This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Du Heng stared directly at Qiu Pingzhen. ”You and Finance figure something out. The expenditure must comply with regulations. And don’t bother me with such matters again.”

”Oh.” Qiu Pingzhen hunched his shoulders and quickly slipped away.

Du Heng glanced coldly at the ongoing interview. He pulled the Hospital Office Director, Zheng, who was beside him. ”Zheng, have Deputy Dean Lu take over. Try to steer the conversation towards our Hospital. We can’t let our money go to waste.”

Zheng nodded. ”I’ll arrange it immediately.”

As for why Du Heng had stopped the interview, Zheng wisely refrained from asking.

Du Heng exhaled sharply, walked out of his office, and after a few steps, having nowhere else to go for the moment, headed straight to Qiu Pingzhen’s office.

Sitting in Qiu Pingzhen’s office chair, Du Heng felt increasingly uneasy. He picked up the phone and dialed a number.

”Li Qin, isn’t Feng Su being rather unscrupulous by doing this?” Du Heng asked bluntly the moment the call connected.

Li Qin, on the other end of the line, was silent for a moment. After a long pause, he said, ”I only just found out by watching the live broadcast myself. I have no idea what Susu was thinking; she didn’t discuss it with me.”

”Give me an explanation,” Du Heng said, his tone unfriendly and clearly carrying a hint of threat.

Feng Su’s actions were treating him like a fool.

If he didn’t get a satisfactory explanation, they couldn’t blame him for playing dirty.

Li Qin understood this perfectly.

Regardless, Du Heng was now Feng Su’s attending Physician. The Decoction medicine, part of her traditional Chinese medicine treatment, could cure her illness and allow her to live a normal life. Conversely, it wouldn’t be difficult to use it to make her suffer a little.

”Du Heng, I apologize on Susu’s behalf for this incident. I can roughly guess why she did it. She likely saw your immense popularity and that the discussion around her condition wasn’t as intense as anticipated. So, she wanted to seize this opportunity to generate some buzz for herself.”

Li Qin paused briefly. ”Du Heng, I hope you can understand. As a celebrity, Susu needs this kind of attention—the kind that involves widespread public participation.”

Du Heng’s tone remained unchanged. ”Couldn’t she have communicated beforehand?” he said coldly. ”Did she have to wait until we had everything prepared and the interview had already begun to suddenly jump in? Is this how you celebrities operate?”

”I’m sorry. I’ll have Susu give you an explanation.”

”Make it soon. I’m petty.”

Li Qin retorted irritably from the other end, ”Go to hell!” Then he hung up on Du Heng.

After the call, Du Heng felt extremely bored. He lay back in Qiu Pingzhen’s chair, spinning it idly, his mind wandering.

A harsh ringtone eventually broke Du Heng’s aimless state.

After hanging up, Du Heng rose and left.

When he reached the Hospital Hall, he noticed the security guards were much more spirited than a few days prior. While not arrogant, they all walked about the Hall with their heads held high. They had also become considerably more enthusiastic, proactively assisting Patients who came for medical attention and taking on some functions of the guidance counter. This was particularly evident at the self-service registration machines, where they played a significant role.

However, when Du Heng saw that unsightly bunch outside the Hall, holding their mobile phones and filming indiscriminately, his recently improved mood soured once more.

How should I put it? Calling these people ’internet celebrities’ is an insult to the term itself.

Last night, Du Heng had specifically searched for these individuals’ videos and Live broadcast rooms. One word to describe their performances: ’cringeworthy.’ One word for their live broadcasting style: ’sensationalist.’ And one word to summarize them: ’ignorant and unskilled.’ Even the ’spirited lad’ who coined the slogan, ”Though XX be small, miracles it shall call!” was leagues above these people. If creators like ’Wang Xingxing’ and the ’Jiao Jiawan Boy Group’ were the ever-rising ceiling of short video of Jinzhou, then these people currently live broadcasting in the Hospital represented the collapsing basement of the short video of Jinzhou industry.

Sigh, how vexing. As long as they don’t disturb others, I’ll just pretend not to see them.

Du Heng turned and entered the consultation room. Inside, he saw the three novices from the Chinese Medicine Department, all looking bewildered and cautious. In front of them sat a familiar-looking middle-aged woman accompanied by a younger woman. Both were looking expectantly at the three doctors.

