Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 485: Chapter 480: Lyria and the Aetherwings

Location:Zhū’kethara — Diplomatic Quarters

Date/Time:Cinderfall, 9942 AZI

Realm:Demon Realm

The Aetherwing delegation arrived on wings.

Five of them. They descended through the mountain’s eastern ventilation shaft — the only entrance to Zhū’kethara that accommodated flight — and landed in the diplomatic courtyard with the practiced grace of beings who had been flying for millennia. Their wings folded with a sound like silk drawing through water. Their feet touched stone. Their faces held the specific, guarded composure of people who had traveled a very long way to see something they weren’t sure they wanted to find.

Matriarch Velkaria led them. Fourteen thousand years old. Tall, even for an Aetherwing. Willowy, sharp-featured, with wings that caught the essence-light in fractures of silver and pale blue. Her eyes were the deep violet that marked the oldest Aetherwing bloodlines, and they swept the diplomatic courtyard with the careful assessment of someone who remembered what had happened the last time an Aetherwing trusted someone outside their own kind.

Thessaly stood at her right. The emissary who’d come alone months ago, who’d watched Lyria’s oaths fire and had gone home to report. Thessaly’s face was carefully neutral. The kind of neutral that hid something volatile underneath.

Ren met them at the courtyard’s edge. He’d dressed simply — the demon king’s formal robes, dark green and gold, the Vor’kesh vine at his throat. No entourage. No guards. The Kael’thoren stood at the corridor junctions, visible enough to register as present, distant enough to avoid provocation.

”Matriarch Velkaria,” Ren said. ”Welcome to Zhū’kethara.”

”Da’Ren.” Velkaria’s voice was cool. Precise. The voice of a woman who had been leading her people for fourteen thousand years and had learned that warmth was a liability in diplomacy. ”Your emissary’s report was... extraordinary. We are here to determine whether it was also accurate.”

”It was accurate.”

”Then show us.”

***

He showed them the evidence.

The SoulBloom pill came first. Ren set it on the table between them. Beautiful. That was the cruelty of it. The pill glowed with a soft, luminescent warmth that caught the chamber’s light and held it like a captured sunrise. It looked divine. Sacred. The kind of object you’d place on an altar and pray to. The most beautiful thing in the room, and every molecule of its beauty had been rendered from a child’s soul.

”Obtained through black market channels,” Ren said. ”The same product sold across three realms as a cultivation accelerant. Cultivators who take it feel stronger. Purer. Closer to the divine.” He let the pause carry the weight. ”Now I’ll show you why.”

Velkaria looked at the pill. The violet eyes read the luminescence with the caution of someone who recognized beauty as a potential weapon. ”A cultivation pill. Sold on the black market. What does this have to do with the Aetherwing people?”

”Everything.” Ren set a second object on the table. A crystal. Pale, multifaceted, the size of a fist. ”This is what it has to do with your people. Our healer Vaelith developed this with the help of a Crystalsinger. It reads the biological origin of organic material and renders it as color. Each species produces a distinct signature.”

Velkaria’s alchemist leaned forward. ”Show me.”

Ren drew a small knife. Pricked his own finger. Let a single drop of blood fall beside the crystal.

The crystal pulsed deep green.

”Demon blood reads green,” Ren said. He produced two vials from his ring. ”Elf reads pale silver.” He set the first vial beside the crystal. The color shifted. Silver, clean, unmistakable. ”Human reads warm amber.” The second vial. The crystal responded.

He looked at the alchemist. ”Aetherwing reads deep violet. But you don’t have to take my word for it.”

The alchemist understood. She drew her own blade. Pricked her own finger. The drop of blood fell beside the crystal.

Deep violet. Rich. Luminous. The color of her own race, rendered by a crystal she hadn’t built, from blood she’d provided herself. Undeniable.

”Mixed heritage shows multiple colors,” Ren continued, producing a fourth vial. ”This is from a mixed-blood with elf and human heritage.” The crystal pulsed silver and amber simultaneously, the colors threading through each other in proportions that reflected the bloodline concentration.

The alchemist’s violet eyes were wide. She reached for the crystal. Ren let her take it. She held it, turned it, examined the formation work inscribed in its facets.

”Now.” Ren set the SoulBloom pill beside the crystal.

