High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2221: Chapter 442: Professor’s Other Goal

After the elective course, Gan Ning left the classroom, neither returning to the office nor going to the laboratory. Instead, he slowly wandered to the pedestrian street, bought a pack of Hundred Flavors Bullet Candy at Double Tang Note, tasting the strange and peculiar flavors as he strolled into the Wandering Bar.

On Wednesday evening, there were still few students in the Wandering Bar.

However, quite a number of young faculty members from the school gathered in groups of threes and twos, holding their respective wine glasses, whispering to each other, and scrutinizing every figure that entered the bar.

Among them, some were the school’s spies, some were simply here to drink, some were looking for a romantic encounter, and of course, most were there to gather tidbits of information and purchase some magic materials that are hard to acquire through regular channels. Regardless of their purpose, the Wandering Wizard could always provide services according to the amount of gold offered.

Gan Ning highly doubted that if a spy were willing to offer enough gold, the Wandering Wizard probably wouldn’t mind selling off every living thing in the bar except himself—including those fireflies hanging under the ceiling.

Therefore, he always remained cautious about the professor choosing this ’notorious’ Black Wizard as a partner. Whenever he came to the Wandering Wizard’s shop, he was always on high alert.

”One Golden Sea Monster, please.”

The young lecturer tapped the bar counter, and the tall Multi-arm Tribe bartender deftly grabbed a bottle of Sea Monster Langmu and a bottle of Amber Light from the shelf, then crushed a lemon, mixing them with clear Fire Dragon Egg Clear and pouring them into a cup filled with magic power.

White foam and blue base, with drops of faint gold amber light like a sea monster spinning and chasing in the glass, filled with a sense of urgency.

”Your guest is on the second floor.” The Multi-arm Tribe Attendant calmly pushed the glass towards the young Wizard and lightly asked, ”Would you like some honey?”

”No, thank you.”

Gan Ning didn’t like the taste of the drink to be too mellow, politely but firmly refused, casually tossed a piece of Hundred Flavors Bullet Candy into his mouth, then picked up his Golden Sea Monster from the bar and turned silently towards the second floor.

From the speaker flowers hanging from the ceiling, a leisurely and relaxed blues flowed out, as if mocking every Wizard who walked into this bar—

”...Lilith came in at evening,

holding a Silence Contract,

she wore a red dress,

flowing like blood,

hot like magma,

she held a time-filled hourglass,

then said to me, one day, you...”

Gan Ning didn’t hear what Lilith said in the end. As soon as he pushed open the door to the small private room, the hustle and noise of the Wandering Bar were instantly shut outside.

Inside the room, besides Professor Montreya, there were two other Wizards—one was the owner of this bar, and the other was a gray-haired Wizard who looked both old and young, giving an odd sense of contradiction.

When Gan Ning walked into the room, he happened to hear the last sentence spoken by the professor, ”...Believe me, no one wants to escalate things to this extent.”

This was undoubtedly the case.

Just like the professor initially stated, the final target of the Ravens was only one, to collect some blood containing the concept of the Philosopher’s Stone from Zhu Si.

However, because the target’s identity was too sensitive, to disturb the diviners’ subsequent tracing, the professor had to contact other collaborators, trying to increase the variables in the divination.

Every collaborator had their respective goals—the Witch Demon from the Land of Desolation wanted to conduct a combat appraisal of the laboratory’s modified subjects, members of the Dark Council wanted to probe the Rat Immortal’s situation, the Moon Council simply wanted to contact the Rat Immortal, and a few unidentified radicals shouted to burn a young man—leading to the interconnected plan unintentionally becoming larger and more chaotic.

Noticing the entering young man, the professor’s two guests simultaneously fell silent. The Wandering Wizard nodded slightly at Gan Ning, his figure gradually fading from view, while the gray-haired Wizard put on a hood and silently turned to leave.

In that fleeting moment of passing by, Gan Ning caught a strong scent of La Plata water, a commonly used neutralizer in Alchemy, promptly recalling a name.

”Glad you’re unharmed.”

Professor Montreya nodded slightly at his apprentice, directly getting to the point: ”Now, tell me the detailed situation of what happened at the scene that day...”

Like Zheng Qing, Gan Ning had only just completed the school’s health and safety assessment at noon today; but unlike the students, as a staff member of the First University, he did not need to sign the strictly binding Silence Contract, thus he could bring first-hand eyewitness accounts to the professor.

Hearing the professor’s request, the magical zoology lecturer fell silent for a while, not speaking immediately.

After pausing, he tentatively asked, ”Professor, if I recall correctly, you abandoned the idea of using Starry Sky power to harmonize Demon Bloodline a long time ago... Why release these failed experimental subjects this time?”

This was something he had never figured out.

If the aim was simply to disrupt the diviners, besides Starry Sky, there were many better choices; whether the Land of Desolation or the Dark Council, they were both good scapegoats.

But the Starry Sky?

Aside from madmen, no sane Wizard would associate with them.

Professor Montreya gave the young Wizard a surprised look, pondered stirring the wine in his hand, paused, and finally slowly spoke: ”No experiment is entirely meaningless, even a failed experiment has its value... The significance of the Starry Sky lies in its unfathomable nature, while my other objective is equally elusive.”

”Do you want to recruit Zheng Qing to join your laboratory?”

Gan Ning finally voiced a thought that had been lingering in his mind for a long time: ”I noticed the magic runes you left on the skin of that Ogre Experimental Body... Those runes once deeply fascinated Zheng Qing...”

During the confrontation with that monster, he clearly felt the young cost student beside him undergoing some sort of temptation. Professor Montreya seemed to put his path clearly before that bursary recipient.

”You’re still that sharp young man from the past.”

The professor nodded in appreciation, not denying: ”Indeed, whether from bloodline or strength, that child can bring great help to our cause... Of course, I’m not expecting a few pretty magic runes to win him over... But as I just said, this goal is very elusive, and I’m willing to add a tiny uncertainty to this huge uncertainty.”
