Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 490: Chapter 485: Before the Storm

Location:Outer Ring — Main Fort / Mid Ring — Trap Operations

Date/Time:Infernorest–Cinderfall 9942, AZI — Day 265-280

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The traps went in ahead of the column.

Jayde led the teams herself. Thirty engineers — the best fabricators, the steadiest hands, the students who could work in absolute silence in tunnels where the vibration of the approaching army was a constant, low-frequency reminder that time was measured in days, not weeks. They moved on the mantis’s schedule: sprint ahead of the column’s projected position, build the trap, fall back before the vanguard’s sensory range overlapped with the work site.

The first collapse went in on Day 265. A chokepoint where the main tunnel narrowed from forty meters to fifteen — the kind of bottleneck that had slowed the column for hours during Jayde’s shadowing run. Her engineers drilled into the ceiling’s load-bearing seams, inserted fabricator-produced charges that would fracture the stone along its natural fault lines, and wired the trigger to a pressure plate buried beneath the tunnel floor. When the first Siegebreaker’s weight hit the plate, the ceiling would come down on everything beneath it.

They built seven collapses in the first week. Each one positioned at a bottleneck the column couldn’t bypass. Each one calibrated to drop enough stone to kill or cripple whatever was underneath without sealing the tunnel permanently — the column needed to keep advancing. If it stopped, if it found another route, the remaining traps downstream would be wasted. The goal wasn’t to block the army. It was to bleed it.

Pheromone confusion zones went in between the collapses. Concentrated disruptor compound applied to the tunnel walls in bands that would scramble Chorus coordination frequencies. A Chorus cluster passing through the zone would lose contact with its section for thirty to sixty seconds. In that window, the organisms in that section would revert to base-caste instinct — milling, directionless, vulnerable. The sections behind would stack up. The sections ahead would advance without coordination. The army’s twelve-section formation would fragment into pieces that had to reassemble before they could fight as a unit.

Spike pits in the wider passages. Alloy stakes machined by the fabricator, embedded in false floors that the base-caste organisms would fall through by weight. Not deep enough to kill Praetorians. Deep enough to kill Ravagers. Deep enough to slow everything.

Deadfall positions where the tunnel roof was thin. Fabricated alloy beams jammed into cracks at angles that would hold until the vibration of a passing column shook them free. When they fell, they fell on whatever was beneath them.

The trap teams worked in shifts. Build, fall back, rest, build again. The mantis carried Jayde between sites at speeds the column couldn’t match. She was everywhere — inspecting charges, adjusting trigger sensitivities, redesigning trap layouts when the tunnel geometry didn’t match the map data. The engineers followed her lead with the specific, focused energy of people who understood that every trap they built was a life saved at the perimeter.

By Day 275, the Mid Ring gauntlet was operational. Nineteen traps across twelve kilometers of tunnel. Seven collapses. Four pheromone zones. Five spike pits. Three deadfall positions. Each one waiting in the dark for an army that was ten days from reaching the first trigger.

The mantis brought her back to the main fort on Day 278.

The base was quiet. The manic energy of the preparation weeks had settled into something steadier — the focused, measured rhythm of soldiers who’d been drilled to readiness and were now waiting. Crossbow teams ran maintenance on their weapons. Shield walls practiced formation shifts. The ballista crews tested their crank mechanisms one more time. Everything that could be prepared had been prepared.

The waiting was the hardest part. Jayde knew that from another life. The hours before combat were when the mind turned inward, when the fear that training held at bay crept back through the cracks, when the body remembered that it was flesh and the flesh remembered that it could break.

She walked the perimeter at dusk. Checked every position. Spoke to every squad leader. Not tactical conversations — human ones. Names. Hometowns. The families waiting above the seal. The specific, individual reasons that each of these people was willing to stand in a tunnel and fire a crossbow at something that wanted to eat the world.

She learned their names. All of them. Because a commander who didn’t know the names of the people she was about to spend wasn’t a commander. She was an accountant.

Eden found her at midnight.

The command chamber was empty. The map projection glowed on the table — the trap positions marked in yellow, the army’s projected path marked in red, the six bases marked in blue. Jayde sat at the table with the helmet beside her, the visor dark, her hands wrapped around a cup of something warm that she hadn’t drunk.

Eden sat across from her. Blue eyes. The doctor’s face, stripped of its clinical mask by the hour and the emptiness and the specific intimacy of two people who’d shared a past life and were about to share a battle.

”You haven’t slept,” Eden said.

”I’ve been running the numbers.”

”And?”

Jayde looked at the map. The red line. The blue bases. The yellow traps. The sixteen hundred names she’d learned over the past two weeks, each one attached to a face, a hometown, a family.

”The traps will work. The kill corridors will work. The ballistas and the siege lances will work. The training is good. The positions are strong.” She paused. ”And it’s not going to be enough to stop all of them. The numbers are too large. Even after the traps, even after the corridors, the army will still have enough mass to reach the inner defenses. When it does, people are going to die.”

