This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Back in the Emergency Department, after all the monitoring instruments were connected, Du Heng breathed a sigh of relief as Liang Sen’s vital signs seemed stable. ”Director Zhou, I’d like to prescribe a medicine to resolve blood stasis and promote regeneration. Would that be okay?”

Not being on his home turf, Du Heng felt somewhat constrained, having to ask Zhou Yixian’s opinion on everything.

”Of course, no problem. Just treat him according to your plan.”

Zhou Yixian paused for a moment, then said seriously to Du Heng, ”President Du, after you write the prescription, I hope you can document the treatment process. Please make it as detailed as possible—for example, why you chose this particular acupoint and what precautions are necessary. Would that be convenient for you?”

Du Heng nodded. ”There’s nothing inconvenient about it. I’ll write it.”

Zhou Yixian immediately beamed. ”Excellent! I’ll find a few people to observe and learn. If they have any questions, President Du, I’ll have to trouble you to explain things to them.”

Du Heng eyed Zhou Yixian. He’s not just planning to learn, he’s planning to learn thoroughly! ”Alright, if there’s anything you don’t understand, just ask me.”

From then until noon, Liang Sen drank another dose of Decoction medicine. Throughout the waiting period, Du Heng continuously monitored him. It was only when Liang Sen’s pulse was no longer erratic and a distinct sparkle had returned to his eyes that Du Heng finally felt confident enough to remove the fine needles.

However, he didn’t leave. He remained by Liang Sen’s bedside, explaining his treatment rationale to the assembled doctors while closely observing Liang Sen’s reactions.

The individuals Zhou Yixian had brought in listened with intense focus.

Especially with a living example right in front of them, they were even more engrossed.

By noon, Du Heng had finished explaining the treatment process. Liang Sen, who had been under constant care, finally showed normal readings on all the monitoring instruments.

Zhou Yixian looked at the group, who seemed thoroughly satisfied, and then a contented smile appeared on his face as well.

”President Du, you should be free today, right? Shouldn’t I make up for that meal from yesterday?”

Du Heng still said very apologetically, ”I’m really sorry, Director Zhou. I have an appointment with my brother-in-law today, and it’s a gathering I absolutely must attend. Next time, I’ll definitely take you up on that meal.”

”Brother-in-law? President Du, you’re married?” Zhou Yixian’s eyes widened. ”That’s not very considerate of you! Such a momentous occasion as getting married, and you didn’t even send me an invitation? Are you looking down on me?”

Du Heng quickly explained the reasons, wanting to avoid any misunderstanding.

Afterward, Du Heng left the Emergency Department. Just as he stepped out, Liang Hehai blocked his path. ”Du Heng, how is Liang Sen now?”

”He’s fine. He should be transferred to a regular hospital room by this afternoon, and then you can go be with him.”

As he spoke, Du Heng spotted two familiar figures. ”Liu, what are you doing here?”

Liu Gong chuckled lightly. ”How could I not come when someone was nearly beaten to death? Is the person inside okay?”

”He’s out of the critical period. If there are no changes by the afternoon, he’ll be transferred to a general hospital room.”

”Good, as long as he’s fine. By the way, is the Director of the Emergency Department here? I need to go in and ask about a few things.”

”He’s here. Do you want me to take you in?”

”No need. You go on with your business. I have some matters to discuss.”

Du Heng nodded. ”Alright, let’s catch up when we have time.”

As soon as he left the Emergency Department, Du Heng called Wu Shengnan.

”I thought you’d left.”

”I didn’t, but I did get my car washed.” Wu Shengnan showed Du Heng the fruits of her labor. ”By the way, how is he?”

”He’s alive and out of danger, though I suspect there might be some minor lasting effects.”

”What kind of lasting effects?”

”For example, his hand might twitch from time to time, or his mouth might.” Du Heng sighed. This was an irreversible injury, and there was truly nothing he could do about it. ”Let’s not talk about him anymore,” he said. ”Let’s go find your brother.”

Wu Shengnan didn’t offer Du Heng the driver’s seat and started the car herself. ”Right, right! My sister-in-law has already called several times to hurry us along.”

”Did the check-up results come out?”

”They did.” Wu Shengnan, while starting the car, glanced oddly at Du Heng. ”Just as you said, the problem lies with my brother.”

Du Heng wasn’t surprised by this answer. He leaned back against the passenger seat. ”How did your brother sound on the phone?”

”My sister-in-law didn’t say explicitly, but from what I gathered, it sounds like he’s taken it pretty hard.” Wu Shengnan looked at Du Heng again. ”Husband, are you sure you can cure him? If you’re lying, my brother will be devastated.”

”Didn’t they ask other doctors if it’s curable?”

”They did, several of them.” Wu Shengnan pursed her lips, displeased. ”My sister-in-law said the Western medicine doctors couldn’t help. Among the traditional Chinese medicine doctors they consulted, most claimed my brother had a kidney problem and advised him to nourish his kidneys. Their approach was completely different from yours. The only doctor whose opinion was similar to yours wasn’t confident and just said they could try.”

”I haven’t even taken your brother’s pulse or examined him yet, so I can’t make any guarantees right now.”

”Please, you have to guarantee it this time. You managed to save someone who was on the brink of death. My brother’s problem should be a piece of cake for you.”

Du Heng looked at Wu Shengnan with a wry smile. ”Those are two completely different things.” Then Du Heng explained to her why.

When they arrived at the agreed-upon location, they both tacitly stopped talking.

At this moment, Wu Shengnan’s sister-in-law’s face showed a mixture of relief, acceptance, happiness, and an even more indescribable emotion.

Seeing Du Heng enter, the couple’s attitude towards him was incredibly awkward, especially since neither of them had treated him well previously.

But now, they had to greet Du Heng with smiles, forcing out the word ”welcome.”

Du Heng was inwardly gloating. If Wu Shengnan hadn’t been there, he would have been tempted to point at their faces and laugh out loud. But one shouldn’t be too arrogant. Du Heng acted as if nothing was amiss. After exchanging pleasantries, he began to examine Wu Shengnan’s brother.

As Du Heng continued his examination, every subtle change in his expression caused the couple’s hearts to flutter. Their emotions were entirely at Du Heng’s mercy.

Just as he finished the examination, Du Heng sighed softly.

”What’s wrong?” Seeing her brother and sister-in-law’s expressions change, Wu Shengnan quickly asked.

”The liver fails to store blood,” Du Heng began. ”Manifesting upwards, it presents as a sallow complexion, eye discomfort, and vision problems. Manifesting downwards, well...”

Du Heng didn’t elaborate further. He gave a light cough and said, ”With such obvious symptoms, you should have gone to the hospital for a check-up much earlier. The more you delayed, the more serious it became. Furthermore, I’m sure you have a bad habit of staying up late for work, which has only aggravated the liver damage. Fortunately, you don’t smoke or drink. Otherwise, not even an immortal could save you.”
