Chapter 379: Chapter 243: Enthusiastic Response, a Brilliant Track Record Revealed

Director Cui himself was getting on in years and no longer had the stamina of a younger man.

As the lecture droned on, many of the students began to zone out, while many others started looking at their phones.

Soon, Director Cui’s lecture had settled into the familiar atmosphere of a typical university theory course: somewhat dull, a little long-winded, and rather uninspired.

He lectured on and on, eventually reaching the topic of emergency treatment for massive hemorrhaging from a traumatic liver rupture.

Director Cui brought up a case study of a patient who had been transferred years ago from a lower-level hospital in Xiaoshan.

In that case, the local hospital had been poorly equipped and the doctors’ abilities were inconsistent. The attending physicians at the time failed to act decisively. They started the emergency procedure but couldn’t follow through properly. Only then did they think of transferring the patient to a higher-level hospital. In the end, the patient died when rescue attempts during transport proved futile.

Director Cui used this case to impress upon the students the gravity and urgency of emergency medicine. More importantly, he wanted to instill in them the principle of being cautious and not overextending their abilities.

”When you all enter the workforce and encounter a situation like this, you must remember: as medical professionals, we cannot rush in headfirst, fueled by passion alone. We need to conduct a thorough assessment and make a prudent choice. When your own abilities or your facility’s supporting resources are insufficient, you must act decisively and contact a higher-level hospital for help immediately!”

”There’s no shame in seeking help promptly. In fact, doing so gives the patient the greatest chance of survival. Lower-level hospitals must trust higher-level hospitals...”

By citing this case, Director Cui was also elevating his own status while highlighting the prestige and capabilities of provincial-level institutions like the Jin Province Tumor Hospital.

Given the caliber of the students from Fan City University Medical College, most would likely end up working in local hospitals.

Therefore, he had to start drilling it into them now, while they were still students—these doctors destined for mediocrity—that they must always be cautious, trust the higher-level hospitals, and trust experts like him.

At this point, Director Cui deliberately displayed his personal contact QR code on the screen.

”This is my personal account. Feel free to add me. In the future, once you start working, you can consult me or ask for my help if you run into any problems!”

Director Cui’s sense of superiority, and the disdain for local hospitals woven into his words, made the young students slightly uncomfortable.

’It might be a fact that local hospitals can’t compare to provincial ones, but as a lecturer, shouldn’t he be working to elevate the medical standards and skills of doctors in those very hospitals?’

’Instead of just telling them to transfer patients and have local doctors just give up?’

As it happened, Wu Ting had also discussed cases of traumatic hemorrhage that Monday.

Back then, Wu Ting had described a technique specifically designed for local hospitals: creating a balloon tamponade from a condom to achieve hemostasis in cases of massive hemorrhage from a liver rupture.

Having attended Wu Ting’s lecture, the students remembered his perspective on local hospitals: that their medical standards not only could be improved, but absolutely must be improved.

This was a responsibility that fell not only to the local hospitals but also to the higher-level ones, and indeed, to every single doctor.

Wu Ting didn’t just say so; he acted on it.

He was putting his philosophy into practice step by step: improving Surgical Techniques (like ancillary laparoscopic methods that lowered the learning curve for doctors), optimizing instruments (enabling doctors in local hospitals to master difficult procedures), and compiling guidelines (to influence an entire field, comprehensively elevating the diagnostic and treatment capabilities for specific diseases and benefiting hospitals at every level).

Wu Ting’s words, actions, and encouragement made the students feel far more motivated and inspired. It was heartwarming!

One of the students couldn’t take it anymore. She shot her hand up to voice her opinion:

”Director Cui, I believe your viewpoint is mistaken. Yes, local hospitals don’t have the same standards or equipment as higher-level ones. However, our first reaction shouldn’t be to simply accept this state of affairs and reflexively transfer patients to a superior hospital.”

”I believe that doctors at both local and higher-level hospitals should be striving to design and improve surgical protocols and instruments, to reduce the difficulty of these procedures, and to help local hospitals solve these kinds of medical problems. That’s how we can benefit more patients.”

”For example, for the patient in this case, it was possible to attempt a simplified approach. Hemostasis for the massive hemorrhage from the liver rupture could have been achieved right there in the local hospital, using simple materials and a simplified Surgical Technique.”

Hearing the student’s response, Director Cui was somewhat surprised. Then, in a grave and earnest tone, he said:

”Your point of view is admirable, very positive and optimistic. I agree with your line of thinking, but there are very real problems that exist between theory and practice. For instance, in the case I just described, I don’t believe it was possible to complete the emergency procedure at that local hospital with simple maneuvers and equipment.”

”In fact, the doctors at the local hospital during that very incident held the same idea as you. They wanted to ’give it a try,’ and we all saw how that turned out.”

”Even today, from my perspective, with all my experience and knowledge, there was simply no other solution for that patient unless they were transferred to a superior hospital at the earliest possible moment.”

Director Cui, quite confident in his own expertise, moved to snuff out the student’s line of thought. He then resumed his lecture for a few more moments.

”Director Cui, I’ve seen a method that can treat this condition.”

The young woman persisted, refusing to back down.

Director Cui chuckled. ”Alright, then. You tell me. What would you do? Enlighten me.”

The female student had listened intently to Wu Ting’s class on Monday, and his method of creating a balloon tamponade from a condom had left a deep impression on her.