”How many?”

”I don’t know. Depends on how many Siegebreakers the traps kill. Depends on how the Chorus coordinates after the pheromone zones. Depends on a hundred variables I can’t control.” She looked at the cup in her hands. ”Two hundred. Maybe three hundred. Maybe more. Out of sixteen hundred, I’m going to lose at least two hundred people. And those are the optimistic numbers.”

The silence between them held the weight of that calculation. Two hundred people. Two hundred names. Two hundred families who’d never see their children walk out of the Harrowing.

”I’ve been here before,” Jayde said quietly. ”Not here. But here. Standing in a command center the night before a battle that I knew was going to cost more than I could afford. Running the numbers and knowing the numbers were going to include people I’d trained, people I’d talked to, people whose names I’d learned because I thought knowing their names was the least I owed them.”

Eden watched her. The blue eyes steady.

”It doesn’t get easier,” Jayde said. ”You’d think sixty years of it would make it easier. It doesn’t. Every name is a name. Every face is a face. The numbers are abstractions until the battle starts, and then they’re not numbers anymore. They’re the person who stood in the third shield pocket on the left side of the primary approach and caught a mandible through the chest because the shield wall broke for two seconds and two seconds was enough.”

Her hands tightened on the cup. Her voice stayed level. The Commander’s control, holding the woman’s grief in place through discipline and practice and the knowledge that falling apart was a luxury she couldn’t afford.

”The odds are terrible, Doc. The army is larger than anything my defenses were designed for. The Praetorians alone could break the primary approach if the siege lances miss. The carriers only need a handful to reach the seal. One thing goes wrong — one corridor fails, one barrier drops at the wrong moment, one company breaks — and the whole defense folds.”

Eden let the silence hold for a moment. Then she spoke.

”I watched you take on the Federation.”

Jayde looked up.

”I watched you take on the largest military organization in human history. A fleet that could crack planets. Technology that made the fabricator look like a child’s toy. Generals who’d been winning wars since before most civilizations existed.” Eden’s blue eyes held Jayde’s brown ones. ”You were outgunned. Outmanned. Outmatched by every metric that mattered. The odds weren’t terrible. The odds were impossible.”

”That was different.”

”It was exactly the same. You stood in a room full of people who were terrified, and you gave them a plan, and they followed you because the plan was good and because you were the person holding it. The Federation had numbers. You had preparation and people who believed in what they were fighting for.” Eden paused. ”The Charlings have numbers. You have preparation and sixteen hundred soldiers who will hold the line because you taught them what they’re holding it for.”

Jayde stared at the map. The red line. The blue bases. The yellow traps in between.

”I lost people against the Federation too,” she said.

”Yes. And you won. Because you’re the best commander I’ve ever served with, and I spent sixty years serving with commanders.” Eden leaned forward. ”You’ve already done the impossible, Jayde. You built an army out of starving students. You armed them with weapons that don’t exist on this world. You designed defenses that would make a Federation military engineer weep with envy. You rode a Charling into a fort and took command from an instructor twice your apparent age because the alternative was letting eighteen hundred people die.”

Eden’s voice softened. Not with pity. With certainty.

”If anyone in this containment can win this fight, it’s you. Not because you’re the strongest. Because you’re the one who plans for everything, prepares for everything, and refuses to accept that the odds define the outcome.” She paused. ”Two hundred casualties is a number you’ve calculated. It’s not a number you’ve accepted. And you won’t accept it. You’ll find a way to make it smaller. You always do.”

Jayde sat with that. The cup was cold in her hands. The map glowed. The silence held.

”Thank you,” she said.

Eden stood. ”Get some sleep. The Commander needs to be sharp when the advance elements arrive.”

”Doc.”

The doctor paused at the doorway.

”Whatever happens in the battle, I need you behind the line. Not in it. The medical stations need you alive more than the crossbow teams do.”

”I know.”

”Promise me.”

Eden’s blue eyes held something that was not clinical, not analytical, not the doctor’s careful distance. Something older. The look of a woman who had followed another woman into impossible odds once before and had no intention of stopping now.

”I promise,” Eden said. ”Now sleep.”

She left. The command chamber was empty again. Jayde looked at the map one more time. The red line. Coming closer every hour.

She turned off the projection. Set the cup down. Lay on the cot in the corner of the command chamber where she’d been sleeping for weeks.

The mantis pressed its head-plate against her hand from its position on the floor. Warm. Steady. The wordless reassurance of a creature that didn’t understand the numbers or the names but understood the woman and would stay beside her regardless.

Jayde closed her eyes. Tomorrow the advance elements would be one day closer. The day after, closer still. The war was coming. The cost was coming. And somewhere between the numbers and the names, the Commander who’d beaten the Federation would have to find a way to beat this too.

She slept. The mantis watched. The stone hummed.