The crystal erupted.

Colors flooded through the facets — deep green, pale silver, warm amber, deep violet. Every race. Layered. Braided together. The organic base of the SoulBloom wasn’t from one bloodline. It was from all of them. Demon. Elf. Human. Aetherwing. Combined. Processed. Rendered into a pill that glowed with beauty while containing horror.

The deep violet was unmistakable. Aetherwing.

The alchemist set the crystal down. Her hands were shaking.

The chamber was very quiet.

Velkaria stared at the crystal. At the colors still fading from its facets. Deep violet among them.

”What you’re looking at,” Ren said, ”is the product of a breeding program that has operated for millennia. Mixed-blood children, bred in captivity across multiple realms. Their bodies and souls harvested. Ground down. Rendered into this pill and sold as a cultivation accelerant.” He let each word land. ”The organic material in that pill came from children. Infants. The younger the source, the purer the essence-potential. That is what makes SoulBloom so effective. That is why it glows like something divine.”

The alchemist made a sound. Small. Involuntary.

”Those they couldn’t breed, they hunted,” Ren continued. ”Any child with sufficient essence-potential will do. But mixed-bloods are the easiest prey. Every race looks down on them. Nobody questions when mixed-blood families disappear. Nobody investigates. Nobody cares.” He looked at Velkaria. ”That pill may or may not contain Aetherwing heritage. The next one might. The one after that might not. It depends on which children they took. Test enough of them, and the violet will appear.”

Velkaria’s hands gripped the chair arms. The violet eyes had gone hard. Not with anger. With the specific, controlled stillness of a leader absorbing a blow she couldn’t deflect.

”The SoulBloom trade is not the purpose of the breeding program,” Ren said. ”It’s a profitable side effect. The pills were discovered accidentally — a byproduct of processes we don’t fully understand yet. The breeding program itself has been operating for millennia, and its true intention...” He paused. Chose honesty over certainty. ”I have suspicions. I don’t have proof. What I have is evidence that children of every race have been bred, harvested, and consumed. Whatever the original purpose, the suffering is real.”

”You may take the crystals,” Ren said. ”Vaelith has produced six. They’re yours. Test any SoulBloom pill you can find.”

”The testimonies,” Velkaria said. Her voice had changed. The cool precision was gone. What remained was the voice of a woman who had just been shown something she could verify independently, couldn’t deny, and didn’t want to believe.

He activated the first crystal. A woman’s voice filled the chamber — a mixed-blood descendant, Aetherwing heritage visible in her bone structure, recounting what her grandmother had told her mother and her mother had told her. The family history passed down through generations of captivity. How her ancestor’s wings had been clipped. How the bloodline had been harvested. How the children had been separated and paired according to someone else’s design.

The stories of descendants. Not first-hand accounts. The original victims hadn’t survived to tell their own stories. These were inherited memories, family histories carried forward by people who’d never seen their ancestors’ wings but knew what had been done to them.

”Crystals can be forged,” Velkaria said. Her voice was steady. Her knuckles were white on the chair arms. ”Memories implanted.”

”They can,” Ren agreed. ”Which is why I’m offering you direct access. Interview any mixed-blood in our population. Your choice. Unescorted. As many as you need. Stay a week. Stay a month. Talk to them without a demon in the room.”

”And the documentation?”

He spread it on the table. Temple seal-marks. Formation-locked authentication that the alchemist examined for two full minutes before looking up.

”The seals are genuine, Matriarch. I cannot replicate these. Nobody outside the Temple’s inner formation architecture can.”

Velkaria stared at the documents. The violet eyes read them line by line. Her composure held. Fourteen thousand years had built composure that could withstand almost anything.

Almost.

Velkaria’s composure cracked once. When the evidence crystals played the testimony of an Aetherwing-heritage woman — wings pinned, bloodline harvested, describing the procedure in a voice that had gone flat with repetition — the Matriarch’s hands tightened on the arms of her chair. The knuckles went white. The wings, folded against her back, shifted once. An involuntary movement.

Then the composure returned. The hands relaxed. The wings stilled.

”How many Aetherwing-heritage mixed-bloods are in your population?” Velkaria asked.

