Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 461: Chapter 456: The Arsenal

Location:Mid Ring, Vel’thari Containment — Dead Spot, Shuttle Workshop

Date/Time:Late Emberrise, 9942 AZI — Day 120, 245 days remaining

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The fabricator had been running for thirty-four days.

Jayde fed it alloy in the morning and pulled finished components in the evening, and in between the machine did what Federation machines did: worked. Precisely, tirelessly, to tolerances that made every hand-crafted tool on Doha look like a child’s drawing next to a photograph. The shuttle’s cargo bay had become an assembly floor, finished components arranged on improvised racks along the bulkheads, sorted by project and priority. The datapad tracked everything: production schedule, material consumption, quality notes.

The weapons came first.

Three siege bows sat in their cases on the port-side rack. Heavy compound geometry. The limbs were twice the thickness of the standard crossbow’s, the cam pulleys larger, the riser blocks reinforced with internal bracing that distributed the stored energy across six load-bearing points instead of two. These weren’t shoulder weapons. They were ground-mounted. Jayde cocked them by planting both feet on the stirrup brace, gripping the string with both hands, and driving upward with her entire enhanced body. Three hundred pounds of peak draw. Even her Grade 2 Elite frame felt the pull. The cams rolled over center and held the force in the limbs like a coiled spring the size of her forearm.

The bolt for a siege bow was different from the standard ammunition. Longer. Heavier. A shaft as thick as her thumb, tipped with a broadhead that the fabricator had machined from the densest alloy in the debris field: four blades radiating from a hardened penetrator core designed to concentrate the impact force on a point the size of a coin. The bolt weighed three times what the standard compound crossbow bolt weighed, and it hit with a force that had nothing to do with cultivation and everything to do with mass times acceleration.

She’d tested one against a double-thickness chitin plate, two worker dorsal sections stacked and lashed together — the closest simulation she could build for Ironback or Siegebreaker armor. The bolt had gone through both layers and embedded itself in the deck plating beneath. Clean. Through the armor that had defined the upper limit of what their standard weapons could do.

The siege bows lived in the ring. Pre-loaded, pre-cocked, ready to fire. Three of them, each one a single devastating shot. The tactical doctrine was simple: pull from ring, fire, store, pull the next. No field reloading. No cocking under pressure. The cocking happened in the workshop, in safety, with time to do it right. The firing happened in the field, in the fraction of a second between drawing from the ring and pulling the trigger.

For heavy-armored targets. Ironbacks. Siegebreakers. Anything with chitin thick enough to stop a standard bolt.

The repeating crossbow was Jayde’s favorite.

She’d designed it across three evenings on the datapad, working from Federation semi-automatic weapons systems she remembered from her first life and adapting the mechanics to what the fabricator could produce. The principle was simple: a magazine feed that cycled bolts into the rail as the string was drawn, allowing twelve shots before reloading.

The execution was anything but simple. The magazine was a vertical housing mounted on top of the rail, gravity-fed, holding twelve standard bolts nose-down in a channel. Each time the string was drawn, a cam-driven feed mechanism pushed the lowest bolt into the rail, aligning it with the string’s cradle. Draw, fire, draw, fire. Twelve times. The feed mechanism was the hardest component to machine — the tolerances had to be exact, or the bolts would jam or misalign, and a misaligned bolt in a two-hundred-bolt-per-quiver combat situation was the difference between a kill shot and a wasted round.

She’d built and scrapped three feed mechanisms before the fourth worked. The fourth worked perfectly.

The draw weight was lower than the single-shot compound: a hundred and twenty pounds, cocked via a lever mechanism built into the stock rather than a stirrup. The lever gave her a three-to-one mechanical advantage, forty pounds of actual effort per cycle, achievable one-handed if she braced the stock against her hip. Fast. Fluid. The kind of reload that a trained user could perform in the time between breaths. Not as devastating per bolt as the siege bow. Not armor-piercing against heavy plate. But twelve bolts in rapid succession, aimed at joints and sensory pits and relay hubs, would take apart anything that wasn’t wearing double-thickness armor.

She’d loaded a magazine and fired all twelve into a target chitin at fifteen paces. The grouping was tight — a spread she could cover with both hands. The feed mechanism hadn’t jammed. The twelfth bolt hit within a hand’s width of the first. The lever-cock was smooth enough that she could maintain her sight picture between shots, adjusting aim without breaking stance.

Two repeating crossbows completed. One primary, one spare. Both lived in the ring, magazines loaded.

Eden’s crossbow was different.

Lighter. Shorter limbs, lower draw weight: eighty pounds, cocked via a simple lever that Eden’s unenhanced body could operate without strain. Six-bolt magazine, same gravity-feed principle but scaled down. The stock was narrower, fitted to Eden’s hands, the trigger pull calibrated to the doctor’s grip strength.

