The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Director Hou immediately pressed on, ”Did Wu Guang say how that girl managed to escape at the time?”

”According to Wu Guang’s recollection, they lured the girl from her school to this remote village under the pretense of introducing her to a job.”

”The girl was educated, quick-thinking, strong-willed, and she never gave up the idea of resisting.”

”While the guards were eating, she seized the opportunity and quietly slipped out of the room where she was being held.”

”Because she fled in such a hurry, she didn’t even have time to put on her shoes, and her clothes were in complete disarray.”

”This detail happens to match exactly the clues we found during our on-site examination—this will undoubtedly become an important breakthrough point for our next step in solving the case.

Jiang An nodded thoughtfully and continued to ask, ”Did he mention where exactly this girl was from?”

Mr. Qin shook his head. ”Her exact place of origin really isn’t clear.”

”But based on Wu Guang’s recollection, this girl was probably targeted while she was studying at some vocational technical college.”

”It’s said that her nickname included the character ’Juan’, and everyone was used to calling her that.”

”What about her ID documents?”

”Her personal documents had long since been disposed of, not a trace left behind.”

Hearing this, Director Hou did not get discouraged. Instead, he showed a look of confidence.

”That’s all right.”

”As long as we can confirm when and where she was lured away, we can definitely follow the vine to find the melon.”

Mr. Qin suddenly said, ”Once it’s light, I’ll lead a team to that vocational technical college and conduct a thorough check on their graduates from recent years.”

”As long as we screen out the girls whose nicknames or given names contain the character ’Juan’, then cross-check with features like age and sex, we can basically lock down the victim’s identity.”

”That’s a very solid line of thought.”

Jiang An nodded in agreement. ”Once we confirm her identity, our previous deductions will have a solid foundation.”

Right after that, Mr. Qin immediately sprang to his feet, energized. ”Political Commissioner Li, I request to take a team to the vocational technical college and start the investigation right now!”

Director Hou glanced at his watch and waved with a smile. ”No need to rush this very minute.”

Mr. Qin, as if injected with chicken blood, said, ”It takes two and a half hours to drive there. If we arrive at eight o’clock, we’ll hit their office hours perfectly, which will make our work easier.”

”Then it’s settled!”

Political Commissioner Li patted Mr. Qin on the shoulder approvingly. ”With this kind of drive, it’s a real pity if you don’t get promoted.”

Mr. Qin chuckled and said half-jokingly, ”Political Commissioner, don’t paint this cake for too long. If it gets cold, it won’t taste good anymore.”

”You brat, always bargaining with me.”

Political Commissioner Li was amused, then said seriously, ”But to be honest, although we can’t say it’s in the bag yet, the success rate is at least ninety percent.”

”We can’t talk too big.”

Mr. Qin shook his head in mock seriousness. ”Before the final results are publicly announced, anything can happen.”

Political Commissioner Li laughed heartily. ”It’s not that dramatic.”

”In administration work, what we emphasize is the actual effectiveness of solving cases. Slick talk alone won’t cut it.”

”But seeing how serious you are, once this case is cracked, I’ll definitely put in a strong recommendation for you at the Party committee meeting.”

After Mr. Qin left, the conference room fell briefly quiet.

Political Commissioner Li slowly turned around, his gaze landing on Jiang An, who had been standing quietly to the side. He spoke in a grave tone, ”Mr. Jiang, this case is of extraordinary significance for our Municipal Bureau.”

”Since the establishment of the city public security bureau, this is the first time we’ve handled a case of such a large scale and such a vicious nature.”

”I just gave the director a detailed report, and he places great importance on it.”

”He specifically mentioned that the breakthrough in this case has given our entire Municipal Bureau a lot of face—and this is all thanks to the breakthrough progress achieved under your and Director Hou’s leadership.”

Hearing this, Director Hou smiled slightly. ”You flatter us, Political Commissioner Li.”

