Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 458: Chapter 453: The Shuttle

Location:Mid Ring, Vel’thari Containment — Dead Spot, Deeper Debris Field

Date/Time:Late Ashwhisper, 9941 AZI — Month 3 of the Harrowing

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The smell hit before the light did.

Recycled air. Stale, metallic, carrying the faint chemical signature of atmospheric scrubbers that had been running on minimal power for longer than anything should have been able to run on minimal power. Jayde stopped at the hatch and breathed it in, and the breath went all the way down to the bottom of a sixty-year career and landed there like a key fitting a lock.

She knew that smell. Every Federation officer knew that smell. It was the smell of sealed environments, of ships and stations and shelters where the air was a finite resource, and the scrubbers were the difference between breathing and not breathing. It meant enclosed space. It meant machinery. It meant the quiet hum of systems doing their job in the dark while the crew slept or worked or died, and the systems kept humming because nobody had told them to stop.

The shuttle sat at the edge of the deeper debris field, half-buried in dimensional rubble that had packed around its hull across centuries of settling. Smaller than the Resolute. Transport class. No weapons hardpoints, no stealth plating, no sensor arrays. A personnel and cargo carrier, built for moving people and material between ships and surfaces, designed to be reliable rather than fast and forgettable rather than formidable.

Jayde had flown these. Not this specific shuttle. This class. Her hands knew where every control should be, the way a pianist’s hands know the keyboard even in the dark. She’d logged hundreds of hours in transports like this during the rebellion: supply runs, extraction flights, the unglamorous logistics work that kept a rebel fleet operational while the combat ships got the glory.

She’d cleared the entry hatch with a pry bar from the ring supplies. The seal had held, which meant the interior atmosphere was intact. Which meant the scrubbers were running. Which meant somewhere in this shuttle, something was still generating power.

Eden stood behind her with Zhi coiled around her forearm, the serpent’s scales a steady deep blue in the dead spot’s safety. The dark eyes were wide, tracking the hatch, reading the ship as Zhi read everything: cautiously, with the ancient awareness that recognized old things and the child’s mind that wanted to know what they were.

[Old,] Zhi said through the bond. Eden relayed: ”Zhi says it’s old. Older than the other wreckage.”

”It’s been running longer,” Jayde said. ”The atmosphere is sealed. Something’s still powered.”

She stepped through the hatch.

The corridor was narrow, functional, built for traffic not comfort. Her boots on the decking made a sound she hadn’t heard in this life: the hollow ring of military-grade floor plating under a standard-issue stride.

On Eden’s arm, Zhi lifted its head. The dark eyes tracked the corridor with the focused curiosity of a creature encountering something its ancient memories recognized but its child’s mind couldn’t name.

[Old,] Zhi said through the bond. Eden relayed: ”Zhi says it feels old. But different-old from the wreckage outside. This old is... organized. Built.”

”It’s a ship,” Jayde said. ”From where I came from before.”

[You came from a ship?]

”I came from a lot of things before.”

[Oh.] A pause. The child’s mind processing. [Is this why you’re sad-happy? The remembering-sad with the finding-happy?]

”Sad-happy,” Jayde said. ”That’s exactly right.”

The cockpit was intact.

Emergency lighting flickered at the edges of the console: amber LEDs that shouldn’t have been burning after centuries and were burning anyway, because somewhere in the shuttle’s belly, a reactor housing was ticking over on ultra-low standby with the patient, mindless persistence of a machine that had been told to stay awake and had obeyed.

The flight console was standard Federation transport layout: primary controls at the center position, navigation to the left, communications to the right. Switches. Dials. Readout screens that were dark but undamaged. The dust was minimal; the sealed atmosphere had kept particulates to a level the scrubbers could handle. The console looked used but maintained, as if the last pilot had run the shutdown checklist and stepped away and expected to come back.

Jayde sat in the pilot’s seat.

Her hands found the controls.

The yoke was where it should be. The throttle quadrant on the left, the systems management panel on the right, the emergency brake under the heel of her right foot. Her fingers settled on the switches the way they’d settled on them a thousand times in another life, and for a moment the sealed dimension and the insect colony and the dead spot and the Harrowing and Doha itself fell away, and she was Commander SN1098, and the air smelled like a ship, and her hands were on controls she’d been born — in another body, in another world — to hold.

