Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 479: Chapter 474: Deeper

Location:Mid Ring, Vel’thari Containment — Tunnel Network

Date/Time:Ashbloom, 9942 AZI — Day 163, 202 days remaining

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The Ravagers came in packs of eight now.

Three months ago they’d hunted in threes. A month ago, fives. The packs were growing. Not because more Ravagers were being produced. Because existing packs were consolidating. Merging. Small hunting groups joining into larger formations that covered more ground and hit harder.

Jayde noticed the pattern on Day 160 when a patrol route that had consistently shown three-Ravager packs produced an eight-pack ambush that nearly killed Meifen.

The attack came from above. Two Ravagers on the tunnel ceiling, six on the ground, the pack splitting its approach across vertical and horizontal vectors for the first time. Meifen was running point with two students behind her, the standard patrol formation Jayde had taught them. The ceiling Ravagers dropped before anyone heard them coming.

The first one hit Meifen’s left shoulder. The impact drove her into the tunnel floor — rust-red chitin and ridged dorsal plates. Mandibles cycling with the wet precision of cutting tools designed to separate flesh from bone. Meifen’s crossbow discharged on impact, the bolt punching through the Ravager’s thorax at point-blank range, but the angle was wrong. The bolt missed the relay hub by a hand’s width, and the Ravager kept coming, mandibles closing on the chitin-alloy armor that covered Meifen’s shoulder.

The armor held. The teeth scored deep grooves in the alloy surface but didn’t penetrate. Meifen rolled, getting her legs under the Ravager’s belly, and kicked — the enhanced strength of a Grade 5 cultivator amplified by weeks of crossbow training.

The Ravager flew backward. Hit the tunnel wall. Got up. Charged.

Jayde shot it through the relay hub from twelve paces. The bolt entered the sensory-pit cluster and destroyed the central nervous relay in a spray of amber fluid. The Ravager’s legs kept driving for two steps on reflex, the body circling sideways, mandibles snapping at air. Then it collapsed.

Seven left.

”Formation,” Jayde said. The Commander’s register. Flat. Calm. The voice that said panic later, survive now.

The students closed. Three crossbows formed a firing line. The six ground-level Ravagers charged in a spread pattern — not the single-file column of worker castes but the coordinated fan of pack hunters spreading the target’s attention across six vectors.

The second ceiling Ravager dropped behind the firing line.

Jayde heard it before she saw it. The scrape of chitin on stone, the click of articulated legs releasing, the rush of displaced air as a horse-sized predator fell toward the back of Eden’s head.

She didn’t think. The siege bow materialized from the ring in her left hand — three hundred pounds of draw weight, pre-loaded, the heaviest weapon in her arsenal. She fired from the hip. The bolt crossed four meters of tunnel in a fraction of a second and hit the falling Ravager in the thorax.

The bolt went through. Through the chitin, through the body cavity, through the dorsal plate on the other side. The Ravager hit the ground behind Eden in two pieces, the siege bolt’s kinetic energy bisecting the creature along its central axis. Amber fluid sprayed across the tunnel wall. The student behind Eden stumbled backward, amber fluid spattering across his chest. Eden didn’t move. The doctor had been closer to worse.

”Six left,” Jayde said. ”Relay hubs. Fire.”

The firing line engaged. Three crossbows, six Ravagers. The bolts hit with the improved accuracy of students who’d spent weeks training for exactly this — the relay hub target at combat distance, the firing rhythm that Jayde had drilled into them until it was muscle memory. Three bolts. Two hits. One miss.

Five left.

Meifen was up. Shoulder bruised, armor scored, crossbow reloaded. She took the left flank without being told — the Grade 5 mind reading the combat geometry and placing herself where the firing angles converged.

Second volley. Three bolts. Three hits. The tunnel was learning the sound of crossbow bolts hitting chitin: a wet, sharp percussion that was nothing like the crack of essence strikes and everything like the sound of physics winning an argument with biology.

Two left. The surviving Ravagers broke. Not retreat — tactical withdrawal. The pack’s remnant turning and running with the coordinated speed of creatures that understood when an engagement was lost. They disappeared into the tunnel network within seconds, the clicking of their legs fading into the Mid Ring’s ambient noise.

Eight Ravagers. Forty seconds. Two ceiling drops — a tactic they’d never used before. The first near-casualty since training began.

