Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 456: Chapter 451: The Captain’s Ship

Location:Mid Ring, Vel’thari Containment — Dead Spot, Federation Debris Field

Date/Time:Early Ashwhisper, 9941 AZI — Month 3 of the Harrowing

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The grid search started at dawn — or what passed for dawn in a place without light.

Jayde had marked the dead spot’s boundaries by pace count and compass bearing the day before, mapping the zone’s perimeter while Eden catalogued the initial wreckage finds. The dead spot was roughly circular, nearly a kilometer across, and the debris field sat at its center in a dense scatter that thinned toward the edges. She divided the field into thirty-meter squares, scratching the grid markers into the stone floor with a chisel from the ring supplies, and started at the northeast corner.

Federation efficiency. The kind of work that used to be done by survey teams with scanners and drones and a dozen specialists. Here it was two women, a fire-kit, and a serpent who kept nosing into crevices in the wreckage with the cautious curiosity of a child exploring a room it hadn’t been allowed in before.

Zhi had changed since they’d entered the dead zone. The serpent moved differently, the coils around Eden’s forearm looser, the wings lifting from the flanks in small experimental unfurlings that lasted a few seconds before folding back. In the dead spot, with no divine signature pressing fear into its bones and no clicking echoing through the stone, the creature was discovering something it had never had in any of its lives inside the seal: room.

[Old things,] Zhi said through the bond, and Eden relayed while she worked. [Old things from the warm-bright place. Before the clicking. Before the dark-egg. From when the quiet place was the whole world.]

”Zhi says the debris has been here since before the seal closed,” Eden translated. ”From when the dead spot was part of a larger system. Before the colony claimed the rest of the basin.”

Jayde filed it. The dead spot predated the seal. The wreckage predated both. How long had this material been sitting here?

She worked the grid. Triage categories, Federation standard: functional, repairable, salvage-only, scrap. Most of it was scrap. Corroded hull plating, buckled structural members, fragments too small or too damaged to identify. But the salvage pile grew. Wire. Intact conduit sections. A panel with functional-looking circuitry beneath a layer of corrosion that Jayde could clean. Several lengths of structural alloy that would make better bolt shafts than anything she could knap from stone.

The ship found her at the end of the second grid row.

Not the scattered debris she’d been cataloguing, the violent-dispersal fragments from whatever had torn things apart on entry. This was intact. A HULL. Rising from the dead-spot floor at an angle, half-buried in stone that had shifted around it across centuries of settling, the dorsal surface exposed to the air and the ventral hull locked in the ground like a tooth in a jaw.

Large. Transport class or bigger. The hull configuration was wrong for standard Federation design, and it took Jayde three heartbeats to understand why: the modifications. Stealth plating bonded to the outer hull in overlapping sections, non-standard sensor arrays grafted to the dorsal ridge, hull reinforcement at the stress points where standard construction would never have needed it because standard construction wasn’t designed to run from Federation pursuit ships.

Rebel fleet.

Her hands stopped moving.

She knew this ship. Not this specific vessel, maybe, but this CLASS. Modified transport, fast for its size, built for running and carrying and disappearing into sensor-blind zones where the Federation’s pursuit teams couldn’t follow. The rebellion had operated a dozen of these. She’d stood on the bridge of three of them. She’d signed the modification orders for most.

The designation markings were on the port side, half-buried but readable where the stone hadn’t covered them. Jayde crouched. Brushed corrosion away with her sleeve. The letters emerged.

RFS-217 Resolute.

Her breath left her.

”Commander?” Eden’s voice, behind her.

”I know this ship.”

***

The hull breach was on the starboard side, a rupture in the plating where something had torn through from outside with enough force to peel the steel back like a wound. Whatever had hit the Resolute had hit it hard. But the breach was above the waterline, so to speak, and the interior compartments beyond it had sealed automatically when the hull lost integrity. Federation failsafes. The kind of redundant engineering that kept a crew alive long enough to die of something else.

Jayde climbed through the breach. Eden followed. Zhi’s scales cycled once at the transition from open air to enclosed space, then settled.

Inside, the Resolute was a tomb.

The corridors were intact. Narrow, functional, built for traffic not comfort. Emergency lighting had failed centuries ago, the chemical backup cells long since exhausted, and the fire-kit’s circle of light moved through the passages like a heartbeat, illuminating a few meters of corridor before letting the dark close behind. The floor was level — the ship had settled at an angle, but the corridor compensated. Jayde’s boots on the decking made a sound she hadn’t heard in this life: the hollow ring of military-grade floor plating under a standard-issue stride. Her feet knew the layout. Not this ship. This class. Left at the first junction, right at the second, down the companionway to the officers’ deck.

