Peninsula: Director of Public Prosecutions Starts with Daily Intelligence

Is delayed justice still justice? (Seeking monthly votes)Facing Lee Se-hyun’s questioning gaze, Seo Taesoo explained, ”This stall owner is a disabled person with an intellectual disability.”

”And she is the mother of the victim, Lee So-hee.”

”Intellectual disability?” Lee Se-hyun asked.

”Intellectual disability is the medical term in the clinical field. Simply put, it’s what we call a slow-witted person.”

Lee Se-hyun stopped speaking. He truly wasn’t clear about this. His understanding of The King’s plot in his previous life only covered the general direction.

Some details, such as Seo Taesoo’s wife’s name, or the final fate of Song Baekho’s old man, Councilman Song, were completely unknown to him.

Song Baekho, however, was apparently crippled by Seo Taesoo’s good brother, Gouhuan, in the end.

”Wontons... are here,” the female stall owner stammered a bit, but her hands holding the bowls were very steady.

Two steaming hot bowls of wontons, emitting steam, looked delicious and smelled fragrant.

”Delicious!” Lee Se-hyun praised, clearly unwilling to continue discussing the topic of the victim’s mother.

Seeing this, Seo Taesoo said no more and quietly ate his wontons.

Those with different paths do not conspire together; those with different ambitions do not become friends.

The basis for two people to continue a conversation is that both parties are willing; otherwise, it becomes pandering.

”This boss’s cooking is pretty good. If she went to a livelier street in the city center, it would be easy to earn some small money.”

Lee Se-hyun said to himself.

”Do you think that’s possible?” Seo Taesoo retorted.

An intellectually disabled person, a slow-witted person, starting a business and opening a shop in a bustling, lively area of the city? Isn’t that a joke?

Within a few days, she would be eaten by those sibal bastards until not even bone fragments remained.

”But you’re here, Prosecutor Seo Taesoo. With you protecting her, who would dare to cause trouble?” Lee Se-hyun teased.

”This...”

Lee Se-hyun looked at Seo Taesoo’s hesitant expression and continued, ”What, do you have difficulties? Be a good person all the way.”

”There’s an old saying in Xia Kingdom: ’Help people to the end, send the Buddha to the West,’ isn’t there?”

”Since you like being a good person so much, why can’t you do it?”

Facing Lee Se-hyun’s soul-searching questions, Seo Taesoo was a bit flustered. Even if he did that, would it really be useful?

He could use his power as a Prosecutor to help a mentally disabled person open a wonton shop. He believed no one would be foolish enough to provoke him.

But... Seo Taesoo countered, ”Can I help them, the mother and daughter, for a while, but not for a lifetime?”

”That’s the point, you understand this principle yourself.” Lee Se-hyun ate another wonton and took a satisfying sip of soup.

”Even if you send Song Baekho to jail, what then?”

Then Lee Se-hyun pointed at Lee So-hee’s mother: ”Song Baekho will be out in a few years. What will happen to them then?”

”What will happen to you?” Lee Se-hyun patted Seo Taesoo’s shoulder: ”By then, you might have forgotten all about this. It’s questionable if you’ll even remember the mother and daughter.”

”No!!!”

Seo Taesoo stood up excitedly.

”The hardest thing to fathom in the world is the human heart, junior brother.” Lee Se-hyun finished his last wonton, wiped his mouth with a tissue, and stood up as well.

”I will make that beast Song Baekho stay in prison forever! Until he repents for his crimes!”

Lee Se-hyun shook his head helplessly. He guessed Seo Taesoo had just come out of school and hadn’t yet seen the wickedness of this world clearly.

”Do you think that because you became a Prosecutor, the whole world revolves around you?”

”Whose son is Song Baekho, you know better than I, right?”

”Don’t say such naive and idiotic things; you’ll only harm others!” Lee Se-hyun didn’t intend to continue debating with Seo Taesoo.

Truth becomes more muddled the more it’s discussed; only facts prove everything.

Practice is the sole criterion for testing truth!

Different stances naturally lead to different viewpoints.

Seo Taesoo, a young calf unafraid of tigers, wanting to be a hero for the sake of his passion and chivalrous spirit, is understandable.

Lee Se-hyun, on the other hand, came with a mission. Regardless of anything else, this matter concerned his own fame and fortune, promotions, wealth, and even his own life.

Only by growing rapidly, climbing step by step to the top, could he gradually control his own destiny and protect those he wanted to protect.

The conflict between the two began here.

Facing Lee Se-hyun’s grand principles, Seo Taesoo was rendered speechless, for ideals seemed so fragile in the face of reality.

Seo Taesoo clenched his fists unwillingly and shouted at Lee Se-hyun’s retreating back, ”Are they just supposed to be bullied?!”

”They don’t even have a place to cry out for injustice!”

”Song Baekho committed evil deeds yet lives a carefree life. Is it just because he’s the son of a Councilman? Can he just disregard the law like this!!!”

”Is there any justice left! Is there any law left!”

Lee Se-hyun paused, feeling a bit troubled in his heart. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to kill that beast Song Baekho.

Judging from the short video clips of ”The King” in his previous life, he was so angry his teeth itched, wishing Song Baekho would immediately suffer retribution.

But when it genuinely involved him, various complex things intertwined.

Directly sending Song Baekho to prison might be satisfying, but only for a while. Before long, Song Baekho would be released on parole with a reduced sentence.

If anyone was to blame, it was that Seo Taesoo and his allies were too weak to contend with the forces behind them.

”Why? Just because he has a good father, just because he’s the son of a Councilman – that’s enough!”

Seo Taesoo was speechless once again. The crux of this matter was that Song Baekho had a Councilman for a father.

Otherwise, this case would have been closed long ago. With The Peninsula’s Prosecutor’s all-in-one service of arresting, detaining, and scapegoating, evidence would be gathered one day and he’d be in prison the next.

Seo Taesoo wanted to say more. He opened his mouth but remained silent. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to admit what Lee Se-hyun said.

In terms of actual actions, Seo Taesoo had collected enough incriminating evidence, yet Song Baekho had not been convicted. From a certain perspective,

Seo Taesoo hadn’t truly confronted Song Baekho head-on and settled the matter; instead, he had left time for various forces to react. This was self-evident.

Overall, Seo Taesoo couldn’t let go of his heroic image. He just needed someone to give him an out, and Seo Taesoo would jump at it without hesitation.

How ironic. That’s how it was, at least in the TV show’s plot.

Although in the TV show, Seo Taesoo still showed kindness by increasing the compensation for the mother and child several times, which showed he still had a conscience.

Later on, he completely forgot about the mother and daughter, and it was likely they met a tragic end.

Lee Se-hyun looked at Seo Taesoo, who was as stubborn as an ox, and had no other choice but to make one last attempt at persuasion, then go straight for the big move.

The allure of power, fame, and fortune—these would trigger the seeds of desire in Seo Taesoo’s heart, allowing them to take root and sprout.

Lee Se-hyun advised, ”Justice may be late, but it will never be absent.”

”Is delayed justice still justice?!!!”
