Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 460: Chapter 455: The Base

Location:Mid Ring, Vel’thari Containment — Dead Spot

Date/Time:Late Ashwhisper, 9941 AZI — Day 86, 279 days remaining

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The dead spot had two ships. Jayde intended to use both.

The Resolute was the larger vessel. Rebel transport, sealed hull, intact corridors, crew quarters designed for thirty. The shuttle was smaller but powered: reactor on ultra-low, scrubbers cycling, emergency lighting humming amber through compartments that had been waiting for crew since before the Academy existed. Two ships. Two purposes.

She stood between them in the debris-field dark, handheld beam casting a circle of light that caught the hulls of both vessels, and the tactical mind that had built courier networks and kill zones and a fortress from nothing looked at what she had and saw what it could become.

”The Resolute is the barracks,” Jayde said. ”Living quarters, command post, storage. We sleep here. We plan here.”

Eden was leaning against the shuttle’s hatch, datapad in hand, Zhi on her shoulder. ”And the shuttle?”

”The workshop. The fabricator runs off the shuttle’s reactor. Medical equipment stays aboard. When we need to build, we build here. When we need to treat, we treat here.” Jayde looked at the shuttle’s hull. ”And we don’t take it apart. This shuttle flies again someday.”

Eden raised an eyebrow. ”Flies where?”

”I don’t know yet. But a functioning shuttle is worth more intact than stripped for parts. The debris field has more raw material than we could use in ten years. We don’t need to cannibalize the one vehicle that might carry us somewhere when this is over.”

[The humming ship stays?] Zhi asked through the bond. Eden relayed with a half-smile.

”The humming ship stays,” Jayde confirmed. ”Cool-dim. Safe. And useful.”

***

They set up in the Resolute first.

The ship needed clearing before it became livable. Three days of work, corridor by corridor, compartment by compartment. Debris from the dimensional transit had scattered through the lower decks: buckled storage containers, loose equipment that had broken free of its mounting during whatever forces had brought the ship here, sediment that had filtered through the hull breach across centuries. Jayde and Eden hauled it out by hand, piece by piece, stacking the useful material near the fabricator shuttle and discarding the rest in the debris field.

The hull breach itself needed sealing. Not airtight — they weren’t trying to pressurize the ship. But the gap let the dead spot’s cold air circulate freely, and three months of sleeping in drafts had taught them both that insulation was a survival resource. Jayde cut hull plating from the debris field and welded it over the breach with the plasma cutter, the blue-white blade sealing the metal in a line that would hold against wind and weather if either had existed down here. The corridor temperature rose four degrees within an hour.

Marc’s quarters became the command post. Jayde left the nameplate on the door: CPT. MARCUS ALDRIDGE. She’d stored his personal effects in the ring days ago, but the nameplate stayed. It felt right. A dead man’s name on the door of the room where the living planned their survival. She mounted the datapad on Marc’s desk, the screen glowing dim and warm, their operations dashboard: day count, supply inventory, patrol maps, fabricator production queue, the Charling caste reference Eden had built. The room smelled of oiled metal and recycled air and the faintest ghost of the man who’d lived here before.

The first officer’s cabin became their sleeping quarters. Two bunks, military-standard, narrow and functional. The mattresses were preserved. Jayde tested one. Lay flat. Stared at the ceiling. The surface under her back was firmer than stone and softer than anything she’d slept on in three months. Her body, which had been sleeping on rock and chitin and the cold ground of a sealed dimension since the fortress, registered the mattress as a luxury so profound that her eyes burned.

She didn’t let herself stay. Work first.

Zhi explored the corridors with growing confidence. The serpent slithered along the decking, the small body investigating compartments with a curiosity that had no trace of the coiled terror from the cistern. Wings extended further each day, the iridescent membranes catching the handheld light. The scales had settled to a palette that was less panic and more personality: deep blues, forest greens, flashes of gold when the serpent was pleased with something it found.