”Meifen,” Jayde said. ”Report.”

”Armor held. Shoulder’s functional. Left side is going to bruise.” Meifen rotated the arm. Winced. Continued. ”The ceiling approach is new. They’ve never done that before.”

The report was crisp. Status, damage, tactical observation. Three months ago, Meifen would have said I’m fine or my shoulder hurts. Now she reported like a soldier debrief — injury, functionality, threat assessment. They all did. The students who’d trained under Jayde long enough were starting to speak in the clipped, efficient patterns she’d drilled into them without realizing she was drilling anything. The language of a military she’d never named, absorbed by students who’d never know where it came from.

”They’re adapting,” Jayde said. ”The same way we adapted. They’re learning that ground-level charges against a firing line don’t work, so they’re adding vertical vectors.”

”Can we train for that?”

”We’re training for it right now.”

***

They found the second group on Day 164.

Fourteen students. One instructor. Huddled in a natural cave formation two kilometers south of the dead spot, behind a barricade of stacked stone that the instructor had built across the cave mouth. The barricade was crude — fist-sized rocks piled to chest height, gaps between the stones, no formation work. It would slow a worker column. It wouldn’t stop a Ravager.

The group was in bad shape. The students were gaunt, hollow-eyed, young cultivators who’d been burning essence to stay alive for months. Running dry. The instructor was worse — an adult who’d been rationing his own food to feed fourteen students, maintaining the barricade by hand, keeping watch alone through shifts that had long since passed the point where sleep deprivation became dangerous.

He was carrying a student on his back. A girl. Mid-twenties. Unconscious. The wound on her leg was Charling mandible — deep, infected, the corruption-taint spreading through the tissue in the dark red web pattern that Jayde had learned to read as hours from septic, not days.

”We need the medical bay,” Jayde said. ”Now.”

They moved. Twenty-four people through the Mid Ring’s tunnel network, moving fast, the healthy students carrying the weak ones, Jayde on point with the siege bow and the compound crossbow and the specific, focused attention of a woman who was responsible for twenty-four lives in a place where everything clicked.

The Ravagers found them halfway.

A twelve-pack. The largest Jayde had encountered. They came from two tunnels simultaneously — six from the left, six from the right, the coordinated pincer that the colony’s tactical architecture produced with increasing sophistication.

”Wall formation,” Jayde snapped. ”Students inside. Crossbows on the flanks. Shenwei — get the wounded behind the line.”

The students moved. Months of training overriding months of terror. The crossbow-trained fighters took the flanks — Meifen left, Feiyan right, two of the original seven on each side. The unarmed students clustered at center. The instructors dragged the wounded to the rear.

Twelve Ravagers. In a tunnel junction. Against a group that was half-wounded and carrying dead weight.

Jayde stepped forward. Out of the formation. Into the junction’s center.

The Ravagers oriented on her. The closest target. The one standing alone in the junction’s center while the rest clustered behind a formation. Twelve sets of sensory pits tracking movement, heat, vibration. At this distance, they didn’t need her energy signature. They had her body.

She fired the siege bow.

The bolt hit the lead Ravager at full velocity and went through its head. The creature’s body kept moving for three steps on reflex before collapsing, the dorsal plates scraping the tunnel floor, the mandibles cycling on nothing. The Ravager behind it stumbled over the body.

Jayde dropped the siege bow. Drew the compound crossbow. Fired twice. Two relay hubs. Two Ravagers down.

”Flanks — fire,” she said.

Eight crossbows opened up from both sides. The tunnel junction became a kill zone — bolts crossing from left and right, hitting the Ravager pack in a crossfire that the creatures’ pack tactics couldn’t compensate for. The coordinated fan that had served them against single-front opponents dissolved in the face of multi-directional fire.

The bolts hit chitin. The chitin cracked. The amber fluid sprayed. The Ravagers that survived the first volley charged — three from the left, two from the right — and met the second volley at six meters.

Two more dropped. The remaining three reached the formation line.

One of Meifen’s students — the Grade 4 boy who’d frozen during the first hunt — stepped forward and put a bolt through a Ravager’s relay hub at two meters. Point-blank. The creature collapsed at his feet. He reloaded. Fired again. Missed. Reloaded. Fired. Hit.

