Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 467: Chapter 462: The Mantis

Location:Mid Ring, Vel’thari Containment — dead spot perimeter

Date/Time:Sparkfall, 9942 AZI — Day 138, 227 days remaining

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

Something had been watching the base for eleven days.

Jayde didn’t see it. Didn’t hear it. Didn’t smell it or taste its chemical trace on the recycled air of the Resolute’s corridors. She felt it. The sensation sat behind her sternum like a fishhook: predator, close, stationary. The Commander’s instinct, honed across sixty years of combat in another life and sharpened to a blade edge by five months of fighting insects in this one. Something was out there. Something that wasn’t moving. Something that watched.

The feeling had started on day one hundred and twenty-seven. A weight at the edge of perception during her evening perimeter check, the kind of awareness that crawled up the back of the neck and settled at the base of the skull and wouldn’t leave no matter how many times she scanned the darkness and found nothing. She’d doubled the sensor checks. Walked every tripwire. Had Zhi sweep the boundary twice a day instead of once, the serpent’s cool-dim/warm-bright readings coming back clean every time.

Nothing on the sensors. Nothing in Zhi’s readings. Nothing in the debris field’s visual sweep. But the feeling stayed, and the Commander’s instinct had kept her alive for sixty years in one life and five months in another, and she’d stopped arguing with it a very long time ago.

She’d swept the dead spot perimeter twice more. Found nothing. The students at the fortress were unaware — Meifen ran their patrols competently and reported nothing unusual. The workers maintained their routes. The Ravager packs stayed in the deeper passages. Everything in the Mid Ring was behaving exactly as expected.

Except the feeling wouldn’t leave.

Day one hundred and thirty-eight. She went out alone.

***

Eden protested. Jayde overruled her. This wasn’t a patrol, and it wasn’t a hunt. This was reconnaissance. One person. Moving quiet. No exoskeleton — the hydraulics hummed at a frequency that might register to whatever was sitting at the edge of perception. Light armor. The repeating crossbow across her back. The siege bow in the ring.

She walked the dead spot’s eastern boundary at dawn, moving along the line where zero-energy met corruption-saturated air. The transition was visible at the soil level: dark, healthy earth giving way to the pale, depleted gray of the Mid Ring’s corruption-starved ground. A border drawn in dirt. On one side, silence. On the other, the faint clicking of colony traffic at distance.

She walked for forty minutes before she found it.

The stillness was what stopped her.

Charlings moved. Worker columns marched. Combat castes patrolled, clicked, adjusted formation. Even stationary Charlings maintained the low-level mandible cycling that kept their sensory pits calibrated. The ecosystem was never still. Every component moved, processed, communicated. Motion was the colony’s language.

This was silence. Absolute, deliberate, chosen silence. The absence of movement so complete that it registered as a presence rather than a void.

Jayde stopped. Scanned. Found it.

At the boundary line. Right on the edge, where dead spot met active territory. Not inside the dead spot. Not outside. On the line itself, as if it had found the exact point where the two energy states balanced and had chosen to occupy it.

A mantis.

Her breath caught. The compound crossbow stayed on her back.

The creature was enormous. Larger than a horse, but built differently from the Ravagers — elongated, vertical, the body held upright on four rear legs with two massive forelegs folded against the thorax in the distinctive prayer posture that gave Earth mantises their name. The chitin was wrong. Not the rust-red of Ravagers or the pale amber of workers. This was lighter. Older. Almost translucent at the edges, as if prolonged exposure to the dead spot’s zero-energy field had thinned the plates the way starvation thins skin. She could see the faint outline of internal structures through the thinnest sections — muscle bundles, nerve channels, the shadowed mass of the thoracic ganglion.

The forelegs were the killing anatomy. Each one as long as Jayde was tall, folded at the joint, the inner edge serrated with chitin teeth that were individually visible at fifteen meters. Not the crude sawtooth of Ravager mandibles. These were precision instruments. Scalpel-edges designed for a single explosive extension-and-catch that would bisect anything organic in the strike zone. The fastest kill mechanism in the ecosystem, built for ambush, and they were folded.

Folded. In observation posture.

The sensory pits tracked her. Not the diffuse, swarm-pattern scanning of worker columns or even the coordinated pack-reading of Ravagers. These pits moved independently. Tracking her face, her hands, her crossbow, each element receiving individual attention as the creature processed what it was seeing with a focus that was unsettlingly specific.