”I’m not you,” Eden had said when Jayde started the design. ”I don’t need to punch through plate. I need to hit what I’m aiming at, fast, from a position I can hold without shaking.”

She was right. Eden’s targets were different from Jayde’s targets. The doctor aimed at anatomy: joint membranes, sensory pits, relay hubs, the specific neural nexus points she’d mapped across months of dissection. Precision over force. A lighter bolt at a weaker joint was more lethal than a heavier bolt at a thick plate, if the lighter bolt hit the right spot.

Eden had tested hers by firing all six into a chitin plate marked with the relay hub coordinates she’d plotted from her dissection data. Six shots. Six hits within the target zone. The pattern was clinical.

”If the hub is where I mapped it,” Eden said, examining the grouping, ”any one of these is a kill shot.”

On her shoulder, Zhi watched the testing with dark eyes that tracked each bolt from rail to target. The serpent’s wings were fully extended now, the translucent membranes catching the shuttle’s amber light, the capillary network beneath them thickened and strengthened across weeks of growth in the dead spot’s safety. Zhi was larger than the cistern creature. Not dramatically. Enough. The body that had been forearm-length was approaching elbow-length. The scales had settled to a permanent palette: deep ocean blue along the spine, forest green along the flanks, gold at the wing-edges and the tip of the tail.

[Eden is scary when she does the aiming thing,] Zhi observed through the bond.

Eden smiled. It was the not-kind smile.

The bolts filled three fabricated quivers.

Standard compound bolts: two hundred, machined in batches of twenty, each one identical to the last. Federation-alloy shafts, four-bladed broadheads, fletched with stabilizer fins the fabricator cut from thin composite sheeting. Twenty minutes per bolt. Sixty-seven hours of fabricator time. Jayde had run the machine through four full production cycles, sleeping in shifts while the fabricator worked, feeding it alloy sections from the debris field between naps.

Siege bolts: thirty. Heavier shafts, larger broadheads, each one hand-inspected after fabrication because a flaw in a bolt carrying that much energy would shatter on impact instead of penetrating.

Eden’s bolts: one hundred and twenty. Lighter shafts, narrower broadheads designed for joint penetration rather than plate-cracking. Sharper tips, thinner profiles, optimized for the precision-over-force doctrine that the doctor’s combat style demanded.

All reusable. The Federation alloy didn’t deform on impact the way stone tips had. A bolt that went through chitin could be pulled, cleaned, and fired again. The ammunition wasn’t infinite, but it was close enough that Jayde stopped counting individual bolts and started thinking in quivers.

The exoskeleton took the longest.

The frame Jayde had found in the Resolute’s cargo hold was standard-issue, sized for a Federation soldier of average build. Neither Jayde nor Eden was a Federation soldier of average build. Jayde’s cultivation-enhanced frame was broader through the shoulders and denser through the limbs than any baseline human. Eden was smaller in every dimension.

Two frames. Two complete rebuilds.

The fabricator produced new joint housings, resized strut lengths, and customized mounting plates. Jayde worked from the original engineering schematic she’d found in the exoskeleton’s maintenance manual, stored in a chip reader she’d powered from the shuttle’s reactor. The schematic was detailed. The modifications were not. Every adjustment was a design problem: how to scale a hydraulic piston for Jayde’s enhanced musculature without overloading the frame, how to reduce the load-bearing architecture for Eden’s lighter body without sacrificing the structural integrity that kept the suit from collapsing under force.

She solved them one at a time. Two weeks of fabrication. Two weeks of assembly, testing, disassembly, correction, reassembly.

The finished suits were not elegant. Jayde’s frame was heavy, the struts thicker than the original spec, the hydraulic pistons oversized to match her enhanced output. The power cells sat at the hips and spine, compact, independent. Zhi had confirmed each one individually: [Cool-dim. Small warm. Like the pad-warm. Safe.]

She strapped in. Tightened the mounting points. Stood.

The hydraulics engaged. Servos whirred at the joints, amplifying each movement, translating her enhanced muscle output through mechanical advantage into something significantly greater. She flexed her hands. The gauntlets responded with a precision that was better than she’d expected: each finger tracked, each grip calibrated, the force multiplied without losing the fine control that combat required.

She picked up a section of hull plating that weighed more than she did. Lifted it. Held it overhead. Set it down. The effort registered in her arms as moderate — the kind of weight she’d normally strain to move, handled with the casual ease of picking up a supply crate.

”How does it feel?” Eden asked.

”Like being twenty years younger with twice the muscle.” Jayde rotated her shoulders. The frame moved with her, the joints tracking, the hydraulics compensating. ”And like wearing a very uncomfortable backpack.”

