Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

”What medication is this?” the director asked casually.

Generally, the amount of medication needed before surgery is calculated in advance, unless there’s a special circumstance requiring an emergency dispatch from the pharmacy.

”Glucose,” the nurse explained. ”Director Ji has a bit of low blood sugar, so we prepared some glucose in advance for emergencies.”

”This Ji Chuan...” the director understood that Ji’s surgery schedule was very full these past few days. ”If it really gets too much, just take a break! Why push himself to the point of low blood sugar?”

If a doctor were to experience low blood sugar during surgery, it could be very serious. What if an accident happened and the patient was harmed?

The nurse passed the medication through the crack of the door, and the director immediately inquired about the situation inside.

”The surgery is going smoothly! Don’t worry.”

”What about Ji Chuan and his low blood sugar...”

”Director, our Director Ji is indeed on track to be elected our hospital’s model worker of the year. He goes from one surgery to the next. He even saved a severely injured car accident patient at around four in the morning... He hardly has time for breakfast; no wonder he has low blood sugar...”

”Dr. Ji is working very hard,” Qiu Xinyi remarked emotionally.

”Indeed. His reputation has spread, and many patients come specifically for him. Ji Chuan’s surgical volume is currently the highest in the hospital. He handles all sorts of surgeries! Some patients even specifically request him.” The director couldn’t stop praising him.

”With his current position, he doesn’t really need to do so many surgeries, does he?”

”That’s true. But when patients come in, can you really bear to turn them away?”

”I suppose not.”

The two of them chatted for a bit longer in the hallway. The director inquired again about the situation inside and was informed that the surgery was nearly finished and that they were in the suturing phase.

He had other matters to attend to, so he left.

Upon hearing that Ji Chuan would be out once the suturing was done, Qiu Xinyi felt a weight lift off her chest. So, she simply left the hospital to buy Ji Chuan some breakfast.

When she arrived back, the surgery hadn’t completely finished yet, so she decided to take the breakfast straight to Ji Chuan’s office.

In Ji Chuan’s office, there were generally no valuable items or important documents, just some medical books, so he rarely locked the door.

Moreover, the lock was a pain to use. Once locked, it took quite an effort to unlock the door, which made him dislike locking it even more.

Usually, when colleagues from the hospital came looking for Ji Chuan, they’d just push the door open for a peek. If he wasn’t there, they’d leave; they wouldn’t normally hang around for long.

But Qiu Xinyi was ”different” in that regard.

After discovering that Ji Chuan often didn’t lock his door, she came and went from Ji Chuan’s office frequently, and there she was again, carrying breakfast inside.

She placed the steaming breakfast in a conspicuous spot on the table and was about to leave when suddenly, the phone on the desk rang. She hesitated about whether she should answer the phone for Ji Chuan.

After a few seconds of consideration, she thought it best not to answer.

Unexpectedly, the phone kept ringing incessantly, one call after another, never ending.

Qiu Xinyi wondered if it might be an urgent matter for the phone to be ringing non-stop. She worried about what might happen if Ji Chuan missed an important call.

As it turned out, the call was indeed very important for Ji Chuan.

This call was really meant for Ji Chuan, but it was Qiu Xinyi who picked it up, and you can imagine the consequences.

”Hello, who is this?” Qiu Xinyi asked as she picked up the receiver.
