Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 459: Chapter 454: The Charlings

Location:Mid Ring, Vel’thari Containment — Dead Spot, Shuttle Cockpit

Date/Time:Late Ashwhisper, 9941 AZI — Day 83, 282 days remaining

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

Eden’s fingers moved across the screen with the unconscious familiarity of a woman who’d used these devices for sixty years. ”The data you’ve been getting from the dump. The Charling caste structure. Let’s build a proper reference. I’ll record, you talk. Start with the structure.”

Jayde took the datapad. Opened the sketch function, basic but the stylus worked. She drew three concentric circles. Labelled them: Outer. Mid. Deep.

”Three rings,” she said, handing the pad back. ”The containment is structured in concentric zones. Each ring has its own castes. The deeper you go, the larger and more dangerous.”

”How many total?”

”At least a dozen. Probably more.” Jayde took the pad back and started sketching in the outer ring. Rough shapes. Body plans. ”The Outer Ring is what the Academy students face. Seven castes.” She drew the first shape — an elongated body with raptorial forelegs. ”Scythlings. Think praying mantis. Ambush predators. They hold perfectly still on walls and ceilings until something warm walks past, then strike. Cat-sized to medium dog.”

”Weak points?”

”Thin chitin at the thorax junction, same as the workers. But they’re fast. The data says they’re lethal in clusters. Three or four Scythlings in the same tunnel section creates an overlapping kill zone.”

Eden took the pad. Made a note beside Jayde’s sketch: thorax junction. Speed = primary threat. Cluster behavior.

Jayde drew the next shape. Broad, low, heavily armored. ”Ironbacks. Imagine a rhinoceros beetle, but the size of a small horse. Heavy laborers, tunnel shapers. Slow, massively armored, extraordinarily strong. When the colony feels threatened, these form living walls across tunnel entrances. Horn-first. Stacked side by side.”

”Living barricades?”

”Living barricades that charge if you approach a brood chamber. Straight line. No subtlety. Bladed weapons bounce off the dorsal surface.” Jayde tapped the sketch. ”The legs, though. Stocky, but the joints are the same principle as the Sappers. Hit the joints, lose the mobility.”

”The Sappers we’ve been fighting. Where do they fit?”

”Everywhere.” Jayde drew a line through all three rings. ”Sappers are the logistics caste. They operate in every ring. The worker columns we’ve been ambushing are the colony’s supply chain: haulers, tunnel maintenance, resource transport. They’re the background traffic that keeps the whole system running. What we HAVEN’T met are the combat castes.”

Eden noted: Sappers = logistics, all rings. Combat castes = separate hierarchy.

Eden noted: dorsal armor impenetrable. Joints = vulnerability. Charge behavior near brood.

Third sketch. Wings. Eden’s eyebrows rose.

”Lancers,” Jayde said. ”Wasps. And they fly. In tunnels.”

”They fly in tunnels?”

”House-cat to medium-dog sized. Two pairs of translucent wings, reinforced with chitin veining. Fast, aggressive, they come in groups. The wing-beat produces a high-pitched drone. The data says students learn to dread that sound.” She drew the stinger. ”Ovipositor-derived venom spike. Not eggs. Repurposed into a paralytic delivery system. Corruption-laced. Slows essence circulation.”

Eden took the pad and studied the sketch. Her doctor’s eyes traced the anatomy. ”Paralytic delivery. If I could get a sample of the venom compound, I might be able to synthesize a counter-agent. What’s the dosage threshold?”

”The data doesn’t say. It notes that the venom is corruption-laced, so standard antidotes wouldn’t work.”

”Noted. Keep going.”

Fourth sketch — eight-limbed, web structures. ”Webweavers. Spider hybrids. Technically arachnid-evolved, but they share the colony’s pheromone system. Trapdoor variants dig concealment pits in tunnel floors, cover them with a chitin-and-silk lid. Step on the wrong stone and you drop into a silk-lined funnel with mandibles at the bottom.”

Fifth and sixth sketches. Shriekers, cicada types whose sonic emissions disorient and attract every other caste in range.

”There’s a sixth,” Jayde said. ”Drainers. Essence parasites. They latch and feed. Not fast, not armored, but if one gets on you and you don’t notice, it drains your cultivation reserves.”

