This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

”Haven’t they left yet?”

The male doctor shook his head. ”They asked when they came this morning, and I told them you were in a meeting, so they left. But in the afternoon, they came back with more people, all waiting at the door of the outpatient service’s consultation room.”

Du Heng looked at the things in his hand and hesitated for a moment. ”Let’s go and have a look now.”

Upon reaching the outpatient service’s consultation room, Du Heng hesitated a bit.

Were there many people? Not really, just over a dozen people.

But they were all old men and women, with only one relatively young woman who seemed impatient, wanting to leave but held tightly by an Auntie in front of her.

When Du Heng saw these patients, the elderly also saw him coming. They immediately stood up excitedly and swarmed over, as if they wanted to be near Du Heng.

”Doctor Du, I’ve been waiting for you all morning.”

”Doctor Du, your medicine is really effective. I followed your house and drank it for a week. I haven’t been feeling dizzy these days, and my palpitations are gone too.”

”Doctor Du, it’s the same for me. My blood pressure and blood sugar have gone down a lot. It’s just that my blood sugar is still a bit high after eating every day. Can you check it for me?”

...

For a while, Du Heng’s ears were filled with the chattering voices of the elderly.

It suddenly gave him the illusion that he was not in the Chinese Medicine Department of the Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital, but in the Geriatrics Department of some other hospital.

Du Heng was annoyed by the noise but couldn’t interrupt, so he had to shout loudly, ”Uncles and aunts, let me say a few words, please. If you all speak like this, I can’t hear anything.”

”Alright, Doctor Du, you speak.”

”Everyone be quiet and let Doctor Du speak.”

Finally, it quieted down around him, and Du Heng felt sweat forming on his forehead.

”Uncles and aunts, I apologize first. It was my issue that caused you all to wait all morning. I am really sorry; I apologize to everyone,” Du Heng sincerely apologized.

Unexpectedly, his sincere apology made his head throb again.

”It’s okay; we live nearby and have nothing to do all day, so waiting doesn’t matter.”

”Doctor Du, you’re not only a Doctor but also the Dean of the Hospital, so you’re busy every day. We all understand.”

”Doctor Du, you don’t need to apologize.”

”Doctor Du, I brought my daughter here. You see... SOB SOB SOB...”

A strange sound.

Du Heng was surrounded by old men and women, and his mind was a mess, as if he had heard everything and nothing at the same time.

”Uncles and aunts, I have some matters to deal with in the Hospital today, so I really don’t have time for the outpatient service.

”Tomorrow, I will be in the outpatient service for a whole day, so there’s no need to worry. Can you all come back tomorrow?”

As soon as Du Heng finished speaking, an Old Lady said, ”Alright, we’ll come tomorrow.”

”Doctor Du, you should attend to your important matters first; we’re not in a hurry.”

Everyone said their piece and gradually began to leave, all appearing to be quite reasonable.

However, after everyone left, the only young woman was in a tug-of-war with an Old man, who in turn held her tightly.

But the young woman didn’t seem very determined and was pulled back to Du Heng’s side by the Old man, despite her resistance.

”Doctor Du, I came to see you last week. Do you remember?” The Old man brought the young woman to Du Heng and immediately began speaking with a smile.

Upon seeing this situation, Du Heng immediately remembered what was going on.

After all, for the past Two weeks, those who came to see him were old men and old women. The only one who didn’t come for treatment was the one who asked about infertility for her daughter, which left a deep impression on Du Heng.

”Auntie, is this your daughter?”

”Yes, yes, yes, Doctor Du, you still remember.” The Old Lady turned around and shot her daughter a reproachful look. ”My girl is busy with her job; she just took time off this afternoon. Please, Doctor Du, help us with a look. It will just take a few minutes of your time.”

Du Heng saw that the other old men and old women had already left, so he said, ”Alright, go to The First Floor to register.”

”Alright, we will go register now.”

The Old Lady was very excited, pulling her daughter towards The First Floor.

”Mother, is Doctor Du reliable? He looks kind of young,” the woman questioned Du Heng after they were out of his earshot.

The Old Lady didn’t let go of her daughter’s hand, fearing the girl would slip away.

Hearing her daughter’s doubts, she said irritably, ”I’ve been telling you about this for a week. How can you not listen at all?

”Don’t be fooled by his young appearance; he is now the Dean of this Hospital. Without real skills, who do you think can be the Dean?

”Also, last week I specifically went to check what Doctor Du said. He really has provided treatment for several childless cases. In the Health Clinic where he used to work, there are still silk banners given by patients and promotional photos.

”I’ve shown you all these things; why don’t you believe me?”

The woman helplessly followed her mother’s footsteps to The First Floor. ”Mother, Zhang said if we can’t have children, we could just not have any. We can be DINKs, earning money and spending it on ourselves. Isn’t that great?”

”Nonsense.” The Old Lady angrily pinched the back of her daughter’s hand, making the woman’s face contort. ”You are still young now and think that having no children is quite good. But what about when you get older?

”If that boy wants a Child then, but you have become too old, what will you do?”

The Old Lady sighed as she walked. ”Men still have a chance to have children when they are forty, fifty, or even sixty years old. But we women can’t.

”Once we are over forty, we become advanced age pregnant women, and who knows, we might reach menopause any day, completely losing the chance to have children. At that time, it will be too late to cry.”

”Mother, that’s such a yellow calendar. Technology is so advanced now; with the help of medicine, a fifty-year-old can still give birth.”

The Old Lady got angry. ”Then you have a Baby now! You are thirty and still can’t have one. Do you think you will be able to at fifty?”

”Mother, both our bodies are fine. In a few years, when we want a Child, we can just have a test-tube baby, isn’t that alright?”

”Do you think your Mother is stupid and knows nothing?” The Old Lady didn’t mince words in refuting her daughter. ”Test-tube babies have a certain probability of success, and since you can’t conceive naturally, how high do you think the probability is for test-tube babies?

”And the cost of test-tube babies, how much money does that take?

”Moreover, test-tube babies are against the natural order; they are definitely not as good as natural conception. You have the opportunity to conceive naturally now, so why not cherish it?”

After saying this, the Old Lady didn’t want to talk to her daughter anymore and just pulled her along to complete the registration procedures, never letting go of her hand.

When they returned after registering, the woman muttered with the registration slip in her hand, ”Really, we are the only ones left, but they still made us register. This Doctor is really obsessed with money, not even letting go of the 15 yuan registration fee.”

”You shut up.” The Old Lady was extremely annoyed. ”Is he greedy for your little registration fee? He’s doing this for the sake of formality. Once you have registered, all the Check-ups and medicine he prescribes for you will be on record. It’s for your protection, as well as for the Doctor’s protection.

”If there’s a problem with the medication, who will you complain to? If you disregard his advice and take the wrong medication, causing problems, who will the Doctor seek justice from?”

The woman looked at her mother in astonishment. ”Mother, have you become so knowledgeable?”

”Do you look down on your Mother? I have eaten more salt than you have traveled roads. Don’t think your Mother is some short-sighted person who only wants cheap stuff. Hurry up and go; don’t delay Doctor Du’s time.”

Watching the mother and daughter walk away hand in hand, Du Heng was also slightly stunned.

He had thought that the daughter could just stay here and start the Check-up, and the Old Lady could simply go downstairs to help with the registration.

However, this didn’t matter. With a slight smile, he went to the consultation room with the male doctor.
