Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 477: Chapter 472: Green’s Students

Location:Obsidian Academy — Infirmary / Courtyard

Date/Time:Ashbloom, 9942 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The girl’s collarbone was broken.

Green could feel it before she touched it — the disrupted essence flow where bone had separated, the inflammation signature radiating heat through the skin, the specific jagged edge of a fracture caused by impact rather than stress. Training injury. The girl had been sparring with someone stronger and had failed to dodge the overhead strike that her cultivation level wasn’t ready for.

”Hold still,” Green said. Her voice was soft. Musical. The voice that millennia of healing had shaped into an instrument as precise as her hands. ”This will hurt, and then it won’t.”

She set the bone. The girl gasped. Green’s fractured emerald eyes tracked the pain response — pupils dilating, breathing shifting, the involuntary muscle tension that could complicate a reset if the patient moved at the wrong moment. The girl didn’t move. Good. Green’s essence flowed through her fingertips, knitting the fracture, sealing the separation, encouraging the bone’s natural healing architecture to bridge the gap.

Thirty seconds. The collarbone was set. The pain faded to a deep ache that would last two days and then vanish.

”Sling for a week,” Green said. ”No cultivation above Ashborn tier for ten days. If it hurts when you breathe, come back.”

The girl nodded. Slid off the treatment bench. Left.

Green turned to the three figures standing behind her.

”What did I do wrong?”

The junior healers looked at each other. Lian, the oldest, spoke first. She was twenty-three, Verdant-affinity, with steady hands and a calm temperament that Green had identified within the first week of training as the foundation of a genuine healer.

”You didn’t do anything wrong,” Lian said.

”Incorrect. Try again.”

Lian frowned. Replayed the treatment in her mind. Green could see her working through it — the assessment, the set, the essence application, the aftercare instructions.

”The essence application,” Lian said slowly. ”You used a single-point channel through the fingertips. Eden’s protocol for collarbone fractures specifies a three-point spread — fingertips plus palm contact — to distribute the healing energy across the full fracture line.”

”Why does that matter?”

”Because single-point channeling concentrates the healing at the contact site. The ends of the fracture receive full treatment, but the middle section gets less. In a clean break it doesn’t matter. In a jagged fracture, the middle section is where the bone fragments are, and undertreating them can leave micro-fractures that cause problems later.”

Green looked at Lian. The fractured emerald eyes held the expression that her students had learned to read over months of training: correct.

”I used single-point because I’ve been setting bones for more years than you’ve been alive and my essence control is precise enough to compensate for the distribution gap. You haven’t. You won’t. Use the three-point spread.” She turned to the second student. ”Meihui. What else?”

Meihui was smaller than Lian, nervous, with fingers that trembled when she was being evaluated. But her diagnostic sense was sharp — sharper than Lian’s, sharper than the third student’s. Green had learned to read past the trembling to the mind underneath.

”The aftercare,” Meihui said. Her voice was quiet but certain. ”You said no cultivation above Ashborn tier. Eden’s protocol says no cultivation at all for the first five days, then graduated return starting at Ashborn.”

”Why the difference?”

”Because the healing essence you used was your own, and your essence is... different. Stronger. The bone will integrate your healing faster than it would integrate ours. If we set that bone, the five-day restriction applies because our healing essence needs time to be absorbed. Yours doesn’t.”

”Correct.” Green looked at the third student. ”Feiyan. Anything else?”

Feiyan was the youngest. Eighteen. Inferno-affinity, which was unusual for a healer — most healing cultivators were Verdant or Torrent. But Feiyan’s Inferno essence ran hot enough to sterilize wounds by touch, and Green had recognized the potential in the first week. The girl could burn infection out of tissue with a precision that Green’s Verdant-based approach couldn’t match.

”The pain management,” Feiyan said. Her voice carried the careful confidence of someone who’d been wrong enough times to check before speaking. ”You told her it would hurt, then it wouldn’t. But you didn’t use the numbing formation Eden specified for conscious bone-setting. You just... set it.”

”I did.”

”Eden’s protocol says conscious bone-setting without numbing increases patient anxiety in subsequent treatments. The patient associates the healer with pain, which makes them less likely to seek treatment for future injuries.”

Green considered that. A lifetime of setting bones, and the Federation doctor’s protocol had identified a psychological consequence that Green had never considered — because her reputation meant patients came regardless of whether they feared the pain.

”Eden is right,” Green said. ”Use the numbing formation. My reputation precedes me. Yours doesn’t. Until it does, manage the pain.”

The protocols lived in a leather-bound book on the infirmary shelf.

Eden had written them before the Harrowing — three months of concentrated work, the Federation doctor translating sixty years of medical training into instructions that Doha cultivators could follow without understanding the science behind them. The book was organized by injury type: fractures, burns, puncture wounds, essence disruption, cultivation backlash, poisoning. Each entry contained a diagnostic checklist, a treatment protocol, an aftercare schedule, and a list of common errors with corrections.

Green opened it sometimes, late in the evening when the infirmary was empty, and read entries she’d already memorized. Not for the content. For the voice. Eden’s handwriting was small, precise, the careful lettering of a woman who’d been trained to write prescriptions that pharmacists couldn’t misread. The instructions were direct. Clinical. Stripped of the warmth Eden showed her patients and filled instead with the cold clarity of a doctor who understood that instructions needed to work when the person reading them was exhausted, frightened, and working alone.

Step 1: Assess the fracture line. Clean or jagged? Single or compound? If compound, stop. You are not trained for compound fractures. Stabilize and find Green.

That line. ”Find Green.” It appeared throughout the book — the boundary marker where Eden’s protocols ended and Green’s expertise began. The junior healers could handle clean breaks, minor burns, essence disruption, basic poisoning. Anything beyond that: find Green.

