Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 499: Chapter 494: The Reunion

Location:Obsidian Academy — Private Courtyard / Dragon Estate

Date/Time:1 Frostforge, 9942 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

Green found her first.

The courtyard behind the Academy’s north wing was empty. Jayde had walked there out of instinct — the trained need for enclosed ground with stone at her back and clear sightlines out. The mantis followed. Eden followed the mantis. The rest of the plateau was still working through the caskets and the bracelets and the fact that an army had materialized in formation on its front step, and nobody was looking at the north courtyard.

Green came through the archway at a walk. Five foot two. Fractured emerald eyes — the shattered-glass irises that no disguise artifact had ever been able to dull. Ash-blonde hair. She was wearing the healer’s robe she wore at the Academy, the one that made her look like a junior practitioner and not something old enough that asking her age felt like asking a mountain how tall it was.

She stopped three paces away. Looked at her. Not at the armor, not at the crossbow, not at the Charling.

”You’re thinner,” Green said.

”I ate.”

”Not enough.”

Green crossed the three paces and put her arms around her, and the fractures in the emerald eyes were wet, and Jayde stood very still inside the grip of the woman who was the closest thing to a mother she had on this world, and let herself stop holding the shape of a commander for the first time in a year.

Four seconds. Maybe five. Green’s arms were small and fierce, and her hands went flat against Jayde’s back like she was checking the bones were all where she had left them.

Then she stepped back and wiped her eyes with the heel of her hand and set her jaw.

”The mantis.” Not a question. The healer’s eyes were already moving over the creature with the clinical attention of someone who had been treating non-human physiology longer than most species had existed. ”Chitin cracks. Blade-arm damage. Sensory pit irregularity, left anterior cluster.”

”It fought a war.”

”I can see that.” Green looked at the mantis. The mantis looked at Green. The sensory pits read an essence signature the creature had no category for, and its response was to shift half a step closer to Jayde’s hip. ”It does not know what I am.”

”Neither do most people.”

The corner of Green’s mouth moved. The first almost-smile.

Then it went, and she said, in a completely different voice: ”You’ve changed.”

”Yes.”

”I do not mean thinner.”

”I know what you mean.”

Green looked at her for a long moment — at whatever was in her face now that had not been in it a year ago, the thing that a hundred and ninety-seven names put into a person and does not take back out.

”All right,” Green said. ”Later, then.”

***

White came seven minutes after.

Six foot eight. Steel grey eyes. White hair. The bone-handled whip coiled at his belt. He came through the archway without haste, the way he did everything — measured, deliberate, carrying the specific weight of a man who had spent his life making certain the things he guarded stayed guarded.

He looked at the armor. At the crossbow. At the Charling.

”You built an army,” he said.

”I did.”

”Inside the Harrowing.”

”Yes.”

He was quiet. The steel grey eyes held something Jayde had never seen in them — not surprise, not assessment, not the professional evaluation he ran on threats and assets. Something older than any of it, living in the space between a mentor and the student he had not been able to reach.

”I should have been faster,” he said.

”You couldn’t have been.”

”I should have been faster anyway.”

He crossed the courtyard and took his position — slightly behind, slightly right, the place he had stood since the day he started training her. The mantis read him, filed not a threat, and went back to watching the archway.

***

Eden had not said a word since they came through the archway.

She was standing near the wall with Zhi wound at her throat, and she was looking at Green with the particular expression of a doctor who has spent a year improvising surgery with cultivation compounds and salvaged instruments, and is now standing four meters from the person who made the compounds.

”Your protocol book,” Green said to her. ”It reached eleven villages.”

”It reached—” Eden stopped. ”Eleven?”

”I disagreed with a third of it and taught all of it anyway.” Green’s fractured eyes moved over her — the malnourished frame, the hands, the way she was standing. ”You will come to the herb hall tomorrow, and we will argue about the third. Today you are going to sit down before you fall down.”

Eden sat down.

