The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

”A thousand miles of farewell, there must be a parting.”

”You’ve worked hard all the way.”

”Mountains remain, rivers flow, may our paths cross again someday.”

Director Hou nodded, ”If fate allows, we shall meet again.”

After a brief exchange, Director Hou and Jiang An bid farewell, shaking hands with Political Commissioner Li and Mr. Qin before boarding the special vehicle.

At 10 a.m. sharp, a comprehensive report from the Qinzhou City Public Security Bureau was delivered punctually to the provincial public security office.

The office director initially didn’t pay much attention when he received the file, but as he read through it, his expression gradually turned grave, and his brow furrowed ever more tightly.

The nature and audacity of the crime detailed in the report were unlike anything he had witnessed in his career spanning over twenty years.

More astoundingly, the major case, from report to resolution, was cracked in less than seventy-two hours, a feat in speed and method that was a true miracle within the policing world.

”This... this is simply unbelievable...”

The director muttered to himself, then suddenly stood up, grabbed the report, and dashed to the General Director’s office.

The sound of his hurried footsteps echoed in the corridor, drawing curious glances from colleagues along the way.

”Knock, knock, knock!” The knocking was particularly urgent.

”Come in,” General Director Yang’s steady voice echoed from within.

The director pushed the door open and urgently said, ”General Director Yang, there’s an emergency situation that requires immediate reporting!”

”Go ahead.”

General Director Yang lifted his gaze from a document, eyes sharp as a blade.

”I’ve just received an urgent fax from the Qinzhou City Public Security Bureau about a major hit-and-run accident. But what’s involved is a crime syndicate with more than a dozen members...”

”A dozen members?”

General Director Yang swiftly put down the pen in his hand, leaning slightly forward, ”What exactly happened? Has the case been solved?”

”It’s been thoroughly cracked, and...” The director paused, a hint of pride in his voice, ”It’s Director Hou’s special investigation team that handled it.”

”Director Hou?” A flicker of surprise crossed General Director Yang’s eyes, soon replaced by keen interest, ”Quick, let me take a closer look at that report.”

Ten minutes later, when he sifted through to the closing report, his movements suddenly halted, as if frozen by an unseen force at that moment.

”From an ordinary traffic accident... unravel a syndicate trafficking women and children?”

He murmured to himself, his pen gently resting on the tabletop. This seemingly routine hit-and-run case had, in mere days, unveiled a crime network shocking to the entire nation, unprecedented in the history of the criminal investigation squad.

He slowly set down the closing report and raised a hand to rub his throbbing temples.

In his mind, every key junction of this case unfolded.

Each detail was meticulously pieced together by the special task force to form a coherent thread.

As the complete crime network chart revealed itself in his mind, even this battle-hardened veteran detective felt a wave of astonishment.

”Even if starting from a homicide, uncovering such a criminal group would be deemed miraculous, let alone from a traffic accident...”

He murmured. As a key player on the frontline of criminal investigation for over twenty years, he knew all too well, such breakthroughs demanded not only keen professional intuition but also rare fortuitous circumstances.

Each precise judgment, every opportune moment seemed like fate’s carefully orchestrated coincidence.

After a moment’s contemplation, he quickly picked up the phone and dialed Director Hou’s number.

At the moment the call connected, he tried to keep his voice calm, ”Director Hou, are you back yet?”

”General Director Yang, we’re on our way back, expected to arrive at the office in an hour.”

”Good. Your front-line achievement is outstanding!”

Over the phone, Director Hou was evidently surprised, then turned to look at Jiang An beside him, his face also showing disbelief.

Has it only been such a short time, and General Director Yang already knows?

Director Hou turned back to speak into the phone, ”General Director Yang, it’s primarily thanks to your past guidance, we always remember our mission and duty.”

”Well done!” General Director Yang’s voice was full of vigor, ”The impact of this case far exceeds expectations.”

”When you return, I’ll report to the provincial office immediately.”

”Given the significance of this case, nominating each of you for a second-class merit award is absolutely justified.”

He paused, then continued, ”Also, a thank-you letter from Qinzhou City Public Security Bureau has been sent to the provincial office.”

”The letter is sincerely written, overflowing with gratitude.”

”So quickly?” Director Hou said in surprise over the phone, ”We left Qinzhou less than three hours ago.”

”Local colleagues are eager to close cases and also want to quickly share the joy of solving a major case.”

At this moment, Director Hou turned his head, his gaze falling on Jiang An beside him.

Jiang An, eyes slightly squinted, leaned his head against the seat, breathing evenly and deeply.

Days of high-intensity work had left him so exhausted that he fell asleep during a break between reports.

Director Hou’s lips unconsciously curled into a slight smile, turning back to speak to General Director Yang on the phone, ”General Director Yang, the credit for cracking this case so quickly really doesn’t lie with me.”

”Not you? Aren’t you part of the special investigation team?”

”You solved the case, and from local units to the victim’s family, everyone is filled with gratitude toward the task force; can that be false?”

The puzzled voice of General Director Yang came from the other end.

Director Hou took a deep breath, his tone sincere and calm, ”Indeed, it’s the task force, but the team isn’t just me, more importantly, we have Jiang An.”

”Jiang An?”

”Yes, him.”

Director Hou said, unconsciously glancing again at the sleeping figure beside him.
