Chapter 391: Chapter 247: National Cardiac Surgery Rankings

”As for the Phase II surgery, to be frank, given Lou Musaang’s unique condition, the malformation is too complex. It’s extremely difficult to come up with a suitable surgical plan. To achieve a complete cure, we would need a brand-new aortic delivery system, which involves a whole new surgical concept.”

”I can’t come up with a concrete plan in the short term. However, the Jin Country cardiovascular surgery skills competition is coming up, and all the country’s top cardiac surgery teams and elite physicians will be competing.”

”I think we can present Lou Musaang’s case at the competition and let all of Jin Country’s top cardiac surgery experts discuss it.”

”Of course, that’s all contingent on today’s Phase I surgery going smoothly!”

After Director Ren finished speaking, the other directors were somewhat disappointed.

They hadn’t expected that even Director Ren couldn’t propose a viable solution.

”It seems this is our only option for now. Let’s just complete the Phase I surgery first and go from there.”

With the meeting at a standstill, the only course of action was to proceed with the Phase I surgery, led by Wu Ting’s team.

On the other end of the remote conference call.

Director Wen Hao of Fuwai Hospital and his junior colleague, Deputy Director Hu Zhipeng, had also reviewed Lou Musaang’s case. Afterward, they too were unable to devise an optimal plan.

The surgery was possible, but the risks were too high. For now, Lou Musaang’s condition was relatively stable, not yet warranting an open-chest procedure.

Director Wen’s idea aligned with Director Ren’s: they could present the case at this year’s national cardiac surgery skills competition and have the attending experts brainstorm a solution.

The top cardiac surgery departments were all paying close attention to this year’s skills competition. After all, the top twelve contestants from Jin Country would get to represent the Jin Country District in the international competition for the Asia-Pacific Region—an opportunity of immense prestige.

Fuwai’s chosen representative for this competition was Deputy Director Hu Zhipeng.

The deputy director had been preparing his own case for the competition. Today, he was accompanying Director Wen to observe the Haijin Port team’s surgery, hoping to find some inspiration by listening to the other experts’ ideas and methods.

The case he was preparing for the competition was: *Surgical Treatment of Severe Tricuspid Regurgitation After Left Heart Valve Replacement Under Peripheral Cardiopulmonary Bypass*.

To a certain extent, this condition and its surgical treatment were similar to Lou Musaang’s case, yet also distinctly different.

Thus, he had hoped to hear the experts’ views on Lou Musaang’s condition. Unfortunately, no one proposed any viable solutions.

Of the doctors attending this conference, Director Hu was only really interested in Director Ren and Deputy Director Li Xun from Saint An Hospital.

Deputy Director Li Xun was also a contestant in this competition and a strong contender for a top-three finish.

The case Director Li was researching and preparing for the competition was: *Biventricular Repair for Patients with Complete Atrioventricular Septal Defect and Double Outlet Right Ventricle*.

This too was the diagnosis and treatment of a highly complex and prestigious cardiac case.

Director Li had attended the conference today with a motive similar to Director Wen’s; he was hoping to hear about new techniques and ideas regarding atrioventricular septal defects.

Unfortunately, the meeting yielded nothing. All he got was a look at Lou Musaang’s perplexing case, for which no one could find an immediate solution.

The pre-operative discussion had reached a bottleneck.

The hosts—Director Shao, Director Shen, and Wu Ting—realized there was no point in continuing the meeting.

”Then we’ll proceed with the Phase I coronary stent placement as originally planned!”

[DING! You have completed a case discussion with cardiac surgery experts from Jin Province, Xianglin City, and Qinghe City. Congratulations, Host! You have acquired a skill from Deputy Director Li Xun: Pericardial Drainage Surgery (Purple). Used for the treatment of acute suppurative pericarditis, typically caused by Staphylococcus aureus, streptococcus, pneumococcus, meningococcus, etc...]

[You have acquired a skill from Director Shao: Pericardiocentesis (Purple). This procedure is often used to determine the nature of a pericardial effusion (exudate or transudate) and identify the pathogen. It also allows for the injection of medication into the pericardial sac. In cases of cardiac tamponade, fluid can be drained to relieve symptoms. It is indicated for patients with large pericardial effusions who present with signs of tamponade, where aspiration of the fluid relieves the compression.]

’Looking at these two new skills, Wu Ting felt a mix of joy and disappointment. For an emergency surgeon, they were two incredibly valuable, potentially lifesaving techniques. But for Lou Musaang’s condition, they were completely useless. There are just so many different types of cardiac surgeries.’

As the other experts waited to observe, Wu Ting, Director Shao, and their team entered the operating room.

Today’s demonstration was Lou Musaang’s Phase I procedure: coronary artery stent placement.

Wu Ting was the lead surgeon, assisted by Director Shao and Director Shen.

Wu Ting had examined Lou Musaang several times before the operation. In the days leading up to the surgery, the patient had become noticeably more emaciated.

Her ribs were starkly visible. Her skin was pale and unnaturally taut, creating a desolate kind of beauty.

Wu Ting had already spoken with Lou Musaang in detail. For two days prior to the surgery, the patient had been taking aspirin, ticlopidine, nitrates, and calcium antagonists, primarily to prevent acute post-operative thrombosis.

The procedure itself was relatively routine: a vascular stent would be inserted into the diseased section of the aorta to support the vessel wall, ensuring that blood could flow freely through the lumen.
