This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

You should hurry up and inform the family members about the situation. I believe they must have prepared themselves mentally already.”

Director Zhang paused briefly before saying, ”We’ll leave first; we’re still busy in the ward.”

After finishing, he and Director Li left together.

Du Heng had good luck on his journey, hardly encountering any red lights and keeping his foot on the gas pedal the whole time. He arrived at his destination in less than thirty minutes, a trip that would normally take forty minutes or more.

After parking the car, Du Heng quickened his pace. Qiu Pingzhen also jogged to catch up with him.

At the entrance of the emergency room, the first thing Du Heng saw was a woman kneeling on the ground, facing the consultation room, with two young children beside her. All three of them had their hands clasped together, murmuring something under their breath.

Whenever he visited the Municipal First Hospital Emergency Department, Du Heng would usually see several such cases. Zhou Yixian had even told him that there were even more people on the rooftop and in the corridor next to the emergency operating room, and they were even more devout.

He once joked with Du Heng that if an incense burner and a shrine were placed at the entrance of the Emergency Department, it would probably become the most popular praying spot in the world.

Du Heng glanced at the scene but didn’t pay much more attention, instead asking a nurse who happened to be passing by about Zhou Yixian’s whereabouts.

Although Qiu Pingzhen had worked in the hospital and was addressed as a doctor, he genuinely didn’t know how to treat patients. He had never been on the front lines, nor had he ever seen what an emergency department looked like.

The most intense situation he had ever encountered was anxious husbands and family members waiting outside the delivery room.

Now, upon first seeing the disabled woman and the two children kneeling in prayer, for the first time, he felt that being a doctor might involve more than just conducting examinations, prescribing medicine, and dispensing drugs.

The scene caused his heart to shrink abruptly.

Before he could give it much thought, a sudden loud sobbing sound came from just a few steps away, causing him to shudder in fear.

Had they lost a loved one?!

Despite working in a hospital for over a decade, he had never heard such a heartbreaking cry.

No wonder doctors were reluctant to come to the Emergency Department. It would be unbearable to deal with lives at stake every day.

”What are you waiting for? Are you coming in or not?” While Qiu Pingzhen was still dazed, Du Heng called out to him. By the time he looked up, Du Heng had already entered the emergency room through the tightly shut door.

”I’m coming.” Qiu Pingzhen didn’t dare to waste any more time and quickly followed Du Heng’s footsteps.

At this moment, the door to Zhou Yixian’s office was pulled open, and Du Heng had just arrived at the entrance. ”Director Zhou, how’s the patient?”

As Du Heng’s voice sounded, a trace of emotion finally crossed Zhou Yixian’s face. ”President Du, you’re here.”

Du Heng didn’t know the two people standing by the door, so after nodding a greeting, he looked at Zhou Yixian again. ”Director Zhou, how is the patient? I practically flew here.”

”The patient still has vital signs, but their condition is critical. We diagnosed them with coronary heart disease and heart failure, complicated by frequent ventricular premature beats and fibrillation. The ventricular fibrillation is occurring at a rate of 248 times per minute, and the patient is experiencing severe chest pain, profuse sweating, and serious difficulty breathing.”

Having worked with Du Heng several times before, Zhou Yixian was familiar with Du Heng’s routine. He went straight to the important points. ”The family members said that before being admitted to the hospital, the patient had frequent urination but no thirst, and experienced pain in his waist that felt as if it were breaking. Director Li from our Chinese Medicine Department also conducted a physical examination. The patient has a red tongue with little coating, and their pulse is... Director Li, what was the patient’s pulse?”

Director Li had been scrutinizing this young man, wondering how Du Heng possessed such guts and courage to use such potent prescriptions. When Zhou Yixian asked him, he immediately replied, ”Pecking Sparrow Pulse.”

Pecking Sparrow Pulse?

Du Heng furrowed his brow. Another patient with a terminal pulse.

”Take me to see the patient.”

”Alright.”

Zhou Yixian led the way, with Du Heng right behind him, followed by Director Zhang from the Department of Cardiology and Director Li from the Chinese Medicine Department. Not bothering to mention their busy departments, they all headed to the resuscitation bed nearby.

