Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 493: Chapter 488: The Grinding War, Part 2

Location:Outer Ring, Vel’thari Containment — All six bases

Date/Time:Cinderfall–Flamefade, 9942 AZI — Day 290 - 325

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The Ravagers came on Day 290. Not in a flood. In columns.

Tight, coordinated, pack-hunting formations scaled up to an army’s width. They hit the kill corridors at twice the speed of the Scythlings, flowing through the approach tunnels with the predatory efficiency of organisms bred to fight and taught by a Chorus to fight smart.

The difference was immediate. Scythlings had been target practice — dense, slow, mindless. Ravagers were soldiers. They read the kill corridor geometry inside seconds of entering it and adapted. The leading packs absorbed the first volleys, died, and the packs behind adjusted — spreading to the corridor walls, climbing to the ceiling, using the stacked Scythling dead as cover. The crossbow teams’ firing angles, optimized for a floor-to-ceiling flood, were suddenly aimed at empty air.

Jayde redesigned the pockets on the second day. Elevated positions for ceiling-crawlers. Angled shields for the new approach vectors. Chitin-composite spike strips bolted to the walls at climbing height.

The Ravagers adapted again.

The war became a conversation. Each side reading the other, adjusting, counter-adjusting, the kill corridor evolving through iterations of attack and defense that compressed months of military theory into days of practice. Jayde stopped drawing the corridors on paper and started drawing them on the corridor walls in chalk, because by the time a plan reached the fabricator it was already obsolete.

And then the Lancers found the gaps.

***

The wasp-caste had been in the column from the beginning. House-cat to medium-dog sized. Fast. Airborne. The only caste in the assault that flew.

In the open staging caverns of the Inner Ring they had been a swarming nuisance, a haze above the mass. In the tunnels they were a nightmare.

The Lancers didn’t flow through the corridors like the Ravagers. They flew above them. The tunnel ceilings that had been the upper boundary of the kill corridor’s geometry became the Lancers’ highway — the creatures navigating the narrow space between the ceiling mesh and the stone, translucent wings producing a high-pitched drone that echoed through the passages like a saw cutting metal.

The soldiers learned to dread that sound before they understood what made it.

The mesh held most of them. But the Lancers found the joins — gaps where the panels met, seams that hadn’t been sealed tight enough for something the size of a cat to fold itself through. And their stingers carried corruption-laced paralytic venom that stacked with every hit. One sting numbed a limb. Two slowed essence circulation. Three dropped a cultivator where they stood.

The first Lancer attack came on Day 295. Thirty of them swept through a seam above the second firing pocket and descended in the dive-sting-retreat-dive pattern their species had refined over millennia — rotating attacks, constant pressure, individuals pulling back to recover while others pressed in. Three soldiers were stung before anyone understood what was happening above them. Two survived the venom.

One didn’t.

Jayde redesigned the ceiling mesh that night. Tighter joins. Chitin-composite sealant pressed into every seam by hand, by soldiers standing on each other’s shoulders in the dark between waves.

The Lancers found other routes. Ventilation channels. Maintenance shafts. The hairline cracks in the tunnel architecture that their compact bodies could fold through and their sensory pits could smell warmth beyond.

So she assigned dedicated anti-air teams. Five soldiers at every firing pocket, armed not with crossbows but with wide-spray pheromone disruptors and short-range cultivation. Their sole job was the ceiling. Nothing else.

The anti-air squads developed a culture of their own inside a week. They didn’t look down. Ever. Their world was the mesh — the panels, the seams, the cracks between. They learned to read Lancer behavior the way a sailor reads weather. A drone moving left to right: scouting pass. A drone circling: testing a seam. A drone that stopped: they were through, and the dive was already coming.

”Ceiling! Pocket four!”

The call went up three, four, five times a wave. The anti-air squad would fire disruptor spray into the descending swarm — the chemical scrambling their coordination, sending Lancers spinning into the walls and into each other. The ones that came through the spray met cultivation strikes. Small. Precise. Aimed at the narrow waist that was the caste’s structural weakness. A clean hit there took a Lancer apart in the air.

It worked. Mostly. The casualties dropped from critical to survivable.

