Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 465: Chapter 460: Teaching Them

Location:Mid Ring, Vel’thari Containment — Fortress / Dead Spot Base

Date/Time:Emberrise, 9942 AZI — Day 128, 237 days remaining

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

Jayde started with the crossbow.

She didn’t lecture. She sat on the fortress courtyard floor, laid out the components — limb, riser, rail, cams, string — and built one while they watched. Hands moving with the economy of a woman who’d assembled two dozen of these and could do it blind. The students stood in a semicircle, seven faces ranging from intent concentration to the glazed bewilderment of cultivators being asked to pay attention to a piece of wood.

”Each of you builds one,” Jayde said. ”Today. From parts I’ve pre-made. By tomorrow you know this weapon the way you know your cultivation technique. Better, because this weapon won’t get you killed by broadcasting your position.”

She’d fabricated the components overnight in the shuttle — simplified versions of her own compound design, lower draw weight, pre-cut limbs and riser blocks that needed only assembly. The cam systems were basic but functional. The trigger mechanisms were crude copies of the sear-and-latch she’d perfected. Good enough for workers. Good enough to keep seven students alive.

Meifen finished first. The dual-affinity student’s hands moved with an engineer’s confidence, the Inferno-Galebreath mind that was accustomed to manipulating two essence types simultaneously translating seamlessly to mechanical assembly. She tested the draw. Checked the cam alignment. Adjusted the string tension with a precision that made Jayde look twice.

”You’ve worked with tools before,” Jayde said.

”My mother was a blacksmith before she married up. I spent my childhood in the forge.” Meifen drew the crossbow to full, held the sight picture for three seconds, and dry-fired. The release was clean. ”This is clever. The cams store energy through mechanical advantage instead of essence infusion. Who designed it?”

”I did.”

Meifen looked at her. The look lasted longer than comfortable. ”Grade 2 students don’t design compound mechanical weapons systems.”

”This one did.”

The other students took longer. Two struggled with the cam assembly — the pulley alignment required precision that their essence-trained hands weren’t used to. One snapped a string during tensioning and had to start over. Eden moved between them, her medical hands finding the fine-motor work natural, helping adjust tension and alignment with the patient competence of someone who’d assembled far more complex devices in another life.

By evening, seven crossbows sat in a line on the courtyard wall. Seven students stood behind them. Each one held a weapon they’d built with their own hands. The expressions had shifted from bewilderment to something Jayde recognized from a hundred training exercises across two lifetimes: the specific, quiet pride of people who’d made something that worked.

”Tomorrow,” Jayde said, ”you learn to shoot.”

***

The shooting took three days.

Not because the crossbows were difficult to aim. Because cultivators aimed with essence. They tracked targets through energy signatures, guided strikes with cultivation sense, hit what they intended to hit because their magic told them where the target was. Remove the magic and they were functionally blind. They’d spent their entire training learning to fight with a sense they couldn’t use here, and the adjustment was harder than any of them expected.

Jayde set up target plates — worker chitin mounted on debris-field supports at ten, fifteen, and twenty paces. She marked the relay hub location with charcoal. ”That dot. Every bolt, every time. Nothing else matters.”

The first day was humbling. Bolts hit stone, hit dirt, hit the ceiling. One student fired wide by three meters at ten paces and looked at the crossbow as if it were defective. It wasn’t. His aim was. He’d been casting Torrent whips for four years, letting his cultivation sense do the targeting, and had never learned to use his eyes for what they were designed for.

”Your eyes work,” Jayde told him. ”You’ve just never trusted them. Stop reaching for your essence. Look at the target. See where the bolt needs to go. Let your hands follow your eyes instead of your cultivation.”

Meifen adapted fastest. Her dual-affinity background gave her something the single-affinity students didn’t have: practice thinking about energy and mechanics as separate systems. She could isolate the mechanical act of aiming from the cultivation instinct to sense, and she could train one without the other.

By day three, she was hitting the relay hub target at fifteen paces, four shots out of six. The grouping was tight enough that the chitin plate had a cluster of holes around the charcoal dot that looked almost intentional.

”You’re a natural,” Eden said, examining the grouping.

”I’m a blacksmith’s daughter who learned to throw hammer-scale at targets before she could read,” Meifen said. ”Hand-eye coordination isn’t cultivation. It’s practice.”

