Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 466: Chapter 461: The Front Line

Location:Mid Ring, Vel’thari Containment — Tunnel Network Beyond Dead Spot

Date/Time:Sparkfall, 9942 AZI — Day 134, 231 days remaining

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The first hunt with students was chaos.

Jayde positioned them the way she’d position a squad: pairs at assigned vectors, crossbows staged, kill zone marked. She’d chosen a worker column on a regular logistics route, twelve workers, predictable timing, the easiest engagement the Mid Ring could offer. A training run. A controlled exercise. No Ravagers in the sector. No combat castes on patrol. Workers only.

It fell apart in thirty seconds.

The first bolt hit clean — Meifen, from the left flank, through the lead worker’s relay hub at twelve paces. The creature staggered, legs losing coordination, body circling into the tunnel wall. A kill that would have been textbook if anyone had been watching it. Nobody was. Because the second student on the left flank had fired simultaneously, missed the relay hub by a hand’s width, and the bolt had ricocheted off the worker’s dorsal plate and struck the tunnel wall with a sharp crack that the column’s sensory pits registered immediately.

The column reacted. Not the panicked scatter of prey — the coordinated pivot of a logistics system detecting a threat in its path. Twelve workers turned in unison, the pale amber chitin catching the bioluminescent ceiling light as their bodies oriented toward the sound. Mandibles opened. The wet, mechanical cycling that Jayde had learned to hear in her sleep. The alarm pheromone hit the air — the chemical signal that said THREAT — and the acrid copper-rot smell filled the corridor.

The student nearest the lead worker froze. A Grade 4 boy, Torrent affinity, hands locked on his crossbow. The worker was three meters from him and closing, the mandibles opening wider than his head, the sawtooth serration glistening with the lubricating fluid that kept the cutting edges from binding. The creature’s sensory pits were locked on his body heat. It didn’t have eyes. It didn’t need them. It knew exactly where he was.

”Hub. Fire. NOW,” Jayde said. Calm. The Commander’s register.

He fired. The bolt hit the worker’s thorax — not the relay hub, the plate beside it. The broadhead punched through the amber chitin and amber fluid sprayed in a thin arc. The worker staggered but kept coming, the mandibles cycling faster now, the wounded body driving forward on legs that hadn’t received the stop signal because the relay hub was intact.

Eden’s bolt took it. From the rear position, the precision crossbow’s lighter projectile found the sensory-pit cluster and destroyed the relay hub behind it. The worker’s legs kept driving for two more steps on reflex, the body circling sideways, mandibles snapping at nothing. It hit the tunnel wall and slid down and twitched and was still.

”Hold positions,” Jayde said. ”Relay hubs. Nothing else.”

They fired. Seven crossbows, eleven remaining workers. The bolts hit chitin, stone, air, and — occasionally — target anatomy. Two more workers dropped with relay hub strikes. A third lost its rear legs to Eden’s ganglion targeting. The rest kept coming, their column formation dissolving into a spread that filled the tunnel width, mandibles open, sensory pits tracking the cluster of warm bodies in their path.

”Magazine two,” Jayde said. She’d given each student two six-bolt magazines. Twelve shots. More than enough for twelve workers if every shot hit the target. ”Relay hubs. Breathe.”

Meifen reloaded cleanly. Three seconds. Stock-brace, magazine-swap, lever-cock. She fired and hit. The dual-affinity mind was processing the combat environment the way it processed essence — reading angles, calculating trajectories, adjusting for the vibration of hands that were shaking because the student behind the crossbow had never killed anything with her own hands before.

The other students reloaded slower. One dropped a magazine. Another jammed the lever because her grip was too tight and the mechanism locked. Eden, positioned at the rear with her precision crossbow, put bolts into the workers that got past the firing line — three clean ganglion strikes that dropped the creatures within arm’s reach of the students.

Forty seconds. Twelve workers dead. No student injuries.

They stood in the tunnel with dead Charlings around their feet and the alarm pheromone fading and their hands shaking and their faces showing the specific expression that Jayde had seen on a thousand recruits across two lifetimes: the aftermath of first combat. The understanding that the things they’d been afraid of could die, and that they could be the ones who killed them, and that the killing was ugly and necessary and nothing like cultivation sparring.

”Debrief,” Jayde said. ”What went wrong?”

”I missed,” the second student on the left flank said. His voice was thin.

”You missed because you aimed at the plate instead of the pit. The pit is three centimeters left of where you were aiming. Recalibrate your target. What else?”

”The reload jammed.”

”Because you white-knuckled the lever. Loosen your grip. The mechanism does the work. You guide it. What else.”

”Someone dropped a magazine.”

”Fix the retention loop on the magazine pouch. It should hold until you pull it deliberately. What else.”

Silence. Seven students looking at her. Waiting for the judgment that came after failure. The academic punishment they’d been trained to expect.

”Twelve for twelve,” Jayde said. ”Zero injuries. The alarm pheromone deployed but our pheromone barriers on the approach routes will redirect the response. The engagement was messy, slow, and your grouping was terrible.” She paused. ”And you’re all alive, and they’re all dead, and that’s the only score that matters in this place.”

