Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 488: Chapter 483: Panthera Final Report

Location:Dragon estate, outskirts of Obsidian City

Date/Time:Late Cinderfall, 9942 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

Three cats slipped through the estate’s gate at dusk.

Small. Unremarkable. The kind of strays that wandered Obsidian City’s alleys in dozens, too common to notice. They moved through the courtyard entrance one at a time — silver, black, gold — and padded across the stone toward the main house with the specific, purposeful gait of animals that knew exactly where they were going.

The estate’s concealment formation closed behind them. The layered ward that Yinxin maintained across the entire property — the formation that hid dragon auras, masked essence signatures, and made the courtyard invisible to anyone outside its boundary — settled back into place.

Inside the ward, the cats changed.

The shift was fast. Three small bodies unfolded into three massive ones — the compressed forms expanding, the fur lengthening, the muscle and bone and chitin-dense claws scaling up from housecat to apex predator in the space of a breath. Lightning crackled briefly across silver fur. The courtyard stones cracked under the sudden weight.

Three Lightning Panthera stood in the warded courtyard, full-sized and unhidden for the first time in eleven months.

Yinxin stepped out in human form. Silver-white hair. Golden eyes. The grey robe that made her look like a merchant’s widow and not the Silver Dragon Queen who managed an empire from a converted house.

Canirr stood at the courtyard’s center. Eleven feet of sleek silver fur streaked with electric blue, pale silver eyes sweeping the estate’s walls with the automatic threat assessment of a reconnaissance specialist who hadn’t stopped scanning since the day his charge fell into the Harrowing. He’d lost weight. The silver fur, which should have gleamed, was dull. Eleven months of continuous fieldwork across a continent, sleeping in shifts measured in minutes, eating whatever the terrain provided.

Suki was behind him. Ten feet of midnight-black fur that absorbed the courtyard’s lamplight the way shadows absorbed sound. Deep purple eyes flecked with gold, watching everything and advertising nothing. The stealth specialist had crossed the western Lower Realm alone for eleven months without being detected by a single human settlement. Nobody knew she existed. That was the point.

Prota filled the courtyard’s south corner. Fourteen feet. The largest. Scarred golden fur, one ear missing, three claw-scars across the left flank, the metal-grafted foreleg that clicked against the stone with each step. Amber-gold eyes carrying the specific weight of a warrior who was nearly nine thousand years old and had spent the last eleven months moving faster than a being his size should have needed to.

They were exhausted. All three. The kind of exhaustion that went beyond physical fatigue into something structural — eleven months of mission-driven endurance that had kept them moving when their bodies had wanted to stop.

They hadn’t stopped. Because stopping meant admitting that their charge was underground and they couldn’t reach her, and Panthera didn’t admit that.

Yinxin looked at them. Three immortal predators standing in her courtyard, waiting to deliver a report to a dragon because the girl they were supposed to protect was sealed inside a mountain.

”Come inside,” she said. ”There’s food.”

The report was delivered in the estate’s map room.

Canirr released the spatial ring’s contents onto the map table. Crystal after crystal, each one containing compressed sensory data. Eleven months of continental reconnaissance. He activated the first one, and the Lower Realm unfolded across the table in three-dimensional projection.

Eastern sector, Canirr’s voice arrived in Yinxin’s mind, precise and clipped. The silver Panthera touched his nose to the projection, expanding the eastern territory. Eight hundred and forty-seven sensors planted. Forty-one worm nests confirmed. Colony depth ranges from thirty meters to two hundred. Growth patterns suggest three are approaching surface-breach threshold within the next eighteen months.

Yinxin studied the projection. Not the rough sketch maps that human cartographers produced. Every mountain pass, every river crossing, every settlement rendered from Panthera sensory data at a resolution no human survey could match.

”The sensor grid?”

One hundred percent coverage in the eastern sector. Every nest monitored. Real-time data on colony movement, growth rate, and subterranean vibration patterns. Canirr stepped back from the table. My sector is complete.

Suki moved forward. The midnight-black Panthera activated her crystals without ceremony. The western Lower Realm expanded across the projection.

Forty-three settlements along the western trade corridor. None aware of my presence. A pause. The deep purple eyes flecked with gold held something that might have been satisfaction in a being less controlled. Eleven nests in the western range. Two are dormant. The rest are active. Sensors planted at every one. I also mapped three routes the Temple uses for prisoner transport between the Lower and Mid Realms. Hidden paths. Warded. I marked them but did not engage.

Yinxin looked up sharply. ”Temple transport routes?”

Confirmed. Used regularly. The wards are Temple-standard — I could smell the formation signature from half a kilometer. Suki stepped back. I did not interfere. The Commander did not authorize direct action against the Temple. But the routes are mapped. When she’s ready, we can close them.

Prota was last. The scarred golden Panthera moved to the table slowly — the metal foreleg clicking on the stone, the massive body carrying eleven months of mountain terrain in the stiffness of joints that had earned the right to ache. He activated his crystals. The northern sector filled the projection.

