Inheritance of Two Trillion

Chapter 2718: Chapter 1940: Remarkable Gains

For several consecutive days, the Zhenbei Group headquarters was exceptionally lively. The ongoing major investigation brought endless topics of discussion, with news updating daily and breakthroughs in insider information occurring every day.

Everyone, from top to bottom, was secretly discussing the situation. Judging by the current momentum, a big figure seemed destined to be held accountable this time.

In the midst of the speculations, the name that kept surfacing was—Caroline.

Back in the day, as the business president of the North American region of the group, she was incredibly prestigious. But over the past two years, it was unclear whether she had run out of luck or angered some deity. A scandal during her previous election campaign forced her to announce her permanent exit from the political scene, and now her career also faced a major setback.

In the last couple of days, even the media caught wind of the rumors and flocked to the Zhenbei Group headquarters to seek out information. Some journalists even camped outside 24/7.

Under such circumstances, the Zhenbei Group headquarters decided to temporarily house some of the top executives inside the headquarters building itself, as it had its own hotel.

The official reason was to avoid any executive being hounded by the media outside, which could lead to undesirable news and commentary.

In reality, it was also to confine the involved executives, preventing them from leaving and using any tactics to interfere with the investigation.

Although many believed Caroline was the culprit, before the official results were out, they couldn’t restrict only her entry and exit, as it would be too conspicuous and could be poorly received.

Therefore, everyone had to accompany each other in this confinement.

Even though the Zhenbei Group headquarters building was fully equipped with all essentials and the executives enjoyed exceptional privileges, being unable to step outside or even roam the streets felt psychologically confining and very uncomfortable.

Over time, many began to express grievances, particularly blaming Caroline.

But compared to others, Caroline was even more anxious.

The situation continued to escalate, and she didn’t know how far Robert had progressed in his damage control efforts.

Vice Chairman Morgan, after initially sending someone with the advice to ’remain calm and composed,’ had vanished these past days, which made everyone uneasy.

Even in solitude, Caroline couldn’t frequently call the outside for contact, as checking her call records could lead to unexplainable trouble.

In such a situation, Caroline naturally hasn’t contacted Maiyous and wasn’t in the mood to inquire about his situation.

Colin was convinced that Bai Xiaosheng was the one orchestrating this investigation behind the scenes against her.

Thinking of this made her grind her teeth in anger.

This Bai Xiaosheng troublesome character, she wondered how long he intended to harm her! Truly despicable!

In her anger, Caroline forgot that she had been plotting against Bai Xiaosheng in the first place, only to be thwarted with her sword barely out of its sheath.

She couldn’t possibly blame others for this.

Of course, this woman would never think of it that way.

On the fifth day of her anxiety, there was a turning point.

Vice Chairman Morgan sent someone to stealthily meet with Caroline.

The meeting place wasn’t Caroline’s temporary residence or her office, but a gym in the building.

The person Morgan sent was a female confidant who had little exposure to others, so as not to attract attention in such a situation.

Behind closed doors, the woman spoke the first words in days that lifted Caroline’s spirits.

”This morning, Mr. Wen Yan gave a confidential briefing to the vice chairmen about the investigation hitting a bottleneck.”

”Many people involved in the incident have changed their stories. Following the new leads has yielded significant results, but all evidence no longer points to one individual. The suspicion has expanded to include two or three regional heads.”

Looking at Caroline, the woman lowered her voice and smiled, ”Vice Chairman Morgan asked if this was your handiwork. It’s done quite brilliantly!”

This was indeed the scenario anticipated by the contingency plan Caroline had locked in her safe.

Caroline’s eyes sparkled as she smiled, ”Mr. Morgan is too kind. I merely have the habit of setting small contingency measures before taking action. It seems they have proven effective!”

Robert had handled the emergency strategy quite well; it seemed she needed to greatly reward him later! Caroline mused silently.

For her brother, at that moment, she felt a degree of satisfaction and approval.

”Vice Chairman Morgan said for you to remain patient and calm since the investigation has stalled. He will naturally join forces with other vice chairmen to pressure Mr. Wen Yan. After all, if the investigation leads nowhere, there’s no point in pursuing further, which might delay work, hinder unity, and attract relentless media attention.” The woman conveyed.

At the mention of the media, Caroline felt a twinge, ”Why did the media outside discover the news so quickly? Was it Mr. Morgan’s doing?”

”Yes.” The woman admitted straightforwardly, ”Only with external pressure can internal conflicts and contradictions be set aside to collectively maintain corporate interests and reputation, isn’t that true?”

Caroline neither accepted nor denied it and merely smiled.

The words sounded nice, but the media has always been a double-edged sword.

If Caroline didn’t have a backup plan and Wen Yan’s investigation was more forceful and resolute, the outcome could have been completely different.

Under excessive media pressure, there was always the possibility the group’s higher-ups might sacrifice her to maintain peace!

Of course, such a situation ultimately didn’t occur.

”Thank you, Mr. Morgan, for the careful consideration,” Caroline said with a faint smile.

The woman also smiled, ”I’m only here to inform you of this news in advance. To avoid any complications, I’ll be leaving now.”

Caroline nodded in acknowledgment.

After the woman left, Caroline felt much better.

Sure enough, by the afternoon, Wen Yan convened a high-level meeting to explain the penalties for responsible parties of the involved enterprises, announcing an end to the situation, while his department retained the right to pursue accountability.
