This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Wei Kaida didn’t want to discuss his own affairs, so Du Heng didn’t press him. Instead, he addressed Wei Kaida’s earlier point, saying, ”Wu Shengnan’s parents are both quite busy, so our respective parents haven’t met yet. But once they do, the wedding date will be set.”

”Among us four brothers, you had it the toughest at the start. I didn’t expect that after a few years, you’d actually be the most comfortable one,” Wei Kaida said, lowering his head to eat, his tone filled with emotion.

Du Heng chuckled. Regarding Wei Kaida’s sentiment, he could only offer one word: ”Luck.” But then again, it really was luck.

”You mentioned buying a house last time; I’ve already asked around for you,” Wei Kaida suddenly changed the subject. ”It’s a new house with fine decoration. The owner wants an additional 200,000 yuan for the renovation costs on top of the asking price.”

”I’ve seen it and had professionals inspect it. The renovation materials are good. While not top-of-the-line, there are no issues with quality or environmental safety. It’s move-in ready.”

Du Heng hummed in agreement. ”You’re quite reliable with these things. Ask the homeowner when they’re free; I’ll go take a look. If it’s suitable, I won’t look at any others.”

”Okay, I’ll ask him for you in a bit,” Wei Kaida agreed, then asked, ”I’ve always been curious. Your father-in-law is against you buying a house, right? So why do you insist on buying a new one? It’s such a good opportunity to get a free place, but you don’t seem very keen on it.”

Du Heng’s chopsticks paused. ”How should I put this? Not buying it would be fine too. Between the two of us, we’re a bit over two hundred pounds; we can live anywhere.”

Du Heng put down his chopsticks and took a sip of tea. ”Mainly, it just doesn’t feel right. I keep feeling like I’m not marrying a wife, but rather marrying into her family.”

”Besides, if I don’t have my own place, when I go for the ’picking up the bride’ ceremony on the wedding day, am I supposed to take her from the guest room to the master bedroom? Or from her father’s house to *her own* house?”

He suddenly grinned. ”This might sound a bit chauvinistic, but it just doesn’t feel right to me.”

Wei Kaida also put down his chopsticks and chuckled. ”I think you just have too much money and you’re itching to spend it. If I came across such a good deal, I’d be perfectly fine even if you were the one putting the red veil on my head!”

After saying this, he stopped eating, took out his phone, and started making inquiries for Du Heng.

”The homeowner is free right now and is heading over. The timing should be perfect; we’ll be done eating by the time he arrives.”

”Alright. I don’t have anything else scheduled anyway.”

Halfway through their meal, Du Heng, who seemed to have something on his mind, suddenly asked, ”Kaida, when are you and Li Nating free?”

Wei Kaida looked at Du Heng, puzzled. ”Why? Are you treating us to a meal?” He laughed. ”No need for a meal, just give us a bigger wedding gift.”

Du Heng seemed to want to say something but hesitated, then finally shook his head. ”What are you thinking? It’s about something else.”

”What is it?”

”Your kidney and heart deficiency isn’t a sudden illness; it’s developed over a long time. Therefore, your kidney essence must be weak.”

Du Heng spoke slowly, choosing his words carefully to avoid misunderstanding. ”And for the development of a fetus, while the mother’s condition is the primary factor, the health of the man’s kidney essence is also a very important indicator.”

Wei Kaida frowned. ”What are you getting at?”

”I was thinking, if it’s convenient for you both, you could come to our hospital for an amniocentesis. We can screen the fetus for any genetic diseases. It would be for the best, for all of you.”

Du Heng paused briefly. Seeing Wei Kaida’s expression relax slightly, he continued, ”Since it’s still early in the pregnancy, if we do find anything, we can address it promptly. Don’t you think?”

”Amniocentesis?” Wei Kaida’s brow furrowed. ”Is it safe? I mean, for both the mother and the fetus? I don’t know much about it, but I’ve heard amniocentesis can be quite risky.”

”Amniocentesis, also called amniotic membrane puncture, used to be done as a blind puncture, which was indeed very risky,” Du Heng quickly explained. ”But technology has advanced, and so have the techniques. While there’s still some risk, it’s not as dangerous as you’ve heard.”

”Moreover, our hospital’s technique for this is very mature. We haven’t had a single mishap to date. You can trust us.”

”You’re a Maternal and Child Hospital; you’re definitely specialists in this area.” Wei Kaida considered for a moment. ”Alright, then the sooner, the better. We’ll come find you tomorrow morning. How does that sound?”

Du Heng didn’t agree immediately. Instead, he asked, ”Is she at least sixteen weeks pregnant?”

”She’s a little more than a week short of that. Is that okay?”

”That’s fine. I’ll wait for you at the hospital tomorrow morning.”

With that settled, Du Heng, walking behind Wei Kaida, gave him a profound look, then quickly composed himself.

「Later, after the homeowner arrived, Du Heng saw the house Wei Kaida had found for him.」

It was 120 square meters, with three bedrooms and one living room, decorated in a modern minimalist style. All aspects were quite good, though the floor was a bit low—the 4th floor. However, Du Heng wasn’t particular about such details.

