Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 470: Chapter 465: Diplomatic Responses

Location:Zhū’kethara — Audience Chamber

Date/Time:Ashbloom, 9942 AZI — Month 6

Realm:Demon Realm

The Aetherwing arrived with her wings folded so tight they looked painted on.

Ren noticed. Ten thousand years of reading body language had made the practice reflexive: distrust, caution, a readiness to leave. The woman stood in the audience chamber’s center with the specific rigidity of someone whose mandate began and ended with the word ”observe.”

She was young. By Aetherwing standards, four thousand years was barely seasoned. Her face carried the angular precision of her race’s bone structure: high cheekbones, narrow jaw, pale silver eyes that tracked the chamber with the systematic attention of someone cataloguing exits before conversations.

”I am Thessaly,” she said. ”Sent by Matriarch Velkaria of the Aetherwing Conclave. I carry authority to observe and report.”

”Welcome, Thessaly.” Ren sat in the plain stone chair he used for diplomatic meetings. Not the throne. Not the dais. The chair said: we are having a conversation, not an audience. ”You’ve traveled a long way to observe.”

”We responded because we can feel the shifts. Dimensional instabilities. The resonance from the Lower Realm. Our seers report anomalies. Something is changing. The Matriarch wants to understand what.”

Ren studied her for a moment. Young. Cautious. Authorized to observe and nothing more. The Matriarch had sent someone expendable enough to lose and junior enough to control. Standard first contact. Velkaria was testing the waters without committing a toe.

He could respect that. He’d done the same thing a thousand times.

”Something is changing,” Ren agreed. ”And it affects more than the demon realm. Your seers are correct about the dimensional instabilities. They’re connected to activities that have been operating across multiple realms for a very long time.”

He paused. Let the silence work.

”The evidence is extensive. Detailed. The kind of documentation that warrants a thorough examination by someone with the authority to act on what they see.” He met Thessaly’s silver eyes. ”I mean no disrespect, Thessaly. But what I have to share is not something I’ll present to an observer. The Matriarch herself, or someone she trusts with decision-making authority, would be the appropriate audience.”

Thessaly’s jaw tightened. The diplomatic training held, but the implication landed: you’re too junior for what I’m holding. Not an insult. A statement of scope.

”You’re saying the evidence is significant enough to warrant the Matriarch’s personal attention.”

”I’m saying that when she sees it, she’ll wish she’d come herself the first time.”

Thessaly processed that. The silver eyes narrowed. ”Can you give me enough to justify that recommendation? The Matriarch doesn’t travel on vague promises.”

Ren considered. This was the game. Give enough to send the envoy home hungry. Not enough to satisfy. Enough that Thessaly’s report would make Velkaria sit forward in whatever seat she occupied and think: I need to see this myself.

He chose his words the way he chose everything: deliberately, with the patience of a man who had learned that haste was the luxury of people with short lifespans.

”The dimensional instabilities your seers are detecting are caused, in part, by the creation and collapse of sealed pocket dimensions. Not natural phenomena. Engineered spaces.” He watched her face. The silver eyes sharpened. Good. ”Created by an organization that has been operating across racial boundaries for millennia, targeting populations that the established powers have chosen to ignore.”

He let each sentence land with the measured pace of a king who had been choosing his words carefully since before Thessaly’s grandmother was born. Not rushing. Not explaining. Placing stones on the board and letting the envoy see the pattern forming.

”The scope is larger than any single race can address alone.”

Thessaly was still. Processing.

”And the targets include Aetherwing blood.”

The last three words did what they were meant to do. Thessaly’s wings shifted. Not a full unfurl. A micro-adjustment, the gossamer membranes pressing tighter against her back as the instinct to protect warred with the instinct to retreat. The tell of someone who’d just been told that the threat she’d been sent to assess was personal.

”Aetherwing blood,” she repeated. The diplomatic neutrality held, but the voice had thinned.

”Among others. I won’t detail the evidence for an observation mission.” Ren kept his voice mild. Not a rebuke. A boundary. ”But I will say this: what I have would change how the Conclave views its isolation policy. And it would change it permanently.”

The boundary was the message. You don’t have the clearance for what I’m holding, and what I’m holding is too important to waste on a report that will sit on the Matriarch’s desk alongside a dozen others. Come back with someone who can make decisions, and I’ll give them something worth deciding about.

