Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 475: Chapter 470: The Dwarf Response

Location:Zhū’kethara — Audience Chamber / Mixed-blood District / Brannick’s Workshop

Date/Time:Ashbloom, 9942 AZI — Month 6

Realm:Demon Realm

The dwarf didn’t bow.

He walked into the audience chamber the way Ren suspected he walked into everything: low to the ground, steady as bedrock, looking at the stone walls with the practiced assessment of a craftsman who could tell you what a mountain was made of by listening to his own footsteps echo off it.

Four feet tall. Granite-colored skin. A beard of iron-grey streaked with white, falling to his belt in seven braids — each braid a millennium of service. His eyes were the deep amber of molten bronze, and they swept the chamber with the kind of honesty that most diplomats spent careers learning to suppress.

”High Thane Thorgrund Ironheart,” the herald announced. ”Keeper of the Maker Forges. Speaking for the Irondeep Holds.”

”Just me,” Thorgrund said. ”No delegation. No advisors. I don’t need people to tell me what I’m looking at.” He walked to the center of the chamber, looked up at Ren, and folded his arms. The forge-scarred hands were enormous — thick, precise, shaped by eight thousand years of work. ”I received your correspondence. It was well-written. Very diplomatic. Many words. I appreciate the effort.”

”But?”

”We don’t do small talk, Your Majesty. My people are builders. We see a problem, we fix it. You wrote to me because you have a problem. Show me the problem, and I’ll tell you whether we can help.”

Ren had planned a graduated disclosure. Start with the shared threat. Build toward the alliance. Layer the evidence the way he’d layered it for Thessaly — enough to intrigue, enough to commit, never too much at once. The Thane had demolished the plan in thirty seconds.

He found, unexpectedly, that he preferred it this way.

”All right,” Ren said. ”No small talk. I’ll show you everything.”

***

He started with the breeding program.

Not the dimensional evidence. Not the SoulBloom synthesis. The people. What had been done to them. The evidence crystals that held the testimony of mixed-bloods who’d been bred in captivity, their bloodlines harvested, their children taken. The Temple’s operation laid bare in the words of the people it had consumed.

Thorgrund listened.

The molten-bronze eyes didn’t waver. The forge-scarred hands didn’t move from where they were folded across his chest. He stood four feet tall in the center of a demon king’s audience chamber, and he listened to testimony recordings that described children being bred like livestock, and the only thing that changed was his breathing.

It got slower. Deeper. The breathing of someone pulling air into a furnace.

”Which bloodlines,” Thorgrund said. His voice was very quiet. The deep resonance that could carry across forge halls was compressed to something that barely reached the walls.

”All of them. Demon. Elf. Human. Aetherwing.” Ren paused. ”Dwarf.”

The word landed like a hammer on an anvil.

Thorgrund’s arms unfolded. His hands dropped to his sides. The enormous, scarred fingers opened and closed once, the reflexive grip of a craftsman reaching for a tool that wasn’t there.

”Dwarven blood,” he said. ”Our kin. In those... facilities.”

”Mixed-blood children with dwarven heritage. Bred. Harvested. Contained in sealed dimensions. Some for generations.”

Thorgrund’s eyes closed. The molten-bronze disappeared behind lids that pressed shut with the specific force of someone holding something inside that wanted very badly to come out. His shoulders, broad and dense and built like a foundation wall, trembled once.

When his eyes opened, they were wet.

”How many?”

”We don’t have an exact count. Among the mixed-bloods we’ve rescued, several thousand carry dwarven bloodline markers. Strong markers. Visible.”

”You rescued them.”

”We rescued them from the Mid Realm. Persecution zones. Villages where mixed-blood families were being targeted, attacked, driven out. The rescues have been ongoing for years — our population is over one and a half million now, and growing. They live here. In Zhū’kethara. In the settlements around the mountain.”

Thorgrund looked at Ren. The wet bronze eyes held an expression that was not diplomatic or political or strategic. It was the expression of a clan elder who had just learned that children of his blood had been suffering while his people hid in their mountains.

”Show me,” he said.

***

They walked the mixed-blood district.

Ren had considered preparing the route, staging the visit, controlling what Thorgrund saw. He’d dismissed the idea. The Thane had asked for no small talk. He’d get none.