Eden’s suit was lighter. Sleeker. The struts were thinner, the hydraulics scaled down, the mounting points adjusted for a body that was five-foot-two and wiry instead of five-foot-eight and cultivation-dense. The power cells were the same, the force multiplication proportionally lower but still transformative: Eden, who had been carrying chitin armor plates that weighed a quarter of her body weight, could now move in full armor without the weight registering.

”I could perform surgery in this,” Eden said, flexing her fingers in the gauntlets. ”The fine motor is good enough.”

”Can you shoot?”

Eden picked up her crossbow. Shouldered it. Aimed. The suit’s arm tracked smoothly, the hydraulics absorbing her natural tremor, the sight picture steadier than her unassisted hands could hold.

”Better than without it,” she said.

***

The armor came last.

Not the crude mandible-plates Eden had been wearing since the fortress. Proper armor. Hybrid construction: Charling chitin laminated onto Federation alloy backing plates, the two materials bonded with an adhesive compound the fabricator synthesized from debris-field chemicals. The chitin provided the outer surface — biologically evolved to absorb impact from mandible strikes and tunnel collisions. The alloy backing provided structural rigidity and edge-resistance that the chitin alone couldn’t match.

Jayde had cut the chitin sections from their stockpile of harvested Charling parts, selecting the thickest dorsal plates from the largest workers they’d killed. Eden had mapped the optimal coverage zones from her anatomy studies — not full plate coverage, which would restrict movement, but targeted protection over the areas most likely to take hits: chest, shoulders, forearms, thighs.

The finished sets were ugly. Functional. The mottled amber chitin over dull silver alloy looked like something built in a war zone by people who cared about survival more than aesthetics. Which was exactly what it was.

Zhi had watched the armor assembly with particular attention. The serpent perched on the shuttle console throughout the fitting process, dark eyes tracking each piece as it was shaped and mounted, the small head tilting at angles that suggested evaluation rather than curiosity.

[The clicking-thing shells,] Zhi said through the bond. [You’re wearing the clicking-thing shells.]

”We are,” Eden confirmed.

[That’s...] A long pause. The ancient soul processing something the child’s mind found deeply strange. [That’s like wearing the monster’s skin. Is that allowed?]

”In a war,” Eden said, ”you use what works.”

[Oh.] Another pause. The child’s mind turning the concept over, examining it from angles that were partly six years old and partly older than the seal. [I think the clicking things would be angry if they knew.]

”Probably.”

[Good,] Zhi said, with a satisfaction that was older than the child’s voice carrying it.

On the datapad, the production log showed the full inventory:

Siege bows: 3 (pre-loaded, ring-stored)Repeating crossbows: 2 (12-bolt magazines, ring-stored)Eden’s precision crossbow: 1 (6-bolt magazine)Standard bolts: 200Siege bolts: 30Precision bolts: 120Exoskeleton frames: 2 (fitted, tested, power cells confirmed cool-dim)Hybrid chitin-alloy armor: 2 sets (targeted coverage, fitted)Compound crossbows (original): 3 (backup)

Jayde looked at the inventory. Thirty-four days of fabrication. A debris field of raw material converted into a weapons system that no cultivator on Doha had ever imagined, because no cultivator on Doha had ever needed physics when they had essence.

Jayde needed physics. Physics was all she had inside the Harrowing.

And now she had enough of it.

[Are we ready?] Zhi asked. The serpent was perched on the shuttle’s console, wings spread, scales shimmering in the amber light with the steady confidence of a creature that had watched an arsenal grow piece by piece and understood, in whatever way a six-year-old ancient god understood things, that the balance had shifted.

[Before, we hid from the clicking things,] Zhi continued, unprompted. [Now we have the shells and the sharp things and the hard suits. Before, the clicking things came and we ran. Now—]

The serpent paused. The dark eyes moved from the siege bows on their rack to the exoskeletons on their stands to the quivers of bolts lined along the bulkhead.

[Now maybe they should run from us.]

Eden looked at Jayde. The not-kind smile was back.

”Almost,” Jayde said. ”Tomorrow we test the full kit. Outside the dead spot. Against something bigger than a worker column.”

Eden checked her crossbow’s magazine. Checked the exoskeleton’s power cells. Checked the bolt quiver on her hip. Checked the chitin-alloy plates on her shoulders.

”I’m ready,” she said.

Day one hundred and twenty. Two hundred and forty-five remaining.

The arsenal was built. The dead spot had given them the time and the materials and the silence. Tomorrow, the clicking would learn what Federation engineering and Charling anatomy research and two hundred days of patience had produced.

Tomorrow, the janitors would meet the guards.