But every anti-air squad was five soldiers not firing crossbows, and in a war measured in bolts-per-kill, five fewer shooters in a pocket meant the Ravager waves pushed a few meters deeper before they broke.

Everything cost something. Every solution built a new problem underneath itself.

The war taught that lesson every single day.

***

By Day 300, the dead were a bigger problem than the living.

The Scythling corpses from the opening wave hadn’t been fully cleared when the Ravager columns began. The Ravager dead stacked on top of them. Fifteen days of continuous killing produced something no drill had prepared anyone for.

Mountains.

The primary approach was half-choked with chitin — a slope of dead organisms that climbed from the floor to within arm’s reach of the ceiling, compacted under its own weight, weeping amber through the seams.

The living used the dead as terrain. Ravager packs scrambled up the body slopes and launched from the crest into the firing pockets below, clearing the shield walls entirely. The first time it happened, a squad in the third pocket lost two soldiers before they understood what had changed.

The pile had become a ramp.

So the clearance teams worked between waves. Soldiers dragging Charling corpses into side tunnels and abandoned passages, hauling on the leg joints because there was nothing else to grip, the bodies heavy and slick and edged with chitin that opened gloves and then the hands inside them. Recovery teams stripped bolts and material at the same time, racing the gap between one wave’s end and the next wave’s beginning.

The side passages became charnel halls. Stacked floor to ceiling. Sealed behind formation barriers. The decaying chitin produced a gas that made the adjacent tunnels unbreathable without cloth over the face, and the smell soaked into armor and clothing and skin until washing stopped being a thing anyone attempted.

After three weeks, nobody noticed it anymore. After four, the soldiers rotating through clearance duty had stopped being people who were bothered by dead things.

They were people who moved dead things.

The job kept the corridors clear. Clear corridors kept people alive. That was the whole of the reasoning, and it was enough.

***

The harvest became an industry.

What had been a salvage operation after the Scythling wave was now a production line running two shifts behind every base. Jayde called it the chitin yard, and the name stuck because nobody had a better one.

Cutting crews worked the fresh dead first, while the plates were still flexible enough to separate cleanly at the seams. Sorting crews graded what came off — dorsal plate for bolt heads, limb shell for spear ferrules, the thin translucent sheeting from the joints for anything that had to bend. A third crew ran the mandibles across grinding wheels salvaged from the Resolute, throwing sparks in a passage that smelled of hot mineral and old blood.

The soldiers on yard rotation developed the black humor of people doing something they had decided not to feel. They named the grinding wheels. They kept score. Somebody hung a strip of Ravager shell above the sorting table with a tally scratched into it, and the tally became a competition, and the competition became the reason a woman who had watched her squadmate die on Day 297 could get up on Day 298 and go to work.

Jayde let it run. Morale was a resource like any other, and she was not in a position to be particular about where it came from.

The fabricator turned out bolt heads that hit harder than the originals, and the reserves grew instead of shrinking, and the war became — against every projection she had made — sustainable.

The war was also destroying the people who sustained it. One name at a time.

***

Between waves, in the tunnel behind Base One’s second pocket, somebody found a drum.

It was not a drum. It was a dented alloy ration canister with the lid pried off, and the man beating it had been a Grade 5 cultivator from a farming province eleven months ago and was now a shooter in Meifen’s First Company with a wrapped hand and two dead friends. He beat the canister, and somebody else picked up the rhythm on a shield rim and a third voice started singing a harvest song from a province none of the rest of them were from.

Forty soldiers who had killed for nine hours sat in the amber-slick dark and sang about wheat.

Zhong Huian stood at the junction and listened, arms folded, and said nothing. Fifteen years of teaching combat and nobody had ever told him this part. That an army sings. That it has to.

Jayde heard it from two corridors away and let it run past the point where discipline said she should have stopped it.

The singing died out on its own. The soldiers went back to their pockets. Nobody said anything about it afterward.

***

Meifen’s hands had stopped bleeding three weeks ago.

The skin where the bowstring had worn through had rebuilt itself — not healed, replaced — the new tissue thicker, harder, a different color from the rest of her. She didn’t feel the bowstring anymore. She felt the draw weight, the release, the vibration through the stock. That was all.

