Chapter 382: Chapter 244: Campus Emergency! Perinatal Spontaneous Liver Rupture (2)

For now, all they could do was perform CPR before the ambulance arrived.

However, just as he was about to begin first aid, Dr. Xun realized something was wrong.

”This is bad. Teacher Fu is in cardiac arrest. We need to start artificial ventilation...”

However, Dr. Xun was an OB/GYN, after all, and he lacked this kind of emergency medical knowledge.

Guan Bao and Duan Xingping were both nearby. At a time like this, Duan Xingping didn’t dare to hesitate.

”Get a gurney from the school clinic immediately! We’ll perform CPR and provide emergency care concurrently. We have to stabilize Teacher Fu before the ambulance arrives. If the situation becomes too critical, our only choice is to perform emergency surgery at the school clinic...”

For now, their priority was CPR. They could diagnose the cause of her bleeding and shock later.

In her condition, they didn’t dare move her directly, which was why they needed a gurney from the school clinic.

Director Duan was the director of an emergency department, after all; his thought process was clear and methodical.

At this moment, Guan Bao also set aside their rivalry. He was more familiar with the school and its staff.

”Okay, I’ll contact the school clinic now and have them rush over. Director Duan, what other equipment do you need?”

”An intubation kit, the instruments and drugs to establish an artificial airway... We’ll also need an IV drip with Lactated Ringer’s solution...”

The classroom was full of medical students, so they had some fundamental training. Director Duan pointed to the nearest one.

”You, help me with the compression count and monitor her heart rate.”

The student was very worried about Teacher Fu, a teacher they saw every day, and immediately began to help with the count.

Guan Bao immediately contacted the school clinic, and staff and equipment were rushed over at top speed.

Guan Bao suddenly remembered that Director Cui from the Jin Province Tumor Hospital was teaching in the classroom next door. He immediately sent a student to get Director Cui to come help Director Duan with the resuscitation.

Before long, the equipment, supplies, and staff from the school clinic had arrived. To be ready for any contingency, the school doctor had brought an entire emergency kit filled with various instruments, including a laryngoscope, a stethoscope, and other items.

Director Cui rushed over as well.

Director Cui’s expression grew grave upon seeing Teacher Fu’s condition. Director Duan, in the middle of the resuscitation, had no time to spare for formalities regarding Director Cui’s status. He snatched the instruments from the school doctor’s hands and began the endotracheal intubation.

However, he immediately ran into a complication. Teacher Fu’s airway was filled with a large amount of secretions, and because of the pregnancy, her positioning was also problematic.

The intubation proved extremely difficult. Even with his extensive experience, Director Duan couldn’t visualize the glottis on his first attempt.

Sweat beaded on Director Duan’s forehead.

Guan Bao grew anxious as he watched. He no longer cared about offending Director Duan; saving a life was what mattered most, and the most capable person for the job should be the one to do it.

”Director Cui, do you have any ideas?”

Director Cui watched, understanding the situation perfectly: the patient’s airway was full of secretions, making intubation incredibly difficult.

Although he was experienced, he was older, and his hand strength and dexterity couldn’t compare to Director Duan’s, who was in his prime.

Furthermore, he had grown more cautious with age. After a moment’s thought, he concluded that he couldn’t do any better himself and decided to remain on the sidelines.

”The patient’s condition is poor. For one, her airway has too many secretions, which makes intubation difficult. Also, because she’s pregnant and has unexplained bleeding, we don’t dare adjust her position. This means we can’t move her head, chin, or upper body, making it even harder to control the position of the trachea and larynx. We’re not getting adequate exposure of the glottis...”

Director Cui couldn’t think of a better way either and could only hope that Director Duan would succeed after a few more tries.

But in a situation like this, the longer they delayed, the worse her chances of recovery would be.

Just as Director Cui was unwilling to shoulder the responsibility—not wanting to tarnish his reputation so late in his career—and Director Duan was at his wit’s end, Liao Rongrong, who had followed Director Cui, looked at Teacher Fu’s condition. Suddenly, her mind flashed back to something Wu Ting had specifically covered in his CPR lecture.

Liao Rongrong stepped forward, emerging from the surrounding crowd of anxious, silently praying students.

”Director Duan, Director Guan, I have an idea, though I’m not sure if it will work.”

”On Monday, during his CPR lecture, Director Wu mentioned a special technique for handling a situation exactly like Teacher Fu’s.”

”He said that when it’s difficult to expose the glottis, there are copious secretions, and the patient’s position can’t be easily adjusted due to other complications, you can try using a video laryngoscope for the tracheal intubation!”

Liao Rongrong’s words were a revelation!

Director Duan looked toward the school doctor, who hurriedly opened the emergency kit. Inside, he had indeed packed a laryngoscope and a stethoscope.

Director Cui’s eyes lit up as he heard the suggestion, and he added his praise.

”That’s an excellent method. Director Duan, intubating with a video laryngoscope can indeed overcome these difficulties.”

Filled with new confidence, Director Cui was spurred to action, taking the laryngoscope and stethoscope directly from the school doctor.

After all, Director Cui was the head of the emergency department at a top hospital in Jin Province; his fundamental skills and breadth of experience were superior to Director Duan’s.

Armed with the insight from Wu Ting’s clever idea, he began the procedure.

After selecting the appropriate tube, he held the video laryngoscope in his left hand and inserted it through the center of the mouth. With the aid of the video laryngoscope, he clearly exposed the uvula and epiglottis. He then positioned the tip of the blade beneath the epiglottis and lifted slightly. Sure enough, the glottis was revealed.