Individual focus. That wasn’t colony behavior. Colony organisms didn’t isolate targets for individual assessment. They read the swarm data and responded to aggregate chemical signals. This creature was looking at HER. Specifically. Personally. The way a person looks at something interesting.

Jayde stood still. The crossbow stayed on her back.

Sixty years of military command had taught her to read combat situations in fractions of seconds: is this threat active, latent, or absent? The answer was latent. If this creature wanted her dead, she’d be dead. Those blade-arms could extend faster than her hands could reach the crossbow. It had been sitting on this boundary for eleven days without attacking the base, without triggering the sensors, without alerting Zhi. It had been WATCHING. That was not Charling behavior. That was not instinct or pheromone-driven response or colony programming.

That was choice.

She stood still. Fifteen meters of corrupted air between them. The boundary line running through the space like a scar. The mantis on one side, still as carved stone. Jayde on the other, still as the woman she’d been trained to be when everything inside her said RUN.

The air smelled different here. At the boundary, the dead spot’s neutral atmosphere mixed with the corruption-saturated air of the active zone, creating a chemical gradient she could taste: clean giving way to copper giving way to ozone. The mantis sat at the exact midpoint. Enough corruption to sustain its biology, enough dead-spot suppression to free its mind. A narrow band. An unlikely equilibrium. The creature had found it and chosen to occupy it.

She studied the chitin while she had the chance. The translucent patches weren’t damage. They were adaptation. The dead spot had thinned the creature’s armor the way drought thins bark, removing the excess, leaving only what was structurally essential. The result was lighter, more flexible, and gave the mantis something the heavy-plated Ravagers lacked: speed. Those blade-arms, when they extended, would move faster than anything she’d faced. The chitin of an ambush predator, not a siege engine.

The rear legs confirmed it. Spring-loaded. Compressed. The musculature visible through the translucent patches was coiled, dense, built for a single explosive leap that would cover the distance between them faster than her hands could reach the crossbow. If this creature chose to close the gap, no exoskeleton and no compound crossbow would save her. The math was simple, and the math was lethal.

It didn’t choose. That was the point.

Minutes passed. Five. Ten. Neither moved.

The mantis’s sensory pits continued their individual tracking. Reading her energy signature — the divine energy that leaked through her sealed Crucible Core, the signature that had been drawing every Charling in the Mid Ring since day one. The richest energy source in the Hollows. A feast. A beacon.

The creature’s response to that beacon was wrong. Every Charling she’d encountered had surged toward the signature: workers deviating from patrol routes, Ravagers closing in coordinated packs. This creature oriented toward it and STOPPED. Read it. Processed it. And chose to stay exactly where it was.

Assessing.

Then the mantis moved.

Jayde’s hand twitched toward the crossbow. Stopped. The movement wasn’t a strike. One foreleg adjusted, shifting its angle against the thorax. The body settled lower on the rear legs. The posture changed from observation to something else — something that the Commander’s training recognized from a hundred briefings on animal behavior across two lifetimes.

Resting posture. The creature was settling in. Making itself comfortable. It had assessed. It had decided. The decision was: stay.

Jayde exhaled. Slowly. Controlled. The way you exhale when a predator has decided you’re interesting rather than edible and you want to keep it that way.

She backed away. One step. Two. Three. The mantis tracked her retreat with those individual sensory pits, each one following her independently, the attention neither increasing nor decreasing. She turned. Walked back toward the base. Didn’t run. Running would change the equation. Walking said: I’m not prey, I’m not threat, I’m leaving.

She felt the pits on her back for the full forty-minute walk home. The sensation didn’t change. Didn’t intensify. The creature wasn’t following — not yet. It was watching her leave the way a sentinel watches a visitor depart, cataloguing the direction, the speed, the pattern. Learning her. Building a model.

Halfway back, she stopped. Turned. Looked behind her.

The mantis was gone from the boundary line.

She scanned. Found it. It had moved. Not toward her. Lateral. Along the boundary, repositioning to maintain visual contact from a different angle. Still on the line. Still in the equilibrium zone. But tracking her from a new position, compensating for her movement, adjusting its observation post the way a professional surveillance team rotates positions to maintain coverage without being detected.

It was working.

Jayde turned back and walked the rest of the way to the Resolute with the absolute certainty that the creature behind her was more intelligent than anything she’d fought in the Harrowing, and that intelligence, in a predator built for ambush killing, was either the best or the worst thing that could happen to them.

