They stripped the dead spot to the stone.

Jayde started with the Resolute. The larger ship was raw material now — too damaged to ever fly again, too valuable to leave behind. It came apart under her hands in systematic sections. Hull plating first, the chitin-alloy panels that she’d used for armor templates, each one tagged and stored in her ring. Then the internal systems: wiring harnesses, conduit runs, power couplings, the environmental processors that still held residual charge. The medical bay equipment went into Eden’s ring — every scalpel, every clamp, every vial of the antiseptic compound that Eden had synthesized from Charling enzymes. The navigation console yielded processed alloys and crystal components that would become crossbow mechanisms. Every piece of the Resolute that could be melted, reformed, or forged into weapons went into the rings.

The shuttle was different.

The shuttle she needed intact. Every component dismantled with surgical precision, each piece labeled, mapped, stored in the exact sequence she’d need for reassembly. The hull panels came off in numbered sections. The engine components were wrapped individually. The control systems, the navigation array, the atmospheric processors, the structural frame — all of it catalogued and distributed across multiple rings with redundancy backups. The shuttle wasn’t scrap. It was a ship that could fly again, and a working ship was too valuable to turn into crossbow parts.

The fabricator — the single most valuable piece of technology in the Harrowing — dismantled into its seven modular components and distributed across three rings.

Eden worked the medical bay. Shenwei organized the structural dismantling of the Resolute. Meifen coordinated the students into teams — one group stripping the Resolute’s lower decks, another carefully packaging the shuttle components, a third collecting everything else: scrap metal from the dead zone floor, abandoned tools, mineral deposits, corruption-crystals that had formed on the cavern walls. Anything that might have value.

”Everything,” Jayde said when Meifen asked what they were taking. ”The Resolute is weapons. The shuttle is transport. Everything else is material. We leave stone.”

Twelve hours. The dead spot that had sheltered them — that had hidden them from the colony’s sensory architecture, that had held the ships and the mantis and the fragile beginnings of an army — reduced to an empty cavern. The rings were full. Jayde’s ring alone held tonnes of processed alloy — enough to arm an army if the fabricator held and the time allowed. Eden’s held a complete field hospital. Shenwei’s held structural material for barricades and fortification. The shuttle was in Jayde’s ring alone. She wasn’t trusting that to anyone.

She looked at the empty space one last time. The stone floor where the Resolute had sat was scored with the ship’s landing marks — shallow grooves worn by months of weight. The maintenance alcove was bare. The medical bay was bare. The command post was bare.

Six months of survival, packed into rings and ready to march.

”Move out,” she said.

***

The Mid Ring was a ghost tunnel.

The emptiness that had been unsettling during Jayde’s scouting run was absolute during the march. No Ravagers. No Chorus clusters. No Lurker pits. No worker columns flowing through their endless circuits. The tunnels that had hummed with the collective vibration of millions of organisms were silent. The students’ footsteps echoed.

Twenty-five people moved through the dark in a column formation that Jayde had drilled until it was muscle memory. Jayde on the mantis at point, scouting two hundred meters ahead. Meifen at the rear with two crossbow-armed students covering the retreat. Eden in the center with the medical kit and Zhi coiled against her throat. Shenwei managing the column’s pace: fast enough to cover ground, slow enough that the weakest walkers didn’t fall behind.

The march rhythm settled within the first hour. Walk. Stop. Listen. Walk. The mantis’s sensory pits swept the tunnels continuously, reading vibration and pheromone traces for anything that hadn’t joined the mobilization. The readings were mostly empty.

Mostly.

They found the first stragglers on Day 177.

Not students. Charlings.

A cluster of Ravagers — five of them — huddled in a side tunnel with the disoriented stillness of predators that had been left behind by a migration they couldn’t follow. Something was wrong with them. The coordination that made Ravager packs lethal was absent. They moved in jerky, unsynced patterns, bumping into each other, mandibles cycling on nothing. The pheromone signal that organized their pack behavior had been overwhelmed by the Queen’s mobilization frequency, and their local coordination had collapsed.

Jayde killed them quickly. Compound crossbow. Five bolts. Five relay hubs. The Ravagers dropped without mounting a coordinated defense. Broken toys left behind by an army that had moved on.

She found more over the next two days. Scattered Ravagers. A lone Siegebreaker with a cracked spray chamber, abandoned by its escorts. A cluster of Ironbacks in a dead-end tunnel, their defensive formation locked in place with nothing to defend against. The mobilization had swept the ecosystem clean, and the creatures that couldn’t keep up had been left behind like debris after a flood.

