High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2222: Chapter 443: Nothing Is Impossible to Change

The young lecturer of magical zoology opened his mouth as if to say something, but abruptly closed it again, his expression turning much gloomier.

Whether using the power of the starry sky to harmonize demon bloodline, or attempting to pull his student into the raven, the methods seemed somewhat radical.

Professor Montreya glanced at him, seemingly having guessed the word in his mind: ”There is no point in rushing recklessly due to being overly radical.”

”But you said before, everything has meaning.” Gan Ning murmured, making the bag of candy in his hands crinkle.

The professor shook his head: ”Darkness is not as dangerous as you imagine... A subtle thought in our minds spreads out, gets lost in the sea of souls, seeing sights never before seen. This is not degradation... It is simply exhausting its exploratory instinct, then colliding with thoughts to spark new ideas. This is beneficial to our work.”

”However, the place that thought reaches and the things it creates might become the poison that kills us.” The young wizard raised his voice slightly, then quickly denounced himself: ”No, not might... definitely. It will definitely become poison! You yourself said, any thought that goes into darkness, upon returning, will completely corrupt the originally pure soul. This is a fact that cannot be changed no matter how much snake oil is smeared, or how much Lu Er De Holy Water is drunk.”

Snake oil is a universal remedy often used by old-school wizards; the Lu Er De Holy Water has miraculous effects on pollution from the starry sky.

Professor Montreya let out a peculiar laugh.

The young wizard looked at him in astonishment.

”There is no fact that cannot be changed, whether day or night, light or darkness,”

The professor collected his laughter, his demeanor gentle, his words implicitly meaningful, his tone carrying a hint of consolation with a touch of reminder: ”... nothing cannot be changed. Glory, status, wealth, all are but fleeting moments, only truth can bring eternity... This is my greatest harvest on the Black Prison Battlefield... Do not forget our goal, we are to walk the dead end that no one before us has walked through, so any means that might help us pave the way are worth unreserved effort, or attempt.”

As he spoke, he produced a string of peculiar sounds like bird calls or insect chirps, then his voice returned to normal:

”... This is a saying in ancient Atlantean priest language, meaning ’Where no one has arrived, that is where truth exists’... And exploration of the unknown always requires unknown help.”

The professor has said similar words more than once.

Each time it could very well relieve his anxiety, only today’s effect was not so pronounced.

The young lecturer managed a smile: ”... The General Knowledge Array of the school failed to translate your recent words, it is quite rare... I have never seen such a thing.”

”The General Knowledge Array will only translate grammatically complete and still living languages.”

The professor softly sighed: ”Languages like Atlantean priest language, which have only fragments remaining and are dead, won’t be used by anyone, naturally won’t be included.”

Chirp chirp!

A few short insect chirps interrupted the conversation indoors.

The two wizards simultaneously raised their heads, looking in the direction from which the chirping came. Under the ceiling, a firefly hung on a vine struggling and flapping its wings.

But it was too old, its wings already curled and degraded into two rope-like segments, even with all its might, it could not find the magic power to lift itself into flight.

Neither spoke, quietly watching this firefly before its death inflate its belly forcefully, emitting a trace of blood-stained orange-red light.

Then this light gradually dimmed, grew weaker, as if a setting sun sinking under the horizon, or a candle flame about to burn out all its wax.

When the last trace of light vanished, this firefly died.

Other fireflies swarmed in, clustered together, sending this dead firefly into the depths of the swarm—the lecturer of magical zoology knew that according to the ancient tradition of fireflies, the deceased would return to the bodies of companions through a secret ritual.

Then, a young firefly tottered up the vine, took the place of the deceased firefly, vibrating its wings, a pleasant sound coming from its proboscis, its belly slightly inflated, sprinkling a gentle bright light.

This light dispelled most of the gloom on the young wizard’s face.

”Hunters hired by the Wandering Bar are not good partners.”

Gan Ning finally shifted his focus back on the matters at hand, restarting the discussion that should have started long ago: ”They violated the contract, wanting more, I think this disregard for rules might be the main factor for their eventual loss of control...”

He detailed his observations and experiences during this mission.

Not mentioning anything about the Absolution Hunting Team, Zheng Qing, the strong charm gun of the young wizard, or the mysterious and powerful magic he could wield, only focusing on the primary objective of this mission.

”...The mission target was captured easily, without unforeseen interference—the school and her father did not appear—I consider all three possibilities plausible: one is that her father is at a critical point of advancement, unable to attend; another is that our preventive measures beforehand were effective, capable of disrupting a legendary existence to a certain extent; and yet another is that the mission launched ahead of schedule, beyond our plans, surely also beyond their expectations of interference...”

”Interesting.”

Professor Montreya displayed an unfathomable expression: ”Actually, that’s also what I am most concerned about. Even if the school’s few legends leave Buji Island, there’s ample capacity to send big wizards into the Silent Forest, yet they remained quiet all along...”

”Perhaps it’s because the entity descending that day was too dangerous?” Gan Ning thought of the gigantic hand that fell from the sky, murmuring with lingering fear.

”Perhaps.” The professor noncommittally bypassed the topic: ”What else? Is there anything else we need to pay attention to?”

The young wizard hesitated for a few seconds.

”The target person reverted to childhood form after losing blood... Such a change was unexpected.”

”Hmm, anything else?”

”Also the hired hunters, in addition to the loss of our provided Righteous Body, their physical bodies may also suffer pollution from the starry sky.”

”Hired hunters?”

The professor’s face showed a trace of indifference: ”There is a verse in the Gospel of Matthew—If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better to lose one part of your body than to have your whole body go into hell—and besides, they are not even our right or left hand, at most just a pair of gloves.”
