Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 2345: Chapter 2338: Ginger Sugar Water

”That’s what I said,” Yan Huan replied.

”And yet you say you don’t care... He came all this way to see you, doesn’t that touch you even a little bit? Doesn’t it stir up any small ripples in your heart?” An Hao smiled and winked at her.

”Hey, he didn’t just come to see me, there’s also you guys...”

”Come on! Do you even believe that? I’m telling you, don’t be coy, it doesn’t suit you!”

”Alright, I admit he came to see me.” Yan Huan knew she couldn’t hide anything from An Hao’s eyes, ”Saying I’m not touched would be a lie. He traveled all night and got rained on, I want to make him a bowl of ginger sugar water to ward off the cold!”

”Alright. Let’s do it! We can’t cook here, let’s go borrow a pot at a villager’s house!” An Hao put on her clothes, rummaged through a box, found some brown sugar, and walked out with Yan Huan.

An Hao and Yan Huan arrived at Xiao Shitou’s house, the nearest from where they were.

Xiao Shitou’s father has coronary heart disease, needs surgery to insert a stent, but the family has always been short of money, so the condition has been delayed, until the doctors from the PLA Affiliated Hospital came, and he went for treatment.

It just so happened to be An Hao who received him, inquired about his condition, gave him a lot of medicine, told him things he needed to pay attention to in daily life, and wrote him a recommendation letter for surgery at the hospital.

Xiao Shitou’s parents were deeply grateful to An Hao, so they packed their bags and went to Nancheng.

Little Xiao Shitou often follows his grandmother to the medical point for treatment. An Hao found him cute and sensible, so she often talked to him and gave him food, and over time, they became familiar.

When An Hao and Yan Huan arrived, Xiao Shitou’s grandmother was cooking noodles in the pot.

Seeing them arriving, Xiao Shitou’s grandmother warmly welcomed them, ”Dr. An is here, come in and have a seat!”

”Ma’am, we have a doctor who’s caught a cold, we wanted to make some ginger sugar water for him to drive away the cold! Can’t do it at our place, it rained so all the dry wood is wet. We hoped to trouble you and borrow your stove.” An Hao explained their purpose.

”Of course! It’s no big deal! I’ll make it for you!” Xiao Shitou’s grandmother rolled up her sleeves and was ready to make ginger sugar water.

”No need to trouble you! We’ll do it ourselves! But, our ginger...”

”Take as much as you need from what we have.” Xiao Shitou’s grandmother said.

”That’s great.” An Hao was delighted.

”You really have a way with people!” Yan Huan gave An Hao a thumbs up, ”You’ve only been here a short time and you’re getting along with everyone so well!”

”The folks here are very simple and kind!” An Hao said to Yan Huan, pointing at the stove, ”Do you know how to use it? Can you make ginger sugar water?”

In the early nineties, city people used coal stoves for cooking. This poor mountain village still uses self-built stoves, and Yan Huan, who grew up in the city, might not know how to use it.

”I can do it. You’re underestimating me too much!”

”Alright! It’s all yours, I won’t get involved. I’ll go chat with Xiao Shitou.”

”Wait. Could you help me with it?” Yan Huan tentatively asked.

An Hao rolled her eyes dramatically, throwing a sentence at her: ”This ginger sugar water is for Ji Chuan, not Qin Jian!”

”Hey... can’t you have a bit of communist spirit of selfless devotion?” Yan Huan hadn’t finished her sentence before An Hao disappeared without a trace.

”Heartless,” Yan Huan muttered a couple of complaints, then obediently picked up the kitchen knife herself.