Something shifted in the group. The specific, quiet recalibration of people who’d expected punishment and received pragmatism. The Commander didn’t grade on style. The Commander graded on survival.

”Again tomorrow,” Jayde said. ”Same formation. Different route. Twelve more workers.”

***

They hunted in pairs after that.

Jayde rotated the assignments: experienced fighters with nervous ones, steady hands with shaking ones, Meifen floating between positions wherever the tactical situation needed her. The sparring partner had become something more than a participant. She was Jayde’s second. Not by appointment. By competence. The Grade 5 who’d adjusted faster than anyone else and who carried the combat training to the other students with the natural authority of someone who’d been leading before she’d been led.

The hunts got cleaner. Ten days. Twenty engagements. The students’ grouping tightened. The reload times shortened. The panic that had filled the first hunt’s air was replaced by something harder and more useful: focus.

Hunt five was the turning point. A twenty-worker column, the largest they’d engaged. Jayde set the kill zone in a corridor junction with three firing positions: left flank, right flank, center rear. Meifen commanded the left. Jayde took the right. Eden held the center with her precision crossbow and two students as backup.

Twenty workers. Fourteen seconds. Zero bolts wasted on plate — every shot targeted the relay hub or the ganglion junction. The students moved through their magazines with the mechanical rhythm that separated training from panic: aim, fire, lever-cock, aim, fire. The corridor filled with the sound of bolts hitting chitin and the wet percussion of workers collapsing and the clicking of mandibles cycling on reflex in bodies that had lost their steering.

One student threw up afterward. Not from fear. From the smell. Twenty dead workers in a confined space produced a volume of amber fluid and corruption-tainted biological waste that overwhelmed the senses. Jayde didn’t comment. Some things you got used to. Some things you shouldn’t.

The cultivators who’d entered the Harrowing as essence-wielders were becoming crossbow fighters, and the crossbow fighters were learning to kill without announcing their position to every Charling in the Mid Ring.

They lost three bolts on the fourth hunt to a ricochet problem — bolts hitting ridged chitin at shallow angles and deflecting into the tunnel wall. Jayde redesigned the broadhead geometry that evening, sharpening the angle of attack from thirty degrees to fifteen, and the ricochet problem disappeared.

Eden catalogued every engagement on the datapad. Kill counts. Bolt expenditure. Hit ratios. Time-to-kill. The data built a picture of a training program that was working: hit ratios climbed from forty percent on hunt one to seventy-three percent by hunt ten. Time-to-kill for a twelve-worker column dropped from forty seconds to under twenty. Magazine jams dropped to zero after hunt four.

”They’re learning,” Eden said, reviewing the data.

”They’re surviving,” Jayde corrected. ”Learning comes after.”

The teacher arrived on day one hundred and thirty-three.

Jayde was running a patrol sweep when Zhi’s scales flashed combat-silver. The serpent’s head snapped toward the northwest passage, the dark eyes focusing with the individual-tracking attention that meant something unusual.

[Person,] Zhi said. [One. Not clicking things. Person. Hurt.]

They found her in a side corridor, wedged into a crevice between collapsed stone, her instructor’s robe torn and filthy, a makeshift tourniquet around her left arm. The fabric was stiff with dried blood. The tourniquet had been retied multiple times — each wrap slightly higher than the last, tracking the infection’s progress up the limb. The air around her smelled of corruption-taint: the sweet, metallic decay that Charling venom left in living tissue.

Middle-aged. Academy staff — the robe’s cut and color marked her as an instructor, not a student. She’d been alone for a long time. The hollowness in her eyes said weeks. The wound on her arm said Charling mandible, a deep lateral slice from wrist to elbow that had gone septic. The tourniquets said she’d treated it herself, tightening and retightening as the infection climbed, buying time with pressure and willpower and the slow, grinding stubbornness of a woman who refused to die in a tunnel.

”Academy Instructor,” Jayde said. Not a question.

The woman’s eyes focused. She looked at Jayde’s armor, the crossbow, the exoskeleton frame. Processed what she was seeing. Failed to reconcile it with anything in her experience.

”Formation-crafting,” the woman managed. Her voice was hoarse. Unused. ”Instructor Li Shenwei. The swarm separated my group two months ago. I’ve been working south.” She paused. ”Who are you?”

”Ashford. Grade 2 Elite.”

Shenwei’s eyes widened. ”Grade 2?”

”I get that a lot.”

Eden was already cutting the tourniquet. The wound beneath was bad — mandible fragment embedded deep, the tissue inflamed and swelling with the corruption-tainted infection that Charling wounds produced. The doctor’s face was clinical. Her hands were fast.

”This needs the medical bay,” Eden said. ”Now.”

They carried her back. Shenwei was semiconscious by the time they reached the dead spot, the infection fever climbing, her coherent moments coming in fragments between delirium. Eden worked in the Resolute’s medical bay for four hours. Cleaned the wound. Extracted the mandible fragment. Applied the herbal compound and the cultivation-neutralized antiseptic she’d developed from ring supplies. Stabilized the fever.