***

”It’s been there for eleven days,” Jayde said.

Eden sat across from her in the command post, Marc’s nameplate on the door behind her, the datapad between them. Zhi was on Eden’s shoulder, scales cycling through confused blues and greens — the serpent had felt something at the boundary but couldn’t classify it.

[Different,] Zhi said through the bond. [Different from the clicking things. Same body. Different... inside.]

”Individual cognition,” Jayde said. ”It’s been in the dead spot’s boundary field long enough to develop something the colony organisms don’t have. The zero-energy field must suppress the pheromone dependency — cut the colony’s chemical network. Without the swarm signal telling it what to do, it started making its own decisions.”

”How long would that take?”

”I don’t know. Months. Years. The data from Isha’s dump doesn’t cover this.” She paused. ”It overrode the feed impulse, Eden. It sat fifteen meters from the richest energy source in the Hollows and chose not to attack. That’s not a Charling. That’s a mind.”

Eden was quiet for a moment. The doctor’s eyes — the ones that had dissected thirty Charling specimens and mapped every nerve junction and ganglion cluster in the worker caste — were processing. Her fingers moved on the datapad, pulling up the Charling anatomy reference she’d built across months of study.

”The thoracic ganglion,” Eden said. ”In the workers, it’s small. Relay hub. Processes pheromone input, outputs motor commands. Basic input-output loop. But the neural architecture around it is dense. Much denser than it needs to be for simple relay work. I noticed it during the first dissection but couldn’t explain why.”

”And now?”

”If the dead spot suppressed the pheromone input long enough, the ganglion might have compensated. Recruited the unused neural architecture around it. Started processing sensory data directly instead of waiting for chemical instructions.”

”You’re saying it grew a brain.”

”I’m saying the hardware was always there. The colony never needed to turn it on.” Eden looked at the perimeter map. ”But the dead spot did.”

The implications sat between them in the Resolute’s command post, heavy and strange. A Charling that could think. A colony organism that had become an individual. The first of its kind, or the latest in a line of boundary-dwellers that had been developing cognition at the edge of the dead spot for longer than either of them could guess.

Jayde looked at the datapad. The mantis’s position was marked on her perimeter map — a single point on the boundary line, equidistant from the Resolute and the shuttle. Perfectly placed. An observer’s position.

”It’ll follow,” Jayde said. ”It’s already decided to stay. When we move, it’ll move. It’s not hunting us. It’s orbiting.”

”Orbiting what?”

”The energy. Me. The divine signature it’s not designed to ignore and has decided to ignore anyway.” She looked at Eden. ”That’s either the most dangerous thing in the Hollows or the most valuable. I don’t know which yet.”

[I don’t like it,] Zhi said. The serpent’s scales had settled to a wary green-blue. [It clicks like the others. But its clicking is... quiet. Like it’s thinking about clicking instead of just doing it.]

”That’s exactly what it’s doing,” Jayde said. ”Thinking about clicking instead of just doing it.”

[What if it stops thinking and starts clicking for real?]

”Then we have a problem. But it’s had eleven days to make that choice and hasn’t made it.”

[Eleven days isn’t very long,] Zhi said, with the ancient wisdom of a creature that measured time in lifetimes. [I waited longer than that before I decided Eden was safe.]

The observation landed with more weight than the child’s voice carrying it might have suggested. Zhi was right. Trust took time. The mantis was in the early stages of whatever process it was running — assessment, calibration, the slow construction of a model that would eventually produce a decision about what to do with the energy source it had chosen to orbit.

Jayde saved the perimeter map. Closed the datapad. Looked at the eastern wall of the command post, beyond which the dead spot’s boundary lay, and beyond that, on the line between silence and noise, a mantis the size of a horse sat in resting posture and watched with sensory pits that had learned to see.

She would go back tomorrow. And the day after. And the day after that. If the creature wanted to study her, she would study it back. Two predators building models of each other across a boundary that separated two kinds of intelligence.

Day one hundred and thirty-eight. Two hundred and twenty-seven remaining.

The Hollows had produced something that shouldn’t exist: a Charling that thought for itself. Jayde didn’t know what that meant yet. She knew that it was watching. She knew that it had chosen not to kill.

And she knew, with the specific certainty of a woman who had spent two lifetimes studying the difference between threats and opportunities, that the choice not to kill was the most interesting thing the Harrowing had shown her.