Eden had built a system that acknowledged its own limits. Six thousand years of healing, and Green had never thought to do that. Her system had always been simple: bring the patient to Green. Green fixes them. The idea that ”fixing them” could be broken down into steps that other people followed, with clear escalation points for the cases that exceeded their training — that was Eden’s contribution. Not healing. Architecture.

Green had read the book cover to cover in the first week. Had disagreed with perhaps thirty percent of it. Had tested the disagreements systematically over the following months, treating the same injuries using both her own methods and Eden’s protocols, comparing outcomes.

Eden was right more often than Green expected. The Federation doctor’s approach was systematic where Green’s was intuitive. Structured where Green’s was improvisational. The protocols caught errors that intuition missed, because intuition was shaped by six thousand years of doing things one way and the protocols were shaped by millennia of systematic study in a world that had no magic and had learned to heal without it.

Green still disagreed with the other seventy percent. But she taught all of it. Because the protocols weren’t for her, they were for Lian and Meihui and Feiyan, who didn’t have her lifetime of intuition and needed the structure that Eden’s systems provided.

The system outlived the teacher. That was the point. Eden had known, when she wrote the book, that she might not be there to implement it. Green had known, when she read the book, that her own methods were not teachable in the time they had. Eden’s protocols were teachable. Reproducible. Scalable. Three junior healers, trained on the protocols, could handle eighty percent of the Academy’s medical cases without Green’s involvement.

Green was training herself out of a job. The thought amused her. Six thousand years as the indispensable healer, and the most important thing she’d done in the last six months was make herself unnecessary.

Eden would appreciate that. When she came back from the Harrowing — when, not if, because Green refused to entertain the alternative — the doctor would find her protocols implemented, her students trained, and her system running without her. The highest compliment one healer could pay another: your work survived your absence.

She checked on the wyrmlings after the afternoon session.

The courtyard behind the estate’s high walls held two of the three. Shenxin — the middle child, the tactician — was in dragon form, his slate-silver-grey scales catching the afternoon light as he sat perfectly still beside a puddle, watching something in the water with the focused intensity of a creature cataloguing data. The puddle contained a single water-beetle. Shenxin had been watching the beetle for forty minutes. Green knew because she’d checked at the start of the afternoon session and the beetle had been there then.

Huaxin — the youngest, the healer — was asleep in a patch of sunlight, pale pearl-cream scales warm, one small paw curled under her chin, the other stretched toward her brother. Even in sleep she reached for family. The amber eyes were closed.

Green’s fractured emerald eyes softened. These three — rescued, given a birthday because they’d never had one — were the closest thing to her own children she’d ever had. Six thousand years as a healer, and the most unexpected thing that had happened to her was becoming the person who made sure three dragon babies ate their meals, took their naps, and didn’t set anything important on fire.

”Where is Tianxin?” Green asked.

Shenxin’s grey eyes lifted from the beetle. He regarded Green with the measured assessment that was entirely his own — not his mother’s warmth, not his sister’s fire, but a cool, deliberate weighing of how much information to volunteer.

”The hall,” he said. Brief. The tactician’s economy with words, even at three. ”On Jade Street. She went after breakfast.”

”Alone?”

”She said she’d be careful.” The pause that followed carried the specific weight of a sibling who knew what ”careful” meant when Tianxin said it and what it actually produced. ”She took her pendant.”

At least there was that. The pendants were Isha’s work — formation-inscribed tokens he’d given each wyrmling the day they’d held a perfect human form for a full hour. The formations did more than mask the dragon aura. They dulled everything — the silver hair that should have shone like moonlight became flat ash, the eyes that should have burned with draconic intensity became merely unusual, the skin that should have carried the luminous radiance of ancient bloodline became ordinary. The pendants turned three beings who would stop traffic into three children who might earn a second glance but nothing more.

Green closed her eyes. Opened them.

Tianxin — the eldest, the fire, the one who hadn’t stopped moving since the day she’d broken her shell — had discovered the cultivation hall on Jade Street two weeks ago. The hall offered open sessions for young cultivators, and Tianxin in human form — a small girl with silver hair faded to a dull ash by Isha’s pendant, eyes muted to something that looked almost ordinary — had walked in, sat down, and refused to leave.

The first week had been fine. Tianxin watched the demonstrations with the unblinking focus of a creature whose inherited knowledge of essence mechanics predated the Academy’s founding. She asked questions that the instructor found unusually precise for a child her apparent age. She practiced the exercises with an intensity that made the other children nervous.

The second week, she’d stood up during a demonstration, walked to the instructor’s diagram on the wall, and pointed at the section that was wrong.

”That’s not right,” Tianxin had said. Clear. Certain. The voice of a three-year-old dragon whose blood contained knowledge she couldn’t fully articulate but could feel. ”The flow goes the other way.”

The instructor had been confused. Then irritated. Then unsettled, because the small girl was right, and explaining HOW she knew was beyond her — she just knew, the way she knew fire was warm and falling hurt and her mother’s voice meant safe.

The hall had sent a note. Politely requesting that ”the quiet child with the silver hair” be accompanied by a guardian at future sessions.

Green sighed. The sigh of someone who loved a creature that was going to be magnificent and impossible in roughly equal measure for the next several thousand years.

”Stay with your sister,” she told Shenxin. The young silver dragon dipped his head once. Settled back to watching his beetle. Huaxin slept on.

Green walked to the gate. The Jade Street cultivation hall was ten minutes away.

The ancient healer, surrounded by students — human and dragon alike — doing what she was born to do. Teaching. Healing. Chasing after the young ones.

She wouldn’t trade it for anything.