”She’ll live,” Eden reported. ”But the arm needs time. The corruption infection has been working for weeks. It’s going to be a long recovery.”

When Shenwei woke properly, Jayde debriefed her.

The formation-crafting instructor confirmed what the students had described, but with the clarity of someone who’d been part of the operational structure before everything collapsed.

”The Outer Ring has six protection bases,” Shenwei said. Her voice was stronger now, the fever broken, her injured arm supported by Eden’s sling. ”Ringed around the seal perimeter. Students deploy from the main base to satellite bases during the day, hunt in assigned sectors, and return to the bases at night. That’s the system. It’s worked for thousands of years.”

”What changed?”

”The Charlings adapted.” Shenwei’s eyes were steady. Professional. The eyes of an instructor who had watched a system she trusted collapse around her. ”Teams started going missing. Not dying in combat — going MISSING. Departing their base for a daytime patrol and never returning. No bodies. No distress signals. No evidence of engagement. Just... gone.”

Jayde listened. Let the source finish.

”Three teams went missing from Base Four in the same week. I took four senior students and went looking.” Shenwei paused. The pause carried weight. ”We found the trail. It led deeper. We followed. The swarm closed behind us. Every route back to the Outer Ring sealed with worker columns and Shrieker patrols. We couldn’t push through without full-power cultivation, and full-power cultivation brought Ravagers.”

The picture assembled itself. Jayde had been mapping pheromone trails for months — colony logistics redirecting around specific corridors, opening paths in one direction while sealing them in others. She’d assumed it was resource management. Hearing Shenwei’s account, the pattern rearranged.

”They’re not just defending territory,” Jayde said slowly. ”They’re closing routes behind you and opening routes deeper. The teams follow the path of least resistance because that’s what panic does. By the time anyone realizes they’ve been redirected, they’re too deep to navigate back to the main base. And the main base portal is the only way out when the seal lifts.”

Shenwei stared at her. ”That’s exactly what happened. How do you—”

”Pheromone trail data. I’ve been mapping colony logistics for months. The patterns were there. I didn’t read them right until now.”

”How many of your group survived?”

”I don’t know. The formation broke when the first Ravager pack hit. The students panicked. I drew the lead Ravager toward the southern passage to give them a chance to scatter.” She looked at her hands. ”It worked. The pack followed me. By the time I lost them, I was alone. Two months ago.” She looked at her hands. ”The seal doesn’t break for another seven months. Nobody’s coming. Nobody CAN come — the dimension is sealed for the full year. The bases in the Outer Ring are losing teams faster than they can track, and the teams that go looking for the missing ones go missing themselves.”

”A cascade,” Jayde said.

”A slaughter happening so slowly that the people inside it don’t realize the scale until it’s too late.”

Jayde filed everything. The colony was systematically dismantling the Academy’s operational structure — redirecting teams away from bases, isolating groups, pushing them into the Mid Ring where the combat castes could finish them. The Harrowing had been a manageable culling for thousands of years. Something had changed. The colony was fighting smarter.

”How many do you think are still alive?” Jayde asked. She’d watched them enter at the portal. She knew how many had walked through. She didn’t need Shenwei to tell her the starting number. She needed to know the current one.

Shenwei was quiet for a long time. ”Fewer every day.”

***

By day one hundred and thirty-four, the group had grown to ten. Seven students. One instructor. Jayde. Eden. Plus Zhi, whose status as a sentient winged serpent Shenwei accepted with the glazed equanimity of a woman who’d spent two months alone in a Charling-infested tunnel system and had used up her capacity for surprise.

The front line had changed.

Ten people with crossbows changed the tactical equation. Jayde could set larger kill zones, cover more approach vectors, run hunts on worker columns three times the size of what she and Eden had been engaging. The pheromone barriers held the fortress and dead-spot perimeters clean. The students’ hit ratios were climbing. Shenwei, once her arm healed enough to hold a crossbow, brought something the students didn’t have: an instructor’s understanding of formation-crafting, which translated into an intuitive grasp of tactical geometry that made her a natural at positioning.

The Harrowing was still the Harrowing. The colony was still millions strong. The Mid Ring combat castes still patrolled in formations that could overwhelm a group of ten in seconds. They weren’t winning. They were surviving — differently, more effectively, with better tools and better tactics and a growing body of operational knowledge that Jayde catalogued on the datapad and Eden analyzed for patterns.

But something else was different too.

On the evening patrol, crossing back from the fortress to the dead spot, Jayde stopped. The feeling was back. The fishhook behind the sternum. Predator. Close. Stationary.

She scanned the dead spot boundary. The tripwires were undisturbed. The sensors reported silence.

But something was there. At the edge of perception. Watching.

She’d felt it for four days now. Since the students had moved to the dead spot. As if their arrival — the increase in warm bodies, in activity, in the quiet hum of ten people living where two had lived before — had attracted attention from something that was neither worker nor Ravager nor anything the Charling hierarchy had prepared her for.

Something singular. Something still.

She walked the rest of the way home in silence, and the feeling followed her.
