This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Wang Shuqiu’s father nodded, comforting Wang Shuqiu’s mother while helping her onto the bed.

Just as Du Heng had said, it wasn’t long before Wang Shuqiu’s mother fell asleep. She slept soundly until one o’clock in the afternoon.

Seeing Wang Shuqiu’s mother wake up, Du Heng took two steps back, trying to stay out of her line of sight as much as possible.

Du Heng was afraid his appearance might distress Wang Shuqiu’s mother, potentially overstimulating her so soon after she had awakened.

If that happened, it would indeed be a troublesome matter.

Wang Shuqiu’s father, however, quickly moved closer and softly called out to her.

But as Wang Shuqiu’s mother opened her eyes, disappointment gradually filled everyone’s gaze.

She merely stared at the people before her, appearing confused and bewildered. It seemed she was struggling to recognize who they were and trying to connect them with her memories.

At first glance, her condition seemed unchanged, but Du Heng quietly sighed in relief.

Her expression had shifted from empty and devoid of emotion to one of confusion and doubt—a clear sign of improvement and progress.

Du Heng had anticipated this. Wang Shuqiu’s mother’s condition couldn’t be treated like Wang Shiyuan’s wife, who had recovered after a single dose of medicine.

Wang Shiyuan’s wife suffered from liver qi stagnation due to excessive grief, requiring only a single dose of medicine to show effect.

But Wang Shuqiu’s mother’s condition involved injury to her stomach and Heart from extreme fright, leading to an inhibited flow of qi and blood. If the medication was too strong, it could clear her mind instantly, but it would also worsen the strain on her spirit and Heart, leaving side effects.

”Young man, why doesn’t she recognize anyone yet?” Wang Shuqiu’s father asked, a little panicked as he looked nervously at Du Heng.

”Uncle, this is normal. Don’t worry. Let Auntie eat something, and then she can have the second dose of medicine.”

Wang Shuqiu’s father was now completely at a loss and did whatever Du Heng said.

Just as he was about to get off the bed to fetch some food, Liao Yuzhu had already sprung into action, hurrying to the kitchen. In no time, she returned with a bowl of noodles and another bowl of soupy noodles that had been soaked until they were mushy.

This wasn’t because Du Heng still harbored any resentment and was unwilling to give Wang Shuqiu’s mother something better to eat; it was genuinely for the sake of her recovery.

After she finished eating, there was no further delay. Wang Shuqiu’s mother took the second dose of decoction medicine. Soon after, she began to feel drowsy again and fell into a deep sleep.

Meanwhile, Du Heng, Liao Yuzhu, and Wang Shuqiu’s father moved to the living room to wait.

This time, however, their wait wasn’t long. Just two hours later, they heard someone calling out from the bedroom.

Du Heng didn’t go in. He sat quietly in the living room, playing with the Child in the nanny’s arms.

After a short while, Liao Yuzhu came out. ”Heng, Auntie is awake and can recognize people now, but her reactions are a bit slow.”

”That’s normal. Her mind has been blank for half a year, so some sluggishness is to be expected.”

”Uncle asked me what we should do now.”

Du Heng let out a long breath. ”Chat with her for a while, then let Auntie sleep again. She has just awakened, and her spirit isn’t stable yet. Don’t let her overexert her mind. Sleep is the best way to recuperate her spirit.”

Liao Yuzhu nodded. ”Heng, aren’t you going in?”

Du Heng shook his head. ”I won’t. There’s nothing for me to say. You go in and keep her company.”

”Alright then.” Liao Yuzhu turned and went back into the inner room.

Just as she went in, the sound of footsteps came from the courtyard.

”Third Brother, you said this morning you were going to have your wife’s illness treated. How is she?”

The voice arrived before the person did.

Two seconds later, the Old Lady from that morning walked in, holding two cooked potatoes.

Upon entering, she looked around but didn’t see Wang Shuqiu’s father. When she saw the nanny and the Child, she grinned and moved closer to the nanny. ”Oh, this Child is so precious! He looks just like Xiao Fang when he was young.”

She then tried to sit next to the nanny, but the nanny didn’t even glance at the Old Lady. Instead, she stood up and carried the Child into another inner room.

The Old Lady’s face stiffened. She shot a resentful look at the nanny’s retreating back and muttered, ”This Child is so pitiful, without a father from such a young age...”

