Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 486: Chapter 481: The Forge

Location:Outer Ring, Vel’thari Containment — Protection Base One (Main Fort)

Date/Time:Cinderfall, 9942 AZI — Day 190-205, 175-160 days remaining

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The fabricator ran day and night.

Zhong had asked about it. Of course he had. An Entry Inferno-tempered combat instructor didn’t watch an unknown machine produce precision metal components without questions.

”I found two ships in the Mid Ring,” Jayde told him. ”In what I call a dead zone — a natural void in the corruption energy field. A pocket where the Nytharak’s radiation drops to nearly nothing. Charlings avoid it because their sensory architecture can’t function in the absence of corruption. I used it as a base for six months. No Charling ever entered it.”

Zhong processed that. ”An area the Charlings can’t go?”

”Can’t or won’t. The dead zone was created by an old dimensional tear — the kind that happens when something punches through from one dimension to another. The tear has mended, but it left a scar on the area. The corruption energy can’t settle there properly. It’s healing slowly. Eventually the dead zone will close, and the Charlings will reclaim that territory.” She paused. ”The ships came through the tear. From where, I don’t know. They were damaged. Dead. But the technology inside them was intact enough to study. I spent months pulling them apart, learning how the components worked, figuring out what I could use.”

”And the rest?”

”I stripped everything. Both ships. Every piece of metal, every component, every wire. It’s all in our rings. There’s nothing left to go back for.”

Zhong accepted it the way a pragmatist accepts anything that produces weapons during a crisis: with a nod and a deliberate decision not to examine the gift too closely.

The fabricator wasn’t elegant. It was a blocky, utilitarian machine that hummed at a frequency the students found unsettling and produced components at a rate the students found miraculous.

The fabricator changed everything.

The machine wasn’t built for artisan production. It was built for war. Feed it raw alloy, specify the component, and it produced hundreds per hour — identical, precision-machined, ready for assembly. Crossbow receivers in batches of two hundred. Trigger mechanisms by the crate. Bolt heads by the thousand.

Jayde designed three weapon classes.

Light crossbows first. The standard design she’d been building since the dead spot — two-hundred-pound draw, single-bolt, twenty-meter effective range. The weapon every student would carry. Simple enough to learn in a day. The fabricator produced enough components for two hundred per day. Four assembly lines of thirty students each, running in shifts, assembled them. Within ten days: over two thousand light crossbows racked along the cavern walls.

Heavy crossbows next. Three-hundred-pound draw. Reinforced frame. Designed for Siegebreaker chitin — the dense, black armor that light bolts couldn’t penetrate. The heavy crossbow’s bolt was longer, thicker, machined with a hardened tip that concentrated kinetic energy into a point the width of a fingernail. Effective range: thirty meters. One shot could crack a Siegebreaker’s dorsal plate. Two in the same spot could punch through. Slower to reload because the heavier draw weight required a stirrup brace. One per squad. Three hundred and twenty produced.

Ballistas. Eight of them, not three. Mounted siege crossbows scaled to a size that required bolted-down frames and two-person crank mechanisms. The coiled alloy springs stored enough kinetic energy to launch a forearm-length bolt through a Praetorian’s cathedral-layered chitin at eighty meters. Each ballista positioned at a primary approach, covering the kill corridors with firepower that no Charling caste could shrug off.

And the siege lances.

Jayde designed them on the third night, working from the fabricator’s maximum output capacity and the question that had been sitting at the back of her mind since she’d seen the Praetorians in the Inner Ring: what kills something the size of an elephant with chitin layered like a cathedral?

The answer was kinetic energy. Massive, concentrated, delivered at velocities that turned physical armor into a liability. The siege lances were single-use weapons — alloy tubes packed with compressed essence-springs that released their stored energy in a single, devastating pulse. The projectile: a solid alloy rod, half a meter long, machined to aerodynamic tolerances the fabricator could achieve but no human smith could match. At full discharge, the rod traveled fast enough that the impact point didn’t crack the chitin. It vaporized it.