Yinxin came at midday, and the wyrmlings came with her.

Jayde felt her before she saw her — but the contract had already come back on the mountainside that morning, snapping taut across the boundary like a struck bell, so what she felt now was not the return. It was the approach. Yinxin coming closer through the city, the frequency tightening the way a held note tightens.

The Silver Dragon Queen walked through the Academy’s main gate in human form. Silver-white hair dulled to flat ash by the pendant. Golden eyes muted. The gray robe. Three children at her heels with pendants at their throats, unremarkable in every direction, a modest household on unremarkable business.

She crossed the courtyard with her steps measured and her back straight and her hands at her sides.

She stopped in front of Jayde.

The golden eyes — the one thing the pendant could never entirely mute — found the brown ones, and for a moment neither of them said anything.

”Yinxin.”

Her composure held the way a dam holds. Completely, perfectly, right up until it does not. Something shifted behind the gold. Not tears — she was three thousand years old and had been hunted for most of them and did not cry in courtyards. But her jaw set, and her breathing changed, and the hands at her sides closed and opened twice before she trusted them to be still.

”You are standing here,” Yinxin said. Steady. Almost. The crack in it was small enough that only someone three feet away would have caught it.

”I’m standing here.”

”The contract went thin. You have no idea—” She stopped. Closed her eyes. Opened them. ”I went down to the cellar every night. Every night, for a year. The circle was dark. The contract was a thread. And I stood there and told myself that a thread was enough. That a thread meant alive. That I would know if it broke, because the knowing would kill me.”

She breathed.

”It held. You held. And I am going to require a moment before I discuss the map.”

Jayde reached out and took her hand. The fingers were cold. The grip that closed around hers was not — it was the grip of someone who had been carrying something alone and had just been given permission to set it down.

They stood like that. Five seconds. Ten.

Then Huaxin broke and ran.

The youngest hit Jayde’s legs with the full-body impact of a three-year-old who had been waiting a year to do exactly this. Pearl-cream hair muted to flat brown. Amber eyes muted to something ordinary. The grip was considerably stronger than any human child of three could have produced.

”You came back,” Huaxin said into her hip. Not a statement. A verification. The voice of a child who had been told every night that a thread meant alive, and who had believed it because her mother said so, and who was now checking with her own arms.

Shenxin arrived second. He walked, because Shenxin walked, but he walked fast enough that the walking was a concession to dignity and nothing else. Slate-grey eyes, muted, holding the composure his mother had taught him and finding out that composure had limits he had not mapped yet.

”Hub Twelve is fixed,” he said. ”I rerouted through Village Forty-One. The toll crossing is no longer a factor.”

”Good work.”

Something in his shoulders let go. He stepped in and put his forehead against her arm, and the report about Hub Twelve had been the only sentence he had available for I missed you, and Jayde understood that perfectly well, and put her hand on the back of his head and let him stay.

Tianxin was last. The eldest stopped at the courtyard’s edge, bronze-copper eyes muted, expression thunderous — the default setting of a child who felt everything at full volume and had decided that the correct response to a year of fear was rage.

”You left,” Tianxin said.

”I was pushed.”

”You should have come back sooner.”

”I agree.”

The fury lasted three more seconds. Then she crossed in four strides and put her face into Jayde’s other side, and her arms went round her waist, and the thunderous expression came apart into something that shook, and she held on with the desperate grip of a child who had spent a year being brave and was finished with it.

Over their heads, Yinxin watched her children hold the Sovereign, and her composure came back. Not the same composure she had arrived with. Something rebuilt, with a crack running through it in the place where the cellar and the dark circle and the thin thread had lived, and the crack was going to stay, because some things do not go back.

”It is their birthday,” she said. ”Today. Three years.”

Jayde looked down at the two heads pressed against her.

”Tomorrow,” she said. ”Whatever they want. All of it.”

”They want you,” Yinxin said. ”They have wanted you for a year. You are going to find the bar considerably lower than you are expecting.”

