The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

After listening, Shu Yu pondered for a moment. ”For someone like him, even if he’s out of the slave register and out of the household, he shouldn’t have trouble finding a place, right?”

Aunt Hong nodded. ”He really doesn’t have to worry about a place. After he came out, the Chen Family were actually quite happy. Knowing he had some savings in his hands, they wanted to cling to him. The lad was tough, though. Since they’d sold him, then he was no longer of the Chen Family and would have nothing more to do with them. After that, he found a shop and worked there as an accountant for two years. The boss of that shop fell ill and passed away not long after. The shop closed down, and he came out again.”

Of course, he could completely have found another place. It wasn’t difficult for him.

Who knew the Chen Family bore a grudge against him for cutting ties so coldly, and actually went around saying he was a ”heaven‑sent lone star of misfortune.” Otherwise, they wouldn’t have sold this child back then either; they claimed they hadn’t expected that wherever he went, disaster followed. The little Young Master before had fallen seriously ill, and the boss of the later shop had also died of illness—both, they said, were killed by his ill fate.

Many people, of course, didn’t believe such talk, but many did.

And whether they believed it or not, it started to become difficult for Chen Kangtai to find work.

At this point, Aunt Hong couldn’t help lifting her head to look at Shu Yu. ”I’ve seen that child a few times. He’s very quick‑witted, polite, looks proper, and speaks in fine phrases. I don’t believe in that so‑called lone‑star fate of his. But if Lady Lu minds, then... then just take it as if I never mentioned it.”

Aunt Hong felt Shu Yu probably wouldn’t believe it, because back when Gouwa was born and his father and Mother had accidents one after another, there were people saying Gouwa brought misfortune to his parents too. But didn’t Lady Lu still take the boy away, and hasn’t she raised him this well?

Shu Yu truly didn’t care about that. She exchanged a glance with Manager Yun, then nodded and asked, ”How long has it been since he left the last shop?”

”Just over twenty days.”

”All right then. Later, Aunt Hong, help me pass on a message and have him come over tomorrow to give it a try. I’ll meet him first, ask some questions. If he doesn’t fit, I won’t keep him.”

Aunt Hong nodded immediately. ”All right, I’ll go back now.”

She wasn’t just helping Chen Kangtai; she also wanted to help Shu Yu solve her current difficulty.

Aunt Hong moved quickly and didn’t stay any longer. She picked up her basket and left the shop.

Shu Yu had thought she’d only see him at the earliest the next day; unexpectedly, that very afternoon Aunt Hong brought Chen Kangtai over.

Shu Yu had Manager Yun interview him. Chen Kangtai spoke with substance, knew how to advance and retreat appropriately, clearly habits ingrained from childhood. At first glance, Shu Yu felt he seemed quite good.

When Manager Yun finished his questions, he too nodded in satisfaction.

And so the matter was settled. After Chen Kangtai roughly understood what he needed to do, he stayed directly on the second floor of the shop and began cleaning, then immediately went to look at the two paintings, and afterward carefully examined the brushes, ink, paper, and inkstones Shu Yu had bought, going through them twice.

He didn’t let himself stay idle, and Manager Yun watched from the side, very pleased.

With the staff for the second floor settled, Shu Yu could finally breathe a sigh of relief.

And one more day later, it would be the shop’s opening day.

Early in the morning, the sound of firecrackers went off at the main doors of Lu’s. The red silk was lifted, and Lu’s officially opened.

Hearing such lively noise, quite a few people came to the doors to watch the fun, especially the shopkeepers from the surrounding shops, all craning their necks to look this way.

Manager Yun immediately called out to everyone, ”The new shop of the newly appointed Master Top Scorer is opening. Everything is ten percent off. Folks passing by, don’t miss out—come in and have a look, see what our Master Top Scorer usually eats and uses!”