The mixed-blood district of Zhū’kethara occupied the mountain’s southern galleries — wide corridors converted into living spaces, workshops, communal kitchens, schools. The population was dense and varied: demon-blooded, elf-blooded, human, Aetherwing, and among them, scattered like stones in a riverbed, the ones with dwarven heritage. Shorter than the others. Broader. Hands that were too large for their frames. Skin with the faint granite undertone that dwarven blood left even at its most dilute.

Thorgrund saw them immediately. The Thane’s eyes, built for reading metal and stone, read bloodlines just as clearly. He stopped at the first junction of the district and looked at a group of children running between the gallery pillars, and his breath caught.

Three of the children had dwarven features. Thick fingers. Broad faces. One — a girl of perhaps eight — had the granite-colored skin and the stubborn set of jaw that could have come from Thorgrund’s own clan. She was chasing a demon-blooded boy through the pillars, both of them laughing, both of them moving with the unselfconscious freedom of children who had never been told they were wrong.

The demon boy tripped. The dwarven girl caught his arm before he hit the stone. Pulled him up. Said something that made him laugh harder. They ran on.

Thorgrund stood in the corridor and watched them go. His shoulders were shaking.

”She looks like my granddaughter,” he said. His voice had broken. The deep resonance was gone, replaced by something raw and unguarded. ”My son’s daughter. The same jaw. The same hands.” He turned to Ren. The wet bronze eyes held no diplomatic calculation, no political strategy, nothing but the naked grief of a clan elder seeing his bloodline in a child who didn’t know she carried it. ”How long have they been here?”

”Some for years. Others for months. The rescues have been ongoing.”

”And they’re...” He gestured at the corridor. At the children running together. At the demon families and the elf-blooded craftsmen and the human teachers and the dwarven-heritage children moving through the space as equals. ”They’re together. All of them. Nobody is... separated? Ranked?”

”They’re citizens. The same as everyone else.”

Thorgrund was quiet for a long time. He walked the district slowly, his forge-scarred hands clasped behind his back, his molten-bronze eyes reading every face. He stopped at a workshop where a dwarven-heritage teenager was learning metalwork from a demon smith. He stopped at a school where a human teacher was showing dwarven-heritage children how to read. He stopped at a kitchen where a woman with granite skin and demon eyes was ladling soup into bowls for a line of children whose bloodlines spanned every race on Doha.

Nobody stared at him. Nobody bowed or flinched or looked away. The mixed-blood district had seen enough unusual visitors that a four-foot dwarf with seven braids didn’t register as remarkable.

That, more than anything, was what broke him.

”Most races want our goods,” Thorgrund said. His voice was steady again, but the steadiness was the kind that sits on top of something deep. ”Our metalwork, our formations, our engineering. They want what we build. But they don’t want US. Too short. Too blunt. Too ugly. Too emotional.” He looked at the kitchen where the granite-skinned woman was feeding children. ”Your people don’t look at my kin that way.”

”My people know what it’s like to be looked down on,” Ren said. ”We don’t do it to others.”

Thorgrund nodded. Once. The nod of a man making a decision that his heart had made before his head caught up.

***

They returned to the audience chamber. Thorgrund sat — the first time the Thane had sat since arriving. He took the chair across from Ren as if he belonged in it. No ceremony. No deference. The posture of a man who had decided they were equals and was done pretending otherwise.

”Full alliance,” Thorgrund said. ”Not observation. Not assessment. Not cautious engagement. Full. The Irondeep Holds will stand with the demon realm against the Temple and against anyone else who breeds our kin like cattle.”

Ren had expected negotiation. Terms. The careful exchange of commitments that every alliance required. What he got was a dwarf with wet eyes and a voice like a forge bell declaring unconditional solidarity.

”There has to be give and take,” Ren said. Not because he wanted to slow the Thane down, but because alliances built on emotion alone didn’t last. ”What do you need from us?”

”Two things.” Thorgrund held up one thick finger. ”First: my people need to meet their kin. The mixed-bloods with dwarven heritage. I want to send teachers, crafters, clan mentors. People who can show those children what their blood means. Where it comes from. What they can become.”

”Done.”

Second finger. ”I need to see what your people are building. The correspondence mentioned innovations. Engineering. New approaches to old problems. The Holds have been isolated since the Sundering. We have knowledge, but knowledge without application becomes... stale. Show me what you’ve built, and I’ll show you how to build it better.”