Thessaly understood. He could see it in the silver eyes: the envoy calculating how to frame her report in terms that would move the Matriarch from caution to action. Not easy. Velkaria was famously careful. But the hint about Aetherwing blood as a target would land differently than generalized warnings about dimensional instability.

”I will recommend the Matriarch send a delegation,” Thessaly said carefully. ”With expanded authority.”

”I’ll be here,” Ren said. And smiled. Just slightly. The smile of a king who had placed his stones exactly where he wanted them.

***

The meeting should have ended there. Thessaly had what she needed: enough to report, not enough to act on, the recommendation forming behind her silver eyes. Clean. Professional. The kind of diplomatic exchange that moved slowly because moving slowly was how careful races survived.

The chamber door opened.

Lyria walked in carrying a water jug.

She’d been helping in the kitchens — her choice. The girl had her father’s quiet practicality and her mother Kaela’s refusal to sit idle. The water jug was for the side table. She’d brought one every afternoon for a week.

She stopped when she saw the Aetherwing.

Ren watched the moment land. Lyria’s storm-grey eyes, shot through with the gold and green of her Shan’keth, fixed on Thessaly’s wings. The folded gossamer membranes. Wings that matched her own. Lyria’s wings shifted involuntarily. A half-unfurl. Recognition at the level of blood.

Thessaly turned.

The silver eyes found Lyria. Found the wings — pale grey with silver iridescence, brighter now than months ago, luminous with the essence her vine was feeding into every part of her. Found the prophetic rune on the girl’s forehead, silver, pulsing faintly. Found the Shan’keth vine climbing from her jaw to her throat, marking demon heritage on a body that carried Aetherwing essence.

Thessaly stood. The movement wasn’t voluntary. Her wings unfolded on their own, spreading from the tight fold to full extension, the gossamer membranes catching the chamber’s light and scattering pale silver patterns across the stone walls. The spread was wide. Wider than the folded wings had suggested. Her body turned toward Lyria with the mechanical precision of a compass finding north. Her chin lifted. Her hands dropped to her sides. The posture that replaced the diplomatic bearing was older. Formal in a way that predated any protocol she’d been taught.

The posture of service. Of presentation. The body’s answer to an obligation the mind couldn’t override.

Ren felt it on the Common Path. A frequency. Deep. Old. The oaths of service, the ancient Aetherwing obligation to the Luminari, woven into their racial essence during an age when the Luminari still walked. Dormant for millennia. Awakening now because the thing they’d been built to find was standing in a doorway holding a water jug.

A thread of pale silver light connected Thessaly to Lyria across the chamber. Not a bond. Something older. A racial memory given physical form. The server and the served, connected by an architecture that neither had built and neither could refuse.

Thessaly’s face showed the horror of someone whose body was doing something their mind hadn’t authorized. The silver eyes were wide. She was fighting it, the muscles at her wing-roots flexing, the membranes trembling with the effort of forcing them closed. She couldn’t. The oaths held them open the way a current holds a door.

Lyria stood in the doorway. The water jug in her hands. The storm-grey eyes confused, the gold-and-green flecks bright with the Shan’keth’s response to whatever was happening between them. She looked at Thessaly’s wings. At the posture. At the silver thread that she couldn’t see but could feel, a vibration in the air that her racial architecture recognized even if her conscious mind didn’t.

”What are you doing?” Lyria asked. Quiet. Directed at Thessaly. The directness of a girl who’d grown up in a village where people said what they meant.

Thessaly couldn’t answer. Her jaw worked. The diplomatic vocabulary that had served her for four thousand years was gone, replaced by a silence that was its own kind of speech.

Lyria stood in the doorway. Confused. She saw the reaction. Didn’t understand it.

”Who is she?” Thessaly’s voice had changed. The diplomatic register was gone. What replaced it was raw, urgent.

Ren hadn’t planned this. He’d intended to save Lyria for the Matriarch — the strongest card in his hand, held for the highest-ranking player. But the card had played itself, and ten thousand years of political instinct told him: don’t fight the moment. Use it.

”Lyria,” he said. Measured. Each word placed. ”Prophetess. Mixed-blood. Demon. Elf. Aetherwing. Human. Four bloodlines.”

Every word landed. Thessaly stared at Lyria. At the wings. At the rune. At the impossible girl who carried four races’ blood and a gift that hadn’t existed in over a thousand years.

”The prophetic gift.” Thessaly’s voice was barely controlled. ”A true Prophetess. The oaths—” She stopped. Her wings were still extended. She couldn’t fold them. ”I need to report to my people. This is — the Matriarch needs to know. The Conclave needs to—”

”Of course,” Ren said. Calm. Not pressing. Giving the diplomat room to process what her body had already decided.