Eden set the pad down. ”Six combat castes in the Outer Ring, plus the Sappers running logistics through every ring. That’s what the students face during the Harrowing?”

”That’s what the students face. And it’s the easy part.”

On Eden’s arm, Zhi had gone rigid. Not at a specific description. At all of them. The serpent’s scales were cycling again, the managed terror returning as the conversation filled the shuttle’s cockpit with the shapes and sounds and behaviors of the things that had eaten it four times. Eden’s free hand found Zhi’s back. The cycling slowed.

[Clicking things,] Zhi said through the bond, quiet and small. [All of them click.]

”I know,” Eden murmured. Then, to Jayde: ”The Mid Ring. Where we are.”

Jayde took the pad back. Drew in the middle ring. The shapes were bigger. ”Four castes. This is where it stops being pest control.”

She sketched the first: fast, articulated, built for speed. ”Ravagers. Picture army ants, but each one is the size of a horse. Assault infantry. They run. They coordinate: flanking, pincer movements, feint-and-ambush. Pack hunters, always in groups of six to twelve.”

”Coordinated tactics? That’s not swarm behavior.”

”The data calls it emergent tactical behavior from pheromone signals. Not individually intelligent, but the group operates like a military unit.” Jayde drew the abdominal glands. ”And they carry acid. Corruption-laced. Short range, two to three meters. Dissolves chitin, stone, and essence barriers. They use it to herd prey into kill zones. Block retreat with acid, then close from multiple directions.”

Eden stared at the sketch. ”We’ve been in the Mid Ring for three months, and we haven’t encountered any of these?”

”We’ve been in the dead spot and the fortress. Both are locations the colony avoids. The data says Ravagers are the response force — they arrive when something threatens Mid Ring infrastructure. We haven’t threatened it. We’ve been killing janitors on the edges.”

”What else?”

Second Mid Ring sketch. Massive, heavy, with a distinctive rear-abdomen structure. ”Siegebreakers. Think bombardier beetles. Horse-sized or bigger. They exist to destroy defensive positions. Those mandibles can grip and crack formation-reinforced stone. And the bombardier glands—” she drew the twin chambers ”—mix volatile corruption-reactive chemicals. The result is a superheated spray. Basically boiling chemical artillery.”

”Is there a recharge period?”

”Thirty to sixty seconds after firing. That’s the window. They’re always escorted by Ravagers, four to eight per Siegebreaker.”

Eden took the pad. Drew a tactical note in the margin: recharge window 30-60s. Escort = 4-8 Ravagers. Target abdominal chambers.

Third. A massive buried form. ”Lurkers. Antlion traps scaled to tunnel size. They reshape entire corridors into kill zones. Silk-lined pits. Anything that falls in slides down to the mandibles at the bottom. They won’t leave their pit, so they can be bypassed if you detect them.”

”How do you detect them?”

”Unnatural floor smoothness. Slightly concave surfaces. Absence of other castes. Even the Charlings avoid Lurker territory.”

Fourth. Clustered forms with disproportionately large sonic organs. ”Chorus. Evolved from the Outer Ring Shriekers. Sonic warfare specialists. They coordinate every other Mid Ring caste through frequency modulation. Low frequencies disorient. Mid frequencies disrupt essence circulation. High frequencies crack formation barriers.”

”Kill the Chorus, the others lose coordination?”

”For five to ten minutes. Then pheromone backup kicks in. But those minutes matter.”

Eden finished her notes. Set the pad on the console between them. The screen showed Jayde’s sketches, rough, functional, labelled with Eden’s precise medical annotations. A field guide to things that could kill them, built in real time, saved on a device from a dead civilization.

”And the Deep Ring?”

”Brood-Mothers,” Jayde said. ”Termite queens. Elephant-sized. Egg production. The data gets thin after that. Whatever else lives that deep, the original observers didn’t survive long enough to catalogue.”

Silence. The shuttle’s amber emergency lighting hummed. The scrubbers cycled. Outside the hull, the dead spot held its quiet.

”So the worker columns we’ve been ambushing with crossbows,” Eden said.

”Are the background logistics traffic. Below the Outer Ring combat castes. Below the Mid Ring assault castes. Below everything.”

”We’ve been killing janitors.”