[This place is good,] Zhi said through the bond. [The walls are thick. The dark is quiet. I like it here.]

”Zhi’s claiming the navigation alcove,” Eden reported, smiling. ”It’s been curling up in the sensor housing.”

The serpent had chosen a spot: a recessed alcove near the cockpit where the navigation console had been, just large enough for a coiled forearm-length body, enclosed on three sides with the kind of snug geometry that a creature who’d spent four lifetimes hiding in crevices would find irresistible. It was Zhi’s corner. The serpent returned to it after every exploration, the scales settling to deep blue, the wings folding not from fear but from comfort.

Eden claimed the Resolute’s medical bay as her secondary workspace, arranging the ring supplies on the examination tables: Green’s healing pills sorted by grade, herbal compounds, bandages, splints, suture thread. She put Isha’s birthday card on the shelf above the surgical suite. Still sealed. Still unopened. It sat there like a promise.

The Resolute’s cargo hold yielded the last find.

Jayde had been clearing the aft compartments when the handheld beam caught something that wasn’t loose equipment or transit debris. A storage crate, military-standard, bolted to the deck. The bolts were intact. The crate’s seal was unbroken. Whatever was inside had been secured for transport and never unloaded.

She broke the seal. Lifted the lid.

Inside, packed in shock-absorbing foam, was a Federation combat exoskeleton.

Not a full suit. A frame. Articulated joints, hydraulic-assist pistons, load-bearing scaffolding designed to strap onto a human body and multiply the wearer’s physical output. Military-issue. The kind of equipment that forward teams used for heavy lifting in hostile environments, or that combat engineers wore when the work required more force than unaugmented human muscle could provide. Lightweight alloy construction, modular attachment points, integrated power cells at the hip and spine.

Jayde pulled it from the crate and held it up. The frame was sized for a standard Federation build — too large for Eden’s slight frame, too narrow for a Doha cultivator’s enhanced body. But the attachment points were modular. The hydraulic pistons could be recalibrated. The power cells were independent — Zhi would need to check them, but if they ran cool-dim, the suit could operate inside the Harrowing.

Her tactical mind was already redesigning it. The fabricator could produce adjusted joint housings, resized strut lengths, customized mounting plates. One frame for Jayde — calibrated to amplify her already-enhanced strength. One for Eden — calibrated to bring the doctor’s lighter build up to combat-capable output. The hydraulics didn’t need cultivation. They needed physics. Mechanical advantage, the same principle that drove the compound crossbow.

She stored the frame in the ring. Tomorrow’s problem. Today’s was the perimeter.

[What’s that?] Zhi asked, watching from Eden’s shoulder.

”An equalizer,” Jayde said.

***

The defense perimeter was simple because the dead spot made it simple. But simple didn’t mean quick.

The boundary itself was the first line. No Charlings crossed it. Three months of observation had confirmed that nothing with chitin and sensory pits had ever entered the dead spot in any of Zhi’s lifetimes. The zero-energy field was hostile to corruption-dependent biology. The pheromone trails terminated at the edge. The colony’s navigation system couldn’t function without corruption energy to process, and the dead spot had none.

But Jayde didn’t trust a single defensive line. Federation doctrine said redundancy. The dead spot was the moat. The ship hulls were the walls. Between them, she built a warning network.

It took two days.

Tripwires at six approach vectors: Federation wire from the ring supplies, strung between debris-field wreckage at knee height, hung with fragments of hull plating that would clatter on contact. Jayde positioned each one herself, walking the approaches in the dark, testing sight lines, adjusting heights. The tripwires weren’t meant to stop anything. They were meant to announce it. If something ever crossed the dead spot boundary, if the colony adapted, if a caste they hadn’t catalogued could tolerate zero-energy, the tripwires would tell them before the hull did.