The callus was the war.

A Ravager crested the body slope in the primary approach and launched from the top. Three meters of airborne chitin, mandibles wide, aimed at the third pocket.

Meifen tracked it. Drew. Fired from the hip.

The bolt caught it mid-flight and punched through the thorax from below. The creature hit the shield wall dead and slid down the alloy plate, leaving a wet stripe behind it.

She was already reloading. In the primary approach, you reloaded, or you died. There was no third thing.

***

In the western corridor, Bai Shu held a shield wall with four soldiers against twelve Ravagers.

The wall was buckling. The fifth soldier — the one who should have been anchoring the right side — was behind them on the ground with a mandible wound across his thigh that had opened the femoral line. The medic-runner was thirty seconds out.

Thirty seconds is a long time when a shield wall is built for five and holding with four.

She was twenty-nine. Grade 5. A potter’s daughter from the eastern provinces who had entered the Harrowing expecting to cull mindless insects for a year and had ended up bracing a wall against predators that learned from their own dead.

A mandible found the gap between her plate and the one beside it. The alloy screamed. Her boots slid on wet stone. She planted her shoulder into the shield and shoved — not with cultivation, with the flat desperate strength of a woman who had decided that this wall was not going to break because the people behind it were depending on the people in front of it.

The mandible withdrew. The shield snapped home.

The medic-runner arrived. Grabbed the wounded soldier under the arms. Dragged him backward out of the pocket.

Bai Shu didn’t look. The Ravagers hit the wall again.

She held.

***

Eden’s hands were red to the wrists.

The medical station behind the primary approach held eleven patients. Three critical. Five serious. Three walking-wounded getting lacerations sealed so they could go back to their pockets before the next wave.

The critical cases were mandible wounds. Deep. Ravager mandibles were engineered to open Charling shell, which meant they went through human flesh and alloy armor with the same indifference. Eden’s hands moved with the controlled speed of a doctor who had performed battlefield surgery for decades in another life.

Clamp. Suture. Seal. The cultivation-based compounds accelerated tissue repair — not enough to close a mandible wound, which would take days of healing nobody had, but enough to stop the bleeding. Enough to keep someone alive long enough to reach the end of this.

”Stay with me,” Eden said to the soldier on the table. A man in his early thirties. Chest wound where a Ravager had driven a mandible through the gap between breastplate and shoulder cap.

The same gap. The gap that Jayde’s armor design hadn’t been able to close without sacrificing arm mobility. The gap that had killed soldiers and was going to kill more.

”You’re going to walk out of here. You’re going to see the sun again. But I need you to stay with me for the next three minutes.”

The man focused on her face. Blue eyes. Steady hands. A doctor who spoke with a certainty that sounded like a promise.

He stayed.

Zhi coiled tighter around Eden’s neck. The small serpent’s scales had been flickering between stress-green and calm-blue for weeks. It couldn’t help with the surgery. It could only stay close and pulse its presence down the bond.

[I’m here.]

Eden finished the suture and moved to the next patient.

***

Day 310. Forty-seven dead. A hundred and twelve wounded.

Day 320. Ninety-one dead. Two hundred and three wounded.

Jayde stopped sleeping somewhere in that stretch, and nobody could say afterward exactly when. The mantis carried her between the six bases day and night — the creature’s endurance the only reason a single commander could cover six fronts at all. She ate on its back. Made decisions on its back. Watched soldiers die from its back and filed their names in a list that never got any lighter.

The Commander carried the list because there was nobody else to carry it.

***

Day 325. The sound changed.

Jayde was at the primary approach when it came — a deep, rhythmic booming that traveled through the stone rather than the air, that put rings in the water in the canteens and made the loose grit skip on the corridor floor.

She had heard it before. On a ridge half a kilometer above a staging cavern, through a salvaged Federation visor, watching a caste layer pass beneath her for an entire day.

Around her, sixteen hundred soldiers went still, because none of them had.

”Heavy crossbows forward,” Jayde said. ”All approaches. Ballista crews to their positions.”

Nobody asked what it was.

The booming grew louder.

Day three hundred and twenty-five. Forty days remaining.
