perhaps only a few knew that Wei Nan was about to get a promotion.

This included Old Master Ding of the Ding family, Third Young Master Fan, Jiang Yi of the Auspicious Wine Shop, the owner of the peach forest, and other merchants who paid attention to current events.

After all, who holds the position of county magistrate greatly influences them.

Of course, this also included Ren Huai and Steward Xu from the capital.

Hence, the two stood in the crowd, watching the excitement.

“Since the emperor ascended the throne, it seems like Lord Xiang is the first official to be transferred from the county town to the capital, right?”

Ren Huai nodded, “What’s interesting is that this Lord Xiang is the son-in-law of the Xiao family.”

Steward Xu was surprised, “Young Master Ren, are you suggesting that the emperor is doing it on purpose, to stir a rift between the Xiang family and the Xiao family?”

“Who knows?” Ren Huai shrugged, but suddenly he narrowed his eyes.