Twenty-four siege lances. Positioned at the final defensive line. The weapons of last resort, designed for the things that got past everything else.

Bolts. Thousands of them. The fabricator ran through the night producing ammunition — light bolts, heavy bolts, ballista bolts, packaged in quivers of twenty, distributed to every squad, cached at every firing position. Enough ammunition for sustained combat across multiple engagements. If they ran out of bolts before the horde ran out of bodies, the math had failed. Jayde intended the math not to fail.

The main fort’s largest cavern had become an arsenal. Racks of crossbows. Crates of bolts. Ballista frames bolted to the stone. Siege lances in their charging cradles. Shields stacked against the walls — curved alloy plates with reinforced grips, one per soldier, designed to absorb mandible strikes and Siegebreaker spray.

Sixteen hundred students looked at what the fabricator had produced and understood, for the first time, that the strange machine’s humming had been the sound of survival being manufactured.

But weapons without protection were half an army. Jayde designed armor next.

Not full plate. There wasn’t enough alloy or time for that. Chest guards: curved alloy breastplates that covered the torso from collarbone to navel. Light enough to move in. Hard enough to turn a Ravager’s mandible strike from a killing blow to a bruise. Shoulder caps for the crossbow arm, protecting the joint that mattered most. Shin guards, because Scythlings attacked low.

The fabricator produced armor components alongside weapon parts. Students who weren’t on assembly lines or training drills worked the armor fitting stations, adjusting breastplates to individual measurements, securing straps, testing range of motion. By the end of the second week, every soldier had a crossbow, a shield, and chest armor.

The shields were Jayde’s simplest design and her most important. Curved alloy plates, waist-height, with reinforced grips and a ground-spike that let a soldier plant the shield and fire over it. A shield wall of five could block a tunnel passage. A shield wall of twenty could hold a junction. The curve deflected mandible strikes outward rather than absorbing them head-on, which meant the soldier behind the shield stayed standing instead of being driven back by the impact.

Fortification was the other half of defense.

The tunnel walls in the kill corridors were reinforced with alloy bracing — fabricator-produced struts anchored into the stone at stress points, preventing the Siegebreakers’ bombardier spray from weakening the structural integrity. Where natural stone was too thin, Jayde had students build layered barricades: stone rubble packed behind alloy sheeting, creating walls that could absorb repeated impacts without collapsing.

The tunnel ceilings received attention too. The ceiling-drop tactic that Ravagers had used in the Mid Ring would be used here. Jayde was certain of it. Alloy mesh was fabricated in panels and bolted to the ceiling above every firing position, creating a barrier that any ceiling-crawling Charling would have to break through before dropping onto the soldiers below. The mesh wouldn’t stop a Praetorian. It would stop everything smaller. Three seconds of warning against a ceiling attack was the difference between a firing line and a massacre.

Every base entrance. Every junction. Every approach corridor. Reinforced. Armored. Layered. The tunnel network that had been carved by Charling mandibles for millennia was being reshaped into something the horde had never encountered: a killing ground that fought back.

Training happened in the tunnels.

Jayde couldn’t train sixteen hundred students in a cavern. She trained them in the environment they’d be fighting in — the Outer Ring tunnel network that connected the six protection bases, the passages and junctions and chokepoints that would become the battlefield when the horde arrived.

The organization came from another life.

Companies of one hundred. Four per base, loosely — the exact distribution shifted as students arrived from the outlying positions. Each company divided into four platoons of twenty-five. Each platoon divided into five squads of five. The terminology was foreign to the students — they’d never heard the words platoon or squad — but the structure was intuitive. Small groups inside bigger groups inside bigger groups. Each level with a leader. Each leader answerable to the one above.