The viewport was cracked but intact. Through it, the handheld beam she’d salvaged from the Resolute’s emergency stores caught the wreckage of the debris field: alien alloys and Federation steel and the impossible jumble of dimensional refuse that had collected in this dead spot across however many years it had been here. Not the view from a cockpit window in flight. Not the stars. Not the black. Just rubble and silence and the amber glow of emergency lights that had been holding their post longer than most civilizations lasted.

She sat there. Her hands on the yoke. Her boots on the rudder pedals. The seat adjusted to her weight with the quiet click of a mechanism that still worked.

The last time she’d sat in a cockpit like this, she’d been flying a supply run to a forward position that the Federation’s pursuit fleet had been trying to locate for three weeks. She remembered the darkness outside the viewport — real darkness, space-darkness, the kind that had stars in it. She remembered the cargo manifest on the screen beside her knee: ammunition, medical supplies, food for two hundred rebels who were eating what she brought or not eating at all. She remembered the radio silence. The tension in her shoulders. The knowledge that if the pursuit fleet found them, the shuttle’s hull would last about four seconds under focused fire.

She’d landed. Delivered. Flown back to the fleet. One of the early runs, before the rebellion grew large enough that a Supreme Commander couldn’t risk herself on supply flights anymore. Before the war got big enough to need a commander who stayed alive.

But the cockpit had felt the same then as it felt now. The yoke. The throttle. The viewport and whatever was on the other side of it. Some things didn’t change between lives.

Two lives. Two worlds. Both converging in a transport shuttle’s cockpit under a mountain on Doha.

She let herself have it. Ten seconds. The smell. The feel. The memory of what it was to fly.

Then she stood up and went to work.

The reactor housing was in the engineering compartment, aft of the cargo bay. Standard transport layout. Jayde walked the corridor without needing the handheld, the emergency lighting enough to see by, her feet knowing the path.

The reactor was in ultra-low standby. Minimal output. Enough to keep the scrubbers cycling, the emergency lights burning, and the sealed atmosphere intact. It had been in this state for centuries, burning fuel at a rate so low that the supply would last centuries more.

The QFC compartment was beside the reactor housing. Emergency reserve. Standard shuttle complement. The containment case was reinforced composite with a transparent observation panel, designed to let an engineer check core status without breaking the energy seal.

Jayde looked through the panel.

Five Quantum Flux Cores sat in their cradles. Fist-sized. Sky-blue. Pulsing with a gentle, rhythmic light that said alive.

The Pavilion ran on six QFCs. Six cores supporting the entire Nexus. Isha rationed power as ruthlessly as Jayde rationed crossbow bolts. Five more cores would transform everything.

She didn’t open the case.

On Eden’s arm, Zhi had gone still. The focused stillness of ancient memory surfacing.

[The hum,] Zhi said through the bond. Eden relayed: ”Zhi can feel the shuttle’s energy. The reactor hum. It says it’s small, below what the clicking things notice.”

Jayde looked at the serpent. ”Can you tell the difference? Between energy that attracts them and energy that doesn’t?”

A pause. Zhi processing. Then, through Eden: [Yes. The clicking things feel warm-bright. They come for warm-bright. This hum is cool-dim. Cool-dim is safe. Warm-bright is not.]

The tactical mind caught it immediately. Zhi was a living threshold detector. A creature that had spent four lifetimes learning exactly what energy levels brought the Charlings and what levels didn’t. The serpent could tell them, in real time, what they could safely power and what they couldn’t.

”Doc. Zhi just became our most valuable tactical asset.”

Eden looked at her serpent with an expression that was equal parts pride and concern. ”What do you mean?”

”Zhi knows the colony’s detection threshold. What energy is safe. What isn’t.” Jayde looked at the sealed QFC case. ”These cores go in the ring. The whole case. Sealed. I don’t know if the ring would contain the energy if I opened it, and I’m not finding out inside the Harrowing.”

She willed the ring open and stored the sealed containment case whole. The sky-blue glow disappeared into the ring’s space. The shuttle’s emergency lighting didn’t change. The reactor ran independently, its centuries-old fuel supply unaffected.

”We leave the reactor on ultra-low,” Jayde said. ”The shuttle stays lit. We need the light to work.”

[Cool-dim,] Zhi confirmed. [Safe.]

The engineering bay held something better than cores.

A fabrication unit. Compact. Built into the aft bulkhead beside the maintenance station. Standard shuttle complement for field repairs: a device that could take raw material, heat it, shape it, layer it, and produce components to engineering tolerances that no blacksmith on Doha could match. In the ancient days they’d called the technology 3D printing. By Jayde’s era, the machines had advanced so far past those origins that the name had been retired. Fabricator. That was the word for what this was.