”Roughly seventy-five thousand carry identifiable Aetherwing heritage markers. Among the one and a half million mixed-bloods we’ve rescued from persecution in the Mid Realm, Aetherwing blood is less common than elf or human, but far from rare. Demon heritage is the least represented.”

”And they’re alive. Thriving.”

”They’re citizens. They live alongside demon-blooded, elf-blooded, human, and dwarven-heritage families. They work. They cultivate. Their children play together.” Ren paused. ”Their wings, where they manifest, are not clipped.”

The silence that followed that sentence was the loudest thing in the room.

***

Then Lyria walked in.

Ren had planned the timing precisely. He’d seen what happened when Lyria entered a room with an Aetherwing in it — the involuntary oath response, the wings spreading, the composure cracking. Thessaly’s reaction months ago had taught him the value of what Lyria’s presence did to her mother’s people. A diplomat used every tool available. Lyria was the most powerful tool in the room, and she’d agreed to be used.

”They should see what they threw away,” she’d said. No hesitation. Kaela’s steel.

She entered through the main doorway. No escort. No ceremony. A young woman of eighteen, walking into a room full of the race that had abandoned her bloodline, carrying herself with the quiet, steel-backed directness that was her mother’s gift and her grandmother’s legacy.

The wings were visible. Gossamer. Pale grey with silver iridescence. Aetherwing wings — unmistakable, the specific membrane structure and vein pattern that fourteen thousand years of Aetherwing breeding had refined into something no other race could replicate. On a girl with jade-white skin that spoke of demon blood, cheekbones that carried the angular precision of elven heritage, and a prophetic rune on her forehead that pulsed with faint silver light.

Four bloodlines in one body. Demon. Elf. Aetherwing. Human.

The delegation stood. All five of them. Simultaneously. Not a coordinated diplomatic gesture — an involuntary response. Something in the room had changed when Lyria crossed the threshold, something that the Aetherwing racial essence recognized before their conscious minds could process it.

Velkaria’s wings unfolded.

The Matriarch’s eyes went wide. Her hands gripped the chair she’d been sitting in. The wings spread behind her — the full fourteen-foot span of a fourteen-thousand-year-old Aetherwing Matriarch — and she couldn’t stop them. The oaths of service, woven into Aetherwing racial essence since the Luminari’s covenant, were pulling. Not metaphorically. Physically. Something about Lyria, the prophetic gift, the trace of divinity that the Codex had invested in its chosen Prophetess, registered in the Aetherwing oaths as something that required acknowledgment.

The other four delegates’ wings were opening too. Involuntary. Helpless. Five Aetherwings standing in a demon king’s diplomatic chamber with their wings spread and their composure shattered by an eighteen-year-old young woman who hadn’t said a word.

Lyria looked at them. The silver-grey wings. The violet eyes. The involuntary response that they couldn’t control and couldn’t explain. She didn’t flinch. She didn’t bow. She stood in the doorway with her own Aetherwing wings visible behind her and she waited until Velkaria’s eyes found hers.

”I grew up among mixed-bloods,” Lyria said. Her voice was calm. Direct. Not angry. Factual. Kaela’s steel, the specific quality of a young woman who had been raised hearing stories and had decided that truth was more valuable than diplomacy. ”People with Aetherwing blood in their veins. Some of their families were cast out by your people. Some were ridiculed. Some simply disappeared — taken, experimented on, their bloodlines harvested by people who saw mixed heritage as material, not life.” She paused. ”My grandmother carried Aetherwing wings and demon blood, and the world treated her like something broken. Not because she was. Because your people decided that anything less than pure was wrong.”

Velkaria said nothing. The wings were still spread. The violet eyes held the rigid composure of a woman who had ruled for fourteen thousand years and would not break in a demon king’s chamber, no matter what stood before her.

”Demons took my family in,” Lyria continued. ”A race most others fear. They opened their borders. They gave us a home. They treated my mother as kin when the world outside would have treated her as a mistake.” She let the pause do the work. ”Where were you?”

The question hung in the chamber. Five Aetherwings with spread wings and no answer.

One of the younger delegates — a woman with silver-white wings and the trembling jaw of someone fighting to maintain composure — spoke. ”We didn’t know.”