Thessaly gathered herself. The wings folded slowly, the oaths releasing their grip by degrees. She straightened. The composure reassembled, but the cracks showed. The silver eyes kept returning to Lyria.

”My report will need to be expanded beyond observation,” Thessaly said. ”The Matriarch will send a delegation. A proper one. With authority.”

She left. Quickly.

The silence that followed was the silence of something seismic settling into place.

Lyria set the water jug on the side table.

”What just happened?”

”The Aetherwing have ancient obligations,” Ren said. ”Oaths woven into their essence. They respond to certain presences. Your prophetic gift, your heritage — the oaths recognized you.”

”Recognized me as what?”

”As someone they’re obligated to serve.”

Lyria set down the water jug. Slowly. The deliberate care of someone putting down an object so they could give their full attention to what they’d just heard.

”I grew up hiding these wings,” she said. Her voice was quiet. Factual. Kaela’s steel, cold-forged. ”My mother taught me to fold them flat, bind them under my clothes, never let anyone see. Because her people — the Aetherwing — killed half-breeds. Cast them out. Left them to survive or not survive in a world that didn’t want them.”

She looked at the spot where Thessaly had stood. The silver patterns from the unfolded wings were fading from the walls.

”And now their oaths are pulling them to ME. The half-breed they would have killed on sight a generation ago. The girl whose grandmother they cast out.” Lyria’s storm-grey eyes hardened. The gold-and-green flecks caught the light. ”I don’t want servants, Ren.”

”I know.”

”Good. Because when they come — when the Matriarch comes — they’re not going to find a girl who’s grateful that they finally noticed she exists. They’re going to find a Prophetess who knows exactly what the Aetherwing did to her family, and who has questions that four thousand years of diplomatic training won’t help them answer.”

Ren looked at her. Fifteen years old. Carrying four races’ blood. Holding a prophetic gift that had cost her five years of her life. Standing in a demon king’s audience chamber because strangers had saved her family when her mother’s people wouldn’t.

”Then they’ll answer to me,” she said.

She turned and walked out. The gossamer wings caught the light as she passed through the doorway, and the rune pulsed, and the oaths of service sent a signal that hadn’t been sent in millennia.

At the edge of the chamber, in the shadow of the nearest pillar, Voresh stood where he’d been standing since the meeting began. His tarnished copper eyes were fixed on Lyria. The Common Path carried what the old warrior was feeling. Not pride, not quite. Something adjacent. The specific, fierce tenderness of a truemate watching the world discover what he’d known since his beast erupted from thirty thousand years of dormancy and roared a single word into the silence.

The sixth strand between them pulsed. Golden. Steady.

***

Ren sat alone in the audience chamber.

He’d spent three months crafting the diplomatic approach. The correspondence had been precise: enough urgency to prompt a response, enough restraint to avoid appearing desperate. He’d planned to reveal the evidence in layers — surface data for the envoy, deeper analysis for the delegation, the full scope for the Matriarch herself. And Lyria had been the crown piece, the revelation he’d intended to hold until Velkaria was sitting across from him, close enough to feel the oaths activate in her own body.

Instead, a water jug and an afternoon routine had done what months of careful positioning hadn’t: given the Aetherwing a reason to come with real authority. Thessaly’s report wouldn’t need to persuade. The oaths had done the persuading. The emissary’s own body had told her what the evidence would confirm: something existed in the demon realm that the Aetherwing were compelled to answer to.

Ren allowed himself a moment of dark amusement. He’d planned to play Lyria as his strongest card, held back for the highest-ranking player at the table. The card had played itself. And it had played better than his plan, because the oaths’ involuntary activation was proof that no diplomat could dismiss as performance or fabrication. Thessaly hadn’t chosen to unfold her wings. The choice had been made for her by something older than choice.

The best diplomatic outcomes, in his experience, were the ones nobody planned.

The beast behind his ribs slept on, spending what it couldn’t afford in the depth below the depth. The thread to the Lower Realm pulled thin. But the pieces were moving. The Aetherwing were coming with authority. The elves were investigating. The farms were approaching their first harvest. The fertility rites were healing the land. Soravael was growing. Three more pregnancies confirmed.

The realm was recovering. Thread by thread. Alliance by alliance.

He just needed to hold long enough to see it through.
