High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2233: Chapter 454: Unexpected Events

”Doctor Du Zemu isn’t avoiding us, is he?”

”You have that feeling too?”

”He definitely knows something, otherwise... should we tell the school?”

”Tell the school what? Repeat our accusations against those Ravens, or our suspicions about Doctor Du Zemu? Besides suspicion, do we have any evidence? More importantly, the existence of those Ravens has always been questionable.”

After leaving the Abnormal Life Research Institute, the young male and female wizards engaged in a whispery yet intense debate. Zheng Qing was inclined to seek the school’s help, while Jiang Yu clearly expressed her distrust of the school.

Her caution was not without reason.

If, during the school Hunting Competition, the existence of the Ravens was still unknown and they hadn’t caused significant harm, it was excusable for the school not to track down a group of hidden wizards. However, after the Winter Hunting, those excuses no longer held.

A giant hand from the Deeps of Starry Sky carelessly groped the sensitive area of the First University, and the school didn’t react fiercely.

Furthermore, despite the reports from the Absolution and Fringe hunting teams mentioning the Ravens, the school did not issue a high-profile warrant or handle it in a straightforward way, reminiscent of the behavior of politicians after a scandal is exposed.

”It is indeed very suspicious...”

Zheng Qing recalled the school’s dilatory actions in this regard, muttering in agreement. But before he could finish, Jiang Yu suddenly grabbed his arm, pulling him forcefully into the shadow by the roadside.

Quickly, a group of witches in white robes chattered past the two, with the air faintly carrying the words ’Moonlit Ball’, ’next Friday’, ’Su Councilor’, vague yet distinct.

The warlock inadvertently glanced at the witch.

There was a breeze at the corner.

The breeze brushed through, a lock of black hair fell from her cheek, curling around her white slender neck, and draped over her other shoulder, making it look as if she wore a slender black collar.

He instinctively cleared his throat and looked away.

Jiang Yu seemed to come to her senses then, naturally letting go of the warlock’s arm, and casually explained: ”I was just worried that if someone from Alpha saw you walking with me, they’d curse me too.”

Zheng Qing tugged at the corner of his mouth, wanting to laugh, but felt that laughing now might get him hit.

”I am wearing my hat properly.”

He tugged at the hood covering most of his head, as if trying to convince the witch, or perhaps comforting himself: ”The Doctor confirmed it many times, and I have passed by Xin Fat Man several times wearing this hat, he never recognized me...”

”Are you sure they weren’t trying to get you beaten?” The witch tilted her head, giving him a sidelong glance with a subtle expression, as if finally confirming something.

Zheng Qing’s smile gradually faded.

”In any case,”

The witch slightly shook her head, returning to the previous topic: ”When you attend the secret meeting tonight, you might hint at the connection between the school and the Ravens to those devils, perhaps you’ll gain something unexpected...”

...

...

”In any case, when you attend the gathering tonight, maintain the demeanor of the Moonlight Nobles, and that should suffice. Arrogance is not in the words, but in the aura.”

In the rest area of the Karen Family at Alpha Fortress, Sir Friedman was giving his final instructions to his cousin: ”As I emphasized before, everyone at the gathering doesn’t know each other’s identity, everything you say will become your mask... and the mask on your face is the last one.”

Matthew Karen stood at the dark staircase entrance, recalling the final advice from his cousin in the rest room, raised his hand, adjusted the bat mask on his face, took a deep breath, and stepped into the swirling white mist.

At the end of the white mist, there was a bronze small door.

On the door, a green Ghost Face was rolling its eyes, scrutinizing the figure slowly descending the stairs.

”Good evening.”

Matthew greeted politely, yet coldly, as instructed by his cousin.

”It’s not good at all.” The green Ghost Face grumbled in its hoarse, unpleasant voice: ”Being woken up by you lot on a winter night, there’s nothing worse than this... By the way, kid, didn’t your predecessor tell you that you don’t need to wear a mask in front of me?”

The hand Matthew had just raised, ready to knock on the door, paused slightly in mid-air.

”Predecessor?”

He seemed to struggle to understand the word.

The Ghost Face on the door waggled its tongue, cackling for a moment, then spoke in its grating voice: ”Since you’re polite... your masks and I are one... Really cautious little brats, testing every time there’s a change.”

Matthew silently recalled his cousin’s advice, deep in thought; his hand, which lingered in mid-air, finally knocked on the bronze small door, thunk, thunk, thunk.

”Oh, right, a word of advice,” the Ghost Face licked the ring on the warlock’s hand, smacked its lips, reminding: ”After entering, don’t let them suspect you went to the wrong place... I must say, young people really know how to have fun!”

The small door opened silently.

Revealing a narrow passage and orange-yellow light.

In the light, there was a large oval conference table, with wilted bonsai on top, above which hung upside-down candles, their flames crackling quietly in the serene atmosphere.

Matthew took a few steps forward, entered the candlelight, and looked at the seven figures surrounding the conference table, falling silent at once — around the table were not the other mask-wearing figures he imagined, but a series of animals in diverse forms.

A black cat was likely the Sin Bearer his cousin mentioned.

A little white pig and a red fox, these he was prepared for; his cousin mentioned that Mammon and Beelzebub used Transformation in the last gathering.

But besides these three, at the table’s edge were a wolf resembling more of a dog, a sleek Black Mountain Goat, a Persian Cat, and a peacock resembling a parrot.

The young successor carefully recalled every detail his cousin told him, ensuring he was attending a wizard organization called the Seven Sins, not a Transformation learning group.

He silently exchanged gazes with the seven animals.

After a while.

The black cat cursed and tossed One Copper towards the red fox opposite: ”Merlin’s big underpants... you really guessed right!”

”Lucifer is the fakest of us all,” the articulation device under the red fox’s chin emitted a mechanical yet proud laugh: ”Expecting him to turn into a bat and appear in our meeting room is like expecting him to streak with a mask on...”

The peacock resembling a parrot issued a loud dry cough, stopping the fox’s nonsense.

”I think,” it lazily analyzed: ”The bigger reason Lucifer didn’t turn into a bat is due to the huge differences in vision, hearing, and vocalization between a bat and us.”