Squad leaders trained platoon leaders. Platoon leaders trained company commanders. The military structure cascaded downward through the chain, each level teaching the one below, each level learning from the one above. Within a week, students who’d never held a rank were directing formations with the confidence of people who’d been doing it for years. The structure was that good. It had been refined over decades of warfare that none of them would ever know about, and it worked because it was designed to work for exactly this: ordinary people, under pressure, needing to function as a unit.

Meifen commanded First Company. The Grade 5 woman who’d been Jayde’s first real student took the position with the quiet competence of someone who’d been preparing for this role since the day she’d learned to fire a crossbow. Her hazel eyes missed nothing. Her voice carried the flat, calm authority that she’d absorbed from Jayde without either of them noticing the transfer.

The original seven — Jayde’s first students from the dead spot — became the NCO corps. Seven squad leaders who’d been training longer than anyone else, who’d fought Ravagers in the Mid Ring, who’d walked past a mantis without flinching. They taught the way they’d been taught: by demonstration, by repetition, by the specific, relentless patience of people who understood that the difference between a trained soldier and a dead student was the number of times they’d practiced loading a crossbow until the motion lived in their muscles.

The new students learned fast. Not because they were talented, though many were. Because they understood what they were fighting for.

Jayde told them. Not gently. Not gradually. She played the recording crystal in the first briefing for every new company: the Inner Ring staging area, the army assembling, the Siegebreakers and Praetorians and the corruption-solvent carriers aimed at the seal.

Then she told them what it meant.

”If we fail, the seal breaks. Every Charling in this containment pours into the Lower Realm. Your families. Your friends. Your villages, your cities, your Academy. Everything above us dies. Not because they’ll be conquered. Because they’ll be consumed. The Charlings don’t negotiate. They don’t enslave. They eat. They eat until there’s nothing left, and then they starve. The Lower Realm becomes a dead world.”

The silence after that briefing was always the same. The specific, heavy silence of people understanding that their survival was no longer personal. The person beside them mattered. The formation mattered. The crossbow in their hands was the only thing standing between the horde and everyone they’d ever loved.

Zhong had watched the first briefing from the back of the chamber. Afterward, he’d found Jayde.

”You told them the truth.”

”They deserve to know what they’re holding.”

”Some of them are terrified.”

”Good. Terrified people train harder than comfortable ones. And when the horde comes, they won’t run. Because running means their families die.” She looked at him. ”They’re not students anymore, Instructor Zhong. They’re the last line of defense. The sooner they believe that, the better they’ll fight.”

Zhong looked at his students. At the hollow-eyed young cultivators who’d walked into the briefing as survivors and walked out as soldiers who understood that the weight on their shoulders extended beyond the tunnels they stood in. Beyond the seal. Beyond the mountain. To every living thing on the surface of Doha.

”By the flames,” he said quietly. ”You’re right.”

The crossbow stopped being a strange weapon. It became the only thing that mattered.

Kill zones.

Jayde walked the tunnel network with Zhong and Shenwei, mapping every junction, every chokepoint, every passage where the geometry favored defenders over attackers. The main fort’s primary approaches — three tunnels converging on the central cavern — were obvious defensive positions. Jayde redesigned them.

The approach tunnels were widened at specific intervals, creating firing pockets where crossbow teams could position behind shield walls and fire into the approach corridor. The pockets were staggered — left side, right side, left side — so that an advancing horde would face crossfire from alternating positions along the entire length of the tunnel. Each pocket held one squad. Five crossbows. Five shields. One ballista at the tunnel’s terminus, positioned to fire directly down the approach corridor into the densest concentration of incoming chitin.

Pheromone barriers at the tunnel entrances. The disruptor compound that Jayde had developed in the Mid Ring, scaled up, applied to the stone walls in bands that would scramble any Charling sensory architecture that passed through them. A Ravager hitting the barrier would lose coordinated pack behavior for three to five seconds. In a crossbow kill zone, three seconds meant two volleys. Five seconds meant three.

