Demon King: Hero, don’t run away!

Chapter 233: Chapter 233: The Fairy Between Bookshelves

Indeed, just as expected.

A smile appeared on Yang Yu’s face, for he had already guessed the direction of the conversation when Ying Luo was only halfway through her explanation.

According to his past experiences, the All Things Library was likely built to prevent certain things from being exposed from beneath the earth.

The presence of profound mysteries hidden within grand architectures was a common narrative used to seal away certain elements, which didn’t surprise Yang Yu.

Rather, the secretive nature of the library already suggested that there was something beneath it, hinting one of the answers to Yang Yu beforehand.

However, knowing was one thing—without interacting with the designated NPCs and confirming his suspicions, he wouldn’t be able to receive a task.

Persistence pays off. After listening to Ying Luo explain the whole story, Yang Yu’s system chimed, revealing a new task.

[Hidden Task: The Fairy Between the Shelves

The All Things Library is undeniably a treasure trove of human knowledge, the exact year of its establishment now unclear. The seemingly grand All Things Library could not have been built and operated solely by humans. To a large extent, the library owes its present stature to the power of fairies, forming a symbiotic relationship of mutual benefit with humans within the library.

Unfortunately, the realm of the fairies has always been shrouded in shadows.

Now, something lurking in the shadows threatens to devour the realm of the fairies. If not stopped in time, a great disaster will sweep across the entire All Things Library.

Task requirements: Help the fairies complete the sealing, and restore peace to the realm of the fairies.

Based on your performance, you could receive the following rewards: Experience 20000-100000, Gold Coin 10000-50000, Eleven Consecutive Draws (guaranteed at least one rare item above).

Extra reward: The Gift of the Fairy King. Conditions to achieve: ?????

Yang Yu meticulously scanned the task description from top to bottom, filtering for helpful clues.

Having some thoughts, Yang Yu directly sought confirmation from Ying Luo.

Ying Luo, having passed the membership examination through her own abilities, must have, like Shu Jing, hunted numerous pieces of knowledge and perused countless books.

She must also have heard something about fairies.

”Miss Ying Luo, do you know about this creature called ’fairy’?”

”I know of them, but why bring this up all of a sudden?”

”Nothing in particular, just casually asking. My intuition tells me, if we want to resolve this issue, we must seek help from the fairies. Do you know where the fairies are?”

”To speak of intuition...”

Just when Ying Luo had started to regard Yang Yu as somewhat reliable, his casual demeanor made her doubt his reliability again.

But, his intuition might not be wrong.

The world is just as mysterious.

Thus, Ying Luo and Yang Yu began discussing the Fairy Species.

Adult fairies are only as big as an adult’s fist, with thin insect-like wings on their backs, appearing very young with faces like those of children not yet stripped of their innocence. Fairies are a species highly attuned to magic power, often appearing in various stories as messengers of joyful tidings.

Although they possess a great affinity for magic, they seem to have little understanding of how to use it themselves. It is said that they rank low in strength compared to other species.

Whether this claim was true or false could not be verified.

In fact, over the past few centuries, no one had seen a fairy again, as if fairies had completely evaporated from the Mortal World and had become purely mythical creatures.

There was no doubt fairies had once existed in this world; many historical records had validated the existence of fairies.

But why had they been visible before, yet now they were nowhere to be seen?

There was still no definitive conclusion on this.

The commonly accepted belief was that fairies on this continent had been completely extinguished.

There were numerous theories about the cause of the fairies’ extinction.

Some believed that the fairy race had become the victims of the last battle between the Hero and the Demon King, while others thought that wars between Humans and various Sub-human Species had led to the extinction of the fairies.

From the existing taxonomies of Humans, classifying fairies as Sub-humans involved in ancient survival struggles between Humans and Sub-humans was also quite reasonable.

Even though fairies could use magic, compared to Humans they were too clumsy; facing Humans hundreds of times their number, it was exceedingly difficult for fairies to use their magic to defeat Humans. Conversely, Humans could easily destroy a fairy kingdom by banding together.

Thus, even if fairies were indeed wiped out by Humans, it wasn’t anything extraordinary.

At this point, Ying Luo lowered her gaze.

Perhaps there were exceptionally strong individuals among the fairies, but overall, their talents were not highly regarded. Some historical materials even greatly disparaged the fairy race, comparing them to butterflies: beautiful and cute, but otherwise not very useful.

After hearing Ying Luo’s statement about the fairies, Yang Yu couldn’t help feeling sympathetic.

The fairies of this world were incredibly weak.

However, this was still within the range Yang Yu could accept, after all, in many RPGs, fairies truly were as inconspicuous as their petite statures, fragile as insects, seemingly breakable with just a pinch.

It was written in black and white on the Task: Humans and fairies had jointly established the All Things Library and had co-operated it to this day, benefiting mutually and coexisting.

With some of the world’s top magicians, if the All Things Library wasn’t safe, then perhaps no place under heaven could be considered secure; it was logical for the weak fairies to seek sanctuary in the Library.

The All Things Library provided military assistance and helped conceal the fact of fairy existence to avoid unnecessary calamities. The fairies, on the other hand...

What did the fairies provide for Humans?

Suddenly, a spark flashed in Yang Yu’s mind.

The premise for coexistence was mutual benefit; since there was an input from the Human side, there obviously had to be some compensation collected from the fairies.

How was this compensation fulfilled?

If fairies could produce some rare minerals or make some special items, such mutual benefits could be achieved.

However, it seemed that the fairies and Humans were not using this method; it was written on the Task about joint operation, perhaps...

The name of the Task was ”Fairies Among the Bookshelves,” which also meant that the services provided by the Library now could very well be facilitated through fairies.

The card swipe machines of the Sky-reaching Library, the White Ball that could freely move through the floors, floated into Yang Yu’s view; he suddenly remembered a joke he had heard before.

In A San’s ticket checking machines, there was actually a ticket checker standing inside, manually checking tickets; they had achieved a high-tech facade in a very punk way.

Similar to this joke, behind the seemingly high-tech operations of the All Things Library, could there also be the diligent workings of fairies?