”In fact, the key breakthrough in this case is mainly due to Comrade Jiang An’s keen insight and rigorous professional competence.”

”If he hadn’t insisted on digging deeper into the clues, we might have stopped at treating it as a case of corpse disposal after a traffic accident.”

”Looking back now, compared with the case in front of us, that traffic accident is like just the tip of the iceberg above the waterline.”

”It was because we started from this small entry point and kept drilling down layer by layer that we finally brought to light this major case that spans a wide area, involves many suspects, and features extremely vicious criminal methods.”

Facing the affirmation from the two leaders, Jiang An bowed slightly. ”This is all just part of our job.”

”However, even though we’ve made major progress in the trafficking case, the work of securing justice for the victim has only just begun.”

”That’s well said.”

Director Hou nodded in agreement. ”Although we’ve already clarified the victim’s identity information, time has passed, and trying to find the hit-and-run driver from back then out of the vast sea of people is indeed a formidable challenge.”

”This will not only require investing a large amount of police manpower in screening, but also require us to adopt new investigative approaches and technical means.”

Political Commissioner Li kept nodding as he listened, his expression growing even more serious. ”Exactly.”

”When handling long-pending cases, the greatest difficulty lies in collecting and preserving evidence.”

”To form a complete chain of evidence and ultimately bring the suspect to justice, we have to put in an extraordinary amount of effort.”

”What we especially need to keep in mind is that in this traffic accident, the perpetrator fled the scene after the incident. His failure to act directly led to the victim’s death. From a legal standpoint, this already constitutes indirect intentional homicide.”

Right after saying that, Political Commissioner Li added quickly, ”Director Hou, Mr. Jiang, you can rest easy.”

”This time, our Municipal Public Security Bureau will absolutely go all out, mobilizing every resource we can. We won’t just make this an iron case; we’ll make it an iron case that can stand up to scrutiny from both the law and history!”

As he spoke, he raised his hand to glance at his watch and showed a concerned smile. ”Oh, look at the time—it’s already breakfast.”

”You’ve all worked through the night; you must be hungry, right?”

”Why don’t I treat everyone to something simple to eat, fill our stomachs a bit, and then we can carry on with the work.”

Hearing this, Director Hou patted his own belly and laughed loudly. ”Isn’t that the truth? If you hadn’t mentioned it, I wouldn’t even have realized my front chest is practically stuck to my back.”

With that, they pushed open the glass door of the conference room and walked out.

As they walked, Political Commissioner Li enthusiastically introduced, ”We have a noodle shop around here. The place is small, but the taste is really authentic. It’s already become an internet-famous check-in spot.”

”Their broth is made by simmering old hen and pork bones for over ten hours, and the noodles are hand-made. You really have to try it.”

Director Hou nodded with a smile. ”With that kind of recommendation from Political Commissioner Li, we’d be rude not to oblige.”

As they talked, they arrived at the public security bureau’s parking lot.

Director Hou and Jiang An got into Political Commissioner Li’s private car. Political Commissioner Li personally took the driver’s seat, started the engine, and slowly drove out of the bureau’s gate.

While they were on their way to the noodle shop, Mr. Qin was leading two trusted officers, driving a police car rapidly toward the vocational technical college.

At this moment, Mr. Qin was in high spirits, as if infused with new energy.

He gripped the steering wheel tightly with both hands, his gaze fixed firmly on the road ahead.

It was only natural: after so many years of effort and waiting, he was finally seeing the light of hope.

If he handled this case beautifully, the deputy director’s seat would be within reach.

That’s a member of the bureau’s leadership team. Once he sat in that position, it would mean he could finally say goodbye to the days of staying up late and running around on the front line.

Thinking of this, Mr. Qin unconsciously tightened his grip and held the steering wheel even harder.

To him, this assignment had already gone far beyond an ordinary case.

It wasn’t just the top priority of his current work; it was also a critical turning point in his career.

A new starting point that might change the course of his professional life.