The last Ravager hit the formation line at the junction of left and right flanks. It got through. Past the crossbow fire, past the armed students, into the cluster of unarmed wounded.

Jayde was there. The exoskeleton’s hydraulics drove her forward, and she caught the Ravager’s mandible with her armored forearm, the chitin-alloy plating absorbing the bite that would have severed an unarmored limb. The mandible locked. The Ravager’s body coiled, the ridged dorsal plates driving against the tunnel floor for leverage, trying to drag her down.

She shoved the compound crossbow into the gap between the Ravager’s head and thorax and fired. The bolt entered the neck junction and destroyed the ganglion cluster. The mandible released. The body went limp.

Jayde stood over the dead Ravager with amber fluid dripping from her armored forearm and looked at the tunnel junction.

Twelve Ravagers. Dead. Zero casualties. The students were standing. The wounded were intact. The formation had held.

The students were looking at her the way cultivators looked at someone so far above them that the distance stopped being a comparison and became a fact. Like the mountain was tall. Like the sky was high. Ashford had saved them. Ashford had trained them. Ashford had just killed twelve Ravagers and walked away without a scratch. The Grade 4 boy who’d put a bolt through a relay hub at point-blank was staring at her with the raw, uncomplicated devotion of a young man who’d found someone worth following and intended to follow her until she told him to stop.

He wasn’t the only one.

”Move,” Jayde said. ”Medical bay. Now.”

They moved.

***

The mantis was waiting at the dead spot entrance.

It had followed during the fight. Jayde had felt its attention — the sensory pits tracking her through the boundary zone, staying at the edge of the combat, reading the violence with the individual focus of a mind that was learning what its companion did when she left the silence.

Head-plate angled toward her. Blade-arms folded.

The new students screamed.

Fourteen people who’d spent months running from Charlings, suddenly face to face with one the size of a horse, sitting at the entrance to the place they’d been promised was safe. Three of them raised hands crackling with essence — the instinctive combat response of cultivators who’d been fighting Charlings with nothing but their cultivation for months. Two tried to run. The instructor shoved the wounded girl behind him and dropped into a combat stance that wouldn’t have helped against a creature with blade-arms longer than he was tall.

”Lower your weapons,” Jayde said. Calm. The same voice she used in combat. ”It’s not a threat.”

”It’s a Charling—”

”It’s mine.”

The word landed. Meifen’s group hadn’t flinched. The original seven stood easy, crossbows lowered, watching the new students’ panic with the patience of people who’d had the same reaction weeks ago and had learned better. One of them — the Grade 4 boy — walked past the mantis to reach the Resolute’s entrance, close enough that the creature’s sensory pits tracked him, and didn’t break stride.

The new students watched the boy walk past a Charling and not die. That did more than Jayde’s order.

The mantis pressed its head-plate against Jayde’s palm. The warm, patient stillness of a creature that had watched her fight and was glad she’d come back. The new students stared. The old students walked inside.

It would take time. It always took time. But the mantis would be here tomorrow, and the day after, and eventually the new students would understand what the old ones already knew: the thing at the entrance wasn’t guarding the dead spot from them. It was guarding it for them.

***

The group was twenty-five now. Fourteen rescued students. One instructor. Shenwei. Meifen’s original seven. Jayde. Eden. Zhi.

The Resolute absorbed them. The ship had been built for a crew far larger than twenty-five, and the berthing compartments that Jayde had sealed during the early months now opened to accommodate the new arrivals.

Eden took the wounded girl straight to the medical bay. Four hours of surgery. The corruption-taint extracted centimeter by centimeter, the tissue cleaned and sealed and packed with the herbal compound that Green had provided.

The girl would keep the leg. Barely.

Food was becoming a concern. The ring supplies were finite. Jayde had calculated the reserves: two months of rations for nine people, stretched across twenty-five, lasted three and a half weeks. She needed to supplement. The Charling ecosystem provided protein — worker castes, properly cleaned and cooked, were edible. Not pleasant. Not nutritious enough to sustain a group long-term. But edible.

Nobody complained about the food. Nobody complained about the four-hour watch rotations or the daily patrols or the crossbow maintenance or any of the hundred small disciplines that Jayde had imposed because the alternative to discipline was death.

They followed her because she kept them alive. That was enough. In the Hollows, that was everything.
