Chapter 480: Chapter 475: The Intervention

Location:Mid Ring, Vel’thari Containment — Southern Tunnels

Date/Time:Ashbloom, 9942 AZI — Day 167, 198 days remaining

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The scouting run went wrong at the third junction.

Jayde was alone. That was the first mistake, and she’d made it deliberately. The new students needed two days to recover before training could begin; Eden was in the medical bay monitoring the wounded girl’s recovery, and Meifen was running crossbow drills with the original seven. The southern tunnel network — the sector they hadn’t mapped yet — needed eyes before Jayde could extend patrol routes to cover the new group’s expanded territory.

She’d gone alone because nobody else could move fast enough through unmapped territory and survive what they found there. The exoskeleton carried her at a pace that would have exhausted a Grade 4 cultivator. The siege bow was on her back. The compound crossbow in her hands. The pheromone disruptor canister on her belt, three charges remaining.

The first two junctions were clean. Worker traffic only — columns of drone-caste Charlings moving through the tunnel system in their endless, mindless circuits. They parted around her the way water parted around stone, the pheromone signature that she carried registering as not-food, not-threat, irrelevant. The workers weren’t the problem.

The third junction opened into a cavern.

She smelled them before she saw them. The sharp, acidic tang of Ravager pheromone — not the faint trace of a patrol passing through but the concentrated stench of a nest. The cavern floor was covered in a thick layer of organic matter: shed chitin, amber fluid residue, the compressed remains of processed prey. The walls were scored with mandible marks. The ceiling was punctured with entry holes.

A staging area. A Ravager nest where multiple packs converged, regrouped, and launched from. She’d been looking for something like this since the packs started consolidating.

She’d found it.

And it was occupied.

***

They came from the ceiling. The walls. The floor. Every entry hole vomiting Ravagers in a coordinated eruption that turned the cavern from empty to lethal in under three seconds.

Jayde’s count hit sixteen before she stopped counting.

Sixteen Ravagers. In a confined space. With one exit behind her and a nest-full of chitin between her and it.

She fired the compound crossbow. Two bolts. Two relay hubs. Two Ravagers dropped in the first second. The rest didn’t slow. They came at her in a wave — not the spread fan of pack hunters but the compressed rush of a nest defending its staging area. No tactics. Just mass.

She backpedaled toward the junction entrance. The siege bow came off her back, pre-loaded. She fired. The bolt punched through the lead Ravager’s thorax and buried itself in the creature behind it, pinning two together. They went down in a tangle of legs and chitin and amber fluid.

Twelve left. The exit was fifteen meters behind her.

She fired the compound crossbow. Bolt hit chitin. Chitin cracked. Relay hub destroyed. Eleven. Reloaded. Fired. Ten. Reloaded. The reload took two seconds. Two seconds in which the nest’s worth of Ravagers closed the distance from twelve meters to eight.

The pheromone disruptor. She pulled the canister and fired a burst at the ground between her and the pack. The chemical cloud erupted — a wall of synthetic pheromone that scrambled the Ravagers’ sensory architecture, turning their coordinated rush into a confused tangle of creatures that couldn’t tell friend from food.

Three of them attacked each other. Mandibles closing on the nearest heat source, which happened to be the Ravager beside them. The tangle bought her four seconds.

She used three of them to put two more bolts into relay hubs. Eight left.

She used the fourth to turn and run.

***

The tunnel behind the cavern was narrow. Good for defense — the Ravagers couldn’t flank in single-file terrain. Bad for speed — the exoskeleton’s hydraulics couldn’t hit full stride in a passage that forced her to hunch.

Eight Ravagers pursued. The pheromone cloud was fading. Their sensory pits had recalibrated. They were faster than her in the narrow passage — lower to the ground, built for tunnel pursuit, the articulated legs finding purchase on walls and ceiling and floor simultaneously.

The lead Ravager hit her from behind.

The impact drove her into the tunnel floor. The exoskeleton absorbed the worst of it — the servos locking her joints, preventing the collapse that would have left her prone under a horse-sized predator. But the mandibles found the gap between her shoulder armor and the neck guard. Chitin teeth closed on the exposed underlayer.

The underlayer was reinforced mesh. It held. The teeth didn’t penetrate. But the pressure was enormous — the crushing force of a mandible designed to shear through bone, applied to mesh that was strong enough to resist but not strong enough to make the experience painless. Her left arm went numb from the shoulder down.

She twisted. Got the compound crossbow between her body and the Ravager’s head. Fired upward into the soft tissue beneath the mandible joint. The bolt entered the ganglion cluster and the mandibles released. The Ravager collapsed on top of her.