Qiu Pingzhen quietly swallowed. He was amazed at how influential Du Heng was here. The emergency director of a Grade 3A hospital hadn’t asked many questions and had just spilled everything to Du Heng as soon as he walked in.

How much trust did they have in Du Heng to elicit such a reaction?

Surprised, he followed their footsteps.

When Du Heng arrived at the patient’s side and saw his face, he frowned. ”So young?”

He had thought coronary heart disease would typically afflict an older person.

”The patient is 36 years old. He has been working overtime for half a month before the onset of the disease. His wife says his daily sleep time is only about 2-3 hours.”

Zhou Yixian now acted as an assistant, promptly answering Du Heng’s questions with the desired information.

Du Heng sighed. Working overtime for half a month, with only two hours of sleep... not dying suddenly from that was already a blessing from above.

Collecting himself, Du Heng immediately began his examination.

Indeed, the patient exhibited the Pecking Sparrow Pulse, but it wasn’t the only sign—there was also the sign of a leaky pulse.

Medical predecessors have said that for critically ill patients, the pulse at the inch opening alone is unreliable. What really needs to be examined are the lower three pulses—instep yang, Tai Xi, and LV-03. If they are weak but detectable, then the person can still be saved; otherwise, nothing will work.

These three pulses—instep yang, Tai Xi, and LV-03—govern the stomach qi and life force. The fact that these three pulses were still present was why Du Heng could save Li Qiuhua and the other two patients in Zhou Yixian’s emergency room.

For sudden emergencies caused by overwork, under normal circumstances, these three pulses would not vanish too quickly and should be salvageable.

So, when Du Heng pressed on the instep yang, Tai Xi, and LV-03 pulse points, he indeed felt faint pulses, though they were already barely perceptible.

In terms of ventricular fibrillation, if the patient experienced it another two or three times, he definitely wouldn’t be saved.

Now, speed is of the essence. There must be no delays.

”Director Zhou, do you still have the prescription we used last time?”

”Yes.”

”Keep the same dosage for the other ingredients, but add 15 grams each of ophiopogon and schisandra to save the Yin. Decoct with strong fire for fifteen minutes, extract... 300 milliliters will be enough.”

”Alright, I’ll arrange it right away.”

Zhou Yixian immediately turned and began calling people, arranging for someone to personally decoct the medicine and fetch it.

At this time, Director Li couldn’t help but ask, ”Du... It’s President Du, right? Hello, I am Li Aiguo from the Municipal First Hospital’s Chinese Medicine Department.”

”Hello, Director Li.”

”I have a question for you. Your original prescription is very mature and stable. Now that you’re adding ophiopogon and schisandra, will it change the prescription’s original effect of covering yang and rescuing of counterflow?”

Du Heng looked back at the patient in the bed and saw no significant changes, then turned back and said, ”The patient is sweating profusely, so we add schisandra to stop the sweating and nourish kidney Yin. At the same time, because it is a heart disease, we add ophiopogon to nourish heart Yin, achieving the effect of nourishing yin and producing fluids.

Both of these Chinese herbs can be used to brew tea for daily consumption, serving as a gentle way to maintain physical health. Therefore, their properties are quite mild and will not compete with the main ingredients in the original prescription.”

Director Li continued asking, ”Why 15 grams then? You know there are 200 grams of aconite in your prescription; won’t the efficacy of these two herbs be masked or altered by that amount?”

”Hmm... How should I explain this?” Du Heng hesitated for a moment. ”Director Li, you may have only paid attention to the 200 grams of aconite in the prescription and didn’t notice that the other herbs are all in the range of ten to thirty grams.”

Reminded by Du Heng, Director Li suddenly realized that the dosages for the other herbs in the prescription were indeed not high. Although some exceeded the Pharmacopoeia’s recommendations, the excess amounts were within an acceptable range, such as dried ginger at 30 grams, roasted licorice at 30 grams, and Korean ginseng at 20 grams.

Suddenly, Director Li laughed self-mockingly. He had been a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner his entire life, prescribing Chinese herbal medicine to patients for just as long. He never thought that he would be so distracted by the use of 200 grams of aconite today that he would ask such a foolish question.

Now that it had dawned on him, he wanted to see for himself whether Du Heng’s prescription would work.

Director Zhang from the Department of Cardiology also shared this thought.
