Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 489: Chapter 484: The Massing

Location:Outer Ring → Inner Ring boundary, Vel’thari Containment

Date/Time:Blazepeak, 9942 AZI — Day 235-260

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

Jayde went back to look.

A month had passed since the Forge’s completion. The companies drilled daily. The kill corridors were tested and retested. The ballistas had been fired and recalibrated. The defenses were as ready as preparation could make them. What Jayde didn’t have was current intelligence — the recording crystal from her first visit was two months old. The army would be larger now. She needed specific numbers. Formation structure. Speed of advance. The difference between a defense that held and one that broke was the accuracy of the intelligence behind it.

Seven days south. Day and night. The mantis never stopped — its body sustaining the travel pace that months of partnership had refined into a rhythm. Jayde slept in intervals on the creature’s back, waking when the gait shifted, reading the tunnel conditions through the mantis’s posture. The Mid Ring was still a shell. Empty Ravager territories. Abandoned Chorus stations. The silence of an ecosystem that had sent everything it had to a single purpose.

On the seventh day, she reached the Inner Ring boundary.

The army was still there.

***

The staging area had expanded beyond recognition.

The fifty-meter corridor where she’d first observed the army two months ago was buried. The force had outgrown it, spilling into adjacent caverns, flooding connecting passages, filling every tunnel large enough to hold the bigger castes. What had been a single corridor was now a network of staging chambers stretching in every direction, the army’s mass reshaping the Inner Ring’s geography by sheer density. The Praetorians — she counted them first, the highest-priority intelligence — were arrayed in a formation that hadn’t existed during her first visit. Clustered. Grouped around the carrier units. Protective positioning.

She spent the day cataloging.

From a ridge half a kilometer above the staging network, the helmet did the work her eyes couldn’t. The visor — salvaged from the Resolute’s emergency equipment — enhanced visual range to a factor she’d never had to calculate on Doha. Magnification, light amplification, motion tracking. The recording function captured everything the optics detected, storing data directly to the helmet’s internal crystal. She could watch the army from a distance that kept the mantis’s pheromone signature below the colony’s detection threshold and still count individual Praetorians.

The mantis crouched beside her on the ridge, blade-arms folded, sensory pits oriented downward. At this distance, the army was a vibration in the stone and a faint amber glow in the caverns below. The mantis could feel them. Jayde could see them.

She directed the helmet’s targeting system to tag each caste individually. The motion-tracking software isolated organisms by size and silhouette, assigning count markers that accumulated in the visor’s display as she swept the staging network.

Praetorians: nineteen. The helmet tagged each one with a red marker, tracking their positions in real time. Siegebreakers: the count climbed past a hundred before she’d finished the first pass and was still rising. She let the software run. Chorus clusters: twelve, each one positioned at a different section of the formation, their sonic organs registering as distinct acoustic signatures on the helmet’s sensors. Carrier units: thirty-seven, shielded by concentric rings of Ravager escorts. The helmet flagged them as high-priority targets automatically — the motion profile of a protected asset surrounded by guards was a pattern the targeting software had been designed to recognize.

The base-caste biomass defied individual counting. The helmet’s display simply read DENSITY EXCEEDING TRACKING CAPACITY and switched to an estimated volume calculation. Millions. Scythlings and Ironbacks and Lancers and Sappers packed into the staging tunnels, the number rendered not as a count but as a mass estimate that filled the visor’s data field.

The army was complete. Assembled. Waiting.

She was finishing the last observation run when the sound began.

***

Low. So low that Jayde felt it in her sternum before her ears registered it. A vibration that came from everywhere at once — from the stone, from the air, from the army itself. Not the collective footfall of organisms moving. Something else. Something she hadn’t heard before.

The mantis froze.

Every sensory pit locked. The creature’s body went rigid beneath her — not prey-alert, not predator-tension. Something older. Something wired into the mantis’s biology at the species level, a response to a frequency that it recognized even though it had separated from the colony months ago.

The Queen’s call.

The sound intensified. A sustained, bone-deep pulse that resonated through the containment’s stone architecture the way a bell resonates through the air that holds it. The frequency wasn’t a command in the way pheromones were commands. It was a direction. A compass needle made of sound, pointing every organism in the colony toward the same destination.

The army began to move.