The others ranged from competent to adequate. None of them were soldiers. None of them had the sixty years of muscle memory that let Jayde put a bolt through a joint membrane at twenty paces without conscious aim. But adequate was enough. Adequate kept you alive when the alternative was full-power Inferno bursts that rang the dinner bell.

Jayde walked them through the fortress corridors next.

”These walls were engineered for exactly this,” she said, running her hand along the carved stone. ”See the angles? The sight lines converge at these points. The ceiling drops here, forcing anything tall into a crouch. The floor narrows here, channeling movement into single-file.” She stopped at a junction. ”Kill zone. Two crossbows positioned at these points cover every approach. Anything that enters this corridor dies before it reaches you.”

”Who built this?” one of the students asked.

”Someone who understood the ecosystem. Long before the Academy existed.”

She taught them watch rotation. Four-hour shifts. Two sentries. Eyes on the corridors. Ears on the stone.

”Cultivators fight,” Jayde said. ”They don’t watch. They train to engage threats, not detect them. You’re learning to detect.” She stood at the observation point she’d established during her first weeks. ”The fight you see coming is the fight you win. The fight you don’t is the one that kills you.”

The students weren’t used to four hours of watching nothing. The first night, two of them fell asleep. Jayde woke them without anger. Exhaustion was a problem she understood. She adjusted the rotation: three-hour shifts, staggered, with movement between the observation points to keep the blood flowing. The second night, nobody slept.

The pheromone disruption system was Eden’s idea and Jayde’s execution.

Eden had been studying the alarm pheromone for months — the chemical signal that Charlings released when threatened, the substance that brought reinforcements flooding toward a combat site. She’d isolated the compound during her dissections, extracted it from dead workers’ thoracic glands, and stored it in sealed containers from the ring supplies.

”If we apply this to specific tunnel routes,” Eden said, holding up a container of the amber fluid, ”the colony’s navigation system reads those routes as compromised. Active threat sites. The patrols reroute around them.”

The students were horrified and fascinated in equal measure.

”You’re using the insects’ own chemicals to redirect them?” Meifen said.

”Their biology is their weakness,” Jayde said. ”They navigate by pheromone. If we control the pheromone landscape, we control their movement.” She drew a map on the floor. ”These four routes are the primary approaches to this fortress. We mark them with alarm pheromone. The patrols divert. The fortress becomes invisible to the colony’s navigation network.”

”For how long?”

”The pheromone degrades. Twelve to eighteen hours depending on air circulation. We reapply daily.”

They applied the first batch that evening. Four students, supervised by Jayde, painting alarm pheromone on the tunnel walls with brushes fashioned from nerve-fiber. The work was disgusting — the fluid smelled like burned metal and rotting vegetation combined — and the students’ faces reflected a species-deep revulsion at handling the chemicals of things that had been trying to eat them.

The clicking changed within an hour. The patrol traffic that had been passing the fortress’s outer perimeter on regular intervals shifted. Rerouted. The colony’s navigation system read the marked routes as active combat zones and diverted its logistics traffic to alternative paths.

”It worked,” one of the students whispered.

”It always works,” Jayde said. ”Biology doesn’t lie.”

***

She moved them to the dead spot on day one hundred and thirty.

The fortress was defensible but limited. Supplies ran through the ring and couldn’t sustain nine people indefinitely. The dead spot had the Resolute — bunks, medical facilities, storage. And it had the one thing the fortress couldn’t provide: absolute safety from the colony.

Jayde prepared the dead spot first. She walked the Resolute’s corridors and stripped anything that would raise questions: the datapad went into the ring, the perimeter map was stored, the fabricator in the shuttle’s cargo bay was powered down, and the bay sealed. The shuttle itself she locked with a mechanical bolt from the outside, the hull looking like what it was to someone who’d never seen a starship: a large, old, metal structure that had been here longer than the Academy.

The Resolute was harder to disguise. The corridors were military-standard, the layout purposeful, the design philosophy visible in every bulkhead and doorframe. But military architecture looked the same whether it was Federation or Doha — functional, modular, built for efficiency. Without labels, screens, or operational equipment, the ship was a metal building. Old. Strange. Explained by its location.

”Pre-Academy construction,” Jayde told them as they entered the dead spot. ”Old wreckage. Nobody knows who built them. Don’t touch anything in the sealed sections.”