Motion sensors from the shuttle’s spare parts, repositioned at the four cardinal approaches. Passive detection, drawing from their own cells. Zhi walked the perimeter with Eden after installation, reading each sensor’s energy output. [Cool-dim,] the serpent confirmed at each one. [Small warm. Like a sleeping heartbeat. Safe.] The sensors registered vibration, heat, and movement within a thirty-meter radius. Jayde tested them by throwing debris at various distances and angles, and the pickup was clean. Not Federation-grade perimeter security. Better than anything else in the Hollows.

The final layer was the simplest: clear sight lines. Jayde spent half a day rearranging debris-field wreckage around the two ships, clearing lines of fire from the Resolute’s breach (now sealed but usable as a firing position) and the shuttle’s hatch. Anything approaching the ships would cross open ground for fifty meters in every direction. Open ground that two women with compound crossbows and Federation-alloy bolts could cover from elevated positions.

”Day eighty-six,” Eden said, updating the datapad. ”Two hundred and seventy-nine remaining.”

”Close enough to call it a quarter done.”

”Quarter survived,” Jayde said.

The perimeter held its silence. The sensors reported nothing. The tripwires hung undisturbed in the dark. The dead spot was the safest place in the Hollows, and now it was defended.

***

The fabricator changed everything.

Jayde set it up in the shuttle’s cargo bay. The fabricator plugged into the shuttle’s reactor through a power coupling she’d adapted from the maintenance kit. Zhi watched the energy levels with the focused attention of a child given a critical job.

[Cool-dim,] the serpent confirmed as the fabricator’s internal furnace heated. [Warm inside the box but not outside. Safe.]

She fed it the first alloy section. Debris-field hull plating, cut to size, loaded into the material hopper. Not from the shuttle. Not from the Resolute. From the scattered wreckage that filled the dead spot between them: anonymous Federation steel, alien composites, dimensional refuse that had been sitting here for centuries with no one to shape it.

The first component took forty minutes. A crossbow limb. Compound geometry, designed from a template Jayde had built on the datapad across two evenings of engineering work: pulley wheels at the limb tips, a cam system that stored energy through the draw cycle and provided eighty percent let-off at full draw. The cams were the key. They meant the stirrup-cocked peak force was held by the mechanism, not her arms. Physics doing the heavy lifting.

The limb emerged warm and precise. Jayde held it up to the light. The edges were clean. The pulley housings were smooth. The cam surfaces were polished to tolerances that would have taken a master bowyer a week of hand-finishing.

She assembled the first compound crossbow in an hour. Two limbs on a riser block fabricated from a separate alloy section — heavier, denser, designed to absorb the limbs’ stored energy without flexing. A rail machined to bolt-shaft diameter with a tolerance so precise that the bolt sat in its channel without rattle or play. A stirrup at the front for cocking: foot in, both hands on the string, full body-weight pull to draw. A trigger mechanism adapted from shuttle cockpit components: a sear-and-latch system that held the string at full draw and released with a two-pound pull. Smooth. Clean. The kind of release that didn’t jerk the weapon off-target the way the crude stone-wood trigger had.

The string was nerve-fiber. Charling-harvested, braided to specification. The one component the fabricator couldn’t improve on — the colony’s own biology had produced a string material that outperformed anything in the ring supplies or the debris field.

The finished weapon weighed less than the stone-wood crossbow and held far more energy. Jayde turned it in the light, checking the joints, testing the limb flex, running her fingers along the cam tracks. The engineering was clean. Every surface true. Every component mating at tolerances that hand-crafting couldn’t achieve.

She cocked it. Foot in the stirrup, both hands on the string, legs driving upward. Two hundred pounds of peak draw. Her Crucible Core was shut, her essence locked away, but the body beneath the sealed cultivation was still the body of a Grade 2 Elite. Muscle, bone, sinew — all permanently enhanced through years of advancement. A normal human would have needed a cranking mechanism for this draw weight. Jayde pulled it to the latch with her legs and arms and the enhanced frame that cultivation had built, and the Federation-alloy limbs flexed and held. The cams rolled over center, the force dropping away as the let-off engaged. The trigger caught the string with a solid click.