The air was dead. Not stale — dead. The dead spot’s zero-energy field had preserved the interior as it preserved everything else: no bacteria, no oxidation beyond the initial damage, no biological degradation. The Resolute’s corridors looked like the crew had left yesterday and the lights had just gone out.

They hadn’t left. The crew quarters she passed were empty, the bunks made, the personal lockers sealed. Whatever had happened when the ship came through from the other side, the crew had either been thrown clear or had never made it to this dimension in their bodies. The ship had arrived. The people inside it hadn’t.

The captain’s quarters were at the end of the officers’ corridor.

The nameplate on the door was standard issue. Brushed alloy, machine-engraved. The letters were clear.

CPT. MARCUS ALDRIDGE

Jayde put her hand on the nameplate. The metal was cold. Dead-spot cold. The kind of cold that had nothing on the other side of it.

Marc.

She pressed the door release. The mechanism was mechanical, not electronic, and it still functioned. The door slid open on tracks that hadn’t corroded because there was nothing in the air to corrode them.

The captain’s quarters of a rebel transport were not luxurious. A bunk. A desk. A locker. A shelf with personal effects secured behind a rail. The desk had a terminal — dark, unpowered, the screen a flat gray rectangle that reflected the firelight. Beside the terminal, a stack of physical log books. Marc had kept paper logs alongside the digital ones. She remembered that about him. ”If the power goes, Commander, the words stay.”

She opened the top log. The handwriting was his. Blocky. Confident. The kind of handwriting that belonged to a man who wrote the way he spoke: directly, without flourish, saying what needed saying and moving on.

The last entries were brief.

Day 47 in the Shroud. Sensor array non-functional since Day 3. Navigating by dead reckoning and prayer, and I’ve never been much for prayer. Dimensional readings spiking — if the equipment’s working, which I doubt. Something pulling at the hull. Not gravity. Not tidal. Something else.

Day 48. Hull stress alarms triggered. Structural integrity at 84%. The pulling is directional. We’re being drawn toward something the sensors can’t image. I’ve ordered full reverse thrust. Doesn’t seem to matter.

Day 49. Breach. Starboard compartment sealed. No casualties. Crew accounted for. The pulling has stopped. We’re... somewhere. The stars are wrong. All of them. Wrong constellations, wrong positions, wrong COLORS. Navigation cannot fix position because there are no known reference points. Wherever we are, it isn’t where we were.

Day 50. I am recording this for whoever finds us. The ship is intact. The crew is intact. We’re going to keep being intact for as long as physics allows, because that’s the job and I’m not done doing it.

Marcus Aldridge, Captain, RFS-217 Resolute. If Commander Centauri reads this: I still owe you that drink.

The log ended there. The next page was blank. Whatever had happened after Day 50, Marc hadn’t recorded it. Or hadn’t had time.

Jayde closed the log. Held it in both hands. The paper was crisp, preserved perfectly in the dead air, and Marc’s handwriting looked like he’d written it an hour ago.

She set the log on the desk. Turned to the shelf.

Personal effects. A holo-frame, unpowered, the image inside it preserved behind glass. A younger Marc, grinning, arm around a woman Jayde didn’t recognize. Civvies. Shore leave, maybe. A life outside the war that he’d had and she hadn’t, because Jayde hadn’t had a life outside the war since the day she’d decided to start one.

A pocket knife with his initials engraved on the handle. A tin of the mints he’d been addicted to. A book — paper, not digital — with a cracked spine and a title she couldn’t read in the firelight.

And the display case.

It was mounted on the wall opposite the bunk, secured behind tempered glass that the centuries hadn’t cracked. Inside: six weapons. Antique projectile weapons from various Federation eras, arranged chronologically. Pre-spaceflight to early colonial. Handguns, rifles, things that fired shaped metal through a tube using controlled chemical explosions.

Marc’s hobby. His ridiculous, impractical, deeply personal passion for the weapons that physics had built before the power cells came along. She remembered him talking about them in the mess hall, hands moving, eyes bright, the kind of enthusiasm that made everyone around him smile even if they didn’t care about ballistics. ”You know what I love about these, Commander? No power cells. No targeting computers. Just physics. You point it. You pull the trigger. And physics does the rest.”