”Watch what you’re saying! I’m the Child’s godfather.” Hearing the Old Lady’s tactless words, Du Heng immediately retorted, his eyes sharp.

I’m a guest here too, so it’s not really my place to overstep.

If this were my own house, I’d have bloody well kicked her out ages ago!

”Oh, dear, I misspoke.” The Old Lady glanced at Du Heng and placed the potatoes in front of him. ”I just cooked these. Here, have these two and try them.”

”No, thank you. We just ate.” Du Heng took out his mobile phone and, looking down, began to fiddle with it.

The Old Lady didn’t seem embarrassed at all. She leaned in closer again and asked, ”This morning, Third Brother said you were going to treat his wife. How did it go?”

Du Heng grunted noncommittally without lifting his head.

He really couldn’t stand this shameless Old Lady. What on earth was she after?

”Let me tell you, Third Brother’s wife has a condition that even the big hospitals in the county can’t cure. You shouldn’t waste your effort. You’ll only make Third Brother more upset.”

The Old Lady continued, self-importantly, ”Third Brother’s wife has had her soul frightened out of her, and it’s been captured by her dead brother’s spirit! You should find a ’master’ to call her soul back, then go to the Temple and make a wish. That’s how Third Brother’s wife will get better.”

Du Heng didn’t want to engage with her any further and stood up to walk outside.

He was afraid that if he stayed a second longer, he’d end up throwing this gossipy Old Lady out himself.

”Auntie, is that you? Please come in and talk with me.” Just as Du Heng stood up, a voice came from the inner room.

The voice was clear but very soft and faint, the words seeming to drift out.

The Old Lady was startled and stood up, wanting to ask something, but then realized Du Heng was no longer beside her.

”Auntie, since you’re here, please come in and keep me company.”

The Old Lady’s legs trembled. Her face filled with shock as she stared into the room, and then she walked in with hesitant, quivering steps.

”Oh, my dear girl! You’ve suffered so much!” Upon entering and seeing Wang Shuqiu’s mother sitting up, the Old Lady was immediately overcome with sorrow. She started wailing, slapping her thigh, and tried to get onto the bed.

Liao Yuzhu was also thoroughly annoyed with this Old Lady. Unlike Du Heng, she wasn’t constrained by politeness or rules of etiquette.

She reached out, grabbed the Old Lady’s arm, and practically lifted her out of the inner room. Without letting go, she then marched the Old Lady straight outside.

The Old Lady was dumbfounded, her little steps scrambling to keep up, terrified Liao Yuzhu would pull her over. She forgot about crying and asked anxiously, ”Girl, what are you doing?”

”My Auntie just woke up and can’t be disturbed. Besides, we just had her soul called back. Your presence might negatively affect her. You should go home for now. Once my Auntie has fully recovered, you can come visit then.”

Liao Yuzhu didn’t stop walking as she spoke, escorting the Old Lady out of the main gate without giving her any chance to resist.

SLAM!

After ushering the woman out, Liao Yuzhu firmly shut the main gate.

Du Heng, who was in the courtyard, couldn’t help but give Liao Yuzhu a thumbs-up. She had done exactly what he had wanted to do but hadn’t dared.

”That old woman is so annoying,” Liao Yuzhu said, pursing her lips with a disdainful expression. She walked over to Du Heng and asked, ”Heng, what’s the plan for Auntie now?”

”You all go keep her company and chat for a bit, then let her sleep for a while. At eleven o’clock tonight, she’ll take the third dose of decoction medicine. By tomorrow, she should be completely recovered.”

One dose to dispel phlegm, two doses to awaken the spirit, and three doses to completely eliminate the illness causing her stupor. The entire treatment process was perfectly under his control.

Du Heng finally relaxed. It felt as if a burden on his Heart had been lifted.

”Does she not need any tonics or supplements?”

”No need. She hasn’t been ill for long, so her body isn’t severely depleted. If she eats well, drinks enough, and rests properly, she’ll recover on her own within a week.”

”So, are we staying another night then?”

”Yes. Let’s observe her for one more night, just to be safe.”

Liao Yuzhu smiled. ”That’s perfect. Auntie can see the Child then.”

Du Heng suddenly seemed to understand why Liao Yuzhu had insisted on bringing the Child. She was actually here to show off.