Ren smiled. Not the diplomat’s smile. The real one.

He took Thorgrund to Brannick’s workshop.

***

Brannick wasn’t prepared for Thorgrund. Nobody could have been.

The Thane stopped in the workshop doorway. Not at the tools, not at the forge, not at the alloy samples racked along the walls. At Brannick. The molten-bronze eyes locked on the mixed-blood smith’s face and read it the way they read stone: by what it was made of. The dwarven brow. The thick forearms. The enormous hands, too large for the human jaw and the almost-elven cheekbones, shaped by a bloodline that Thorgrund recognized the way a father recognizes his own features in a stranger’s child.

”You have our blood,” Thorgrund said. Quiet. Not a question.

Brannick’s dark, steady eyes met the Thane’s. ”Among others. I’m told there’s enough mixed in me that the gods themselves couldn’t sort it out.”

”I can see the dwarven. Here.” Thorgrund touched his own brow. ”And here.” His own hands. ”It’s strong in you. Whoever you came from, the line was close.”

The moment held. A dwarf Thane and a mixed-blood smith, standing in a workshop doorway, recognizing kinship across a gap of blood and centuries and everything the world had put between them.

Then Thorgrund walked inside, and the craftsman took over from the clansman.

The Thane walked through the workshop the way a pilgrim walks through a temple. Every station received his attention. Every tool was lifted, weighed, assessed. The alloys. The metallurgical samples. The formation-inscribed components for the communication arrays. The gateway specifications that Brannick had designed for the mass evacuation.

Thorgrund was silent for a long time.

Then he picked up one of Brannick’s swords. Turned it over. Tested the balance. Ran his thumb along the edge. Checked the grain, the temper, the essence integration. And put it down.

The putting-down said everything.

”This is the best craftsmanship in this realm,” Thorgrund said. His voice was raw. ”And nobody taught you.”

Brannick’s dark, steady eyes met the Thane’s. ”I taught myself.”

”I know. That’s what makes this a tragedy.” Thorgrund’s thick hands rested on the sword. The hands of a master who had spent eight thousand years in a mountain full of knowledge and students and tradition, looking at the work of a man who had spent eight thousand years alone with nothing but raw talent and stubborn refusal to stop. ”You solved problems that took our greatest smiths millennia to crack. You did it ALONE. Without training. Without teachers. Without anyone to tell you whether you were brilliant or wasting your time.”

”Was I brilliant?”

”You were both.” Thorgrund picked up the gateway specifications. Studied them. His molten-bronze eyes moved across the diagrams with the specific reverence of a craftsman recognizing work that surpassed what he’d expected. ”The resonance cascade solution. I don’t recognize the technique.”

”I invented it. The standard approach wouldn’t hold at the scale I needed. So I built something new.”

”You built something new.” Thorgrund set the specifications down with the care of a man handling something precious. ”Show me what you’ve learned. Everything. From the beginning.”

Not a test. A trade. His two hundred thousand years of Forgemaster tradition for Brannick’s eight thousand years of self-taught innovation. The ancient and the modern, meeting across a gap of everything the world had taken from both of them.

Brannick showed him. And Thorgrund, the High Thane of the Irondeep Holds, the Keeper of the Maker Forges, sat at a mixed-blood smith’s workbench and listened the way students listen when the teacher has something worth hearing.

When it was done, Thorgrund stood. Looked at Brannick. Looked at Ren. His eyes were wet again.

”The Codex and the Luminari will return,” Thorgrund said. The words carried the weight of eight thousand years of unbroken faith. ”My people have never doubted it. We kept the forges. We kept the knowledge. We WAITED. And now I come to a demon king’s mountain and find a smith who builds like a Forgemaster, children with dwarven blood playing alongside demons and elves and humans, and an alliance that treats my kin as equals.” He straightened. All four feet of him. ”The Irondeep Holds are with you. Where do you need us?”

Ren looked at the dwarf. Four feet tall. Bronze eyes. Seven braids. Eight thousand years of faith and craft and the specific, fierce love of a people who measured the world not by power or politics but by what you built and how you treated the people who helped you build it.

The first full ally. Not the cautious observer, like the elves. Not the oath-compelled, like the Aetherwing. The dwarves came because their children were here, because the work was good, and because they had never stopped believing that the world could be better than it was.

”Everywhere,” Ren said. ”I need you everywhere.”