Not all at once. The vanguard first — the Scythling carpet surging forward, pouring northward through the main corridor in a flood of pale amber chitin. The sound changed. The Queen’s call remained, the sustained bass note humming beneath everything, but now it was joined by the collective footfall of millions of organisms responding. The corridor filled with motion. The walls trembled.

Then the Ironbacks, the Lancers, the Sappers — following the vanguard in the layered formation that the Chorus clusters maintained with sonic frequencies. Each Chorus unit broadcasting a coordination signal that kept its section moving in step. Twelve sections advancing in sequence, not all at once. Organized. Disciplined. The insects she’d been told were mindless moving with a precision that would have impressed any general she’d ever served under.

Then the Ravagers. Pack by pack. Tight march columns filing forward in escort formation, protecting what came behind them. The sound of their passage was different from the base castes — heavier, sharper, the articulated legs of predators striking stone with purpose rather than instinct.

Jayde watched from the ridge as the army began its march toward the seal.

She watched for five days.

***

It took five days for the column to clear the staging area.

Five days. From the first Scythling to the last carrier escort. Jayde recorded every hour through the helmet’s optics, the visor’s magnification tracking individual organisms across distances that would have been invisible to the naked eye. The mantis sat rigid on the ridge beside her, sensory pits reading the vibration data that the helmet couldn’t capture, while she cataloged the order of march, the spacing between castes, the rest cycles.

The Siegebreakers passed on the second day. Over a hundred of them, each one escorted by a Ravager squad, the bombardier spray chambers pulsing with superheated compound. They moved with the heavy, deliberate pace of siege equipment being wheeled into position. War machines in chitin instead of steel.

The Praetorians passed on the third day. Nineteen of them. The stone cracked beneath their weight. Cathedral-layered chitin so dense that bioluminescent light didn’t reflect off their surfaces but was absorbed. They moved in a protective ring around the carrier units, mandibles the size of tree trunks sweeping the corridor ahead.

The carriers passed on the fourth day. Thirty-seven of them, each one bearing the dark-veined corruption-solvent on its back. The compound pulsed with faint amber luminescence. The real weapon. Everything else — the Scythlings, the Ravagers, the Siegebreakers, the Praetorians — was the delivery system. The carriers were the payload.

The sound was relentless. Five days of chitin on stone. Five days of the low vibration that the mantis transmitted through its body into her spine. She slept in fragments. Ate from the ring. Didn’t move from the ridge. The intelligence was too valuable to miss.

On the fifth day, the last escort Ravagers filed past. The corridor emptied. The staging area, which had held the largest Charling force in the containment’s history, was bare stone.

The silence was disorienting. Five days of constant noise and then nothing. The mantis’s sensory pits swept the empty corridor and found nothing to track.

The army was moving. North. Toward the seal. Toward her people.

***

She followed.

Not closely. The mantis stayed five kilometers behind the column’s rear guard, using the parallel tunnels that the mantis knew and the army didn’t. For five days, Jayde shadowed the army’s advance — measuring its speed, observing its rest cycles, noting how the column behaved when it encountered the bottlenecks that would define her trap strategy.

The data built a picture. The army moved at roughly two kilometers per hour during active march phases. Rest cycles occurred every eight hours, lasting approximately three. The Praetorians set the pace — the elephant-sized organisms couldn’t be rushed, and the column couldn’t advance faster than its slowest element. The bottlenecks were devastating. At every narrowing, the column compressed, backed up, the rear sections halting while the forward sections squeezed through. Hours lost at each one. The army’s own mass was its greatest weakness.

She noted every bottleneck. Every chokepoint. Every passage where the ceiling hung low enough to collapse onto what was underneath. She mapped them on the recording crystal, marking each one with the tactical assessment that five days of observation had earned: collapse here, confuse here, funnel here, kill here.

The mantis had covered this distance in seven days, traveling day and night through optimal routes. The army, constrained by its mass and the limitations of moving millions through tunnels built for thousands, would take far longer.

Jayde calculated. March speed. Rest cycles. Bottleneck delays. The distance from the staging area to the Outer Ring perimeter.

Six weeks. Approximately forty-two days from the start of the march to the first contact with her defenses.

That gap — the difference between a week’s travel and six weeks’ march — was everything. That gap was what she was going to fill with traps.