”You didn’t look.” Lyria’s voice didn’t rise. Didn’t harden. The calm was worse than anger. Anger could be dismissed as youth, as inexperience, as a child not understanding the complexities of racial politics. Calm couldn’t be dismissed. Calm was a girl who had grown up among the people her grandmother’s race had abandoned and had decided that the facts were enough. ”Your laws said half-breeds were abominations. Your people enforced those laws for millennia. You didn’t know because knowing would have required caring, and caring would have required changing. So you didn’t look.”

Velkaria’s mouth opened. Closed. The Matriarch who had led her people for fourteen thousand years, who had maintained the isolationist policy that denied mixed-bloods, who had survived by drawing lines between her people and everyone else — had nothing to say. The evidence was in the room. Walking. Breathing. Carrying wings that the Matriarch’s own policies said should not exist.

”The Prophetess gift has not been given to an Aetherwing in over two hundred and fifty thousand years,” Velkaria said. Her voice was hoarse. ”We have waited. We have prayed. We told ourselves that the Codex had forgotten us. That we were no longer worthy.”

She looked at Lyria’s wings. At the rune. At the impossible girl.

”The Codex didn’t forget us,” Velkaria said. ”It chose the bloodline we tried to destroy.”

***

The delegation didn’t commit to full alliance. Velkaria was too old and too careful for that. But what she offered carried weight.

”We will review our laws,” Velkaria said. The words cost her. Ren could see it in the tension of her jaw. ”The mixed-bloods with Aetherwing heritage will be recognized. Not as half-breeds. As kin.”

”And the coalition?”

”We will participate. Cautiously.” She paused. ”My people have one ability that may serve the coalition directly. We can sense dimensional space. Distortions. Sealed pockets. Hidden realms. If the Temple is using concealed dimensions to breed and contain captive populations, Aetherwing sensitives can locate them.”

Ren filed that. The dwarves offered engineering. The Aetherwings offered dimensional detection. Each race contributing what only they could provide.

”Before we proceed,” Ren said, ”I require an oath. Everything presented today — the diagnostic crystals, the SoulBloom analysis, the population data, the location of our people — cannot reach the Temple. If they learn what we know, they will relocate their operations. The evidence disappears. The children disappear.”

Velkaria’s eyes narrowed. Not offended. Assessing.

”A blood oath,” Ren continued. ”Binding. Everyone in this room and everyone who handles this intelligence going forward. The same terms I gave the dwarves.” His purple eyes held hers. ”This stays with a bloodsworn circle. Small. Controlled. No one connected to the Temple. No exceptions.”

”You gave the dwarves the same terms?”

”Identical. Thorgrund swore without hesitation. The information is too dangerous to protect with anything less.”

Velkaria looked at her delegation. The alchemist. Thessaly. The two younger delegates. All of them had seen the crystal’s colors. All of them knew what the pill contained.

”Agreed,” Velkaria said.

The oath was sworn before the delegation left. Blood on stone. The ancient binding that predated every political system on Doha, enforced by the essence-architecture of the oath itself. Break the oath, and the blood remembers.

Velkaria looked at Lyria one last time. ”The Prophetess will be honored. By all of us. As she should have been from the beginning.”

Lyria said nothing. Her wings folded against her back. Voresh’s hand stayed on her shoulder. The sixth strand pulsed gold between them.

Ren watched the delegation leave. Five Aetherwings, wings folded tight, flying back through the ventilation shaft.

He stood in the empty chamber. Two races had now responded. The dwarves with immediate, unconditional alliance. The Aetherwings with reluctant engagement compelled by a young woman they’d tried to erase. The elves were still deliberating among themselves — Caelwyn’s reports had reached their council, but no elven delegation had arrived at Zhū’kethara. Not yet. Ren’s correspondence with the elven collective was ongoing. That meeting would come.

The coalition was forming. Not around Ren. Around the world that Ren was building — the world where mixed blood wasn’t a crime, where discarded children became Prophetesses, where the strongest alliances grew from the cracks that other races had tried to seal.

The strongest Prophetess in a quarter million years hadn’t come from pure blood. She’d come from four bloodlines mixed together — demon, elf, Aetherwing, human — in a girl that any one of those races would have discarded.

Mixed blood didn’t diminish. It concentrated.

The Codex had made its point.