”And we’ve been doing it well.” Jayde picked up the datapad. Saved the file. ”But the building they clean has guards we haven’t met yet.”

Eden was quiet for a long time. The datapad sat between them, its screen filled with Jayde’s rough sketches and her own precise annotations. The shuttle’s amber light hummed. Zhi’s scales had settled back to blue after the tension of the descriptions, the serpent’s head resting against Eden’s wrist.

”In any ecosystem,” Eden said slowly, ”even the apex predator has constraints. Prey, territory, competition.” She looked at Jayde. ”So what eats Charlings? And what do they eat? Because a colony of millions doesn’t sustain itself on nothing.”

Jayde had been waiting for this question. The answer was in the deepest layer of Isha’s data dump, the oldest section, the one that had taken the longest to parse because the language it was written in wasn’t Doha common. Wasn’t Soleri. Wasn’t anything Jayde had encountered in either life. Something older. Fragmentary. She’d managed to cross-reference enough to build a picture, but the picture was incomplete and what she could see was enough to change how she understood everything about this place.

”The data has layers,” Jayde said. ”The caste taxonomy, the pheromone system, the fortress network, that’s all relatively recent. Thousands of years old, written by observers who studied the colony from the inside.” She paused. ”But underneath that, there’s an older layer. Much older. Written in something I can’t fully translate. Not Soleri. Something before Soleri. Maybe the first language. I’ve been able to reference enough to piece together fragments.”

”What fragments?”

”During the War of the Gods, not a metaphor, an actual war between divine beings, the fighting tore holes in reality. Not metaphorical tears. Literal wounds between this reality and something else.” Jayde’s voice was careful. The tactical register she used for operational briefings, because what she was describing required precision, not drama. ”Something came through one of those tears. The data calls it the Nytharak.”

Eden’s fingers stopped moving on the datapad.

”Not a creature as we understand creatures,” Jayde continued. ”The data is clear on this: it’s not intelligent. Not evil. Not something you can negotiate with or reason with. It’s a force of nature from a reality that operates on fundamentally different rules than ours. Imagine a tornado. You can’t argue with a tornado. You can’t convince it to stop. You can only endure it or contain it.”

”They contained it.”

”A coalition of gods, Luminari and Soleri, brought it down. The battle cost most of them. And even then, they couldn’t destroy it. Its body doesn’t follow the rules of this reality. Shatter it and the pieces reform. Burn it and it reconstitutes. Unmake it at the essence level, and the essence reassembles.” Jayde let that sit. ”The best they could manage was to render it dormant and seal it underground. They chose a barren stretch of land. Built the strongest sealing formations ever created. And believed the problem was solved.”

”The sealed dimension,” Eden said. ”This place. We’re inside a prison.”

”We’re inside a prison built by gods to contain something from another reality. But the land they chose wasn’t completely barren.” Jayde looked at Zhi, whose dark eyes were fixed on her with the ancient attention that surfaced when old knowledge was being spoken. ”Small insects lived here. Native. Harmless. And over time — a very long time — those insects evolved. The Nytharak’s body passively bleeds energy from its home reality. What we’ve been calling corruption isn’t corruption in the sense of something being spoiled. It’s energy from a different reality, fundamentally incompatible with everything on Doha. And the insects found a way to consume it.”

”The Charlings.”

”The Charlings eat the Nytharak. They consume its corruption energy the way organisms consume food. The colony — all of it, every caste, every ring — exists because the Nytharak’s energy sustains it. And by consuming that energy, the Charlings are slowly killing the Nytharak. Eating it alive. The gods who built this prison eventually realized that the insects they’d overlooked were doing what they couldn’t: destroying the thing they’d sealed away. It just takes geological time.”

Eden picked up the datapad. Her fingers moved slowly across the screen, recording. ”So the Charlings are performing a service.”

”The most important service on Doha. They’re the only thing killing a creature that gods couldn’t destroy. But—” Jayde held up a hand. ”If the Charlings breach the seal, they breed without limit. They consume all available energy. They destroy the continent. Possibly reality itself. The ecosystem only works because it’s contained.”

”The paradox.”

”The paradox. Destroy the Charlings, the Nytharak may eventually wake. Let the Charlings grow unchecked, they escape containment and devour everything. So every fifty years—”

”The Harrowing.”