After a brief tour, Du Heng felt the additional 200,000 yuan for the renovation was a bit steep. He wasn’t familiar with the industry, so he wasn’t sure by how much, but looking at the modern minimalist decor and the furnishings and appliances, he felt it wasn’t quite worth that much.

However, considering the time he’d save, he figured he could let the seller earn a bit. Besides, thanks to Wei Kaida’s connection, the owner hadn’t inflated the actual house price.

He paid the deposit, and the matter was settled.

「The next morning.」

Du Heng arrived at the hospital early, waiting for Wei Kaida and Li Nating.

However, just as the hospital opened, Wei Kaida hadn’t arrived. Instead, Du Heng was met by a young man from the Hospital Office, who was carrying small, professional video recording equipment.

”What are you doing here?”

”Director Zheng asked me to get some footage of you, Dean.”

”What for?”

”He said it’s for a video. Also, so you can get used to it, as you might have to live broadcast your consultations with patients in the future.”

Du Heng frowned. What is all this nonsense?

However, he ignored the young man and focused on his own work.

He waited until noon, but Wei Kaida still hadn’t shown up.

When he called, Wei Kaida said he didn’t have time today but would definitely be there tomorrow. Du Heng felt an urge to curse.

If you’re coming tomorrow, couldn’t you have called earlier to let me know?

Being filmed all morning by the young man from the Hospital Office had made Du Heng very uncomfortable. When he heard they planned to continue filming in the afternoon, he promptly made himself scarce.

This life of being followed by a camera... Du Heng couldn’t get used to it yet; in fact, he found it rather repulsive.

He contacted the homeowner and went directly to the House Management Bureau to handle the transfer procedures.

However, the procedures were quite complicated and couldn’t be completed in a single trip.

Left with no choice, Du Heng had to call for reinforcements, phoning Wu Shengnan to come to the House Management Bureau.

”Honey, are you crazy? Didn’t you say you weren’t buying a house?” Wu Shengnan rushed to find Du Heng and immediately chided him. ”And for something this major, why didn’t you tell me beforehand?”

Du Heng grinned sheepishly. ”I just wanted to give you a surprise.”

Wu Shengnan shot Du Heng an exasperated look. ”Some surprise. This is more like a shock!”

Then, she took Du Heng’s arm. ”So, why did you call me over?”

”The paperwork can’t be finished today, and I really don’t want to make another trip.” Du Heng smiled and continued, ”So, how about you pull some strings for us? Maybe call in a favor?”

Hearing this, Wu Shengnan readily waved her hand. ”That’s no big deal. Wait, I’ll call my brother.”

Not long after she made the call, a middle-aged man came over. After some cheerful conversation, he took the documents from Du Heng and the homeowner, telling them not to worry about the rest; someone would deliver the new property deed to Du Heng.

Watching the middle-aged man leave, Du Heng couldn’t help but sigh. This blasted network of connections—it’s just too damn convenient!

Du Heng paid in full, with no other complicated procedures. Once the homeowner received the money, they cheerfully handed the keys to Du Heng.

Although Wu Shengnan had initially grumbled about Du Heng buying the house, she eagerly took the keys, insisting on seeing the inside, her enthusiasm palpable.

Once at the house, Wu Shengnan was very pleased with it.

Especially upon learning it would be their marital home, she immediately had a flood of ideas for modifying the modern minimalist decor.

Du Heng didn’t interfere, letting her do as she pleased.

And Wu Shengnan was indeed invested in the house. She skipped work the very next day and hired a renovation crew to start immediately. It seemed she didn’t want to delay a single moment.

When she invited Du Heng to join her, he decisively refused; he had to help Wei Kaida with something that day.

”Kai, you come get your blood drawn too.” Seeing Li Nating being led away by the Obstetrician for the amniocentesis, Du Heng pulled Wei Kaida over.

Wei Kaida looked momentarily dazed. ”Why do I need a blood test?”

”To check your current physical condition; we need it for comparison.” Du Heng looked at Wei Kaida disdainfully. ”You barely understand the basics of traditional Chinese medicine, let alone anything about Western medicine. Just do as I say. Would I harm you?”

Still in a daze, Wei Kaida had a tube of blood drawn by the nurse and then, just as confused, was ushered out by Du Heng.

After sending them off, Du Heng immediately picked up the phone and called the Obstetrician who had performed the amniocentesis. ”Thanks for your hard work. Please bring the samples to me.”

Once he had the samples, Du Heng rushed to Provincial First Hospital without delay.

Xu Pinglin was puzzled by Du Heng’s actions. After they left the Paternity Identification Center together, he couldn’t help but say, ”Dean Du, what you’re doing is against regulations, you know.”

Du Heng nodded. ”I know. But my friend’s situation is very unusual. He has kidney and heart deficiency, and his kidney essence is depleted. Yet, right at this time, his girlfriend got pregnant. It makes me suspicious.”

Xu Pinglin frowned and said slowly, ”This kidney essence depletion your friend is experiencing is a recent development, isn’t it? Three or four months ago, conception should still have been possible, right?”

”It was indeed possible, but generally speaking, the chances would be very low.”
