Chapter 363: Chapter 238: Prestige! Upgrading from a General to a Specialist Consultation

With his promotion from regular physician to specialist, Wu Ting would have more opportunities to consult on difficult and complex cases alongside experts from other departments.

Of course, his compensation also increased significantly.

The leadership at City First Hospital also began to build a complete team around Wu Ting.

First, for the Hepatic Tumor Surgery department, in addition to its leading physicians Wu Ting and Zhang Heng, a new group of high-level talent was recruited, and numerous intern positions were also created.

This would allow Hepatic Tumor Surgery to quickly establish a talent development pipeline.

In return for the support from City First Hospital’s leadership and his colleagues, Wu Ting pooled the prize money he had accumulated from his various research papers and used it to establish a research fund at the hospital.

The fund would go on to support and finance the research projects of physicians in every department at City First Hospital.

The fund’s name was also very straightforward: the Wu Ting Research Fund!

Initial funding: two million!

Wu Ting would be in charge of managing the entire fund.

The fund’s first grant was awarded to Director Zhang Heng’s project: ”Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization (TACE) Combined with Fengmu Tiada Antiviral Therapy.”

The second project to be approved was from Resident Physician Cheng Feng, a workhorse of a topic titled: ”Common Statistical Problems in Medical Research Papers, with Improvement Measures and the Application of Photographic Techniques.”

「Another week passed.」

With the support of the hospital leadership and various departments, the first group of new recruits for Hepatic Tumor Surgery arrived to begin their training.

As interns, their main duty was to work under the guidance of the department head.

Under the department head’s supervision, they would participate in patient examinations, diagnoses, and treatments, as well as write up medical orders.

They were also required to join departmental rounds and promptly report any diagnostic or treatment difficulties, along with any changes in patients’ conditions, to their supervising physicians.

To ensure the high-quality development of Wu Ting’s Hepatic Tumor Surgery department, the caliber of this new batch of interns was exceptionally high.

Nine interns were accepted in total. The minimum qualification was a master’s degree from a top-tier university. Among them were two top master’s students from Jinggang University Affiliated First Hospital.

Today was Wu Ting’s scheduled specialist clinic for the week.

According to the latest schedule, Wu Ting held his clinic on Monday and Wednesday mornings.

The specialist clinic for Hepatic Tumor Surgery was split: half the time, it was staffed by rotating experts from Xianglin City and Xiao City, and the other half was covered by the hospital’s sole in-house specialist, Wu Ting.

The current team structure now included, in addition to Zhang Heng, a newly hired associate chief physician, two attending physicians, and two residents. The remaining members were the nine interns.

The two attending physicians each supervised three interns, and the associate chief physician also supervised three.

As the Chief Physician of the entire Hepatic Tumor Surgery department, Zhang Heng didn’t personally supervise any of the interns.

The two residents were currently assigned to full-time duty in the patient wards.

At present, the Hepatic Tumor Surgery specialist clinic was fully booked every week. To see more patients, Wu Ting intentionally added ten extra appointment slots each day, staying until he had seen every last one.

So, things were quite hectic. To ease Wu Ting’s workload, the two attending physicians and the associate chief physician perceptively arranged for one of their interns each to assist him during his clinic hours. Their duties would include maintaining order, running errands, and writing prescriptions.

Yang Xiao and Yu Wanchao were two of these three interns, and they were also Wu Ting’s former classmates from Jinggang University Medical School Graduate School.

To be precise, while they all graduated in the same year, Yang Xiao and Yu Wanchao were technically his seniors. Wu Ting had graduated early, having enrolled later than they did.

As graduates of Jinggang University Medical School Graduate School, Yang Xiao and Yu Wanchao were well acquainted with their famous classmate, Wu Ting, and held him in high regard.

Now that they were assigned to intern under him, they were both excited and filled with anticipation.

They were eager to see for themselves how someone as young as Director Wu had managed to become the hospital’s sole specialist for the Hepatic Tumor Surgery clinic.

The department’s unique power structure also seemed unbelievable to them.

The department’s only Chief Physician, Zhang Heng, wasn’t the one in charge; instead, he willingly assisted Director Wu.

And Deputy Director Wu Ting, who wasn’t even a full director, had been exceptionally granted the authority to run the specialist clinic and was, for all intents and purposes, the department’s head and leader!

The third intern, a graduate from Yacheng Hospital named Li Jun, was completely unaware of this backstory.

He viewed Wu Ting with a critical eye, though he was careful to maintain a perfectly polite and respectful exterior.

As a newcomer, he didn’t dare question Wu Ting to his face or show any hint of defiance.

Still, seeing Wu Ting for the first time was a shock. Wu Ting looked—and was—even younger than him.

He’d also learned that Wu Ting had only just graduated this year.

It was only after reading Wu Ting’s almost unbelievably impressive resume that he grudgingly accepted his position as a deputy director.

Li Jun was also looking forward to attending Wu Ting’s specialist clinic today.

’A young man being brilliant at research—that’s mainly about talent and theory, which is understandable. But clinical experience... isn’t that something that has to be built up through countless real-world cases?’

As the three interns followed Wu Ting to the specialist clinic for the first time, their anticipation grew.

When they arrived at the clinic, the three of them witnessed for the first time just how popular Director Wu’s specialist clinic was.

Before a single patient number had been called, the entire waiting room was already packed.

Once he arrived, Wu Ting began assigning tasks to the three interns.

The Wu Ting of today was a seasoned veteran. In terms of mindset, ability, and experience, he already possessed the calm demeanor of a seasoned expert.

Looking at the three interns, who were his own age, Wu Ting felt no awkwardness at all as he put them to work like grunts.

’After all, he was used to directing people like Deputy Director Qin Donglai, Director Zhang Heng, and Director Cai Qi, not to mention three highly-accomplished female PhDs. Three measly interns? Wu Ting couldn’t care less what they thought of him or what their attitudes were. All he required was their hard work, diligence, and cooperation.’

Wu Ting now had enough authority and power to simply remove them if they didn’t meet his standards.

Besides, participating in these diagnoses with him was a fantastic opportunity for them.

”Yang Xiao, you’re responsible for calling patient numbers and assisting me with examinations and diagnoses.”

”Yu Wanchao, you’re in charge of maintaining order and bringing patients in when it’s their turn.”

”Li Jun, for now, you can wait on the side. You’ll rotate with Yang Xiao and Yu Wanchao later. Depending on how we do this morning, we might take on a few extra patients.”

”After the clinic ends today, you’ll have lunch and then follow me to the wards for rounds. You three will take turns writing up patient charts and medical orders...”

Without wasting another word, Wu Ting gave his brisk instructions and then called the first patient’s number.

Seeing Wu Ting’s cool, direct manner, Yang Xiao and Yu Wanchao didn’t think he was being arrogant. They knew about his brilliant track record and had even heard about his famous debate with Professor Lin Ning.

This was just the standard operating procedure for a senior doctor. It was the same for all of them. It was only Wu Ting’s youth that might make someone unfamiliar with the situation think he was being standoffish.

’Li Jun felt exactly that. After all, he was a top graduate from Xiangya. In his experience, only the old, senior directors were this stern. Shouldn’t a young doctor be a bit more approachable and energetic?’

Li Jun felt a prickle of annoyance at Wu Ting’s attitude.

He didn’t dare show it, however, and just waited obediently on the side for his turn.