She turned the mantis north and sprinted for home.

***

Seven days later, she walked into the main fort.

Day 260. One hundred and five days remaining. The army’s advance elements would reach the Outer Ring perimeter in approximately twenty-five days.

She called the war council that evening.

The map table held the updated intelligence. Twenty-five days of observation compressed into the helmet’s recording data — projected onto the table, the army’s departure rendered in the enhanced detail that the visor’s optics had captured. Five days of column. Every caste identified. Every formation detail recorded at magnifications the naked eye couldn’t match.

The room watched.

Nobody spoke for the first two minutes. The helmet data played across the projection — the cavern network, the army filling it, the tagged markers accumulating in the display. Red for Praetorians. Orange for Siegebreakers. Blue for Chorus clusters. White for carriers. The colors multiplied. The numbers climbed. The scale of what was coming became real in a way that words at a briefing couldn’t achieve.

A company commander from Base Three — a woman in her early thirties who’d been steady through every drill and every briefing — made a sound. Small. Involuntary. The sound of someone’s courage hitting a wall it hadn’t expected.

Zhong’s dark brown eyes hadn’t left the projection. His jaw was set. The muscles along his neck were rigid. Fifteen years of teaching combat, and nothing in his experience had prepared him for watching an army of millions march toward his students.

One of the younger commanders — Base Five, a man barely into his mid-twenties — stepped back from the table. His hands were shaking. He clasped them behind his back. Held them there. Nobody pretended not to notice.

Meifen didn’t move. The hazel eyes tracked the data the way they tracked everything — calm, measuring, already calculating. First Company’s commander watching the enemy she’d been training to fight and finding the fear, acknowledging it, setting it aside. When the projection showed the Praetorians — the red markers moving in their protective ring around the carriers — her eyes narrowed. Not with fear. With focus.

Eden stood in the back. The doctor’s blue eyes were clinical. Reading the numbers the way she read medical data — casualties per hour, triage capacity, supply burn rate. The math behind the fear. The math that would keep people alive.

Shenwei was the one who broke the silence. The instructor who’d survived alone in the Mid Ring for months, who’d walked through the dark without support, who knew better than anyone in the room what it felt like to face the containment alone.

”By the flames,” he said quietly.

”Six weeks from departure to arrival,” Jayde said. ”The advance elements will reach us first — Scythlings and light castes. We have approximately twenty-five days before they make contact with our southern perimeter. The main body follows. The Praetorians and carriers arrive last.”

She expanded the map to show the Mid Ring’s tunnel network between the army’s current position and the Outer Ring.

”This is where we fight first. Not at our perimeter. In the tunnels they have to cross to reach us.” She traced routes on the map. ”Tunnel collapses at strategic chokepoints. Pheromone confusion zones that split the column. Deadfall positions. Pit traps lined with alloy spikes. Every bottleneck that slowed them during the march becomes a killing ground.”

Zhong studied the projection. ”You’re going back out there.”

”Thirty engineers. My best. On rotation. We move ahead of the column, build the traps, fall back. Leapfrog defense.” She looked at the room. ”The army that reaches our perimeter should be bleeding, disorganized, and missing a significant number of its Siegebreakers and carriers. By the time they see a crossbow, the war should already be half won.”

”And if the traps aren’t enough?”

”Then we have kill corridors, ballistas, siege lances, and sixteen hundred soldiers who know what they’re fighting for.” She paused. ”The traps are the first layer. Not the last. Every Siegebreaker that dies in a tunnel collapse is one my ballistas don’t have to stop. Every carrier that falls into a spike pit is one less load of solvent aimed at the seal. We don’t need to kill the whole army in the tunnels. We need to kill enough of the things that matter.”

She looked at each face around the table. Zhong. Shenwei. The company commanders. Meifen, steady as stone.

”Twenty-five days. Then the advance elements reach our perimeter. Then the war starts for real. Everything we do between now and then is the difference between holding and breaking.”

The war council broke. Trap teams to organize. Routes to plan. Fabricator producing spike plates and collapse charges and pheromone canisters for the tunnel gauntlet.

Jayde stood at the map table. The red line moving north. Her six bases waiting. Between them, the Mid Ring’s vast tunnel network.

She was going to make every meter of that crossing cost them.