Jayde broke the glass.

She picked up the rifle. Third from the left. Colonial era, old enough that the wood stock had darkened to near-black and the metal had developed a patina that decades of careful preservation hadn’t fully prevented. Wood stock, metal barrel, a simple bolt-action mechanism that she could disassemble by touch. She’d never fired one. She knew how they worked. Every officer knew the history: before power cells, before energy weapons, before targeting arrays that could track a target across a vacuum, there had been this. A tube. A propellant. A piece of shaped metal. Point, ignite, accelerate. Physics.

She held the rifle and looked at it with sixty years of Federation engineering training and two months of fighting Charlings with crossbows and stone-tipped bolts, and something clicked in her mind that was not a sound but a connection.

On Doha, cultivators fought with essence. Essence attacks, essence defenses. Every ward, every shield, every defensive formation was designed to counter magical threats. To absorb or deflect ESSENCE.

A physical projectile at sufficient velocity wasn’t essence.

It was mass. Acceleration. Physics. The same physics that had built this rifle and every weapon Marc had collected. A piece of metal moving fast enough didn’t need to be magical to kill. It needed to be moving. And a ward designed to stop essence would engage against essence. A piece of metal, moving at velocity, carrying no magical signature at all, would pass through the ward the way a stone passed through smoke.

The wards wouldn’t even engage.

Jayde held the rifle and didn’t move for a long time. The idea sat in her mind, vast and simple and world-changing, and she let it sit, because this was a seed, not a plan, and seeds needed time to grow roots before they could hold weight.

She set the rifle back in the case. Took the entire case off the wall. Stored it in the ring.

Then the logs. Then the holo-frame. Then the pocket knife, the mints, the book. Everything. Every trace of Marcus Aldridge that the dead spot had preserved across centuries of patient, lightless waiting.

She’d carry her friend home. Wherever home turned out to be. It was the least she owed a man who’d saved her life and warned her about the thing that eventually ended it.

***

Eden found her in the corridor.

The doctor’s eyes were red. Not from crying — from recognition. She’d been in the medical bay.

”Equipment’s intact,” Eden said. Her voice was steady in the way that meant it was costing her something to keep it that way. ”Surgical suite. Diagnostic array. Pharmaceutical storage — sealed, preserved, centuries of Federation medical technology sitting in cases I could open with my thumbprint if the biometric locks still had power.” She paused. ”My hands knew where everything was. I walked in and reached for the surgical tray, and it was exactly where it should have been. I haven’t been in a Federation medical bay in—”

She stopped. Breathed.

On her arm, Zhi pressed against her wrist. [Sad again,] the serpent said through the bond, quiet now, sensing the weight. [Both sad again. But different sad. Not the scared-sad. The remembering-sad.]

”The captain,” Eden said. ”Did you find—”

”Marcus Aldridge. Captain of the Resolute. One of the first to defect.” Jayde’s voice was level. Flat. The voice she used when the thing she was saying was too heavy for inflection. ”He went into the Shroud on a reconnaissance run. Never came back. I carried the question for the rest of my life.”

She looked at the corridor around them. The military-grade decking. The sealed compartment doors. The dead emergency lights. A ship that had been built to run from the Federation’s hunters and had instead been swallowed by a dimensional fracture and deposited on the floor of an alien world.

”The ship came through,” Jayde said. ”The crew didn’t. Or if they did, they didn’t survive the transit.” She touched the corridor wall. The metal was cold and familiar. ”I’ve got his logs. His personal effects. He kept recording until the end. The last entry mentions my name.”

Eden didn’t speak. She stepped forward and put her hand on Jayde’s shoulder. Brief. Firm. The touch of a woman who had watched the recording of this same commander triggering her dead-man’s switch and smiling and had spent fifty years building a time machine to undo it. They both knew what it meant to carry the dead.

Jayde put her hand over Eden’s. Held it for one breath. Let go.

”We work,” Jayde said. ”The debris field won’t catalogue itself. The medical bay needs a full inventory. And somewhere in this ship there might be a power cell that still holds a charge.”

She turned and walked toward the breach. Behind her, Eden followed, and Zhi’s scales caught the firelight in steady blues and greens, and the Resolute held its silence around them like a memorial that had been waiting for someone who understood what it was.

They had work to do. Marc would have approved.