She lifted the crossbow to her shoulder. At full draw, aiming position, her arms held forty pounds. The cams absorbed the rest. She could hold this sight picture for minutes without fatigue, the kind of precision aiming that the crude stone-wood crossbow’s raw draw weight had never allowed.

She loaded a bolt. Federation alloy shaft, machined to six decimal places. Broadhead tip, four-bladed, each edge honed to a thickness measured in microns.

She aimed at a section of worker-caste chitin propped against the cargo bay wall. Full-thickness dorsal plate. The armor that had bounced every stone-tipped bolt she’d ever fired.

She fired.

The sound was different from the crude crossbow. A deep, mechanical thunk. The compound cams releasing their stored energy in a single controlled pulse. The bolt left the rail at a velocity her eyes couldn’t track. One instant on the weapon, the next instant through the chitin and buried six inches deep in the hull plating behind it.

The chitin plate hung on its prop with a hole through its center the diameter of her thumb. Clean edges. No cracking, no deflection. The bolt had punched through full-thickness dorsal armor as if it were paper.

The cargo bay was very quiet.

”Full plate,” Jayde said. ”Center mass. Clean through.”

Eden looked at the chitin. At the hole. At the bolt in the wall. At the compound crossbow in Jayde’s hands that had been debris-field scrap and shuttle components and nerve-fiber string that morning.

”How many can you make?”

”As many as we have material for. The debris field is full of alloy. Each bolt takes twenty minutes to machine, but the shafts are reusable if the broadhead survives impact.” She ejected the spent bolt. Checked it. Intact. The Federation alloy hadn’t deformed. ”This one fires again.”

Eden picked up the crude stone-wood crossbow they’d been using for three months. Looked at it. Looked at the compound crossbow. Set the stone-wood down.

”Make me one,” she said.

On her shoulder, Zhi’s scales had settled to a deep, steady blue. The serpent’s wings were open. The dark eyes tracked the chitin with the hole through it.

[The clicking things can’t get through that,] Zhi said. Not a question. A statement. The first statement the serpent had ever made that wasn’t about fear or safety or hiding. A statement about power.

”No,” Eden said. ”They can’t.”

[Good.] A pause. Then, quietly: [Can you make it so the clicking things are scared of us?]

Eden didn’t relay that one. She put her hand on Zhi’s back, and the scales were warm and steady, and the question sat in the air, asked by a creature that had spent four lifetimes being eaten and was, for the first time, imagining a world where the eating stopped.

The fabricator hummed. Jayde fed it the next alloy section. The second crossbow would take two hours. Then bolts — twenty minutes each, machined to six decimal places, reusable if the broadhead survived impact. Then a third crossbow, because two was one and one was none.

But the crossbows were just the beginning. The production queue on the datapad ran to forty-three items, and that was before she’d added the exoskeleton modifications. A siege bow for heavy targets — hands and feet to cock, devastating single-shot, three or four pre-loaded in the ring. A repeating crossbow with a magazine feed — twelve bolts, semi-automatic, cock once and fire twelve times. A lighter model for Eden. Hundreds of bolts in standardized quivers. And the exoskeleton — two frames, customized, hydraulic-amplified strength for both of them.

The crude stone-wood crossbow went on a shelf in the command post. Not discarded. Archived. The weapon that had kept them alive for three months of stone-tipped bolts and nerve-fiber string and kill zones built from rubble and geometry, retired to remind them what they’d started with.

Day eighty-six. Two hundred and seventy-nine remaining.

The Resolute held its ground in the dead spot, dark and sealed, the barracks. The shuttle hummed beside it, reactor ticking, fabricator running, the workshop. Between them, a perimeter of tripwires and motion sensors strung through the wreckage of a civilization that had died between the stars.

Inside, two women and a winged serpent had a fabricator, a debris field full of raw material, an exoskeleton frame, and two hundred and seventy-nine days to build an arsenal.

The work went on.
