This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Touching the deformed bone fragments, Du Heng felt a chill crawl down his spine. How much force must it have taken to inflict such an injury?

Unconsciously, Du Heng glanced back at Liang Hehai’s two sons again.

Both sons were a bit younger than Du Heng. They were sturdy young men in their early twenties, but neither of them was good news.

The eldest son went to the city in his teens to get involved in the underworld society. He had done some shady jobs a few years prior before landing a job at the slaughterhouse. He was said to be somewhat mentally unstable now.

People said he beat his wife viciously. It was so bad that she disappeared without a trace before her confinement period ended and didn’t even return to her maternal family.

The second son wasn’t any better—he was an avid gambler. He supposedly won the money to marry his wife through gambling.

As if gambling wasn’t enough, like his brother, he was a ruthless person, not just towards his family but also towards himself.

It was said that because he continued to gamble instead of settling down after marrying, his wife returned to her maternal family. Consequently, he went to his father-in-law’s house with a watermelon knife. As soon as he arrived, without saying a word, he chopped off one of his own pinky fingers on the doorstep. CLANG!

After severing it, he placed the finger and the kitchen knife on his father-in-law’s tea table. Then, he sat silently on the sofa, staring fixedly at his father-in-law’s family.

Then, he took his wife back, not uttering a single word from beginning to end.

Did chopping off his finger lead to him reforming? That was impossible. During Gong Daoyang’s crackdown on gambling over the New Year, this younger son was still among those targeted.

It was even rumored that he had lost his own taxi to someone else in a bet.

There weren’t many people in the village to begin with, and most of the men had gone out to work. Now, faced with this family, which had many men who were also overly aggressive, no one dared to step forward.

Du Heng glanced back at the two brothers, then immediately turned to Liang Lihai’s wife. ”Sister-in-law, help Lihai up. My car is parked at the intersection. I’ll carry Lihai over.”

Liang Lihai’s wife stopped weeping and hurried to help.

But Du Heng’s actions irritated Liang Hehai’s two sons. They rushed forward and pushed Du Heng away. ”Du Heng, this has nothing to do with your family! Keep your nose out of it! Don’t think I won’t hit you just because you’ve made a name for yourself.

Today, Liang Lihai must pay up, or he’s not going anywhere.”

Du Heng’s eyebrows knitted together. He knew perfectly well that one should never try to confront brutes like these head-on. These two brothers were both unhinged and ruthless. Anyone who tried to act tough in front of such people was truly brainless.

”Liang Lin, if you want compensation, you should discuss it properly. Their family is right here; they can’t run away, can they? But you’ve broken the man’s leg, and it’s still bleeding. He needs to be sent to the hospital urgently.”

Du Heng intended to persuade them with reason and emotion. ”If he’s sent too late and ends up disabled, forget about getting compensation; you’ll have to pay them instead. You might even go to jail.”

The two brothers exchanged a glance. ”Fine, today we’ll give you, Du Heng, some face. But we’ll take twenty of their sheep as collateral. If he pays up, the sheep will be returned. If he doesn’t, the sheep will offset the debt.”

Hearing this, Liang Lihai, who had been groaning on the ground, stopped and shouted, ”You dare try to take even one!”

Du Heng quickly tried to reason with Liang Lihai. ”Brother Lihai, let’s get to the hospital first. As for the compensation and the sheep, if you can’t agree, there’s still the village council and the police station, isn’t there? The sheep won’t run off. Taking care of your leg is what’s important now.”

The two brothers ignored what Du Heng and the others said. They tossed aside the iron shovels and sledgehammers in their hands and walked directly towards the sheep pen by the entrance platform.

Liang Lihai flew into a panic, cursing at his wife. ”Are you blind? What are you still standing there for?”

Startled by her husband’s rebuke, Liang Lihai’s wife began to wail and ran towards the sheep pen. Liang Lihai added, ”Those two brutes! If our sheep are taken away by them, will they be left in good condition? Within three days, they’ll either be sold off or all slaughtered and eaten!”

As he spoke, he struggled to get up, dragging his broken leg towards the sheep pen, all the while cursing the two brothers.

Witnessing this scene, Wu Shengnan, who had come along, was completely dumbfounded. She couldn’t fathom how a collapsed pit could lead to someone’s leg being broken. And the man with the broken leg wasn’t thinking about going to the hospital; instead, he was trying to stop others from taking his sheep. How could he even stand up in this condition? What an incredible attachment he must have to his sheep! This kind of worldview and set of values was something Wu Shengnan simply couldn’t comprehend.

She was even more unaware that in the village, among the villagers, there were two things people would fight to the death for: money and face.

Liang Lihai had already lost face today; he absolutely could not afford to lose his money as well.

The Liang brothers were young men, after all. How could Liang Lihai’s wife stop them? Not only did she fail to stop them, but she was also pushed over by Liang Lin several times.

Having no other recourse, Liang Lihai’s wife threw herself on the ground, grabbed Liang Lin’s leg, and held on for dear life, wailing and crying out.

Du Heng wanted to help Liang Lihai up, but the man didn’t appreciate the gesture and shook off Du Heng’s hand.

At this moment, Liang Lihai seemed to feel no pain. He dragged his broken leg towards the sheep pen. Reaching the entrance, he collapsed with a THUD, sprawling there just like his wife, refusing to move an inch and blocking the way.