She shoved the dead weight off with her right arm. The left was coming back — pins and needles, the nerve compression releasing — but the reload required both hands and both hands weren’t available yet.

Seven Ravagers in the tunnel behind her. Closing.

Jayde got to her feet. The exoskeleton’s servos whined — the left shoulder joint had taken damage in the impact, the hydraulic line leaking fluid that dripped down her arm like warm rain. The servos still functioned. The arm still moved. But the power output was halved, and the siege bow’s three-hundred-pound draw required full power from both arms.

She had the compound crossbow. Two bolts loaded. Seven targets. A tunnel that was getting narrower. A left arm that was operating at half power. And the knowledge, cold and clear, that the math didn’t work.

She was going to get hit again. Probably more than once. The armor would hold for the first hit. Maybe the second. The third would find the gap the first two had widened, and then she’d be on the ground with seven Ravagers on top of her and the compound crossbow wouldn’t matter because you couldn’t aim with mandibles in your neck.

She fired. One Ravager down. Six. Fired. Click. Empty. Reload required both hands. Left hand was shaking. She forced the fingers closed around the bolt, slotted it, drew. The draw was weak — the left arm couldn’t provide full tension. The bolt would fly slow. At this range, slow might be enough.

She aimed at the lead Ravager’s relay hub. The creature was four meters away and closing. Three meters. The sensory pits locked on her face. The mandibles opened. The teeth were amber-stained, and the gap between them was the width of her skull.

Two meters.

Something hit the Ravager from the side.

***

The mantis came through the tunnel wall.

Not through an entrance. Through the wall. The blade-arms, which Jayde had only ever seen folded in patient stillness, unfolded with a sound like swords being drawn from sheaths. The translucent chitin that had been thin — brain starving armor — was still thin, but the arms beneath were not thin at all. They were long, curved, edged, and they moved with a speed that turned the tunnel into a killing floor.

The first blade-arm took the lead Ravager’s head off. Clean. The severed head bounced off the tunnel floor, mandibles still cycling. The body ran three steps on reflex and collapsed.

The second blade-arm caught the next Ravager across the thorax. The cut bisected the creature diagonally, the blade passing through chitin and tissue and the neural relay with the ease of something that had been designed, at the species level, to kill exactly this kind of prey.

Two Ravagers in under a second. The remaining four oriented on the new threat. The sensory pits that had been locked on Jayde swiveled toward the mantis, reading the predator that had just materialized in their pursuit corridor.

The mantis didn’t wait for them to finish assessing. It struck. The blade-arms worked in alternating rhythm — left, right, left — each strike precise, each cut aimed at the junction between head and thorax where the neural architecture was most vulnerable. The Ravagers tried to scatter. The tunnel was too narrow. They piled into each other, mandibles snapping at the mantis’s legs, chitin scraping against chitin, and the mantis cut through them the way a scythe cuts through grain.

Six seconds. Four Ravagers. The tunnel floor was slick with amber fluid and scattered chitin fragments and the severed limbs of creatures that had been apex predators of the Mid Ring until something higher on the food chain remembered what its blade-arms were for.

Silence.

Jayde stood in the tunnel with her half-powered exoskeleton and her empty crossbow and her numb left arm, and the mantis stood in front of her with amber fluid dripping from blade-arms that were still extended, the translucent chitin catching the bioluminescent light, and the sensory pits turned toward her.

Not toward the dead Ravagers. Toward her.

The blade-arms folded. Slowly. The same patient, deliberate motion she’d watched at the dead spot boundary for weeks. The arms tucking against the thorax, the edges aligning, the killing tools becoming invisible.

The mantis stepped closer. Lowered its head-plate. Pressed it against her palm.

Warm. The ganglion heat that she’d learned to read as alive, aware, choosing to be here.

The creature that had spent weeks watching her from the boundary, pressing its head against her hand, following her to the edge of combat and waiting for her to return — had followed her into the tunnel. Had watched her fight. Had watched her get pinned. Had watched the math stop working.

And had decided that watching wasn’t enough.

Jayde stood in the tunnel with her hand on a Charling’s head-plate and six dead Ravagers at her feet and the specific, overwhelming understanding that something had just changed. The mantis had crossed a line. Not the boundary line of the dead spot. The line between observer and participant. Between companion and protector.

”Thank you,” she said.

The mantis pressed harder against her palm. The sensory pits tracked her face. The translucent chitin shifted — a subtle color change, warm amber, the frequency that meant recognition.

They walked back to the dead spot together.