Northern range. Thirty-seven nests. His telepathic voice was deeper than Canirr’s, rougher, the voice of something old and tired and utterly unwilling to stop. Concentrated along the mountain spine. Geological instability creates deep fissures — the colonies prefer them. Hardest terrain in the Lower Realm. Took me four months longer than it should have.

”The foreleg?” Yinxin asked.

Held. A flicker of amber-gold. It always holds.

The complete Lower Realm. Three sectors stitched together across the projection table. Eighty-nine worm nests total — more than anyone had estimated. Sensor grid at one hundred percent coverage. Trade routes, water sources, mineral deposits, defensible positions, Temple transport corridors. Military-grade terrain intelligence covering an entire continent.

”And Amaya?” Yinxin asked.

Canirr’s pale silver eyes shifted. The faintest movement of his massive head — the Panthera equivalent of a glance toward the window, toward the Academy, toward the sealed portal where the fourth member of their unit had been stationed for eleven months.

Yinxin understood. Amaya hadn’t moved.

Eleven months. The master tracker, the youngest of the four, positioned on the ridge above the Academy with a clear sightline to the sealed portal entrance. Watching. Waiting. Heterochromatic eyes reading every vibration, every essence fluctuation, every hint that the seal might shift or the portal might activate.

Amaya hadn’t left her post. Not once. Not for food, not for rest, not for the simple mercy of changing position. She’d been sustained by cultivation, by rations Canirr had delivered on his passes through the area, and by the specific, absolute devotion of a Panthera who had accepted a vigil and would not abandon it until her charge walked out or the portal crumbled.

She reports every three days, Canirr’s voice arrived in Yinxin’s mind — the telepathic communication that Panthera used as naturally as humans used speech. Clear. Precise. No warmth. No change. The seal holds. The portal is dormant.

”Is she—”

She will stay until the portal opens. That was the assignment.

The assignment. Not a request. Not a duty. A Panthera assignment, which was something between a military order and a sacred oath, and which ended only when the objective was achieved, or the Panthera died.

Yinxin fed them. The estate’s kitchen produced enough meat for three human families; the Panthera ate it in minutes. Prota ate lying down, the metal foreleg extended, the massive scarred body finally allowing itself to rest now that the report was delivered. The oldest warrior. Nearly nine thousand years. He’d lost charges before — the metal foreleg was proof, the replacement for a limb lost defending someone he hadn’t been fast enough to save. Every mile he’d covered in the northern territories had been driven by the specific, grim determination of a being who refused to fail twice.

Suki ate in her corner, the midnight-black form nearly invisible against the wall, consuming food with the efficient speed of someone who’d been eating on the move for eleven months. The stealth specialist. Three thousand eight hundred years of learning to disappear. She’d crossed the western Lower Realm like a ghost — villages that sat directly in her patrol path had never known a ten-foot predator was passing through their farmland at night. The western map was her masterwork. Every approach, every choke point, every blind spot in the terrain catalogued by a being whose survival depended on knowing where to hide.

Canirr ate last. The silver Panthera watched the other two settle before allowing himself the luxury of lowering his guard. The reconnaissance specialist who’d spent eleven months scanning every horizon for threats to a charge he couldn’t reach. The commander who’d held the unit together after the failure, who’d turned grief into mission parameters and guilt into continental coverage. Four thousand two hundred years of service, and this year had been the hardest.

His pale silver eyes closed. Just for a moment. The first time he’d stopped scanning since the day Jayde fell.

When they opened, they found Yinxin watching him.

”She’ll come out,” Yinxin said. The golden eyes steady. The voice of a dragon who had known Jayde’s true nature since the day they’d met and had never doubted what the girl could survive. ”The portal opens when the year ends. She’ll walk out.”

Canirr regarded her. The pale silver eyes held the specific, professional assessment of a warrior evaluating a statement against eleven months of evidence.

We know, he said. That’s why we finished.

The map glowed on the table behind them. The complete Lower Realm. Every nest. Every sensor. Every mile.

Three Panthera who’d failed to protect their charge had spent eleven months turning that failure into the most comprehensive intelligence package the Lower Realm had ever produced. Not redemption. Redemption implied forgiveness. This was the next best thing: making sure that when their charge walked out, the world she walked into would be mapped, monitored, and understood.

On the ridge above the Academy, Amaya watched the sealed portal. Heterochromatic eyes — silver and gold — reading the stone for the thousandth time. The mottled grey-and-silver fur stirred in the mountain wind. The golden runic markings on her nose caught the last of the evening light.

Eleven months. Twenty-nine days remaining.

She hadn’t moved. She wouldn’t move. The vigil held until the portal opened or the Panthera who kept it died, and Amaya intended to be standing when the stone split and her charge rode out on whatever she’d tamed in the dark.

Four Panthera. Three ranging a continent. One watching a stone.

The work was done. The wait was almost over.