”The Harrowing. A culling. Send in the weakest cultivators to thin the population. Keep the Charling numbers in check without destroying the deep-level organisms that are actually consuming the Nytharak. The Outer Ring castes get culled. The Abyss tier — the ones doing the real work — are never touched.” Jayde’s voice was flat. ”The Academy doesn’t exist to train students, Eden. It exists to produce a regular supply of cultivators who are expendable enough to send into a prison to fight insects so that the insects don’t escape but also don’t stop eating the thing they’re containing.”

The shuttle was very quiet.

Eden’s blue eyes were fixed on the datapad. Her fingers had stopped. ”And the divine blood?”

Jayde had been waiting for this question too.

”The corruption energy — the Nytharak’s energy — is like food for the Charlings. Regular essence is a decent meal. Cultivation energy is better.” She paused. ”Divine energy is a feast. What I carry — phoenix blood, dragon blood, whatever ancient power lives in me — would be the richest energy source in this entire sealed dimension. If the Brood-Mothers sensed it, they could use it to breed enough warrior-class Charlings to break the seal. Or worse, to accelerate consumption of the Nytharak to the point where the thing wakes up prematurely, before it’s diminished enough to be subdued.”

”That’s why no one with divine blood is allowed inside.”

”That’s why no one with divine blood is allowed inside. And that’s why my Crucible Core stays shut. Why the dead spot is the only place I can breathe. Why Zhi’s threshold readings aren’t just useful, they’re the difference between surviving this year and triggering a catastrophe that the gods themselves spent millennia preventing.”

On Eden’s arm, Zhi pressed tighter against her wrist. The serpent’s ancient soul understood, even if the child’s mind couldn’t fully process it: the woman across the cockpit was the most dangerous thing in the Hollows, and not because of what she could do. Because of what she could feed.

Eden saved the file. Set the datapad down. Looked at Jayde.

”How long until the Nytharak is consumed?”

”The fragments I could translate suggest millions of years. Possibly longer.”

”And when it’s gone? The Charlings?”

”Nothing in the data addresses that. The gods who wrote this were focused on containment, not aftermath.”

”So we’re inside a prison that’s also a stomach that’s also a training ground that’s also an ecosystem. And we’ve been here for eighty-three days.”

”And two hundred and eighty-two to go.”

***

They stripped what they could without shutting down the reactor. The shuttle stayed lit: ultra-low, cool-dim, Zhi-confirmed safe. Everything removable went into the ring: medical equipment, maintenance supplies, the fabrication unit, the microprocessor container, the sealed QFC case, spare parts, cockpit instruments, atmosphere scrubbers. The sensor probes with their independent power cells — stored for post-Harrowing deployment.

What was left was a lit shell. The reactor humming. The emergency lights burning. A powered base in the dead spot that Zhi said was safe, and Jayde trusted the serpent’s judgment on energy thresholds more than she trusted her own.

She sat in the cockpit one last time. The pilot’s seat was still bolted in — she’d left it. The yoke was where it had been for centuries. The viewport showed the dead spot’s darkness, and the darkness was quiet, and the quiet was the only luxury the Harrowing had ever offered.

Two hundred and eighty-two days remaining.

The ring on her finger held: five sealed QFCs. Twenty-four microprocessors. A fabrication unit. A pharmaceutical synthesis unit. A surgical suite. Six deep-space probes. Marc’s weapons collection. The projectile insight. The compound crossbow components she’d start printing tomorrow.

The war hadn’t changed yet. She was still two women in an insect ecosystem with crossbows and nerve-fiber string. But the ring held the future, and the fabricator held the present, and tomorrow she’d start building compound crossbows from Federation alloys that the Charlings had never encountered.

Two hundred and eighty-two days. And a fabricator.

She stood. Walked out of the cockpit. Eden fell into step beside her, datapad in hand, Zhi on her shoulder with wings open and scales steady blue.

”When we get out,” Jayde said, ”everything changes.”

”I know,” Eden said. She held up the datapad. The screen glowed dim and warm and safe. ”But until then, we’ve got two hundred and eighty-two days of work to do. And I’ve got a fabricator to learn.”

The shuttle hummed. The dead spot held its silence. And the ring on Jayde’s finger held everything else.