The unit had its own power cell. Independent. Low-draw.

[Cool-dim,] Zhi said before Jayde asked. [Like the big hum. Safe.]

”Can this run without attracting them?” Jayde asked, already knowing the answer.

[Yes. Small warm. Not warm-bright. The clicking things wouldn’t feel it.]

Jayde ran her hand along the fabrication unit’s housing. The implications unfolded in her tactical mind with the precision of a battle plan.

The debris field outside was full of raw material. Federation alloys. Alien composites. Metal that could be fed into this unit and shaped into anything the engineering software could design. Better crossbow limbs: compound geometry, pulley systems, the kind of mechanical advantage that turned a crude stone-wood prod into a precision weapon. Metal bolt shafts. Broadhead tips machined to tolerances that hand-knapping couldn’t achieve. Tools. Components. Hardware.

Not guns.

The thought had arrived and been dismissed in the same breath. A fabricator could shape a barrel, a trigger assembly, a stock. It couldn’t synthesize chemical propellant. Without propellant, a firearm was a tube. And even if she could solve the chemistry, which she couldn’t, not with what was available — the acoustic signature of a gunshot in a colony of vibration-sensitive insects would be suicide. The Charlings detected sound through sensory pits evolved for exactly this: percussive vibration through stone. A crossbow was near-silent. A gunshot would bring every Charling in the Mid Ring.

Compound crossbows. Precision bolts. Mechanical advantage, not chemical explosions. The fabricator gave her the means to build the best version of the weapon she already had.

She stored the fabrication unit in the ring.

The maintenance bay yielded the next find: a sealed container of microprocessors. Twenty-four thumb-sized chips in anti-static foam. Federation fabrication. Irreplaceable on Doha. She sealed the container and stored it without opening.

The medical bay was small but complete. Surgical suite, diagnostic instruments, pharmaceutical synthesis unit. All stored. All for later.

And on a charging cradle beside the pilot’s console: a datapad. Standard issue. Thin, durable, designed for field conditions. Its own internal cell, separate from the shuttle’s reactor.

Eden picked it up. Turned it over. The screen flickered to life at her touch. The biometric lock had degraded enough that it accepted any human-temperature contact. The display was dim but functional. Numbers, dates, readouts, all in Federation standard. Useless for Doha timekeeping.

[Cool-dim,] Zhi confirmed. [Very small warm. Safe.]

”The clock’s Federation calibrated,” Eden said, already working through the interface. ”I’ll need to recalibrate.” She pulled the notch-stick from her belt. Eighty-three marks, each one a dim-cycle transition carved with the knife she’d been using since day one. ”Eighty-three days on the stick. I can set the pad to track Doha cycles from here.”

Her fingers moved across the screen, resetting parameters, creating a new calendar framework. Federation training. The muscle memory of a woman who’d configured field equipment in conditions worse than this.

”There.” She held up the pad. The display now showed a simple counter: Day 83. Below it, a blank notes field. ”Better than a stick. And we can use this to catalogue everything. Charling anatomy data, debris field inventory, fabricator designs, supply tracking. All searchable. All organized.”

”Day eighty-three,” Jayde said. She did the math. ”Two hundred and eighty-two remaining.”

The datapad was the kind of tool that changed how you thought about a problem. Not just a timer. A database. Every observation Eden had made about Charling anatomy, every patrol interval Jayde had mapped, every resource in the ring: all of it could go into the pad and be cross-referenced and searched and built on. Three months of knowledge scratched into stone and carved into sticks, suddenly transferable to a system designed for exactly this kind of work.

Eden looked up from the datapad. The screen glowed dim and warm, Zhi-confirmed safe. A Federation tool in Federation hands on a Federation ship, cataloguing a year’s worth of survival data. The notch-stick sat on the console beside the pad, eighty-three marks carved in wood, retired.

”The Charling hierarchy,” Eden said. ”The caste structure from the data dump. We need a proper reference. Everything you know, organized, searchable.” She held up the datapad. ”Let’s build it.”

Jayde looked at the shuttle’s amber-lit corridor. The reactor humming. The scrubbers cycling. The sealed QFC case in the ring. The fabricator in the ring. Twenty-four microprocessors in the ring. Six probes in the ring. A surgical suite and a pharmaceutical synthesis unit and a ship’s worth of stripped components, all sealed and silent and waiting.

Two hundred and eighty-two days. And a conversation about the things that lived in the dark.

”Start recording,” Jayde said.