Formation barriers at the chokepoints. Not the student-maintained essence walls that the protection bases had been using — those drained the cultivators who held them and failed when the cultivator’s essence ran dry. Jayde’s design used formation-inscribed stone anchored to the tunnel architecture itself, drawing ambient essence from the environment rather than from the students behind them. The barriers held without cultivation support. They could be raised or lowered by a single operator touching the anchor-stone. Up when the horde pushed forward. Down when the crossbow teams needed clear firing lines. Up again when the teams reloaded.

The main fort’s tunnel network became a layered defense. Outer barriers. Pheromone zones. Kill corridors with staggered crossbow pockets. Ballista positions. Inner barriers. Each layer designed to bleed the horde’s numbers before the next layer engaged.

Zhong watched the construction for three days before he spoke.

”I’ve been teaching combat for fifteen years,” the instructor said. His dark brown eyes held the specific expression of a man revising his understanding of what combat meant. ”I’ve never seen anything like this.”

”You’ve never needed anything like this,” Jayde said. ”Cultivation is powerful enough for the enemies you’ve faced. The enemies coming now are too numerous for power alone. They need to be managed. Channeled. Bled. Every layer of this defense reduces their numbers before the next layer has to fight. By the time the horde reaches the inner cavern, they should be a fraction of what they started.”

”Should be.”

”War doesn’t deal in certainties. It deals in preparations. We prepare for everything we can and fight what gets through.”

Zhong looked at her. The Entry Inferno-tempered instructor, who had kept four hundred students alive for six months on cultivation and courage alone, looking at a Grade 2 student who spoke about war like someone who’d been fighting one for decades.

”Where did you learn this?” he asked.

Jayde didn’t answer. Some questions were better left without answers. Some answers would raise more questions than they resolved. And some truths belonged to a life that nobody in this tunnel would ever know about.

”It works,” she said instead. ”That’s what matters.”

Zhong looked at the kill corridor. At the shield pockets. At the ballista. At the girl who’d designed all of it. Then he nodded. The nod of a man who’d decided that understanding the source mattered less than surviving the result.

Day 205. One hundred and sixty days remaining.

Two thousand crossbows. Three hundred heavy crossbows. Eight ballistas. Twenty-four siege lances positioned at the primary approaches. Kill zones operational across every defended tunnel. Pheromone barriers installed. Formation barriers tested and functional. Medical stations established at each base, staffed by healers trained on Eden’s protocols.

Meifen’s First Company could deploy from rest to firing positions in under four minutes. The other companies were slower — seven minutes, nine — but improving daily. The drill continued. Every day. Every shift. Load. Aim. Fire. Reload. The rhythm of survival beaten into sixteen hundred bodies until the muscles remembered what the minds were too frightened to trust.

The students who’d arrived hollow-eyed and starving three weeks ago were unrecognizable. Not because they’d gained weight or recovered their cultivation reserves — though many had. Because they stood differently. Moved differently. Held their crossbows with the specific, casual familiarity of people who’d been drilled until the weapon was an extension of their arm rather than a tool in their hand. They walked the kill corridors without flinching. They passed the mantis at the main fort’s entrance without breaking stride.

They were soldiers. Not cultivators playing at warfare. Soldiers.

Jayde stood at the main fort’s primary approach and looked down the kill corridor. Two hundred meters of tunnel, redesigned into a gauntlet. Shield pockets. Crossbow positions. Ballista at the terminus. Pheromone barriers at the entrance. Formation walls at the chokepoints.

The horde would come. The horde would enter this tunnel. And the tunnel would eat it.

She pressed her palm against the mantis’s head-plate. The creature stood beside her, blade-arms folded, sensory pits reading the southern tunnels for the first vibrations of what was coming.

Nothing yet. The army was still assembling. Still gathering. Still waiting for whatever signal would send it moving.

When it moved, it would find two thousand crossbows, eight ballistas, twenty-four siege lances, and a woman who had spent sixty years learning how to turn people into soldiers and terrain into weapons.

The Forge had done its work. The Commander was ready.
