Transmigrated as a Peasant Baby Who is Pampered by All

Chapter 495: Chapter 307: Yang Shulin (Part 2)

Coincidentally, the breeding period for small river shrimp is from August to October.

After learning about the small river shrimp, she secretly bought a few pounds from the market without telling anyone else, added them to the ones she had hidden initially, and placed them all in her space.

In just a month or two, they had reproduced quite a bit.

Earlier, she had directly taken out half of the small river shrimp from her space, placed some in the pond at home, and then put some in the nearby pool.

She also planned to take a trip to the mountains when she had time and put some small river shrimp in the pool at the top.

”The sun’s so hot, aren’t you feeling warm?”

Jiang Hu said while placing a straw hat on Xiaomi’s head.

The adult-sized hat was too big and covered Xiaomi’s entire head.

Xiaomi quickly adjusted it: ”I’m not hot, I want to go to the city and take a look, I haven’t been there in a long time.”

Earlier, she had secretly gone back to her room to take some Silver Coin, though not much, just over twenty taels.

Fortunately, this was only her thinking to herself; had she said it out loud, Yang Shulin wouldn’t know how to react.

Over twenty taels, and not much?

That amount could support a family of five for several years!

But in reality, this amount was just a bit better than the boys at home other than Liu Ze; compared to her second sister, it was far off.

Jiang Hu laughed, raised his whip, and set off.

By the time they reached the city gate, it was almost noon. Only a few people were lining up, and when they drove the two carts of fish over, it instantly caused a small commotion.

The city gate guards did the usual inspection and collected three copper coins as the city entrance fee.

One of the guards, seeing no one behind them, signaled Jiang Hu to stop.

”These fish look pretty good, who are you delivering them to?”

”We raise these fish ourselves in the paddy fields. We’re about to harvest the rice, so we caught the fish to deliver to a few restaurants.”

Jiang Hu was honest and straightforward but not rigid, and immediately scooped up a few fish, threading a straw rope through their gills.

”Thank you for your hard work, gentlemen. Take a fish home to try. I’ll be bringing two or three thousand pounds of fish again tomorrow. If you think it’s good, do recommend it to your friends.”

The fish were all about the same size, including silver carp, grass carp, and crucian carp. A straw rope threaded through two smaller crucian carp.

The guard took only one fish but didn’t take it directly. Instead, he took a few copper coins from his pockets.

”Your fish do look lively and plump, but I’ll pass on taking it. I want to keep my job intact. This fish weighs around two pounds, right? Here, five copper coins.”

While speaking, he weighed the grass carp in his hand and handed Jiang Hu five copper coins.

”Brothers, we’re swapping shifts soon. I’ll take this fish home first; my old mother has been saying she wanted fish for the past few days.”

Unfortunately, he’s been on morning duty recently, and by the time he finished, there were no fish left at the market.

He originally planned to go check the lake north of the city in the afternoon to see if any fishermen were around. Unexpectedly, someone brought a cart full of fish right to him.

His colleague waved it off: ”You go ahead and take it home.”

He gestured for Jiang Hu to continue, indicating they weren’t buying fish.

Seeing this, Jiang Hu put the fish back in the mixing bucket and drove the buffalo forward again.

The fish had a strong smell; if not handled properly, it would be inedible and waste other ingredients. Therefore, others weren’t interested in the fish, and Jiang Hu didn’t find it strange.

Moreover, fish had many bones and had to be eaten slowly. They weren’t greasy, so women, children, and the elderly liked them more, while men preferred the feeling of eating meat heartily and weren’t much interested in fish.

They had just entered the city and already made five copper coins.

And if his memory served, when Jiang Hu initially hired people to help catch small fish, he was prepared to pay them.

However, since everyone earned money by working for the Jiang family at the time, they didn’t ask for payment; catching fish was easy and fun.

In other words, it was zero cost and pure profit!

Yang Shulin was already starting to feel envious, even if it was just five copper coins.

”Brother Jiang, please don’t get upset when I ask, but could you teach us how to raise paddy field fish next year? But rest assured, we’ll only sell them after you’ve sold all of yours!”

The Jiang family’s paddy fish grew really well; even the small ones were plump. He’d helped catch them, and these paddy fish were strong and lively, unlike ordinary fish!

Even someone who didn’t know could definitely tell the difference at a glance.

Though he spoke grandly with his wife about raising their own next year, he still asked Jiang Hu now.

Mostly, he thought that raising fish ought to be similar to raising pigs or chickens, each with its techniques.

If he tried on his own and didn’t grasp the techniques, he might fail to catch anything at all.

If Jiang Hu was willing to share a bit, even if the yield wasn’t as high as the Jiang family’s, a hundred pounds of fish per acre would still be a nice profit!

Even though fish was cheap, it was worth two copper coins a pound!

Yang Shulin was calculating furiously in his head. In the past six months, he’d worked quite a bit for the Jiang family and made good money, making life much better than previous years.

Even his wife, who was pregnant, was a bit plumper than before.

But making money through hard labor wasn’t as appealing as learning a skill.

He noticed that Zhang Yuan’s little girl had been learning to hunt from Xiaomi, and their family had been eating meat several times lately.

Jiang Hu had no idea of Yang Shulin’s many thoughts and just shook his head at the request.

”It’s not that complicated. There are so many people here, how much fish can one village produce? People from even a small town could buy up all the paddy fish from our entire village.”

Jiang Hu was referring to when they were back in Fu’an Village. Once his family started, everyone in the village began raising paddy field fish.

Yang Shulin was clever and instantly understood what Jiang Hu meant.

”Great, thank you, Brother Jiang. If you’re low on small fish for the pond next year, let me know. My brother-in-law lives by the lake north of the city and specializes in fishing!”

Ordinary folks didn’t like eating fish because it was troublesome to prepare, but restaurants and wealthy families did, so fishing could be a livelihood.

Jiang Hu was intrigued, smiled, and said, ”That’s great, I was worried there wouldn’t be enough small fish next year.”

As they talked, they’d already arrived at a restaurant closest to the city gate, and with a pull on the reins, the ox came to a stop.