***

They went out to the estate at dusk.

***

Green treated the mantis in the estate’s outer yard, because it would not fit anywhere else and because she refused to leave a patient standing.

She worked in the lamplight with her sleeves pushed up, packing a compound of her own making into the chitin cracks along the creature’s flank, and she talked the entire time.

”This one is old. Weeks. You have been walking around on a split plate for weeks.” Fingers testing the edge of the fracture. ”Whoever let you do that.”

”It doesn’t stop,” Jayde said.

”I did not ask it to stop. I asked who let it.” Green did not look up. ”Hold still. This is going to be cold, and then it is going to be unpleasant, and then it will be finished, and the plate will knit, and you will not do this again.”

The mantis held still.

That was the part Jayde would think about afterward. The creature that had shrugged off Siegebreaker spray and dismissed a hundred cultivators in defensive stances stood absolutely motionless in a lamplit yard for a five-foot-two woman it had known for nine hours, because the woman had put a hand on it first and told it what was going to happen.

Green moved to the left anterior sensory cluster and made a small disapproving sound.

”This will not come back all the way. There is scarring in the pit lining. It will read at reduced range on that side permanently.” She pressed the compound in with her thumb. ”You will compensate. Things do.”

The mantis hummed. The low one.

Green’s hands stopped for about half a second.

”Well,” she said, to nobody. ”Yes. Quite.”

She finished the flank and moved down to the chipped blade-arms, still talking — about edge geometry and about the specific idiocy of using a limb as a shield, and about how the compound would take four days and how she expected to be told if the plate seeped.

Behind her, three children with pendants at their throats sat in a row on the yard wall and watched a Charling get its arms bandaged, and did not make a single sound, in case someone remembered they had a bedtime.

***

Later, Yinxin took her down to the cellar without being asked, because there was nowhere else either of them was going to be able to think about until it had been looked at.

The formation circle was still cut into the floor. Clean lines, sound materials, nothing degraded. Entirely dark — the same dark Yinxin had come down and stood in front of every night for a year.

Jayde crouched at the edge of it and put her fingers just short of the outermost line.

The awakening sequence was still in her head. She had never written it down. She had recited it to herself in the Mid Ring and in the fort and in the corridors between waves, in the dark when the counting got too loud, not because she was afraid of losing it but because saying it was the only way she had of touching him.

Four lines. It would take her nine seconds.

”Tonight?” Yinxin said.

Jayde looked at the dark circle for a long moment. A year underground. Sixty days of war. A hundred and ninety-seven boxes on a plateau that morning, and an old fox waiting at the other end of four lines she could say in her sleep.

”No,” she said, and stood up. ”Not on empty. He gets me at full strength, or he waits another day, and he would say the same thing if he could say anything.”

She went up the stairs.

She did not look back at the circle, which took considerably more out of her than the stairs did.

The Panthera came in after dark.

Amaya first, down off the ridge — the mottled grey-and-silver fur stiff with a year of mountain weather, the joints audibly complaining, the golden runic markings across her nose catching the estate’s lamplight. She came into the warded courtyard, went to full size, and stood there breathing for a long while without saying anything.

Canirr arrived an hour behind her. Silver fur streaked electric blue, dull with travel, pale silver eyes sweeping the courtyard the way they swept every space he had ever entered.

She is inside, Amaya said.

I know. I felt her cross the boundary. Clipped. Professional. The pale silver eyes stayed on the estate door for noticeably longer than professional required. Suki and Prota are two days out.

And Takara?

Coming. A pause. He and the shadowbeast left Oceanus this morning at a speed I am not going to describe in a report. The shadowbeast is ahead. He is not stopping.

Good.

I have questions about the Charling.

So does everyone, Amaya said.

They stayed in the courtyard while the lamps burned down — two Panthera who had spent a year ranging a continent and watching a stone, close enough to feel their charge through the walls, unwilling to go in and unwilling to leave.

The vigil was over.

The work was starting.