”Dean, you’re here!” Seeing Du Heng enter, all three quickly stood up.

Du Heng gestured with his hand. ”Settle down. Tell me, what’s going on?”

The three exchanged glances. Finally, Li Shuxun stepped forward. ”The Patient is a 30-year-old woman. For three months, her appetite has significantly increased, yet she continues to lose weight. Her complexion has changed from fair to sallow-dark, and she reported losing over 5 kilograms since yesterday.”

Du Heng sat opposite the Patient and began his examination, casually asking, ”Hasn’t she been checked at other hospitals?”

”The Patient stated she has visited many hospitals,” Li Shuxun replied. ”Initially, hypothyroidism was suspected. However, a Check-up revealed normal thyroid function. Furthermore, an Internal Medicine Department Check-up showed her urine sugar and blood sugar levels were within normal ranges. Therefore, no definitive diagnosis was made.”

Du Heng nodded slowly. ”So, what was your conclusion after your Check-ups? Were you unable to determine the cause?”

The three exchanged glances again. After a long moment, Li Shuxun continued, ”Our inquiries revealed the Patient is overworked and frequently feels hungry. She experiences unbearable hunger, palpitations, and dizziness within half an hour of eating. Moreover, she suffers from excessive thirst and frequent urination. For the past ten days, whenever she feels hungry, she has experienced palpitations, shortness of breath, sweating, blackouts, and dizziness. She also has difficulty walking due to weakness in her limbs. Upon Check-up, the Patient’s tongue is red with no coating. Her pulse is thready, rapid, and lacks spirit, and it is particularly deficient in the chi (cubital) position.”

As Li Shuxun spoke, he glanced cautiously at Du Heng, hesitating to continue.

Du Heng looked back at him. ”Go on. Why did you stop?”

Li Shuxun coughed lightly and finally mustered the courage to say, ”Considering the Dean’s explanation of diabetes insipidus disease records a few days ago, we diagnosed the Patient as suffering from a severe case of ’three-fold wasting’ syndrome. But... but...”

Listening to Li Shuxun’s stammering, the nascent smile on Du Heng’s face vanished. ”But what? Spit it out!” he snapped.

Li Shuxun swallowed nervously and glanced at the other two, but they both pointedly avoided his gaze.

Left with no choice, Li Shuxun continued, ”But after a Check-up, there were no significant changes in the Patient’s blood pressure, blood sugar, or blood lipids. This means she isn’t a ’three high’ Patient or a diabetes Patient. So...”

Du Heng’s brow furrowed slightly. ”So you believe the diagnosis of diabetes insipidus is incorrect?”

Seeing the change in Du Heng’s expression, Li Shuxun could only nod cautiously.

Du Heng paused his examination of the Patient. He turned and swept a sharp, serious gaze over the three novices, causing them to instinctively lower their heads.

”Have I ever said that ’three highs’ and diabetes are classified as diabetes insipidus?”

The three exchanged furtive glances and then nodded in unison.

Du Heng pressed on, ”Then, have I ever said that diabetes insipidus *must* be ’three highs’ or diabetes?”

The three looked startled, then shook their heads vigorously.

”And I ask you, when diagnosing and treating Patients, why do you insist on cross-referencing with Western medicine disease names as the basis for your own diagnostic conclusions?” Du Heng’s tone was sharp as he spoke. This problem had persisted since he began supervising at the outpatient service of Provincial First Hospital last year; Li Jianwei’s group of Graduate students had consistently made this error. Du Heng had corrected them countless times. He hadn’t expected Li Shuxun to repeat the same mistake today, which displeased him. Coupled with the frustrations of the past couple of days, Du Heng’s bad temper was already simmering, and it flared up unexpectedly.

However, recalling the Patient was right there, Du Heng reined in his bad temper. ”Diabetes insipidus is a symptomatic category. ’Three high’ and diabetes fall within this category. However, this does not mean that diabetes insipidus *is exclusively* ’three high’ or diabetes. You must commit this to memory. Never try to force traditional Chinese medicine diagnoses to fit Western medicine disease names. That approach will harm both your Patients and yourselves.”

Hearing the softened tone in Du Heng’s voice, the three hurriedly nodded.