The fights were brief. Uncoordinated enemies against crossbow-armed troops. The students handled most of them without Jayde’s intervention — the military discipline holding, the firing lines forming automatically, the bolt-reload-fire rhythm carrying them through encounters that would have been lethal three months ago and were now just obstacles.

They found the first students on Day 178.

Three of them. Two girls and a boy, Grade 4, crammed into a crevice in the tunnel wall with a formation barrier across the opening that was barely holding. They’d been there for weeks. Maybe months. The barrier was cracked, patched with essence that was nearly depleted. Their cultivation signatures were threadbare — everything they had poured into the barrier that kept the tunnel out.

Meifen found them. Her crossbow team was sweeping a side passage when the barrier flickered, and a face appeared in the gap — hollow-eyed, gaunt, the specific look of someone who’d given up hope so completely that the arrival of other humans didn’t register as real.

”We’re here,” Meifen said. The voice she’d learned from Jayde. Calm. Certain. ”Lower the barrier. We’re taking you with us.”

The barrier dropped. The three students collapsed. Eden was there in sixty seconds with the medical kit.

They found more over the next two days. A pair of students two kilometers further north, hiding in a Lurker pit that the Lurker had vacated. They’d been eating the silk lining — the corruption-silk that lined Lurker traps, technically digestible if you were desperate enough. They were desperate enough. A solo instructor — the third rescued, bringing the total to three of the original ten — who’d been running alone through the tunnels for months, surviving on worker-caste protein and the specific, grim stubbornness of a man who’d decided that dying underground was unacceptable and had enforced the decision through willpower alone. He was skeletal. He was upright. He took the crossbow Jayde offered and tested the draw weight before he took the water.

A group of seven students who’d built a barricade across a wide tunnel and had been holding it with cultivation strikes that got weaker every day. Their leader — a Grade 4 woman in her late twenties with haunted eyes and steady hands — had organized watch rotations and rationing for her group with no training beyond common sense and the refusal to let anyone else die. Jayde promoted her to squad leader on the spot.

Each group absorbed into the column. Fed. Armed if crossbow supplies allowed. Given a position in the march formation. The military structure that Jayde had built with twenty-five people expanded to absorb forty. Fifty. Sixty.

The students who’d been surviving alone for months looked at the column — the crossbow-armed troops, the mantis at the point, the formation discipline, the woman riding a Charling who spoke in a voice that expected obedience and got it — and they understood that whatever this was, it was better than what they’d had.

They followed. Nobody had to be convinced.

Day 179. Seventy-three people.

The Outer Ring boundary appeared as a change in the tunnel architecture — the formation-cut stone of the deeper levels giving way to the mandible-carved organic tunnels of the upper containment. The bioluminescent light brightened. The air thinned. The corruption energy that had been pressing against Jayde’s sealed Crucible Core for months eased as they climbed toward the surface.

The mantis slowed. Its sensory pits read the Outer Ring’s environment with the careful attention of a creature entering unfamiliar territory. The mantis had never been this high. Its entire life had been the Mid Ring — the predator ecology, the Ravager territories, the dead spot at the boundary. The Outer Ring was different. Lighter. Less corrupt. The ambient energy signature that the mantis’s chitin was designed to absorb was thinner here.

It adjusted. The chitin lightened slightly, the translucent plates shifting to compensate for the reduced corruption energy. The blade-arms stayed folded. The sensory pits stayed alert.

”Almost there,” Jayde said. Her hand on the head-plate.

The mantis pressed back against her palm. Warm. Ready.

Day 180. The Outer Ring.

The tunnels were populated again — but with Outer Ring castes. Scythlings on the walls, the ambush predators holding their positions with the patient stillness that made them dangerous to the unprepared. Ironback clusters held tunnel junctions. Lancer swarms in the wider passages, the wasp-analogue clouds moving in the loose, chaotic patterns that were their normal behavior. Not mobilized. Not organized. The Outer Ring’s ecosystem still functioning normally, the Queen’s mobilization call either not yet reaching this level or not yet obeyed.

The students handled the encounters with the efficiency of people who’d been fighting Mid Ring predators for months and found Outer Ring castes insultingly easy by comparison. Scythlings that would have terrified a Grade 5 student on their first day died to single crossbow bolts. Ironback clusters that could have pinned a cultivation team for hours were bypassed or destroyed in seconds. Lancer swarms that required team coordination to survive were cut down by crossbow volleys before they could close to sting range.

Jayde watched her students kill Outer Ring Charlings the way a general watches veterans fight conscript-level enemies: with professional satisfaction and the knowledge that harder things were coming.

The first protection base was two days north. Seventy-three people, loaded rings, a mantis, and the knowledge of what was assembling below.

They marched. Seventy-three people carrying two dismantled ships and the knowledge to turn them into an army’s arsenal.
