Chapter 369: Chapter 240: Investing and Teaching at Fan City University Medical College (3)

Ever since the trouble with his wife, Director Duan’s entire mindset had undergone a massive shift.

After divorcing his wife, he began to reconsider his career. He felt that if he stayed on as the Chief of the Emergency Department at Yu State Hospital, that was all he would ever be.

His career had hit a ceiling at Yu State Hospital; a promotion to deputy dean was out of the question. At his age, transferring to a higher-level hospital wasn’t realistic, and no such opportunities existed anyway.

Besides, he couldn’t swallow his pride and go to a higher-level hospital to compete with a bunch of juniors at his age.

Then, by a stroke of luck, his cousin—a deputy dean at Fan City University Medical College—presented him with an opportunity.

Some time ago, Professor Long Jie, the former director in charge of the Medical Experiment Center at Fan City Medical College, had taken early retirement for health reasons.

Consequently, the entire Medical Experiment Center underwent a personnel reshuffle.

As the senior Chief of the Emergency Department at Yu State Hospital, Duan Xingping was recommended by Dean Duan and was ultimately hired as a high-level expert.

Currently, Director Duan serves as the Deputy Director of the Medical Experiment Center, overseeing its second virtual laboratory, the Situational Pre-hospital Emergency Care Training Lab.

As a frontline chief physician from the Yu State Hospital emergency department and still in the prime of his life, Duan Xingping was both well-suited and highly competent to be in charge of the pre-hospital emergency care training lab.

Of course, having gone through a divorce and a career change, Director Duan was not content with being a mere deputy director of the Medical Experiment Center.

The organizational chart of Fan City University Medical College’s academic divisions included the Department of Basic Medicine, the Department of Clinical Medicine, the Department of Pharmacy, the Department of Nursing, and the Medical Experiment Center.

The Medical Experiment Center currently had four laboratories: the Anatomy Lab, the Health Assessment Lab, the Situational Pre-hospital Emergency Care Training Lab, and the Comprehensive Virtual Training Lab for Morphology, Skills, Nursing, and Rehabilitation.

And Director Duan was currently responsible for the Situational Pre-hospital Emergency Care Training Lab.

These four labs supported the virtual simulation and practical training instruction for over 400 students at Fan City Medical College in courses like Systematic Anatomy, Health Assessment, Basic Nursing, and Critical Care Nursing.

The entire Medical Experiment Center handled experimental, practical, and research-based teaching for various majors. The road ahead was long, and the responsibility was immense.

After taking the helm, Director Duan was eager to produce some notable achievements.

As a veteran emergency department chief, Director Duan had a systematic and profound understanding of pre-hospital emergency care. He planned to optimize the lab and its related courses, then submit a proposal to the college leadership to make his own contribution.

Director Duan carefully analyzed the existing emergency medicine-related courses at Fan City University Medical College:

Preliminary Rescue, Resuscitation, Critical Care Medicine, Traumatology, Acute Poisoning, Disaster Medicine, and Medical Service Systems, among others.

In addition to being in charge of the Situational Pre-hospital Emergency Care Training Lab, Director Duan also served as an instructor for related courses, such as Preliminary Rescue and Acute Poisoning.

The emergency medicine curriculum at Fan City University Medical College was a broad category and wasn’t taught by a fixed faculty.

After all, emergency medicine covered so much ground that it was impossible for any single instructor to be an expert in everything.

Furthermore, the Medical College didn’t want its instructors to be purely theoretical. Thus, for various specializations within the emergency medicine curriculum, they invited and hired different frontline clinicians for adjunct teaching positions.

With his qualifications and experience, Director Duan was undoubtedly competent enough to teach several of these modules.

However, as Director Duan mulled it over, he realized that while he could certainly teach, his approach would be conventional and unremarkable.

Moreover, his goal was a higher, administrative position, not to be a mere instructor.

So, his mind started churning. He decided to leverage his connections to invite and recommend relevant frontline clinicians for adjunct teaching collaborations.

As long as he could recruit some impressive instructors and achieve tangible teaching results, he would naturally receive credit for his good judgment and for making the recommendation.

Once he had some accomplishments to his name, his cousin, the deputy dean, would have a justification for promoting him.

In the end, Director Duan decided to place his bet on the field of pre-hospital emergency care, tying his efforts to the training lab he was responsible for.

’So, what kind of expert should I invite to be an adjunct lecturer?’

Director Duan quickly thought of an old acquaintance, an elite physician from the younger generation: Wu Ting!

Director Duan and Wu Ting communicated often, and the director deeply admired Wu Ting’s character and talent.

Moreover, considering Wu Ting’s age, his achievements, his future potential, his handsome looks, and his top-tier charisma and appeal...

Director Duan was certain that if Wu Ting agreed to come, he would become a star lecturer at Fan City University Medical College—the most popular teacher of the new generation!

Director Duan quickly laid all his cards on the table, explaining his idea to Wu Ting, as well as his plan to prepare courses for the Situational Pre-hospital Emergency Care Training Lab and invite adjunct lecturers.

Wu Ting hadn’t expected to receive such a message from Director Duan.

’Talk about perfect timing. It’s like someone handing you a pillow right when you’re about to fall asleep.’

Wu Ting didn’t beat around the bush; he immediately agreed to the collaboration with Director Duan.

”Director Duan, I’m very interested in teaching some of the emergency medicine course modules at the Medical Experiment Center of Fan City University Medical College.”

”And to be frank, I’ve recently been making my own plans to collaborate with Fan City University Medical College.”

”I see that the Medical Experiment Center where you work also has an Anatomy Lab; we could collaborate on that, too.”

”And look, your Medical College’s academic divisions have a Department of Pharmacy, yet it lacks a proper practical training base, not to mention a research base.”

”So, how about we find some time to talk? I have a plan.”

After calling Director Duan, Wu Ting sent over his ”Investment Plan for the Medical College Animal Experiment Base Construction Project.”

”Take a look, Director Duan. I believe my animal experiment base can be integrated with the long-term plans for your Medical Experiment Center.”

”For instance, we could relocate your Anatomy Lab to my base. My facility would provide various lab animals free of charge, along with the relevant equipment and instruments.”

”Then, since I also own Wu’s Pharmaceutical Company, I could partner with your Medical Experiment Center to jointly build a pharmaceutical R&D lab. This would strengthen the cooperation between the university and private enterprise, a true industry-academia-research collaboration...”

Wu Ting gave Director Duan the broad strokes of his plan.

Director Duan was completely floored by the sheer scale of Wu Ting’s vision.

But after a moment of thought, that shock turned into a wave of sheer ecstasy!

’I can’t believe it. I just wanted to invite him to give a few lectures, and he’s bringing an animal experiment base and a pharmaceutical R&D lab with him!’

Suppressing his excitement, Director Duan said:

”Director Wu, this plan is brilliant! Let me be frank with you as well. My cousin is one of the deputy deans at Fan City University Medical College.”

”I’m currently the Deputy Director of the Medical Experiment Center, and my goal is to get promoted to Director and fill the position the former director left behind when she retired.”

”Currently, my direct competitor is a protégé of the former director. That former director, Director Long, still has a lot of pull within the college, and with her support, I’m facing some resistance. After all, I’m the new guy.”

”That competitor will definitely find excuses to obstruct my recommendation of you and your investment project. So, we need to strategize carefully.”