The students were too awed by the dead spot itself to question the architecture. The moment they crossed the boundary, every one of them felt it — the absolute silence that came with zero corruption energy. The absence of the constant low-grade hum that they’d lived with for months. Seven cultivators who had been fighting and hiding and sleeping with one eye open in a world that wanted to eat them, suddenly standing in a place where nothing hunted.

The silence hit them differently. The two who’d been maintaining the Galebreath barrier during the rescue — the ones who’d spent the most essence keeping their group alive — simply stopped walking. Their bodies registered the safety before their minds did, the constant background calculation of threat response threat response threat response shutting down for the first time in weeks, and the absence of that calculation felt like setting down a weight they’d forgotten they were carrying.

One of them — the youngest, a Grade 4 boy who’d said almost nothing since the rescue — sat down on the ground and started crying. Not loudly. Not dramatically. The quiet, overwhelmed weeping of someone whose body had been holding tension for so long that the sudden absence of it felt like a physical blow.

Eden sat beside him. Didn’t touch him. Didn’t speak. Just sat. On her shoulder, Zhi watched with dark eyes that understood exactly what the boy was feeling, because the serpent had felt it too, months ago, when the dead spot had meant safety for the first time.

[He’s like me,] Zhi said through the bond. [Before.]

”Yes,” Eden murmured. ”Exactly like you.”

Another student — one of the fighters who’d been holding the defensive line over the wounded girl during the rescue — walked to the nearest wall of the Resolute and pressed her palms flat against the hull. The metal was cold. Solid. Real. She stood there for a long time with her hands on the ship and her forehead against the surface, breathing the way people breathe when they’ve been underwater too long and have finally broken the surface.

Meifen didn’t cry. She stood in the dead spot’s silence and looked at the Resolute’s hull and at the sealed shuttle beyond it and at the tripwire perimeter and the motion sensors and the fifty meters of cleared sight lines, and her expression was not relief. It was calculation. The Grade 5 mind behind those eyes was adding up the evidence: the fortress, the pheromone system, the crossbows, the dead spot base, the months of preparation, the mechanical suit and chitin-alloy armor, and the woman at the center of all of it who was supposedly a Grade 2 student.

The sum didn’t balance.

Eden taught medical care in the Resolute’s bay. Wound cleaning. Chitin-fragment extraction. Bone-setting. The basics that kept people alive between fights, presented in the calm, methodical voice of a doctor who’d trained hundreds of field medics in another life.

”The system outlives the teacher,” Eden told them. ”I won’t always be there. If one of you goes down, the person beside them needs to be the medic. Every one of you learns this.”

She taught them to recognize concussion. To splint a fracture using crossbow limbs as braces. To pack a wound with the herbal compound Green had included in the ring supplies, pressed against the bleeding, held in place with strips of cloth cut from spare clothing.

”How do you KNOW all this?” one of the students asked. The question had been circling the group for days.

”I had a good teacher,” Jayde said from the doorway.

True. Many of them. Kazren. White. Heizan. Isha. And sixty years as Commander SN1098.

That evening, Jayde sat by the Resolute’s hull. No fire — the fabricator’s residual heat from the sealed shuttle was enough to warm the air, and open flame in the dead spot would be visible for kilometers. The students were inside, settling into the bunks, the first real beds most of them had slept in since entering the Harrowing.

Meifen came out. Sat across from her. The two of them in the dead spot’s silence, the clicking inaudible, the stars invisible, the darkness complete except for the faint glow of the motion sensors at the perimeter.

”You’re not a Grade 2 student, are you.”

Not a question. A statement. The culmination of days of observation from a mind too sharp to ignore what it was seeing. Meifen’s eyes were steady. She wasn’t angry. She wasn’t afraid. She was a Grade 5 cultivator who had been outperformed in every tactical, mechanical, and strategic dimension by someone three cultivation ranks below her, and she wanted to understand why.

Jayde didn’t answer.

Meifen didn’t push. The silence between them was the silence of two people who understood that some answers came with conditions, and the conditions hadn’t been met.

”Whatever you are,” Meifen said after a long time, ”I’m glad you’re here.”

She stood. Walked inside. The bunks creaked as she settled in.

Jayde sat alone in the dark. Day one hundred and thirty. Two hundred and thirty-five remaining. Nine people in the dead spot. Seven crossbows that hadn’t existed a week ago. A pheromone system that made the fortress invisible. A training program that turned cultivators into soldiers.

And a feeling, faint but persistent, that something at the edge of the dead spot’s boundary was watching.
